In the fifty years between the JFK assassination and a Kardashian selfie breaking the internet, two
women representing different cultures, races, times, and attitudes created two individual pieces of art
that became living commentary on the power dynamics at play in their world. In 1964, Yoko Ono
challenged both societal convention and the artist/audience relationship in her exhibit Cut Piece, and
decades later Kara Walker s Sugar Subtlety, 2014, challenged preconceived notions of racial
symbolism and societal convention on a historical level. For both creators, the idea of The Gaze is
explored and even featured, a term that addresses the controlling power a dominant group holds
through visualization and often through sexuality. However, the ways in which this term is explored
are different between the two women. While Ono s work highlights and even proves the Western male
domination involved in the idea of The Gaze , fifty years later and a difference in culture sees Kara

Introduction Cellular respiration is the series of metabolic process by which living cells produce
energy through the oxidation of organic substances. Cellular respiration takes place in the
mitochondria. Fermentation is the process by which complex organic compounds such as glucose, are
broken down by the action of enzymes into simpler compounds without the use of oxygen. The
significance of these pathways for organisms is to allow for an organism to be able to generate ATP.
Some organism that undergo cellular respiration are bacteria and fungi. Some organism that undergo
fermentation are yeast and muscle cells. In cellular respiration, glucose is oxidized and releases
energy. In cellular respiration, glucose produces ATP and 3 carbon molecules of pyruvate. The
pyruvate is then further broken down in the mitochondria where it becomes oxidized and releases CO2
(Upadhyaya 2014). In the fermentation process oxygen does not play a part. This process converts
glucose into pyruvate and produces ATP. From there pyruvate breaks down into CO2 and acetaldehyde

The whole point of the poem Daddy is Sylvia Plath showing her emotions of how drained she felt
from losing her father at a young age and how one death affected her whole life. The use of Nazi
symbolism can be confusing, but plays a huge part in understanding the full meaning of what Plath
was portraying. The use of intense imagery shows a story of Plath s deepest emotions. The story Plath
is describing is showing the reader her extreme depression and every big moment in her life that hurt
her more and more. One could describe the poem Daddy as a collection of Plath s most depressive
memories in her life.
Most or at least some may think this poem is about a girl who loses her father at a young age in a
concentration camp due to the poor living conditions. I was one of those people thinking that was the
case leading her to lose faith in God, much like how the Jews and others in concentration camps lost
their faith in God. It can be easy to come to this realization because of her use of Nazi symbolism in
the poem. That symbolism makes it hard for one to see that she is not literally in a concentration
camp, but feels as though she is figuratively in a concentration camp. When you figure this out you
can tell she uses the Nazi symbolism to describe how broken inside she felt as did the people in the
concentration camps felt. She feels so broken because she loses her father at just 8 years old. A very
reasonable and most likely action for a child that age is to tumble into a deep spiral of depression.
Plath herself falls victim to this deep confusion and more so depression. A death of a loved one at that
young of an age is already hard enough on an 8 year old, let alone it being her father. Her father being
someone she looked up to and loved so greatly, perhaps even more than anyone, making the death
even harder for her to bare. When you look deeper into her father s death with research you can tell he
died in boston and not a concentration camp. This fact proving their family was not in a concentration
camp and Plath was using the Nazi symbolism to describe her feelings on the untimely death and how
she felt wronged by the world. Her father s death is where you can start to see Plath not understanding
