60 Minutes Essay
60 Minute s 2013 episode, Lost and Found on Channel Nine told the heart warming story of Saroo
Brierley, who was once a lost young boy on busy Indian streets. 60 Minutes effectively use their short
time frame to tell this unique story of impossible odds, pure love and sheer determination, reminding
the viewers that anything is possible with determination. Through the use of interviews, re enactments
and various film techniques the intent of the documentary is successfully achieved.
Opening with the chaotic streets of India showing the complexity of the daily life and the possibility
of getting lost. The camera captures Saroo walking the streets, euphoric and content as he takes in the
world despite the absolute chaos around him. Through showing the chaotic streets of India the
director, Garith Harvey, provokes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a fond point of view of Saroo s story which at times is shown through the over exaggeration of
certain troubles Saroo faced. Additionally, three years later a film is made about Saroo s story, Lion

on 60 Minutes has the intention to publicise the film, which brings up the thought about if the
documentary s main intention was influence the production of the film.
In conclusion, Lost and Found is a successful documentary as it evokes various emotions in the viewer
and successfully meets its intention. Additionally, Garith successfully makes Allision feel part of the
family by avoiding a traditional style of interviewing. The audio, camera angles and lighting effects
were appropriate to the mood of the current scene which assisted in manipulating the viewer.
Ultimately, Lost and Found is exceptionally well made as it successfully manipulates the viewer s
emotions according to the documentary s

The Glass Ceiling In The Workplace
Over the past few years, the percentage of women in lower managerial positions has increased
tremendously while the number of women who reach the top is still just a small proportion. They are
held back by an invisible barrier that is named the glass ceiling (Dreher, 2003).
The glass ceiling is a concept that is repeatedly used in studies, analyzing inequalities between men
and women in the workplace (Baxter Wright, 2000). The phenomenon glass ceiling has been used
universally in the media as well as in official government reports (US Department of Labor, 1991; A
fact finding report of the Federal glass ceiling commission, 1995) and academic publications.
The federal Glass Ceiling Commission was founded in 1991 with its mandate to identify certain
barriers that have blocked the promotion of minorities and women. They refer to the glass ceiling as
an Unseen, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nowadays people refer to the glass ceiling when describing a situation where women and minorities
are held back from advancing to a certain level (Jackson, 2001).
Although women can get access to the first levels of managerial hierarchies, at some point they will
hit an invisible barrier that blocks them of any further upward movement. As one of the early writers,
who used the metaphor, Hymowitz and Schellhardt (1986) describes the glass ceiling as an obstacle in
organizational hierarchies that is situated just below the top management level (Dreher, 2003).
The definition of the concept glass ceiling has changed over time. Taken literally, the metaphor of the
glass ceiling implies the existence of an impermeable barrier that blocks the vertical mobility, below
this barrier women and minorities, are able to get hired by male dominated organizations, and can get
promoted, above this barrier they are not. (Baxter Wright, 2000). Sometimes they are considered to be
promoted to a higher position, but rarely reach that position (Maume,

Mother-Daughter Conflict in Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club...
We live in a mobile and global world with the development of the technology. Still America continues
to be the symbol of the land of freedom and of opportunity. Arriving to America, the Chinese
immigrants who come from a traditional, structured, old world struggle to find a balance in a modern
and dynamic new world. In order to realize the American dream, the first generation of immigrants
have to learn the language, acquire education, and assimilate into the dominant culture. They
courageously leave the past behind except what they carry in their memory. Thus, immigrants often
experience shock and resistance in dealing with the new world culture. This is especially true for the
second generation Chinese Americans who resist and are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both Tan and Maxine Hong Kingston recognize the difficulties faced by women in such a regimented
society. Kingston in The Woman Warrior tells of the folk sayings that proclaimed the worthlessness of
women, such as [t]here s not profit in raising girls. Better to raise geese than girls, or [w]hen fishing
for treasures in the flood, be careful not to pull in girls (195,6). According to Anne P. Standley,
Kingston tells of her lifelong struggle to fashion an identity on her own terms and to draw sustenance
from her Chinese culture while rejecting its sexist values (165).
For her part, Tan in Joy Luck Club illustrates the cultural differences between these two conflicting
generations by alternating the voices of the mothers with those of the daughters. Four mothers with a
painful past in pre 1949 describe their struggles in China against traditional female roles and family
domination. By coming to America they are bringing their hope for a better life which they try to
instill into their children. At the start of the book, Jing Mei sits in the seat for her deceased mother
who had started the mah jong club in 1949 in San Francisco. The Joy Luck aunties inform Jing Mei
that she has two half sisters in China. She has to go to China to instill in the sisters the spirit of their
mother. Jing Mei cries out, What can I tell about my mother? I don t know anything (31). Jing Mei is
ashamed of her cultural background. She thinks of

King Leopold s Ghost Sparknotes
King Leopold s Ghost tells the narrative of the struggles experienced by those in the Congo following
the discovery of rubber and the privatized funds of a King Leopold of Belgium. Recounted by Adam
Hochschild, a lecturer at the University of California Berkeley s School of Journalism, it gives light to
the stomach turning truths of imperialism. King Leopold s Ghost falls to critics in some aspects, as
highlighted in a review by Lysle Meyer. Meyer, works for the African Studies and has written a book
regarding this specific subject. The novel, which successfully exposes the horror of King Leopold s
rubber empire in Congo, lacks sources as well as contains simplistic prose that can seem dull at times.
Meyer s review of the novel agrees that the book is well informative; however, Meyer also states that
without due sourcing the book falls short of expectations for the average historian. One can easily
agree with this point, as there is quite obviously no footnotes. Meyer makes this point stating . . . the
publisher has eschewed footnotes, presumably in deference to the average reader s reputed aversion to
them. ( Review 2 ). In an attempt to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hochschild wrote of a particularly interesting topic, one that seems to be perused by most historians. It
is very clear that he gets off topic in an attempt to foreshadow, but it ends up making the writing long
and hard to follow. This deducts from his aim to the average reader, as a student will likely find the
writing monotonous. Even at one point, Hochschild relates But that is getting ahead of our story (KLG
165). This makes the writing unorganized, as he goes off track multiple times instead of narrating the
story. He makes points without going back to consider relevancy, and fails to make the connections

The Importance Of Food Allergies
According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), food allergies are
defined as an adverse immune response that occurs upon on exposure to a given food and is distinct
from other adverse responses to food. Food allergies are an increasingly prevalent and chronic
condition that requires attentive management by those affected by it . According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, more than 50 million Americans have an allergy of some kind. Food
allergies are estimated to affect 4 to 6 percent of children and 4 percent of adults. Food allergies are
most commonly seen in babies and children, but they can appear at any stage in life. A food allergy is
an immune response that typically occurs after food is ingested. Symptoms usually occur immediately
or within hours of ingestion, and can affect the cutaneous, gastrointestinal, cardiac and/or respiratory
systems (Crain, 2011). Current management includes avoidance of the offending food and emergency
medications as needed. It is estimated that 1 in 13 children have a food allergy. As reactions to food
allergies can be severe and even fatal, it is important for those who have food allergies to fully
understand how to manage them. Some of the most common food allergies include peanut allergy,
Cow s milk protein allergy, more common than food allergies are food intolerances, which can cause
vomiting, diarrhea, spitting up, and skin rashes. A food intolerance differs from allergies because

Analysis Of The Book Coriolanus And Titus Andronicus
Coriolanus and Titus Andronicus are Roman warrior heroes who both become maniacal revengers
when Rome rejects them. Titus sees his revenge carried out, while Coriolanus gives up to his mother
before his revenge is achieved. While Titus decisions allow him to experience victory and defeat,
Coriolanus decisions cheat him out of the victory of revenge and he experiences only defeat at the
hand of his once enemy, Aufidus. Firstly, the Rome s that Coriolanus and Titus come from are very
different place in custom and time. For Coriolanus, he comes from a Rome that is still run by the
senate, before the time of Caesar. This Rome is less about conquest and more about the Republic. The
people are still a minority in the government but because of mob mentality they play an important role
in Coriolanus. Unlike Titus, Coriolanus is trying to get elected to the highest position possible under
the republic. Titus comes from a Rome after the death of Caesar, but needs to be punctuated by the
fact that it is a fictional Rome made by Shakespeare. In this fictional Rome, the people play little to no
role and the microcosm is mostly centered on the upper crust of Roman society and the court. These
versions of Rome play to the success and failure of both Coriolanus and Titus.
In the opening of both plays, the title characters are described as Roman warriors who have retained
hero status for their actions in war, defending Rome. Coriolanus is a hyper masculine figure who is
loved by the

My Story Of The School Year Of 2010-2011
My story begins in the school year of 2010 2011. I was a fifth grader, eleven years of age, at Santa Fe
5/6 Center. As per requirements we had to take a music class, and I knew that I could not sing, so an
instrument it was. Most of that year I spent experimenting with wind and string instruments to find out
if I belonged in band or orchestra. I was never really interested in any of the wind instrument so I
atleast knew I was going to be in orchestra. The year ended with me being skeptical to if I should play
an instrument or not.
With the next school year approaching fast I had to make my decision. A few days before sixth grade
started, Santa Fe hosted a little music assembly for the students and their parents to come and enjoy
music and also to provide instruments for the students to try out and possibly buy. I remember walking
around a tad bit nervous looking for an instrument and that s when I heard someone start playing the
cello. I turned to look and saw a man, Mr. Stanley, who later I found out was my cello teacher, playing
the cello. He played so beautifully it inspired me. The warm, rich tone of the cello filled the room and
I remember almost everyone stopped what they were doing just to listen to him play. I think mother
saw the glint in my eyes when I first listened to the cello and she knew that was my choice. After Mr.
Stanley s little performance was done, I approached him and bombarded him with questions. In the
end Mother ended up buying a three fourths

There are 206 bones in the human body. Broken and fractured bones are one of the most common
injuries, about 6 million people in the US will break a bone each year. And out of these 300,000
people will have a serious injury that will require different methods to heal. There are a variety ways
of bone tissue repairing but most of them are not long term and can cause other complications. There
are different stages for bone repair. The first step is the formation of hematoma at the break, then the
formation of a fibrocartilaginous callus, the third step is the formation of a bony callus, and finally
remodeling and addition of compact bone. In the early stages, a hematoma develops within the

Romanticism And Romance In Wuthering Heights
How does Bronte concentrate on the interaction of realism and romance within the novel? Emily
Bronte concentrate on romance and show the love story between Heathcliff and Catherine, also show
to us romantic ideals and Gothic romances .There was great stress in spirits in Wuthering Heights. On
the other side, Bronte concentrate on realism the lack of conventional heroine, the truth of real
feelings and emotions. She focused on the dialogue and behavior of the characters of Wuthering
Heights and Thrushcross Grange and show the realities of domestic life, social exclusion, and
economic dispossession. We can know Heathcliff s character and how Catherine love him. The end of

We might describe Wuthering Heights as romance because it is a love story, it can be a work of
imagination or because it has an important relationship to the Romantic period in literature, also the
novel is described as hybrid. There are two parallel love stories, in the first half of the novel Bronte
concentrate on the love of Heathcliff and Catherine but in the second half there was a less dramatic
love story between little Catherine and Hareton. The love story of Heathcliff and Catherine is rooted
in their childhood and is marked by the refusal to change. Catherine and Heathcliff were identical in
sharing their perception. Catherine declares, famously, I am Heathcliff, while Heathcliff, upon
Catherine s death, screams that he cannot live without his soul, meaning Catherine. Catherine and
Heathcliff s declarations of a union of souls. Heathcliff was described as a Byronic or Gothic hero
villain might be manageable. Wuthering Heights has strong connection with Gothic romances over
and beyond the Gothic characteristics of Heathcliff. Gothic novels put in an atmosphere of terror and
using equipment of ghosts and the weather outside the house of Wuthering Heights and one of aspects
of Gothic, Isabella and the second Catherine s incarceration at Wuthering Heights, also feminist
criticism established modes of reading the genre as psychological oppression of women. Relationship
between Heathcliff and Catherine is sibling love rather than adulterous romantic passion. This
relationship with Romantic poetry means that Heathcliff, after Catherine s death, becomes a Romantic
hero, with a capital R , rather than a romantic hero with a small

James s observation seems to be true based on the exhibit 1 where all the player are showing long term
debt to equity ratio. Based on the industry insight, James questions the Winfield s policy against debt.
We agree with James analysis based on the industry insight. It is a relatively stable industry with
steady forecasts. Probably that is the reason that all other major players do not hesitate in taking long
term debt. We also do not see any reason to avoid long term debt in Winfield.
Q3 How should the acquisition of MPIS be financed, taking into account the issues of control,
flexibility, income, and risk?
Let s look into both the options (debt vs stock) on all the 4 parameters: control, flexibility, income, and
risk.
Control
Winfield is a publicly traded company however, majority of the stocks (79%) are held by Winfield
management. Winfield management will continue to hold 79% stocks if they are raising funds through
debt however, their share will drop to 54% if they decide to raise the money through common stocks.

Boys vs. Girls
An Analysis of Katha Pollitt s Girls Against Boys? The article titled Girls Against Boys, published in
the 30 January issue of The Nation magazine by author Katha Pollitt, brings to light pressing issues of
gender discrimination and how this nation s education system has changed over the past forty years
but still isn t up to par with where it needs to be with issues of gender equality. Pollitt exposes the
views of conservatives toward feminism in the school systems of today. This article describes how
changes in society are taking place, and what the future may hold for men and women in the world of
employment and education. Pollitt begins with the mention of equal access admissions instituted in
1975 which leads into how the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

about the current dating scene and whether or not it consists of women who love fine art and men who
love video games; this implies that females are the educated ones in today s dating scene. Next Pollitt
focuses on the sexist nature of the labor market; describing how women need the credentials of a
college degree more than men and how stereotypically male jobs that pay well don t require a college
degree, furthermore showing that the scales have been tipped toward men more than women in today s
society. Pollitt says that Maybe boys focus less on school because they think they ll come out ahead.
The next statement in the article comes from Heather Boushey from the Center for Economic Policy
and Research where it is noted that female students take out more loans than male classmates. Pollitt
then says that this makes sense if a BA makes the difference between respectable well paying job and
a lifetime as a waitress or a file clerk. This is written to back up her earlier comment that boys can get
a well paying job today without an education while on the other hand women require a degree unless
they re willing to accept a low paying job because there aren t as many female friendly well paying
jobs in the job market that can be acquired with out a college

The Real Inspector Hound Contrasting settings, ideals and people dominate The Real Inspector

Felicity, Simon is the contrast of Magnus, and so on. Tom Stoppard has included these contrasts for a
variety of reasons and effects that combine to create the disturbing effect of the play incredibly
effectively. But what individual effects do his characters create by opposing each other so accurately.

other type of critic, the sort who does waffle about the meaning of life and reality in his reviews.
Ironically, despite these characters being totally obvious as opposites, as the audience have worked out
from just a few lines of speech, Moon defines his opposite as Higgs, leaving Birdboot out of the
question. The audiences now how some time to scoff at Stoppard s flimsy attempt to create realistic
critics. This effect is just what Stoppard wanted from the opposing critics in the opening scene. The

contain many similarities and differences in their persecution and accusation of people who are

circumstances, including the accusation of one person leading to a mass hysteria enveloping a society

including time, society structure, and the magnitude of the event. McCarthyism is named for Joseph

Another similarity between the two events is the fear of the unknown fear that swept through America
during these two time periods. In the 1600s, the people of Salem believed that they were besieged by
the devil, and became so scared of that possibility they began to see things from a perspective that led
them to believe that all things that happened that were not of a good nature were of the devil and
caused by a witch in the village. This movement reappeared in the McCarthy era, when people began
to see others spying, sending money, and supporting communism when, in fact, they were totally
against communism. Perhaps these people needed to read The Crucible and see how much they
resembled the girls in Salem on their witch hunt. In all their similarity, there are some major
differences between The Crucible and the McCarthyism of the fifties. The most obvious difference is
the four hundred year gap between the events of The Crucible and the events that occurred during the
McCarthyism period. This gap represents a distinct and different society between the two events in
history, and shows that circumstances pertaining to these events cannot be the same. Also, the source
of fear is different between the two times in history. The people of Salem feared what they considered

The Representation Of Macbeth In William Shakespeare s Play
Anokhi Ladhani
The deepest darkest corners of man s heart is filled with greed, violence, and selfishness. This rules
every man s thoughts and actions. Whether they would like to admit it or not, there is a facade of
genuity, a charade of sincerity, and a parody of the good deeds done everyday. No one is one hundred
percent candid about what they are thinking, and that s what I saw in Macbeth in the play by William
Shakespeare. His appearance when he went to battle, his murderous actions against children and his
apparent disregard for his wife s death as shown in the film adaption, developed my understanding of
Macbeth s cynical representation.

Death Of A Salesman And The American Dream
The United States in the mid twentieth century was a time of change. In the 1960 s the civil rights and
women s rights were in their embryonic stages. All of these ideas coming together created the illusion
of The American Dream. Back then; the American dream was equated with freedom and material
prosperity, two concepts that ring true today. The definition of the American dream changes as society
in the United States changes, and the connotation and reality of the American Dream is disheartening.
Two literary compositions give a realistic outlook on what the American Dream really is. In Death of a
Salesman and The American Dream, Arthur Miller and Edward Albee masterfully relay the true nature
and ideologies of The American Dream. In theory, the American Dream is the idea that every person
residing in the United States of America should live a richer and fuller life, regardless of the class one
is born in. It is not a dream about cars, high wages, and a picket fence. The idea, for it to work, is
supposed to be that every man and woman in this beautiful country has the ability to gain the highest
class in their ability regardless of their previous background. The ability to achieve such high success
is based on academic success and hard work. In current times, it seems the American Dream has
become a pursuit of material objects. Citizens of the United States work countless hours to be able to
afford bigger cars, better homes, and the newest technologies. On the surface,

Feminist Theory In Thornton Wilder s Our Town
In Our Town, there are many themes that are present in the play. There are many instances where the

garden could be if one was to admire how the colors are. He mentions the sunflowers and how bright
they are and how they add to the overall effect of pleasantness to the town. The play could also

The European Union Of Ban Commercial Seal Products
Abstract
This paper delves into the disputes brought against the European Union by Canada and Norway. In
doing so, the specifics of the disputes will be discussed and the World Trade Organization s policies
and procedures that have thus far allowed for the European Union to ban commercial seal products
from these two countries. The research done on the topic of sealing will cover the regulations in both
the Canadian and Norwegian seal fishing and also how their communities are impacted economically.
The European Union s main argument is that neither of these countries regulations on humane killing
are efficient enough in ensuring that humane killings can occur at all times. Because of this, they
continue to defend that their regulations go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They have several arguments, including the following: seal products from Canada and Norway are
treated less favorably compared to the European Union s (EU) domestic seal products and Greenland
s, the EU Seal Regime (measure that prohibits seal products into the EU) creates obstacles and trade
restrictions that are unnecessary and that some of the procedural requirements go against requirements
of the conformity assessment, Travellers conditions create quantitative restrictions on trade, and the
Regime hurts any benefits accrued to them under covered agreements (Panel Report, 2013). The EU,
on the other hand, claims that their Seal Regime meets obligations of the World Trade Organization
(WTO). Three conditions applied to seal products are as follows: the products were received from
seals hunted by Inuit or Indigenous communities, the products were received from seals hunted for
marine resource management, and travelers are allowed to bring seal products in limitation. The EU
claims that the regulations put into place in 2009 and 2010 were implemented because of public moral
concerns involving the welfare of seals; people should not cause suffering of animals without clear
justification (Europa, 2013). The EU argue that inconsistencies claimed by Canada and Norway within
the GATT 1994 should be considered as justified because they are working to protect public morals
and seals health. They also argue that, under the TBT Agreement, any

FISA Pros And Cons
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) was first enacted in 1978, and later amended,
including in 1994, by the Patriot Act, and by 2008 it became the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act
Amendments. In 1972, the Supreme Court chose the case of United States v. United States District
Court, otherwise called the Keith case, in which the Court considered the legality of an Attorney
General approved warrantless electronic surveillance of a United States citizen blamed for bombing a
Central Intelligence Agency building. The Court rejected the government s appeal to acknowledge a
foreign intelligence special case to the per se warrant prerequisite, holding that the Fourth Amendment
prohibited warrantless surveillance directed at domestic threats to United States national security. The
Court directly refused to choose the legality of warrantless surveillances where foreign powers or their
agents were included, leaving open the issue of the Executive s power to direct such operational
activities at those persons or elements. The Court likewise firmly asked the Congress to supply a
judicially manageable standard appropriate to surveillances conducted for national security purposes.

Models Of Abnormal Psychology
There are various models of abnormality. Such models include the biological model, psychodynamic
model, behavioral model, cognitive model, humanistic existential model, and the sociocultural model.
Models of abnormality explain the causes and treatments for all psychological illnesses. Psychologists
don t believe in all of these models, they are considered theories due to being based off a psychologist
s own beliefs and assumptions. These theories are even more complex as many have theories within
themselves. This proves that psychology is ever expanding, fascinating, and complex.
The biological model sees physical processes as the key to human behavior. Biological theorists

Behaviors change in response to their environment. The behaviors which are learned help people cope
with their daily challenges. Many behaviors are achieved through conditioning. Operant conditioning
is teaching someone to behave a certain way through rewards. Modeling is learning behaviors through
observing others. Classical conditioning is when learning occurs by temporal association. When two
events repeatedly occur close together in time, they become fused in a person s mind, and before long
the person responds in the same way to both events. Behavioral therapists goal is to identify what
behavior are contributing to a person s problems and replace them with ones more appropriate. This
model is one of the most appealing due to its capability of being studied in a lab while psychodynamic
theories generally are incapable of

Themes Of Monster By Walter Dean Myers
Monster by Walter Dean Myers has varied themes that the author wants the reader to take away after
reading the novel. Monster is about a sixteen year old named Steve Harmon that was accused of
felony murder. Harmon has never committed a crime before and the novel is his version of a movie
script; the reader only knows what he writes down. Harmon has his own notes throughout the script
and he describes everything that is going on while the trial goes on. Evidently, the theme for Monster
is that telling the truth will depend on the future. In the view of this theme, there are numerous points
in the text that resemble it. In the text, it states, Mr. Harmon did go into the store with the purpose of...

The text states, CUT TO: STEVE sitting in back of van. He holds his hands out in front of his face.
They are shaking. CUT TO: STEVE on the stand (Myers 222). These stage directions show that
Harmon does not know where he is heading. We know that Haron is on the stand and has to answer
questions. He is only a teenager and lying in court can have a large effect on his life. Also in the text,
it states Harmon s name and to the right it says nervously in parenthesis. This also shows that he is
stressed and having anxiety while on trial. This relates to the theme because if anyone would lie on
while on trial, it can jeopardize a free life. The text also states, STEVE spreads his arms to hug O
BRIEN, but she stiffens and turns to pick up her papers... when Miss O Brien looked at me, after we
had won the case, what did she see that caused her to turn away (Myers 276, 281). The stage
directions and Harmon s own notes show that O Brien thought that he was guilty. Even though
Harmon was claimed not guilty, it does not mean that he did not commit the crime. In addition, this is
Harmon s movie; he could be lying and writing down whatever he wants. This relates to the theme
because lying could show true colors to others. O Brien thinks of Harmon as a Monster and someone
that cannot be

The Word Love In The New Testament And Old Testament
Love is taken in many directions in the New Testament and Old Testament. The way God and Jesus
Christ present this emotion throughout the bible, shows a better understanding of unconditional love to
others. Love is one of the characteristics of God and an important part of His nature. Therefore, I will
bring forth explanation of how well the word Love is used from translation to translation. My research
will be coming out of the New Testament and Old Testament, even though there are many other books
I could talk about for the word love. In the New Testament, Almost everyone knows that God so loved
the world (John 3:16) and God is love (John 4:8), and when love appears nobody can express it better
than Jesus. We mainly hear about love in the beginning of the first Corinthians ( 1 CO 13) at wedding
ceremonies. As new translation were coming out over the years, the version NIV used love as sex acts
in Genesis to express the word rather than KJV and ESV used love as knowing the feeling and NASB
used love as strong relations. In the 1 corinthians, Paul created a message saying, the love of god, the
love of jesus christ, and the love that the christian expresses in response to God s saving action in
Jesus Christ (samuel E Balentine). As I was looking into the new testament, the chapter called First
John stood out to me because majority of the words are love or something describing love. First John
was written to distinguish the differences between

Loisel s The Necklace
It seems a desire in human nature to want more and more things for the sake of having them and for
treasuring them. No matter the amount or cost some people have the tendency to obtain as much as
they can get, because they can never have enough stuff. The character of Madame Mithilde Loisel
from the short story, The Necklace, without a doubt has this trait. Monsieur and Madame (M. and
Mme.) Loisel are a couple living in Paris. Mme. Loisel, although beautiful, is very unhappy with the
life she has been given. One day, M. Loisel receives an invite to a nighttime ball, but Mme. Loisel
refuses to go unless she has something marvelous to showcase herself with. Her husband manages to
obtain a dress for her, and she manages to get a necklace from an old friend, Mme. Forestier. Once M.
and Mme. Loisel return from their amazing night at the ball, Mithilde realizes that she has ... Show

Loisel is something that ultimately shapes the events that occur in the story. Although she is in the
middle to low class part of society, she believes that she has the right to everything for her to be
perfect. [Mithilde] believes that superficial things a large house, a ball gown, and better furniture will
truly make her happy ( The Necklace ). It is said that she is stunning and absolutely beautiful, but she
[felt] that she had been born for all of the little necessities and luxuries for living (Maupassant, 70).
The blindness of her beauty and her dreams of riches lead to the conflict within the story. When
invited to attend a ball with her husband, Mme. Loisel refuses because she does not have the proper
attire. Her invitation to the party reminded her of her lack of jewels and ball gems. ( The Necklace ).
Her husband is unable to maintain a dress which is good enough by itself, but Mithilde argues that it
has to be as perfect as it can be and it could not be completed without some sort of accessory, and that
accessory will lead to her

starting and successfully managing your own business. FUNCTIONS OF A NEW CAPITAL
PROJECT If you are going to build a brewing operation from scratch, what you are considering is a
capital project that can be broken down into nine basic functions. Each function must be managed
properly, from conceptualization to start up. Whatever the type, form, style of brewing operation that
you are contemplating, whether it be called a boutique brewery, craft brewery, cottage brewery,
brewpub, microbrewery, etc., there are many questions, not just a few, that you will need to obtain the
answers for as they apply to your situation. You may already know the answers to some of the
questions but others you will have to research. To assist you in organizing the answers that you have
obtained to date and to identify some important questions which you may not have considered, the
following is a list of nine function steps that you must systematically and professionally proceed to do.
Important questions that you need to ask yourself and find the answers for are listed in point form for
your reference as a checklist of topics, problems, etc. to be covered under each function. The only
difference between the answers for the brewpub as compared to the mini brewery will be the depth
and detail of the answers, but the questions are common to all new brewery ventures. The answers

Language is our main means of communication and learning, without it we would not understand each
other efficiently enough to communicate our needs and thoughts. It is a very complicated feature of
human cognition. Yet children acquire language very naturally and quickly without any formal
instruction. Many language experts such as Chomsky (1965) and Pinker (2000) believe this suggests
that there is some innate predisposal to acquire language, by this it is meant a genetic mechanism that
holds what he calls the universal grammar common to all languages. Noam Chomsky call s language
the human essence (1972). He is a discontinuity theorist, this means he believes the human brain

Humans who began to learn language would find it easier to survive and then pass on their language
to their children and so on. Therefore Darwin s theory does not support Chomsky s claim of humans
having an innate predisposal to acquire languages as he believed it was something that has evolved
and then been developed over time, not something that has always been present in our genetics.
Most animals communicate with one another non verbally, for example some bee species have very
specific and evolved ways of communicating with each other about the location and quality of food
(Winston, 1987, p. 25) or the emperor penguin which uses an intricate set of calls that are very vital
for individual recognition between parents, offspring, and mates, demonstrating a very wide range of
individual calls from all the penguins (Williams 1995, p. 68). As all these forms of communication
appear to be very natural to the species they are relevant to, it suggests they are easily developed and
learnt through the social context the being is in. Perhaps this means that these forms of communication
are innately predisposed to the specific species, which would surely mean language to be innately
governed within humans as it s our way of communication. However one cannot really compare the
communications of animals to humans as the humans have a much greater mental capacity than that of
any other species. Although other species can communicate, the

says that they are behaving like a state whose power is rapidly declining . That those who are in

Visual Cliff Summary
Psychologists Eleanor J. Gibson and Richard D. Walk at Cornell University conducted the Visual Cliff
experiment to investigate depth perception in human and animal species. The visual cliff apparatus
allowed them to experimentally adjust the visual, tactical, and other stimuli associated with the
simulated cliff while protecting the experimental subjects from injury. The cliff is created by
connecting a transparent glass surface, which is supported a foot or more above the floor, to a sheet of
patterned material. On one side of the glass, the patterned sheet is placed against the glass, given the
glass a solid look. On the other side, a sheet of the same patterned material is placed on the floor
beneath the glass, creating the visual cliff. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Cognitive theory is based on internal states, such as motivation, decision making, thinking, and
attention. Children show some signs of thinking and decision making during the study; when the
infants were called from the cliff side, they examined the glass by patting it, and even though they feel
the solid glass they still didn t cross to their mothers. They also peered down the glass and backed
away. They didn t simply cross over, they stopped, thought wether this is safe to cross or not, and
made the decision to not cross regardless of the hardness of the glass they touched. This is where the
developmental theory comes. We learn that infants perception of depth develops faster than their
locomotors abilities. Many of the children did supported themselves on the glass as they maneuvered
awkwardly on the bored, and some even backed into the glass while looking at their mothers; if the
glass weren t there, they would have fallen and hurt themselves. I believe that this study will help
people understand that children should not be left alone on the edge of beds or any place

The Social Influences of the Visual Entertainment Media
American culture has a bi directional relationship with the visual media, in which expressions in
television and film manifest in society but social norms also manifest on the screen. Therefore, visual
media in the United States actually has the potential to alter social norms and interactions. The
television shows that were popular in the 1950s and early 1960s reflect the conservative family values
that were popular at that time in American history. The Brady Bunch, for example, shows a happy go
lucky white family, and highlights the suburban American dream. More contemporary shows show
how American social values and norms have evolved since the 1950s. In Will and Grace, gay
characters feature prominently to reflect the fact that Americans are coming out of the closet and
staying out. There are ample examples of how television reflects social norms, while actively working
to shape those norms as well.
For instance, the 1980s show The Cosby Show was one in which the middle class African American
family was portrayed for the first time on television. The production was a deliberate attempt to teach
new values that would help eliminate the standard stereotypes of African Americans that do not fit into
the white dominant culture. By producing The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby and other entertainers were
actively shaping the values and worldviews of Americans. In a more direct way, children s television
shows on PBS such as Sesame Street are written so that characters convey

Stress and Perfectionism in Academic Achievement Between Blue Ribbon Schools vs. Non blue
Ribbon Schools Erin Altenberger Northern Kentucky University Abstract Stress and Perfectionism in
Academic Achievement Between Blue Ribbon Schools vs. Non blue Ribbon Schools Damian,
Stoeber, Negru, and Baban (2014), describes perfectionism as endeavoring for flawlessness and
setting extremely high standards for oneself. There is not just one type of perfectionism; there are in
fact three different categories of perfectionism. The three categories included self oriented, other
oriented, and socially prescribed perfectionism. Self oriented perfectionism refers to an individual that
sets and seeks high standards of performance for themselves (Chang, 2006). Chang (2006) describes
other oriented perfectionism as an individual that assumes that others should be perfect in their
actions. Socially prescribed perfectionism refers to an individual that believes that those around them
anticipate perfectionism from him or her (Chang, 2006). With what we know about perfectionism and
the potential distress it may cause, one can consider that stress could be a component with
perfectionism. Pope (2005) portrays stress as the perceived shortcomings between demands and the
accessibility of resources to meet those demands. Stress is a feeling that affects people of all ages.
Stress impacts people in a large array of ways, which include emotionally, physically, and mentally

Essay about Death in Emily Dickenson
Death in Emily Dickenson
With the thought of death, many people become terrified as if it were some
creature lurking behind a door ready to capture them at any moment. Unlike many,
Emily Dickinson was infatuated with death and sought after it only to try and help
answer the many questions which she pondered so often. Her poetry best illustrates
the answers as to why she wrote about it constantly. She explains her reason for
writing poetry, I had a terror I could tell to none and so I sing, as the Boy does by
the Burying Ground because I am afraid. (Johnson xxiii). There is no doubt that
Emily Dickinson is frightened of death and the unknown life after it. To release her

was her only mentor at the time, Dickinson feared she would have no one to turn to for
direction. To add to the upset of the death of a loved one, the pressures from her
father to do well in school plagued her so much that she found her only refuge in
seclusion (Capps 15). Dressed in the purifying color of white, Dickinson turned to
life in the seclusion of her bedroom writing down her fears and pains of death and the
hope of life after death (Conarro 71). Withdrawing from traditional ways of
seeing, she separated her consciousness from almost all others and tried to understand
the phenomenon that is consciousness itself (Bu*censored* 1).
There were many things which Emily Dickinson tried to understand, but she
was particularly interested in the mystery of death. It is evident in her poetry
that, the idea of death was for her the overwhelming, omnipresent emotional experience
of her life, and powerfully influenced her poetry, especially in its intensity and
richness (Ferlazzo 64). It overtook her thoughts and became a obsession which she had
to satisfy; yet Dickinson would not confide in the church to help provide the food she
hungered for. Ford explains that she believed that having felt no inner conversion,
she could not honestly acknowledge allegiance to a church (18). He goes on to say
that, this

Women During The Greek Period
Women during The Greek Period and Now Art and sculptures have been created since the beginning
of mankind in order to express themselves and demonstrate human potential. From simple carvings on
a rock walls to magnificent works of art, such as the sixteenth chapel, art has continued to progress
throughout time and it continues to progresses even further. There are many different types of art to
depict different things the artist wants to transfer to his viewers if not created for himself. Since works
of art are made to express aspects within life, it creates symbolics meanings the vary on the message
the artist wants to give out. Besides symbolic meanings, a work of art can notify the viewer of the
history during the time period it was created, roles within society, the way people lived during the time
it was made, how society functioned, what they believed in, and many more things about life that are

and continue to do this in order to show what women meant to people during that time. Comparing an
old painting with a contemporary painting we can see how some aspects, techniques, and styles within
the art have changed and how women s roles have become different in society over the course of time.
We can also see what artistic aspects, techniques, and style have remained the same, and what we can

Recent studies, for example, Golder, Wilkinson and Huberman (2007), Arvanitis and Loukis (in press)
and Coyle and Vaughn (2008:13−17) concur that social networks are typical characterisations of
human behaviour to fulfil the need to communicate and connect with people they know, meet new
people who share a common interest, collaborate, participate and share information and knowledge as
well as gain new knowledge. Generally, these are also the reasons why individuals engage in social
behaviour via the Internet. To many, the Internet provides effective social networking opportunities
and their online behaviour includes building individual relationships, expanding their personal
network of friends, finding people who have had similar experiences, discussing common topics of
interest, dating and finding potential life partners, staying connected to old friends or distant family
and virtually meeting peers, including work colleagues, to discuss current issues or topics of interest.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Biometric Security System

ID cards are misused stolen counterfeited and so on. This increasing battle with cyber security
has led to the birth of biometric security systems. The Biometric security system is a fairly new
technology that has indeed impacted the lives of numerous persons. This essay will examine
what is meant by biometric security system as well as the advantages and disadvantages that

Well last, like all technological innovation the biometric security system does come with
disadvantages: one of the most important yet most unfortunate disadvantage is that it may cause
the loss of jobs for some person s example the innovation of this new technology makes some

to (Wikipedia ,2014) other disadvantages include in some situation the lack of privacy which
may even cause discrimination because when the information is enrolled and stored to the system
database the information may be used for things other than what the individual has consented .

Roaring 20 s Use Of Hindsight In The Great Depression
The problem with comprehension is, it often comes too late. Rasmenia Massoud is talking here about
what is called hindsight. Hindsight is the way in which you can understand a situation only after it has
happened or developed. When looking at history, we use a lot of hindsight. In the case of the Roaring
20 s turning into the Great Depression, we can see in hindsight that there were many extraneous and
careless occurrences in the 20s that spawned the Great Depression whereas during the 20s we didn t
see this. We can now use hindsight to see that these detrimental factors stemmed from the stock
market, the government, and society at the time. At the time, things seemed great but we can see now
that they inflicted a lot of burden later on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
President Warren Harding and President Calvin Coolidge were the Presidents during the roaring 20s
and they favored large businesses and helped those businesses by making tax cuts that encouraged
business expansion. While the rising of these big businesses did help in decreasing unemployment,
they also played a role in the increase of the cost of living. This higher cost of living made the Great
Depression worse. Another lapse of judgement by the government pertained to both the stock market
and the federal banking system. In the 20 s banks were allowed to invest in land and the stock market
with very little government regulations. The banks were using the people s money to invest in unstable
and unpredictable endeavors. When the stock market crashed, the banks had no money to give back to
the people who stored their money in the banks.
Society in America also helped unknowingly cause the Great Depression. In the 1920s manufacturing
and agricultural advancements in technology caused the increase in efficiency in production. This
seemed to be a great thing, however there wasn t enough demand of these products to keep up with the
rapid production because people weren t making enough money. The leftover supply of these goods

Chief Executive Officer Compensation in the Financial...
The issue of chief executive officer compensation is the subject of dilemma in the United States. This
dilemma often triggers questions as to who decides what compensation is rewarded, as well as how
compensation is rewarded. The government strongly resents the current pay ration between CEOs and
the average salary of American citizens. Since the financial crisis, people have shown their displeasure
with the hefty compensation chief executive officers receives. But when stunning management
failures and unprecedented destruction of shareholder value are brought into the light, it becomes
increasingly difficult to defend current executive remuneration policies with these economic
underpinnings. For example, the Occupy Wall Street movement began in 2011 in protest of the
increasing disparity of wealth among other reasons lying within corporate America. The peak of CEO
compensation came in 2001, and it is still difficult to argue whether the financial crisis of 2008 or the
change in compensation strategy has slightly stagnated the exponential growth the started in the mid
1970 s. The sentiment around the problem is whether the large banks CEO compensation are fair to
their employees, shareholders, and the community as a whole. There is a plethora of steps to
comprehend in developing how the CEO compensation debate came about. The reasons for this
growth rely on bank deregulation. During difficult financial times after the mortgage crisis, arguments

Question 1. Choose an architect or practice whose work is covered by or relevant to this course and
discuss critically one or more of their design projects or drawings or urban proposals as precedent case
studies. Selectively situate this work in relation to their body of work, and against the practices and
concerns of the period. Focus on the architectural qualities of a specific key aspect of the design of the
projects. Selectively consider how they might relate to the historical situation, cultural values,
theoretical concerns and design practices of the time. This may involve a selective analysis of
compositional design practices, material fabrication production and the experiential reception of built
outcomes of the projects.
A lot has happened in architecture since Louis Kahn death in 1974, some of it are really good, some
are dreadful and we have different preferences about which is which. However, Kahn s work look
better than ever on its own terms. Better in its solidity and gravity. He was an architect of beautiful
contradictions and one of the few to create architectural elements out of scale with the human figure.
His buildings are very elegantly designed but are constructed of basic, often crude materials.

In Taoism there are many important factors that make up this religion that many are unaware of it.
Such as History, Teachings, Ethics and Rituals of Taoism and in these are topics we ll be exploring.
The origins of Taoism has become an extremely hard task for scholars to assemble, due to the massive
size in canon. However they have found a way to focus on the beginning of taoism through scriptures.
Through Taoism they have found that taoist have taken to and responded more to, the Tao Te Ching.
The Tao Ching is a book that uses both philosophical Taoism and religious Taoism. This book is

Compare And Contrast The Movie And Maria Full Of Grace
The film, Maria full of grace and the book, Open Veins of Latin America share a plethora of
similarities and differences, however, what these two substances do is substantially support each other.
Although the film is a work of fiction, the movie does an excellent job in supplementing the
information that is offered in the book which will be explained further in the essay. A major difference
between the book and the film is that the film seems to be more personal while the book is more
impersonal.
To begin, the film Maria full of grace, presents a young woman, Maria who lives in a household where
it is seen that her family is struggling financially and that her family essentially relies on her and her
mother for financial income. It could be inferred from the film that the family is struggling because
once Maria quit her job in the factory, her mother and sister whom who has a child are appalled at this
act. As mentioned, prior you get a more personal feel to this film in contrast from the book. This is
shown through her interactions with her family, coworkers/ friends, and boyfriend. This film touch
base on how being struggling financially would lead you to perform jobs that aren t exactly legal.
Once Maria quit her job at the flower factory and her family begged her to go back, she wouldn t
which fundamentally led her to become a mule in transporting pellets into the United States for
money. Maria s life is an example of those who live under this umbrella of poverty.

Participatory Action Research Essay
Understandings of Participatory Action Research
Research is the method of intense enquiry into a particular topic/s. The ethical implications of
conduction of research ventures without properly defined values or ethical process allows for the risk
of breakdown of research structures and possible legal sanctions. This paper will aim to provide a
meaningful, in depth understanding of the research approach Participatory Action Research and its
conducive uses in relation to effective implementation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people.
The National Health and Medical Research Council has currently a released document titled Values
and Ethics: Guidelines for ethical conduct in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research .
This thorough document acts as a guide to research in Indigenous matters and incorporates core
process and justifications to conclude with the best possible research outcomes. The inception of
separate guideline process when conducting research with Indigenous people was put forward ...both
in submissions and in personal representations at public forums... (NHMRC, 2013), by Aboriginal and
Torres Strait communities, researchers and health organizations. Several recommendations have since
followed in reference to the need for review and updated to the relevant research guideline policies.
In the past history of Indigenous life, many challenges were present for the Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander community, however in our

Descriptive Essay About The Pool
Alright, kiddos, Teacher announces, we re here. Before we head into the pool, let s check. What are
the pool rules again?
An assortment of enthusiastic voices cries out, Sunscreen, get a buddy, we have to see you Anything
said beyond is incomprehensible.
That s right, confirms Teacher, you need sunscreen, a swimming buddy, eyes on me, and you MUST, I
repeat, MUST wear your floaties when going to the deep end. That being said, everyone follow me to
the pool.
The short walk to the pool is a blur to Zane. His mind is elsewhere thinking of all the fun things he s
going to do, I m gonna make big splashes and race my friends and go to the deep end and do cool
things and make big splashes. When the pool finally comes into view, it s a paradise. An ocean of
clear, wavy water covers all the eye can see. Zane can see all the way to the bottom, and if not for the
distorting ripples he would believe it to be empty. The pool makes a distinct L shape, branching off to
the side to mark the deeper waters. It is already occupied with people of all ages. Most are lounging
around on rafts or in inner tubes, but some of the younger inhabitants are gleefully splashing and
flailing about. Multicolored balls soar through the air, descending until forced skywards with a
satisfying whack. Just as Zane had imagined, children are in competition, playing water tag, racing
one another, and throwing balls of mass destruction. He finally succumbs to his anticipation and starts

Cyber Attack Assignment
Early in this year, a cyber attack impacted some countries, including the UK. This attack caused
breaches in about 36 per cent of NHS organisations, which interrupted delivery of care by blocking
some technological devices (Morse, 2017). According to the National Audit Office (NAO), due to this
attack, more than 16,000 appointments were cancelled, which increased the cost to arrange these
appointments and seek support to restore data impacted in NHS devices (Morse, 2017). Facing this
kind of technological problem might seriously threaten data security and quality unless healthcare
organisations implement more monitoring and intensified support. Technical Requirements

To improve ICD 9 CM codes, Glance et al. recommend that other states in the US should follow the
successful experience of California and New York. These states coded the condition present at
admission (CPAA) to modify disease diagnosis once the patient was admitted to hospital, with the date
stamped (2006). A study Sundararajan et al. aimed to evaluate diagnosis timing indicators in the
International Classification of Diseases (ICD), developed by the World Health Organization and used
in Canada, the US and Australia (2015). This study indicated an improvement in diagnosis due to use
of coding, which promoted data accuracy and quality. Based on these successful experiences, the
WHO has encouraged these countries to develop standard coding guideline to help use these codes
effectively (Sundararajan et al., 2015). In addition, in the UK, the NHS has had success using OPCS 4
and ICD 10 standards across UK hospitals to evaluate the care provided based on epidemiological
analysis data by coding them (NHS Digital, 2017). ICD 10 is used to categorize diseases, while OPCS
4 is used during surgical procedures (NHS Digital, 2017). These standards collect data from medical
records, code the data and group them into lists to get rid of duplicates so the data will be functional to
use them in the future. According to NHS Digital, these standards help hospitals use statistical
epidemiological analysis to set their plans and budgets, which might

The R Assessment Is An Early Childhood Environment Rating...
The ECERS R assessment is an early childhood environment rating scale that assesses group
programs serving children ages two through five. The assessment incorporates seven categories that
focus on the various interactions that take place within a classroom setting. They include interactions
with environment, teachers, parents, and other children. The ECERS R emphasizes the inclusion of
children with disabilities and cultural diversity. For this assessment, the chosen facility is the
Cornerstone Center for Early Learning. This facility serves children six weeks to five years old, but in
this assessment, the designated classroom only included children ages three to five. The funding for
this facility includes a mixture of parent contribution and three government programs that include
USDA, Head Start, and State Tuition Assistance. Cornerstone is a private facility due to its tuition
costs and parent contribution. The teaching philosophy of this facility is to enhance the potential of
each child through a higher level of care. After completing the assessment, a predetermined formula
calculated a final score for each subunit. The category on Space and Furnishings received a final score
of 6.13, due to the facilities well organized and usable spaces. This category received high marks on
most of the subunits. One strength within this section includes the warm and inviting classroom, along
with its designated spaces. The classroom included areas for reading, blocks, art,

Social Stereotypes in America Essay
Introduction
Imagine that you are of Arab decent you being screened more thoroughly than others at the airport.
The only way the airport staff can identify that you are of Arab decent is based on your family name,
Najjar. The airport staff constantly takes extra measures to confirm that you are not a terrorist.
Stereotypes have existed in American culture for centuries. Early in American history stereotypes of
Negroes and Mexicans predominately associate them with lower class attributes (Campbell, 1967).
Major social events can have an effect on how various groups of people are viewed. For example, the
terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, where several individuals of Arab decent brutally murdered
hundreds of unsuspecting American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Racism and the Workplace
Racism can be thought of as a superiority complex, in that some ethnicities are better or more superior
to others (Bhopal, 2004). This complex is used to construct and validate actions that will build and
maintain many constructs of discrimination and disproportion. Racial inequality and discrimination is
ingrained in racism, it is a direct echo suffered by the minority individuals in a prejudiced society.
One key factor when exploring how stereotyped individuals that have been victims of discrimination
counter act to stressors such as ethnic slurs, supremacy and other acts of environmental racism is
whether or not they are affected contrarily. The Journal of Critical Public Health provides a more
abstracted prospective of looking at individuals affected by racism. There are two distinct categories
subjective discrimination and objective discrimination. A person directly experiencing racism is said
to be subjective, contrarily those who observe the acts are said to be objective (Paradies, 2006). This

Wrongful Conviction Essay
Nothing is flawless, and this is especially true of governments, which are simply collections of flawed
individuals attempting to serve, or in some cases control, a larger group of flawed individuals. Despite
this, a large portion of the population accepts the government s procedures and regulations without a
second thought. Dr. Brian Farrell s lecture titled Wrongful Convictions, an article about false
confessions by Douglas Starr titled The Interview, and even the events surrounding Prohibition are
just some examples of a government that may provide order, but is far from perfect. RULES AND
PROCEDURES ARE NOT ALWAYS BENEFICIAL AND CAN EVEN LEAD TO UNDESIRABLE
CONSEQUENCES. The government of the United States in particular is bound to make mistakes as
regular citizens have a large amount of influence in policy making through elections, yet ... Show

While many supported the idea of Prohibition, it caused a great deal of consequences that can still be
seen to this day. In 1920 could anyone have believed that the Eighteenth Amendment, ostensibly
addressing the single subject of intoxicating beverages, would set off an avalanche of change in areas
as diverse as international trade, speedboat design, tourism practices, soft drink marketing, and the
English language itself? Or that it would provoke the establishment of the first nationwide criminal
syndicate, the idea of home dinner parties, the deep engagement of women in political issues other
than suffrage, and the creation of Las Vegas (Okrent 3)? While Prohibition had many positive
consequences, the negative consequences were overlooked and many suffered because of the
government s decision to restrict the consumption of alcohol. There is no doubt that Prohibition, a
product of an imperfect government, was far from perfect and led to undesired

  • 3. The Glass Ceiling In The Workplace Over the past few years, the percentage of women in lower managerial positions has increased tremendously while the number of women who reach the top is still just a small proportion. They are held back by an invisible barrier that is named the glass ceiling (Dreher, 2003). The glass ceiling is a concept that is repeatedly used in studies, analyzing inequalities between men and women in the workplace (Baxter Wright, 2000). The phenomenon glass ceiling has been used universally in the media as well as in official government reports (US Department of Labor, 1991; A fact finding report of the Federal glass ceiling commission, 1995) and academic publications. The federal Glass Ceiling Commission was founded in 1991 with its mandate to identify certain barriers that have blocked the promotion of minorities and women. They refer to the glass ceiling as an Unseen, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nowadays people refer to the glass ceiling when describing a situation where women and minorities are held back from advancing to a certain level (Jackson, 2001). Although women can get access to the first levels of managerial hierarchies, at some point they will hit an invisible barrier that blocks them of any further upward movement. As one of the early writers, who used the metaphor, Hymowitz and Schellhardt (1986) describes the glass ceiling as an obstacle in organizational hierarchies that is situated just below the top management level (Dreher, 2003). The definition of the concept glass ceiling has changed over time. Taken literally, the metaphor of the glass ceiling implies the existence of an impermeable barrier that blocks the vertical mobility, below this barrier women and minorities, are able to get hired by male dominated organizations, and can get promoted, above this barrier they are not. (Baxter Wright, 2000). Sometimes they are considered to be promoted to a higher position, but rarely reach that position (Maume, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Still America continues to be the symbol of the land of freedom and of opportunity. Arriving to America, the Chinese immigrants who come from a traditional, structured, old world struggle to find a balance in a modern and dynamic new world. In order to realize the American dream, the first generation of immigrants have to learn the language, acquire education, and assimilate into the dominant culture. They courageously leave the past behind except what they carry in their memory. Thus, immigrants often experience shock and resistance in dealing with the new world culture. This is especially true for the second generation Chinese Americans who resist and are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both Tan and Maxine Hong Kingston recognize the difficulties faced by women in such a regimented society. Kingston in The Woman Warrior tells of the folk sayings that proclaimed the worthlessness of women, such as [t]here s not profit in raising girls. Better to raise geese than girls, or [w]hen fishing for treasures in the flood, be careful not to pull in girls (195,6). According to Anne P. Standley, Kingston tells of her lifelong struggle to fashion an identity on her own terms and to draw sustenance from her Chinese culture while rejecting its sexist values (165). For her part, Tan in Joy Luck Club illustrates the cultural differences between these two conflicting generations by alternating the voices of the mothers with those of the daughters. Four mothers with a painful past in pre 1949 describe their struggles in China against traditional female roles and family domination. By coming to America they are bringing their hope for a better life which they try to instill into their children. At the start of the book, Jing Mei sits in the seat for her deceased mother who had started the mah jong club in 1949 in San Francisco. The Joy Luck aunties inform Jing Mei that she has two half sisters in China. She has to go to China to instill in the sisters the spirit of their mother. King Leopold s Ghost Sparknotes King Leopold s Ghost tells the narrative of the struggles experienced by those in the Congo following the discovery of rubber and the privatized funds of a King Leopold of Belgium. Recounted by Adam Hochschild, a lecturer at the University of California Berkeley s School of Journalism, it gives light to the stomach turning truths of imperialism. King Leopold s Ghost falls to critics in some aspects, as highlighted in a review by Lysle Meyer. Meyer, works for the African Studies and has written a book regarding this specific subject. The novel, which successfully exposes the horror of King Leopold s rubber empire in Congo, lacks sources as well as contains simplistic prose that can seem dull at times. Meyer s review of the novel agrees that the book is well informative; however, Meyer also states that without due sourcing the book falls short of expectations for the average historian. One can easily agree with this point, as there is quite obviously no footnotes. Meyer makes this point stating . . . the publisher has eschewed footnotes, presumably in deference to the average reader s reputed aversion to them. ( Review 2 ). In an attempt to ... • 7. Analysis Of The Book Coriolanus And Titus Andronicus Coriolanus and Titus Andronicus are Roman warrior heroes who both become maniacal revengers when Rome rejects them. Titus sees his revenge carried out, while Coriolanus gives up to his mother before his revenge is achieved. While Titus decisions allow him to experience victory and defeat, Coriolanus decisions cheat him out of the victory of revenge and he experiences only defeat at the hand of his once enemy, Aufidus. Firstly, the Rome s that Coriolanus and Titus come from are very different place in custom and time. For Coriolanus, he comes from a Rome that is still run by the senate, before the time of Caesar. This Rome is less about conquest and more about the Republic. The people are still a minority in the government but because of mob mentality they play an important role in Coriolanus. Unlike Titus, Coriolanus is trying to get elected to the highest position possible under the republic. Titus comes from a Rome after the death of Caesar, but needs to be punctuated by the fact that it is a fictional Rome made by Shakespeare. In this fictional Rome, the people play little to no role and the microcosm is mostly centered on the upper crust of Roman society and the court. These versions of Rome play to the success and failure of both Coriolanus and Titus. In the opening of both plays, the title characters are described as Roman warriors who have retained hero status for their actions in war, defending Rome. As per requirements we had to take a music class, and I knew that I could not sing, so an instrument it was. Most of that year I spent experimenting with wind and string instruments to find out if I belonged in band or orchestra. I was never really interested in any of the wind instrument so I atleast knew I was going to be in orchestra. The year ended with me being skeptical to if I should play an instrument or not. With the next school year approaching fast I had to make my decision. A few days before sixth grade started, Santa Fe hosted a little music assembly for the students and their parents to come and enjoy music and also to provide instruments for the students to try out and possibly buy. I remember walking around a tad bit nervous looking for an instrument and that s when I heard someone start playing the cello. I turned to look and saw a man, Mr. Stanley, who later I found out was my cello teacher, playing the cello. He played so beautifully it inspired me. The warm, rich tone of the cello filled the room and I remember almost everyone stopped what they were doing just to listen to him play. I think mother saw the glint in my eyes when I first listened to the cello and she knew that was my choice. In the 1960 s the civil rights and women s rights were in their embryonic stages. All of these ideas coming together created the illusion of The American Dream. Back then; the American dream was equated with freedom and material prosperity, two concepts that ring true today. The definition of the American dream changes as society in the United States changes, and the connotation and reality of the American Dream is disheartening. Two literary compositions give a realistic outlook on what the American Dream really is. In Death of a Salesman and The American Dream, Arthur Miller and Edward Albee masterfully relay the true nature and ideologies of The American Dream. In theory, the American Dream is the idea that every person residing in the United States of America should live a richer and fuller life, regardless of the class one is born in. It is not a dream about cars, high wages, and a picket fence. The idea, for it to work, is supposed to be that every man and woman in this beautiful country has the ability to gain the highest class in their ability regardless of their previous background. The ability to achieve such high success is based on academic success and hard work. In current times, it seems the American Dream has become a pursuit of material objects. FISA Pros And Cons The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) was first enacted in 1978, and later amended, including in 1994, by the Patriot Act, and by 2008 it became the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments. In 1972, the Supreme Court chose the case of United States v. United States District Court, otherwise called the Keith case, in which the Court considered the legality of an Attorney General approved warrantless electronic surveillance of a United States citizen blamed for bombing a Central Intelligence Agency building. The Court rejected the government s appeal to acknowledge a foreign intelligence special case to the per se warrant prerequisite, holding that the Fourth Amendment prohibited warrantless surveillance directed at domestic threats to United States national security. The Court directly refused to choose the legality of warrantless surveillances where foreign powers or their agents were included, leaving open the issue of the Executive s power to direct such operational activities at those persons or elements. Monster is about a sixteen year old named Steve Harmon that was accused of felony murder. Harmon has never committed a crime before and the novel is his version of a movie script; the reader only knows what he writes down. Harmon has his own notes throughout the script and he describes everything that is going on while the trial goes on. Evidently, the theme for Monster is that telling the truth will depend on the future. In the view of this theme, there are numerous points in the text that resemble it. He is only a teenager and lying in court can have a large effect on his life. Also in the text, it states Harmon s name and to the right it says nervously in parenthesis. This also shows that he is stressed and having anxiety while on trial. This relates to the theme because if anyone would lie on while on trial, it can jeopardize a free life. The text also states, STEVE spreads his arms to hug O BRIEN, but she stiffens and turns to pick up her papers... when Miss O Brien looked at me, after we had won the case, what did she see that caused her to turn away (Myers 276, 281). The stage directions and Harmon s own notes show that O Brien thought that he was guilty. Even though Harmon was claimed not guilty, it does not mean that he did not commit the crime. The way God and Jesus Christ present this emotion throughout the bible, shows a better understanding of unconditional love to others. Love is one of the characteristics of God and an important part of His nature. Therefore, I will bring forth explanation of how well the word Love is used from translation to translation. My research will be coming out of the New Testament and Old Testament, even though there are many other books I could talk about for the word love. In the New Testament, Almost everyone knows that God so loved the world (John 3:16) and God is love (John 4:8), and when love appears nobody can express it better than Jesus. We mainly hear about love in the beginning of the first Corinthians ( 1 CO 13) at wedding ceremonies. As new translation were coming out over the years, the version NIV used love as sex acts in Genesis to express the word rather than KJV and ESV used love as knowing the feeling and NASB used love as strong relations. In the 1 corinthians, Paul created a message saying, the love of god, the love of jesus christ, and the love that the christian expresses in response to God s saving action in Jesus Christ (samuel E Balentine). As I was looking into the new testament, the chapter called First John stood out to me because majority of the words are love or something describing love. Language is our main means of communication and learning, without it we would not understand each other efficiently enough to communicate our needs and thoughts. It is a very complicated feature of human cognition. Yet children acquire language very naturally and quickly without any formal instruction. Many language experts such as Chomsky (1965) and Pinker (2000) believe this suggests that there is some innate predisposal to acquire language, by this it is meant a genetic mechanism that holds what he calls the universal grammar common to all languages. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Humans who began to learn language would find it easier to survive and then pass on their language to their children and so on. Therefore Darwin s theory does not support Chomsky s claim of humans having an innate predisposal to acquire languages as he believed it was something that has evolved and then been developed over time, not something that has always been present in our genetics. Most animals communicate with one another non verbally, for example some bee species have very specific and evolved ways of communicating with each other about the location and quality of food (Winston, 1987, p. 25) or the emperor penguin which uses an intricate set of calls that are very vital for individual recognition between parents, offspring, and mates, demonstrating a very wide range of individual calls from all the penguins (Williams 1995, p. 68). As all these forms of communication appear to be very natural to the species they are relevant to, it suggests they are easily developed and learnt through the social context the being is in. Perhaps this means that these forms of communication are innately predisposed to the specific species, which would surely mean language to be innately governed within humans as it s our way of communication. However one cannot really compare the communications of animals to humans as the humans have a much greater mental capacity than that of any other species. Walk at Cornell University conducted the Visual Cliff experiment to investigate depth perception in human and animal species. The visual cliff apparatus allowed them to experimentally adjust the visual, tactical, and other stimuli associated with the simulated cliff while protecting the experimental subjects from injury. The cliff is created by connecting a transparent glass surface, which is supported a foot or more above the floor, to a sheet of patterned material. On one side of the glass, the patterned sheet is placed against the glass, given the glass a solid look. They also peered down the glass and backed away. They didn t simply cross over, they stopped, thought wether this is safe to cross or not, and made the decision to not cross regardless of the hardness of the glass they touched. This is where the developmental theory comes. We learn that infants perception of depth develops faster than their locomotors abilities. Many of the children did supported themselves on the glass as they maneuvered awkwardly on the bored, and some even backed into the glass while looking at their mothers; if the glass weren t there, they would have fallen and hurt themselves. The Social Influences of the Visual Entertainment Media American culture has a bi directional relationship with the visual media, in which expressions in television and film manifest in society but social norms also manifest on the screen. Therefore, visual media in the United States actually has the potential to alter social norms and interactions. The television shows that were popular in the 1950s and early 1960s reflect the conservative family values that were popular at that time in American history. The Brady Bunch, for example, shows a happy go lucky white family, and highlights the suburban American dream. More contemporary shows show how American social values and norms have evolved since the 1950s. In Will and Grace, gay characters feature prominently to reflect the fact that Americans are coming out of the closet and staying out. There are ample examples of how television reflects social norms, while actively working to shape those norms as well. For instance, the 1980s show The Cosby Show was one in which the middle class African American family was portrayed for the first time on television. The production was a deliberate attempt to teach new values that would help eliminate the standard stereotypes of African Americans that do not fit into the white dominant culture. By producing The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby and other entertainers were actively shaping the values and worldviews of Americans. Stress and Perfectionism in Academic Achievement Between Blue Ribbon Schools vs. Non blue Ribbon Schools Erin Altenberger Northern Kentucky University Abstract Stress and Perfectionism in Academic Achievement Between Blue Ribbon Schools vs. Non blue Ribbon Schools Damian, Stoeber, Negru, and Baban (2014), describes perfectionism as endeavoring for flawlessness and setting extremely high standards for oneself. There is not just one type of perfectionism; there are in fact three different categories of perfectionism. The three categories included self oriented, other oriented, and socially prescribed perfectionism. Self oriented perfectionism refers to an individual that sets and seeks high standards of performance for themselves (Chang, 2006). Chang (2006) describes other oriented perfectionism as an individual that assumes that others should be perfect in their actions. Socially prescribed perfectionism refers to an individual that believes that those around them anticipate perfectionism from him or her (Chang, 2006). With what we know about perfectionism and the potential distress it may cause, one can consider that stress could be a component with perfectionism. Choose an architect or practice whose work is covered by or relevant to this course and discuss critically one or more of their design projects or drawings or urban proposals as precedent case studies. Selectively situate this work in relation to their body of work, and against the practices and concerns of the period. Focus on the architectural qualities of a specific key aspect of the design of the projects. Selectively consider how they might relate to the historical situation, cultural values, theoretical concerns and design practices of the time. This may involve a selective analysis of compositional design practices, material fabrication production and the experiential reception of built outcomes of the projects. A lot has happened in architecture since Louis Kahn death in 1974, some of it are really good, some are dreadful and we have different preferences about which is which. However, Kahn s work look better than ever on its own terms. Better in its solidity and gravity. He was an architect of beautiful contradictions and one of the few to create architectural elements out of scale with the human figure. His buildings are very elegantly designed but are constructed of basic, often crude materials. Consisting of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Compare And Contrast The Movie And Maria Full Of Grace The film, Maria full of grace and the book, Open Veins of Latin America share a plethora of similarities and differences, however, what these two substances do is substantially support each other. Although the film is a work of fiction, the movie does an excellent job in supplementing the information that is offered in the book which will be explained further in the essay. A major difference between the book and the film is that the film seems to be more personal while the book is more impersonal. To begin, the film Maria full of grace, presents a young woman, Maria who lives in a household where it is seen that her family is struggling financially and that her family essentially relies on her and her mother for financial income. It could be inferred from the film that the family is struggling because once Maria quit her job in the factory, her mother and sister whom who has a child are appalled at this act. As mentioned, prior you get a more personal feel to this film in contrast from the book. This is shown through her interactions with her family, coworkers/ friends, and boyfriend. This film touch base on how being struggling financially would lead you to perform jobs that aren t exactly legal. Once Maria quit her job at the flower factory and her family begged her to go back, she wouldn t which fundamentally led her to become a mule in transporting pellets into the United States for money. Maria s life is an example of those who live under this umbrella of poverty. As ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Descriptive Essay About The Pool Alright, kiddos, Teacher announces, we re here. Before we head into the pool, let s check. What are the pool rules again? An assortment of enthusiastic voices cries out, Sunscreen, get a buddy, we have to see you Anything said beyond is incomprehensible. That s right, confirms Teacher, you need sunscreen, a swimming buddy, eyes on me, and you MUST, I repeat, MUST wear your floaties when going to the deep end. That being said, everyone follow me to the pool. The short walk to the pool is a blur to Zane. His mind is elsewhere thinking of all the fun things he s going to do, I m gonna make big splashes and race my friends and go to the deep end and do cool things and make big splashes. When the pool finally comes into view, it s a paradise. An ocean of clear, wavy water covers all the eye can see. Zane can see all the way to the bottom, and if not for the distorting ripples he would believe it to be empty. The pool makes a distinct L shape, branching off to the side to mark the deeper waters. It is already occupied with people of all ages. Most are lounging around on rafts or in inner tubes, but some of the younger inhabitants are gleefully splashing and flailing about. Multicolored balls soar through the air, descending until forced skywards with a satisfying whack. Just as Zane had imagined, children are in competition, playing water tag, racing one another, and throwing balls of mass destruction. He finally succumbs to his anticipation and starts toward the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Cyber Attack Assignment Early in this year, a cyber attack impacted some countries, including the UK. This attack caused breaches in about 36 per cent of NHS organisations, which interrupted delivery of care by blocking some technological devices (Morse, 2017). According to the National Audit Office (NAO), due to this attack, more than 16,000 appointments were cancelled, which increased the cost to arrange these appointments and seek support to restore data impacted in NHS devices (Morse, 2017). Facing this kind of technological problem might seriously threaten data security and quality unless healthcare organisations implement more monitoring and intensified support. To improve ICD 9 CM codes, Glance et al. recommend that other states in the US should follow the successful experience of California and New York. These states coded the condition present at admission (CPAA) to modify disease diagnosis once the patient was admitted to hospital, with the date stamped (2006). A study Sundararajan et al. aimed to evaluate diagnosis timing indicators in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), developed by the World Health Organization and used in Canada, the US and Australia (2015). This study indicated an improvement in diagnosis due to use of coding, which promoted data accuracy and quality. Based on these successful experiences, the WHO has encouraged these countries to develop standard coding guideline to help use these codes effectively (Sundararajan et al., 2015). In addition, in the UK, the NHS has had success using OPCS 4 and ICD 10 standards across UK hospitals to evaluate the care provided based on epidemiological analysis data by coding them (NHS Digital, 2017). ICD 10 is used to categorize diseases, while OPCS 4 is used during surgical procedures (NHS Digital, 2017). These standards collect data from medical records, code the data and group them into lists to get rid of duplicates so the data will be functional to use them in the future. According to NHS Digital, these standards help hospitals use statistical epidemiological analysis to set their plans and budgets, which might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. The R Assessment Is An Early Childhood Environment Rating... The ECERS R assessment is an early childhood environment rating scale that assesses group programs serving children ages two through five. The assessment incorporates seven categories that focus on the various interactions that take place within a classroom setting. They include interactions with environment, teachers, parents, and other children. The ECERS R emphasizes the inclusion of children with disabilities and cultural diversity. For this assessment, the chosen facility is the Cornerstone Center for Early Learning. This facility serves children six weeks to five years old, but in this assessment, the designated classroom only included children ages three to five. The funding for this facility includes a mixture of parent contribution and three government programs that include USDA, Head Start, and State Tuition Assistance. Cornerstone is a private facility due to its tuition costs and parent contribution. The teaching philosophy of this facility is to enhance the potential of each child through a higher level of care. After completing the assessment, a predetermined formula calculated a final score for each subunit. The category on Space and Furnishings received a final score of 6.13, due to the facilities well organized and usable spaces. This category received high marks on most of the subunits. One strength within this section includes the warm and inviting classroom, along with its designated spaces. The classroom included areas for reading, blocks, art, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Literature Review and Purpose) Racism and the Workplace Racism can be thought of as a superiority complex, in that some ethnicities are better or more superior to others (Bhopal, 2004). This complex is used to construct and validate actions that will build and maintain many constructs of discrimination and disproportion. Racial inequality and discrimination is ingrained in racism, it is a direct echo suffered by the minority individuals in a prejudiced society. One key factor when exploring how stereotyped individuals that have been victims of discrimination counter act to stressors such as ethnic slurs, supremacy and other acts of environmental racism is whether or not they are affected contrarily. The Journal of Critical Public Health provides a more abstracted prospective of looking at individuals affected by racism. There are two distinct categories subjective discrimination and objective discrimination. A person directly experiencing racism is said to be subjective, contrarily those who observe the acts are said to be objective (Paradies, 2006). This aids us in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Wrongful Conviction Essay Nothing is flawless, and this is especially true of governments, which are simply collections of flawed individuals attempting to serve, or in some cases control, a larger group of flawed individuals. Despite this, a large portion of the population accepts the government s procedures and regulations without a second thought. Dr. Brian Farrell s lecture titled Wrongful Convictions, an article about false confessions by Douglas Starr titled The Interview, and even the events surrounding Prohibition are just some examples of a government that may provide order, but is far from perfect. RULES AND PROCEDURES ARE NOT ALWAYS BENEFICIAL AND CAN EVEN LEAD TO UNDESIRABLE CONSEQUENCES. In 1920 could anyone have believed that the Eighteenth Amendment, ostensibly addressing the single subject of intoxicating beverages, would set off an avalanche of change in areas as diverse as international trade, speedboat design, tourism practices, soft drink marketing, and the English language itself? Or that it would provoke the establishment of the first nationwide criminal syndicate, the idea of home dinner parties, the deep engagement of women in political issues other than suffrage, and the creation of Las Vegas (Okrent 3)? While Prohibition had many positive consequences, the negative consequences were overlooked and many suffered because of the government s decision to restrict the consumption of alcohol.
