Animal and human health can be negatively impacted by mastitis in dairy cows. Mastitis is primarily caused by bacteria such as Streptococci and Staphylococci that enter the udder, but can also be caused by fungi, viruses, or other pathogens. Left untreated, mastitis can lead to loss of milk production, damage to the udder, and in severe cases death of the cow. Proper milking hygiene, regular cleaning of milking equipment, post-milking teat dips, treatment of clinical cases, and culling of chronic cases are important for controlling mastitis.
