Teaching the months of the year to a 1st grade class, Special Ed, 10 boys, 7 girls,
70% white 20% African-American and 10% Hispanic.7 students in the class have
mild to severe ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
A: In my first grade classroom, there are 17 students, all of which having special
needs. Considering this is first grade, the students’ ages will be between 6 and 8. I
will be teaching 10 boys and 7 girls. 70% of the students are Caucasian, 20%
African-American, and 10% Hispanic. 7 of the students in my classroom have
mild/severe ADHD. I will not start my activity until the second month of school so I
am able to get to know my students before I begin a project with them. It is
important for me to get a better look at how they learn, what helps them learn, and
what sets them off. Knowing these qualities will make for a better learning
environment as well as a better teaching environment. Given the chance to get to
know the students before teaching them, I will try multiple different approaches to
teaching to get a better understanding of where they stand as far as grade-wise.
Before I start my project, I will analyze my students to find out at what speed they
learn which I will then use to group them with peers who learn at, or close to, the
same speed as them. This will help the students succeed in the objective of the
project.
S: My students will learn the months of the year through dramatic play, such as
dressing up as you would during certain months, crafts, such as making a picture of
what a tree would look like during certain months, and song. They will also get into
groups. Each group will have their own month and they will make a poster of how
they think their month is described. My students will also have access to YouTube,
where they can view videos of how the seasons change and during what months.
Towards the end of the month, my students will create a robot that will describe
what their month looks like. At the very end, the class will make a podcast and each
student will share a sentence about their month. Starting at the beginning of the
month, my students will recite the months of the year with 100% accuracy by the
end of the month.
S: Method: Students will start each day with a song pertaining to the months of the
year. Doing this each day will not only grab the attention of the students, but with
repetitive song, they will memorize the months to a tune. This will make it easier for
them to remember when reciting because they will be familiar with the names of the
months as well as the order by which they sang each morning. Students will also be
given certain days during the week where they will partake in dramatic play. My
class will go by the seasons as they are in West Virginia (ex. December: cold, June:
hot.) Students will be given a variety of clothing to choose from. From there, they
will decide which clothing and accessories should be used for different months. For
example, there will be coats, scarves, hats, and gloves that will represent the winter
months, as well as, swimming gear, flip flops, and sunglasses that will represent the
summer months. This strategy will give students the opportunity to not only have
fun “dressing up”, but also correlate the attire to the weather during the months.
Students will also be given certain days where they will do crafts to represent the
months of the year. One craft will be where they draw a tree, as it would look in a
certain month. This will give students a glimpse of how different weather affects
nature. Given all three options, each student will have a chance to learn in different
ways.
Media: Students will be shown slides of photos taken during different months. These
images will show things such as rain, sunshine, and snow. While the photos are
being shown, they will be told what month each picture was taken. This will give the
students a real life idea of what months connect with what seasons, making it easier
for them to not only learn the names of the months, but what happens with the
weather during those months. We will use YouTube to view videos on the season
changes during the months.
Materials: I will be sure to have all of the materials needed before starting the
project. This includes clothing, accessories, craft materials, poster, still image slides,
computers, microphones, bot material.
U: I will utilize the media and materials I have by previewing my plan about a week
ahead of time. I will prepare and make sure everything is ready by the time the
project is due to start therefore no postponing in needed. I will give an introduction
to the students, probably a week prior to the activity, so they are slightly prepared
for what the upcoming activity will be. I will most likely mention it the next few days
until the activity begins so they are less likely to forget. I will make sure all activities
are planned and set up to the best of my ability. This will give the students the
opportunity to learn as best as they can.
R: The students will be required to actively participate in each activity so they are
given the full experience as each of their peers. This includes singing, dramatic play,
crafting, slides, computer, podcast, and bot making. Participating in all of these
activities will give each student a better understanding of the material, making it
easier for them to ultimately recite all months with 100% accuracy.
E: Considering this project will be done over the course of one month, I will be
evaluating what is working and what is not at the end of each week. I will make note
of what is working and how well, what could be changed, and what needs to be
taken out of the activities completely. I will also assess the students as a whole at the
end of each week. This will give me a better idea of what students are catching on
and what students are not. With knowing this information, I will then be able to look
thoroughly into what is helping each child individually and what is not helping at all.
When the project is over, I will assess each child individually by having them recite
the months in a year in chronological order. I will then record the results and if the
students met the objective requirements.
