Chlamydia trachomatis is a bacterium that causes trachoma, an eye disease resulting in blindness. It is transmitted through eye-seeking flies or touching eyes/noses with infected hands or surfaces. Symptoms vary by gender and age but include trachoma, infertility in women, and genital/urinary issues in men. Treatment involves tetracycline ointment but the disease may return within a year. Trachoma affects over 500 million people worldwide.
