The document discusses various architectural materials throughout history and their uses. It covers stone, which was used in ancient structures like Stonehenge, and its continued use by architects. Bricks are one of the oldest building materials dating back 7,000 years, while concrete allows for sculptural designs and mud is commonly used in parts of Africa and Asia. Bamboo, steel, and other modern materials are also discussed along with specific architectural examples to illustrate the properties and applications of different materials.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

9. Uses of Bricks date back to 7000 BC, which makes them one of the
oldest known building materials. They were discovered in southern
Turkey at the site of an ancient settlement around the city of Jericho.
The first bricks, made in areas with warm
climates, were mud bricks dried in the
sun for hardening.
BRICK
Bricks can be seen today at ruins of
Harappa Buhen and Mohenjo-daro.
10. The greatest breakthrough came with the invention of fired brick in about 3,500 Bc. From this moment
on, bricks could be made without the heat of sun and soon became popular in cooler climates.
The Romans succeeded in introducing
fired bricks. The Herculaneum gate of
Pompeii and the baths of Caracalla in
Rome are examples of Roman brick
structures.
In Victorian London, due to the heavy
fog, bright red bricks were chosen which

16. CONCRETE
Concrete is one of the most commonly used
building materials.
It can yield surprisingly diverse architectural
results
Advantages
• Ability to be cast
• Economical
• Durable
• Fire resistant
• Energy efficient
• On-site fabrication

the material’s sculptural quality. For

results can be awe-inspiring.
