Eliminating Secret Sprawl in the Cloud with HashiCorp Vault - 07.11.2018HashiCorp
Managing secrets in a distributed cloud world requires a new approach to security. Applications and systems are now frequently created and destroyed. The network between distributed clouds, applications, and systems is low-trust, furthering the complexities of secrets sprawl. So, what is the solution?
HashiCorp Vault seeks to solve the problem of secret sprawl by centralizing secrets management in a scalable, repeatable workflow to be able to create, manage, and revoke secrets as needed.
Watch this webinar to learn:
- How Vault addresses today’s security threats
- How security teams can use Vault to store and manage all their secrets across their private and public infrastructure, globally.
- How Adobe reduced secret sprawl, increased operational performance of a key security process, and processes 100 trillion transactions with Vault

Sounds daunting right? But there is always a case where your organisation has either a custom, or third party system that you could leverage generating secrets for, or maybe an IAM system that doesn't quite fit on the ones included in Vault. Well, a couple of months ago I went from "no go" to writing my first plugin from Vault, and I'd like to tell you how I did it. This talk doesn't require you to know go, but it does require a minimal level of understanding of object oriented programming.
Migrating from the data center to the cloud requires us to rethink much of what we do to secure our applications. The idea of physical security morphs as infrastructure becomes virtualized by AWS APIs. In a new world of ephemeral, auto-scaling infrastructure, you need to adapt your security architecture to meet both compliance and security threats. In the presentation we will cover topics including: - Minimize attack vectors and surface area - Perimeter assessments of your VPCs - Internal vs. External threats - Monitoring threats - Re-evaluating Intrusion Detection, Activity Monitoring, and Vulnerability Assessment in AWS

Security has become more and more important as we move to the cloud and countries & companies are being hacked – remember the Sony hack? But how do we securely store sensitive data such as connection strings to our databases? Where do we store our encryption keys? Can I share them with my customers? How do I prevent abuse of my secrets and block them from doing so?
That’s what this session is all about – I will introduce you to the concepts of Microsoft Azure Key Vault where you can use this as it allows you to securely store keys, credentials and other secrets in the cloud. We will also have a look at how it enables us to store encryption keys for SQL Server TDE and how it can help you safeguard your cloud solutions even more.

Shared Security Responsibility Model of AWSAkshay Mathur
I heard many people saying that they need not worry about security of their application (or it is automatically PCI compliant) just because the application is hosted in AWS EC2.
This was presented in AWS meetup to make it clear to audience that security is shared responsibility. While AWS takes care of security at L1 & L2 and provide tools for L3 & L4, we need to take care of security at L7 (Application layer)

From Zero to Serverless (CoderCruise 2018)Chad Green
So many times our customers need a simple routine that can be executed on a routine basis but the solution doesn’t need to be an elaborate solution without going the trouble of setting servers and other infrastructure. Serverless computer is the abstraction of servers, infrastructure, and operating systems and make getting solutions to your customer’s needs much quicker and cheaper. During this session we will look at how Azure Functions will enable you to run code on-demand without having to explicitly provision or manage infrastructure.

Over the past 1.5 decade our industry has tried to adopt an increased amount of infrastructure automation. We called it Configuration Management, Infrastructure as Code, infrastructure as Software, Provisioning, Orchestration. We learned about Desired State, Idempotence, etc.. We have seen a number of tools become popular; we have seen a number of tools disappear. But over the years we have seen a number of patterns appear and reappear. Patterns that lead to actually getting great benefits out of automation, or just wasting time while missing out on goals. This talk will explain you a number of these patterns which we have frequently encountered in the wild, with their benefits and caveats. We will try to keep this tool agnostic. Your vision might be Clouded, and you might have to take this with a grain of Salt while you play the Chef from the Muppet show the story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in this production are fictitious. How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

2. Ponder
• For every 25 percent increase in problem complexity, there is a
100 percent increase in solution complexity.
• There is seldom one best design solution to a software problem.
• If cars were like software, they would crash twice a day for no
reason, and when you called for service, they’d tell you to
reinstall the engine.

5. Agenda
• What are Patterns?
• The External Configuration Pattern
• The Cache Aside Pattern
• The Federated Identity Pattern
• The Valet Key Pattern
• The Gatekeeper Pattern
• The Circuit Breaker Pattern
• The Retry Pattern
• The Strangler Pattern
• Questions
@taswarbhatti
11. What are Patterns?
• General reusable solution to a recurring problem
• A template on how to solve a problem
• Best practices
• Patterns allow developers communicate with each other in well
known and understand names for software interactions.
@taswarbhatti
13. External Configuration Pattern
• Helps move configuration information out of the application
deployment
• This pattern can provide for easier management and control of
configuration data
• For sharing configuration data across applications and other
application instances
@taswarbhatti
17. Problems
• Configuration becomes part of deployment
• Multiple applications share the same configuration
• Hard to have access control over the configuration
@taswarbhatti
19. When to use the pattern
• When you have shared configuration, multiple application
• You want to manage configuration centrally by DevOps
• Provide audit for each configuration
@taswarbhatti
20. When not to use
• When you only have a single application there is no need to use
this pattern it will make things more complex
@taswarbhatti
23. Cache Aside Pattern
• Load data on demand into a cache from datastore
• Helps improve performance
• Helps in maintain consistency between data held in the cache
and data in the underlying data store.
@taswarbhatti
26. When to use the pattern
• Resource demand is unpredictable.
• This pattern enables applications to load data on demand
• It makes no assumptions about which data an application will
require in advance
@taswarbhatti
27. When not to use
• Don’t use it for data that changes very often
@taswarbhatti
28. Things to consider
• Sometimes data can be changed from outside process
• Have an expiry for the data in cache
• When update of data, invalidate the cache before updating the
data in database
• Pre populate the data if possible
@taswarbhatti
31. Federated Identity Pattern
• Delegate authentication to an external identity provider.
• Simplify development, minimize the requirement for user
administration
• Improve the user experience of the application
• Centralized providing MFA for user authentication
@taswarbhatti
34. Problem
• Complex development and maintenance (Duplicated code)
• MFA is not an easy thing
• User administration is a pain with access control
• Hard to keep system secure
• No single sign on (SSO) everyone needs to login again to
different systems
@taswarbhatti
36. When to use
• When you have multiple applications and want to provide SSO
for applications
• Federated identity with multiple partners
• Federated identity in SAAS application
@taswarbhatti
37. When not to use it
• You already have a single application and have custom code
that allows you to login
@taswarbhatti
38. Things to consider
• The identity Server needs to be highly available
• Single point of failure, must have HA
• RBAC, identity server usually does not have authorization
information
• Claims and scope within the security auth token
@taswarbhatti
41. Valet Key Pattern
• Use a token that provides clients with restricted direct access to
a specific resource
• Provide offload data transfer from the application
• Minimize cost and maximize scalability and performance
@taswarbhatti
45. When to use it
• The application has limited resources
• To minimize operational cost
• Many interaction with external resources (upload, download)
• When the data is stored in a remote data store or a different
datacenter
@taswarbhatti
46. When not to use it
• When you need to transform the data before upload or
download
@taswarbhatti
49. Gatekeeper Pattern
• Using a dedicated host instance that acts as a broker between
clients and services
• Protect applications and services
• Validates and sanitizes requests, and passes requests and data
between them
• Provide an additional layer of security, and limit the attack
surface of the system
@taswarbhatti
53. When to use it
• Sensitive information (Health care, Authentication)
• Distributed System where perform request validation separately
@taswarbhatti
54. When not to use
• Performance vs security
@taswarbhatti
55. Things to consider
• WAF should not hold any keys or sensitive information
• Use a secure communication channel
• Auto scale
• Endpoint IP address (when scaling application does the WAF
know the new applications)
@taswarbhatti
57. Circuit Breaker Pattern
• To handle faults that might take a variable amount of time to
recover
• When connecting to a remote service or resource
@taswarbhatti
62. When to use it
• To prevent an application from trying to invoke a remote service
or access a shared resource if this operation is highly likely to fail
• Better user experience
@taswarbhatti
63. When not to use
• Handling access to local private resources in an application, such
as in-memory data structure
• Creates an overhead
• Not a substitute for handling exceptions in the business logic of
your applications
@taswarbhatti
66. Retry Pattern
• Enable an application to handle transient failures
• When the applications tries to connect to a service or network
resource
• By transparently retrying a failed operation
@taswarbhatti
69. When to use it
• Use retry for only transient failure that is more than likely to
resolve themselves quicky
• Match the retry policies with the application
• Otherwise use the circuit break pattern
@taswarbhatti
70. When not to use it
• Don’t cause a chain reaction to all components
• For internal exceptions caused by business logic
• Log all retry attempts to the service
@taswarbhatti
71. Libraries
• Roll your own code
• Polly (http://www.thepollyproject.org/)
• Netflix (Hystrix) https://github.com/Netflix/Hystrix/wiki
@taswarbhatti
74. Strangler Pattern
• Incrementally migrate a legacy system
• Gradually replacing specific pieces of functionality with new
applications and services
• Features from the legacy system are replaced by new system
features eventually
• Strangling the old system and allowing you to decommission it
@taswarbhatti
77. When to use
• Gradually migrating a back-end application to a new
architecture
@taswarbhatti
78. When not to use
• When requests to the back-end system cannot be intercepted
• For smaller systems where the complexity of wholesale
replacement is low
@taswarbhatti
79. Considerations
• Handle services and data stores that are potentially used by
both new and legacy systems.
• Make sure both can access these resources side-by-side
• When migration is complete, the strangler façade will either go
away or evolve into an adaptor for legacy clients
• Make sure the façade doesn't become a single point of failure or
a performance bottleneck.
