Presented by Ben A. Lukuyu, Leonard Marwa, Gregory Sikumba and David Ngunga at the Africa RISING East and Southern Africa Review and Planning Meeting, Malawi, 14-16 July 2015
The poultry industry in Pakistan has grown significantly since the 1960s when the government began promoting its development. Key events included the launch of the country's first commercial hatchery in 1964 and policies in the 1960s-1970s that provided incentives like tax exemptions and subsidized feed. The industry has since developed further and now contributes substantially to meat and egg production, generating many jobs. However, major floods in 2010 devastated agricultural land and killed livestock, posing severe challenges to the poultry sector.

present status of pakistan feed industry and its problems-pptDr. Waqas Nawaz
Pakistan's livestock sector contributes significantly to the economy and rural incomes, but animal production is low due to feed deficiencies. The major feed resources in Pakistan are crop residues, grazing lands, cultivated fodders, and cereal/legume byproducts. There are over 200 feed mills, but few produce compound feed. The feed industry operates below capacity due to issues like poor storage leading to damaged crops. Challenges facing the industry include a lack of investment, modern technology, and support from the government.
Livestock in South Asia: Challenges, priorities and way forwardILRI
Presented by Nure Alam Siddiky at the Workshop on transforming livelihoods in South Asia through sustainable livestock research and development, Kathmandu, Nepal, 13-14 November 2018
- Poultry broiler farming provides an important source of protein, minerals, and vitamins for human diets. It can be a primary source of income for families or provide supplemental income through selling chicken meat.
- India has made tremendous progress in broiler production over the last three decades, becoming the fifth largest producer globally. However, per capita consumption of poultry meat remains well below recommended levels.
- There is a growing trend of contract integration in broiler farming where companies handle all aspects of production from grandparent stock to feed to veterinary services to marketing in exchange for farmers investing only in housing infrastructure. This provides benefits to farmers through lower investment and production costs and insulation from market price fluctuations.

This document discusses trends and opportunities in the livestock and fish sectors in Asia. It notes that demand for meat, milk, and fish is rapidly rising in Asia and will more than double by 2050. Smallholders currently dominate production but face issues like low productivity. Aquaculture is key to meeting rising fish demand but smallholders face constraints around access to resources and markets. The document argues that investment in agricultural research should reflect the growing importance of livestock and fish and proposes partnerships between national and international researchers to address challenges in animal health, genetics, feeding, and developing sustainable agri-food systems.

Scientific and Technical Partnerships in Africa: Technologies, Platforms, and Partnerships in support of the African agricultural science agenda, Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, April 4&5, 2017
This document discusses how harnessing data through internet-connected trackers could help improve cattle farming in Australia. Key points include:
- Growing demand for beef in Asia presents opportunities for Australian farmers but also challenges of limited land and resources.
- Cattle farmers currently have difficulty accessing real-time health information and best practices to raise cattle profitably.
- A proposed solution is an online platform that loans trackers to farmers to monitor cattle health, connects them to a forum, and provides analytics to help address issues like disease prevention.
- The platform could generate revenue from subscription fees and interest on tracker loans to help farmers monitor herds more efficiently at scale.
This document discusses agricultural innovation in Ontario, Canada. It provides examples of innovative production systems, distribution/logistics, marketing, financial management, and use of biomass. It also outlines programs to help farmers develop business plans and skills to support innovative practices and businesses.

Long-term no-till research can provide valuable insights into crop production over many seasons. This research found that no-till soils generally had higher yields than tilled soils over time. No-till soils had cooler temperatures, held more water after rain, and had different soil biological properties and nutrient stratification compared to tilled soils. The impacts of no-till and fertilizer nitrogen on soil organic carbon and crop yields changed over the 50 years of the study.

This document summarizes the results of soil health tests conducted on five fields with different tillage and cover cropping histories. Biological, chemical, and physical soil health indicators such as microbial biomass, soil organic matter, active carbon, and bulk density showed improved soil health in fields that were no-tilled or had cover crops for longer durations compared to conventionally tilled fields or fields with shorter cover cropping histories. Long-term no-till and cover cropping practices increased soil organic matter, microbial activity, and nutrient availability and decreased bulk density compared to conventional tillage systems.

Editor's Notes
So why all the pigs in Iowa?
Production is made up of a lot of people and a lot of different business and production structures. Allied industry: research, service, sales, supply, education
Each phase of production requires some unique skills. While sow farms are much fewer in number they are much more dynamic operation and a great economic generator in the community. Import half our feeder pigs.
2499 hd wn-fin = $28,874 NPK less $16,000 app cost, nets $12,875 (57-30-30 /1000 gal x 800,000 gal) .8gal/pig/day
Crate-free, free-range, GMO free diet, high omega, herbal additives, acorns,. Companies (corporate) are in these niches too now
Costs will be higher so must capture a stable premium. Don’t flood the market and work very hard at retaining the market and further value-added business.
Items that aren’t necessarily spelled out in the paper contract; issue of character, stability, “partnership”
What’s not here: mortality management; labor wages, VEB’s, site maintenance (mowing & snow removal, …)
Ballpark numbers
A 2400 hd site fits a section of land very nicely and we’ll talk about that later [the balance of manure nutrients, labor and investment]
What brings value to a farm and makes it a good site.
Other factors would be rendering management (out of sight, clean, timely) and sufficient gravel (not muddy and big/accessible for feed delivery and pig trucks)
Courtesy of Successful Farming. Lots of commentary to add on true ownership/management structures, independents vs integrators, Iowa finishing
Packers are doing very well. That is a good thing for the industry. And it is why we are seeing new packing plants being built. There is stability & longevity in Iowa production.
There’s profit in packing and the sign of increased shackle space indicates we can expand the industry centered in the Midwest when combined with exports (next slide)
Exports: here’s where the hope in the future lies
China is a hungry consumer and we have great opportunity to capture more of China.
Met with opposition in Mason City, the Wright County site is an excellent choice. The plant will be located 5 miles south of Eagle Grove on Hwy. 17. This is at the center of hog production in Iowa – with 6.5 million hogs marketed within 250 miles of the facility.
Daily 52 livestock trucks and about the same numbers refrigerated trucks.
Partnering with Eagle Grove on a new wastewater treatment facility.
New FDA guidelines effective Jan 1, 2017 place VFD (Veterinary Feed Directive ) requirements [aka, like prescriptions] on antibiotics of human importance. Also, the use of antibiotics at subtherapeutic levels for “growth promotion and feed efficiency” are being removed from the label.
Improvements in all of the above (housing, nutrition, health, management) minimize adverse effects of stress. These are areas of focus in improving health and productivity with decreased dependency on antibiotics.
Where is our industry going and what do we need to focus on.
