This document contrasts the differences between thinking as a scientist versus a practitioner. A scientist builds explicit taxonomies of knowledge, tests hypotheses detached as a passive observer, and generalizes knowledge through controlling variables and statistical analysis. A practitioner builds implicit schema through situated, engaged experience, applies hunches as an active participant impacted by the environment, and contextualizes knowledge through perceptual analysis of cause and effect within a situation. Both are important modes of thinking in psychological inquiry.
