Purpose
The previous assignment in this unit examined the range of physiological techniques for
monitoring and diagnosing disease that are available to todays biomedical scientists. This
assignment looks at practically applying those techniques with real life patient. This as-
signment gives learners the opportunity to:

✓ Use a range of physiological techniques learned throughout the course
✓ Analyse results looking at range of normal and abnormal readings
Scenario
Here you will take on the roles of a health team screening Haringey residents for a num-
ber of lifestyle diseases relating to the cardiovascular and respiratory system. You will run
two investigations on a series of patients to search for incidence of disease in the borough.
Task A This provides evidence for P3 M3 and D3
For this task you need to plan and carry out two clinical investigations. One clinical inves-
tigation will focus on cardiovascular disease and the other on disease of the respiratory
system.
Before beginning your investigations you will need to fully assess the factors that you must
take into consideration before starting. What information will you need from your patients,
is there anything that may make your patients unsuitable for this investigation?
When dealing with your patients it is essential that you take all factors into consideration
- where will you do your investigation? You need to make sure it is a safe, private and
confidential environment. You must be polite, clear and reassuring at all times.
Once you have completed your investigation you need to evaluate the methods used to
collect your data and whether or not you managed to achieve everything you set out to.
Did you make sure the patients were at ease and comfortable the whole time? Did you
collect the right information from them before hand? Were your procedures appropriate
and accurate for this investigation?
The plan, investigation and assessment should be written up in a patient file.

Task B This provides evidence for P4, M4 and D4
Once you have completed both of your investigations you will report all findings and con-
clusions in the back of the patient file.
First you must report and explain the findings of each investigation. What results did you
achieve and what is this indicative of? Are there other explanations for your results?
Next you must compare and discuss the significance of the findings of each investigation
for those with normal results. If a patient presents results within the normal boundaries
what does this mean in terms of that patient?
The final section to add to your report is to evaluate your conclusions in terms of reliability
to any possible condition identified. If you have achieved results that suggest an underly-
ing condition, how secure are you in giving the patient this information? Would you have
to run more or better tests?
