What Is the Importance of Accountability in the Military...
What is the importance of accountability in the military and in the work place? What is accountability
by definition: (Department Of Defense) The obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation
on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds. The person
having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property, documents, or funds.
Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with
custody, care, and safekeeping. Accountability is very important because it allows for your chain of
command to know where you are at at the moment. Accountability in the workplace is defined as
doing the right thing consistently, day in and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that s why the team member should make sure
that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or her equipment is at all times. The
Army spends a lot of money on equipment and belongings for the soldiers, so the Army expects to
know where its equipment is. No matter what someone is always responsible for equipment in the
Army. Accountability is important because it assures someone that needs will be met. If someone is
accountable, you can trust that they will do what they claimed. Without accountability you would not
be able to put your trust in someone to complete a job for you and other members of the team, or even
show up on time to an important event ,or formation. It is important because it holds each and
everyone accountability for his or her actions.Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept
responsibility or to account for ones actions. Now for the Army, it becomes an obligation more than
willingness while you have to be willing to do it as well. Those that are unable to be accountable are
the ones that jeopardize the combat readiness of any unit. Basically it is the understanding that from
the bottom up. Top down and laterally everyone is going to do and is willing to do the right thing even
when no one else is looking. This is practiced at your home base where everyone is assigned

Ming Tea Vs False Tea Essay
The aesthetic principle created by the Song tea drinkers and their appreciation of the original flavor of
water continued to the Ming Dynasty. Moreover, since loose tea, which tastes bitterer than both Tang
and Song styles of tea, was adopted by scholar officials and people from other classes, the original
flavor/the sweet flavor of water was valued even more during the tea drinking in the late Ming era.
The bitterness of tea was appreciated when other flavors, such as the taste of salty or the flavors of
spices, were removed from the tea due to the popularity of loose tea consumption. Timothy Brook has
mentioned that the scholar officials were the major practitioners of the Song style cake tea drinking in
the early Ming era but later they

Corruption Of Power And Polipulation In Animal Farm, By...
Could you imagine a world where animals could read, write, work, and be able to take care of
themselves without the use of humans. The book Animal Farm by George Orwell explains this whole
new world where animals rule. There s bloodshed, leadership roles, corruption of power, and
manipulation among the animals. Orwell bases these events on the Russian revolution and the Stalinist
era. Napoleon being in relation to Stalin takes complete control over the animal farm and his morals
become corrupt. Squealer one of the many pigs who chose to follow Napoleon s ruling, he serves as
Napoleon s control over the animals by spreading his propaganda throughout animal farm. Through
the propaganda and impressive rhetorical skills of squealer, reality is shaped by words of
manipulation, for better or for worse.
Furthermore to the Russian revolution and Stalinists era, Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union
who would do absolutely anything as far as murder just to stay in control. Stalin had exiled Trotsky
because he always disagreed with him. Similarly Napoleon murdered anyone that had leagued
themselves with Snowball, who he had exiled. On to Vyacheslav Molotov who was a protege of
Stalin, ordered death warrants during the Great Purge, and basically did almost anything Stalin told
him to. Also the Newspaper, Pravda was used by Stalin to get the Russian citizens to join his political
point of view. In the same way, Squealer tries to convince the animals that Life under Napoleon was
better than any other scenario.
Therefore Squealer has the main role of eliminating all oppositions towards Napoleon. For example,
there was a new order in which all the windfalls were to be collected and brought to the pigs. When
Squealer explains that the pigs need the milk and apples for their health and that they are the brains of
the farm and without them Jones would come back. During his speech, Squealer skips back and forth
while saying Surely there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back? This means the
explanation is parallel because he doesn t directly say for certain the truth in the matter, he skips over
specific words. Another example is when Squealer convinces the animals that Boxer was sent to a
hospital when

The Impact Of The Automobile On Society
The automobile has contributed to the society of Americans in many different ways, for example in
1915 the car was invented and provided many new jobs for Americans across the country. The
automobile created jobs like gas stations, auto repair shops, also rubber and steel companies
skyrocketed. Getting jobs became a lot simpler with a car, it was a lot easier to drive a car to work
then walk to work that is 15 miles away. But to the new invention of the car there were down sides,
according to Facts Along the Road there were, 10.9 million auto mobile accidents and almost 36
thousand deaths in 2009. With the auto mobile there are good parts and bad parts. With these actions
happening I feel that the car should remain a part of our lives. Even

She also notes the difference between academia language also known as CALPS: cognitive academic
language proficiency and meaningful language BICS: basic interpersonal communication skills. She
mentions how academic language requires more comprehension of the language than interpersonal
language; which is more informal and contextual. She also illustrates the importance of treating
students for who they are going to become, not the by the fact that they are struggling. A methodology
that is represented throughout the book that illustrates the ways teachers can accommodate their
language learning students is with scaffolding. Scaffolding is a variety of instructional techniques that
are used to assist students to move towards a better understanding of the content and towards
independence when it comes to their learning processes. The teacher provides a form of temporary
support that will assist the students reach increased levels of understanding and skills acquisition that
would not be achievable without aid. All in all, this book will be great for all K 12 teachers and

Analysis Of Aldous Huxley s Brave New World
The identity of a person is often considered to be synonymous with his culture, whether it be to a
distinct nation, race, or way of thought. However, one of the greatest conflicts a person can endure is
one with himself, when he is caught between the innate desire to belong and a sense of self and
difference from the society that he belongs to. In Aldous Huxley s Brave New World, such is the case
with Bernard Marx. Marx faces the immense dilemma of not fitting in in the greatly socialized and
cohesive civilization that he lives in, the Brave New World. Despite how much Bernard disdains this
world, which he identifies as brainwashed and infantile, he cannot help desiring to belong. Huxley
brilliantly contrasts Marx s hatred of his civilization with his eventual plea to remain a part of it after
his exile is sealed in order to highlight the natural desire of man to belong, regardless of how different
he may feel from his surroundings. While most people in Bernard s world belong to one of a handful
of groups, and are mere copies of identical clones, Bernard is entirely unique. Despite belonging to the
highest caste of Alphas in his society, Bernard lacks both the physical and psychological
characteristics of any Alpha. Unlike everyone else in his caste, Bernard is very small, lacks the
appreciation for trivial games like electromagnetic golf, and most seriously, believes there is more to
an individual than pleasure seeking and his role as a component of

The Pen Of Thomas Paine
These are the times that try men s souls. Rarely have there been as powerful and as meaningful words
as these from the pen of Thomas Paine. Paine was one of the many men who experienced the harsh
effects of the war. The war was deadly, more deadly than ever could be expressed through words. The
extremes of the war were felt by all, although some felt the cruelty the war more than others. Men
from many different walks of life and men from different sides of the war all had their souls tried by
this war. Some of the men, who joined the Colonial Army, could not take these trials once the going
got tough. When the war started in the summer of 1776, the Army was doing well with the victory of
Boston behind them, and with the excitement of defending Manhattan in the future, many men joined
the Colonial Army. When the Americans lost New York, started to retreat through New Jersey, and the
weather turned rainy, the number of men in the Colonial Army started to drop significantly. Men were
deserting or waiting until their enlistments were up and then would not re enlist (McCullough 249).
These numbers dropped even farther once the weather turned poor when the rain and snow came
(McCullough 81). This shows precisely what Paine meant by his second statement in The American
Crisis, The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his
country... All the men of the war were suffering, but the men who stuck it out even in the hardest of

Thalamic Stimulation (DBS) Study
Consciousness is the state of being awake and aware of your surroundings. Individuals with epilepsy
have problems with regaining a conscious state of mind after having a seizure. They never know when
a seizure is coming or how long it will take to recover from one, so they have to alter their activities
until they are aware of their surroundings again. Thalamic stimulation or deep brain stimulation (DBS)
is an approach that helps to demonstrate a way to treat neurological disorders such as epilepsy by
surgically implanting small electrodes into parts of the brain and stimulating that area with low to high
electrical impulses. Thalamic stimulation is important to individuals that have epilepsy because it will
help them regain consciousness quicker and return back to their regular routine. The following article
attempted to explain this procedure and its importance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Increasing Faculty Resistance And General Education...
Decreasing Faculty Resistance to General Education Assessment The assessment of general education
courses within the realm of higher education has been a topic of concern and some contention as
external regulatory bodies, accrediting agencies, and donors have become increasingly interested in
seeing quantifiable results from these courses. While universities strive to maintain effective
assessment of their programs, one area that consistently falls by the wayside is the assessment of
general education courses. These courses have been difficult for many universities to effectively
assess due to a multitude of reasons, ranging from the large number of general education courses
offered, to a lack of support and cohesion on the part of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The anticipated outcome of the study will be a decrease in faculty resistance to assessment efforts in
general education courses.
Friedman Stone (2002) highlight an issue on this topic: that colleges and departments are receiving
pressure, both externally, from regulatory and accrediting bodies, and internally, from board members
and upper administration, to expand upon general education assessment efforts (Friedman Stone,
2002). This pressure is falling on the faculty who teach these courses. The faculty, in turn, are resistant
to administrative efforts to dictate what, if any, assessments are being given in their classes. Although
Friedman Stone address this resistance, more research must be done on how to effectively overcome
it. In another article, Banta et Al. (1993), stated that, there is tension between the two principle
purposes of assessment: demonstrating accountability and improving curricula, instruction, and
student services. Governing and accrediting bodies are more concerned with demonstrating
accountability since the stipulations of their investment in a university are measured through
quantifiable program benchmarks. However, the teaching faculty value assessment in terms of
curriculum improvement and as a way to refine instructional methodology. Banta et Al s quote
highlights this disconnect. According to another article published by Kramer (2006) the tension

Perceived Desire Fulfilment Theory Essay
In this essay, I will explain and discuss four main theories of happiness, and defend why the perceived
desire fulfilment theory is my preferred theory of happiness, based on its usefulness for not only the
individual, but also society as a whole, and the fact that it lacks any very glaring faults. Firstly, I will
lay out and extrapolate upon the four popular theories of happiness that this essay will be discussing
hedonism, life satisfaction theory, objective list theory, and finally, my preferred choice; perceived
desire satisfaction theory. After this, I will explain the faults in the first three theories that prevent me
from preferring them, and how perceived desire satisfaction theory circumvents these faults. I will
then discuss various objections concerning the perceived desire fulfilment theory, and why I believe
that these objections are compared to the objections about the other theories presented not that
important. Finally, I will summarise the various ways in which I believe perceived desire fulfilment
theory is more useful and more easily applied than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Happiness and efforts to objectively measure and define it is a topic that, to this day, remains hotly
debated and theorised. Trying to make objective something that is seen as inherently subjective is
difficult, if not impossible, but that fact has yet to deter philosophers putting forward theories for what
constitutes happiness, and how to achieve it. One popular happiness theory is that of hedonism.
Originally stemming from Bentham s utilitarianism theories, hedonism s argument for happiness is
very simple; a happy life is one where the person maximises feelings of pleasure and minimises
feelings of pain, similar to how a utilitarian would want to

audit partner rotation has existed in the United States since the 1970s, when the American Institute of

We find no difference in audit quality between these two samples. Second, we compare the mandatory
rotation sample with itself one year earlier (2003) (the mandatory rotation sample in the prior year).
We find that the audit quality of companies in the mandatory rotation sample under new audit partners
is lower than the audit quality of these same companies one year earlier under old audit partners.
Third, we compare our mandatory rotation sample with companies in years before 2003 whose audit
partners were voluntarily rotated within the same audit firm (the voluntary rotation sample). We again
find no difference in audit quality between these two samples. In sum, we find no support for the
belief that mandatory audit partner rotation enhances audit quality. Our findings are robust to various
sensitivity checks. Next, we examine the effect of mandatory audit partner rotation on investor
perceptions of audit quality, using the earnings response coefficient (ERC) as a proxy for perceived
audit quality (Teoh and Wong 1993; Ghosh and Moon 2005), After controlling for common
determinants of the ERC, we find that the ERC of the mandatory rotation sample is not significantly
different from that of the nonrotation sample or that of the mandatory rotation sample in the prior year,
but is significantly larger than the ERC of the voluntary rotation sample. Overall, we find no
consistent support for the belief that mandatory

The Amphitheater Named After The Flavian Dynasty
The Flavian amphitheater named after the Flavian dynasty emperors who built it or better known as
The Colosseum was a large arena built in 80 C.E. and used for gladiatorial games, mock sea
battles, theater plays, and public executions until its fall to christianity in 404 C.E. It was called the
Colosseum for the great statue of Nero nearby named Colossus. The Colosseum, also known as the
flavian amphitheater was built of travertine stone from the quarries of Albulae. The massive stone
blocks that made up a good portion of the seating, arena, and the massive stone columns that
supported the magnificent structure were moved to Rome on a road constructed specifically for that
purpose. The seating consisted of 45,000 seats, arranged in an oval surrounding the arena. It also had
5,000 standing places for the Roman public. It had 80 arched entrances all around the arena, with 4 of
them being non accessible to the public at the minor and major axises. The entrances at the major axis
provided direct access to the arena. The minor axis entrances provided access to the special seating
boxes for the emperor, empress and other very important people. It measured 527 meters in
circumference and its diameters were 189 and 156 meters, with the height of the structure being 48
meters high. (romancolosseum.org) The seating nearest to the arena was reserved for very important
Romans like the emperor the vestal virgins and priests. The emperor sat in the north end of the arena

SEC lawsuit that has since been resolved.
They also have some mixed online reviews which include some negative feedback with Consumer

E*Trade does have some higher commissions on their stock trade commission s than their

in our opinion makes up for the higher commissions.
E*Trades Pro platform requires 30 stock or options trades per quarter, which could be a problem for
some. Additionally, their Pro system also appears to be lacking when it comes to providing detailed

The photo shown above one of Diane Arbus s most recognizable images Identical Twins taken in 1967

The Ethics Of Embryonic Stem Cells
Problem
The society is not at an agreeable point when it comes to the research of stem cells obtained from
human embryos. The disagreement narrows down to a clash between the two fundamental principles
of ethics: The duty to prevent and alleviate suffering, and the duty to respect the value of human life.
In most situations, both principles can be satisfied. However, in the research of embryonic stem cells,
it might not be inherently possible.
Generally, the clash between the two principles is not created by a violation of the duty to prevent or
alleviate suffering. In fact, it is the prime purpose of the research. On the other hand, depending on the
consideration of the statues of the embryo, the research might violate the duty to respect the value of
life. If the embryo is considered a person, its research would be a violation to human life; if the
embryo is not considered a person, there would be no violation to human life. Such consideration of
the human embryo is the factor responsible for the clash.
What do the statues of the embryo and the ethical principle of life have to do with the research of
embryonic stem cells? Well, in order to perform a research, a new line of stem cells has to be
developed. When the cells are extracted from the blastocyst, the embryo is destroyed since it cannot
persist without its inner cells. If the embryo is considered a person, we are then killing a person, as
well as violating the ethical principle of respecting the value of life.

Democracy, Demagoguery, And Critical Rhetoric
Julia Vu
Professor Parker
RWS 200

Demagoguery
Throughout history, when it comes to a national crisis, many leaders and politicians tend to advance
towards what the people want to hear. In order to gain their audience s support, most political leaders
and public speakers use the practice of demagoguery to have useful influence held towards their
argument. In Patricia Roberts Miller s article Democracy, Demagoguery, and Critical Rhetoric,
analyzes what demagoguery is and how it affects the audience. Speakers or authoritative figures that
engage with demagoguery use strategies such as scapegoating and polarization in order to establish a
separation between in groups and out groups; in groups tend to form hateful discrimination on out
groups and define them with negative features. An example of demagoguery that Roberts Miller uses
is in Adolf Hitler s speech about how he wanted German people to change their views and beliefs on
the Jewish. Her article however, also consists of several fallacies and may seem somewhat unethical.
Throughout Wayne LaPierre s speech on the Newtown Tragedy in 2012, there is usage of what
Roberts Miller claims to be demagoguery. Wayne LaPierre is the Vice President of the National Rifle
Association (NRA). After the shooting that occurred at Sandy Hook elementary, LaPierre expresses
his sympathy for the families of the loss and he then gathers the attention of parents who may be
uneasy about their children s safety at school. Throughout

Determinism And The Part It Plays With Free Will
Determinism is an idea that states that everything can be explained because it has an adequate reason
for being the way it is rather than a different way, meaning that the world has natural laws and
everything happens for a reason. This is important as many philosophers have argued between the
extent of determinism and the part it plays with free will, taking the claim that if our behavior is
governed by natural causes, we are not morally free. Everything will happen due to reasons that have
built upon themselves and bringing forth an effect, which then brings about more causes. This is
taking the case of hard determinism. This issue is very significant when talking about ethics, as blame
and morality surround free will, and if we do not have free will can we be held responsible for our
actions? Before we blame a person we must decide if they could have refrained from what they did or
if it was inevitable due to causal determinism. I believe that free will and fatalistic/ determinism both
have an effect on our human lives and the way we make our choices, contributing to our moral
freedom.
Determinism does not necessarily mean we make no choices; simply put, it is that we make our own
choices and decisions and they are part of the causal process whereby we create further effects in the
world, leading to inevitable causes. Leucippus believed that nothing occurs randomly; everything has
a specific reason. An argument for the claim is that determinism deprives us of the power

The Importance Of Swearing
As kids we are taught that swearing is bad, and not to use swear words. We are told that it is
inappropriate and tells people that you are uneducated or that you don t have an extensive vocabulary
because you chose a swear word instead of a more appropriate word . Children are shielded from just
another word in the dictionary because society has a negative connotation with swear words. As
children grow up, learn and use swear words they are reprimanded for being disrespectful or

After finding this Dr. Jay said as fluency goes up, so does the ability to say swear words, not the other
way around. Since the people that generated the longest lists of words incorporated swear words, the
stigma that says swearing shows you have a poor vocabulary is proven wrong. When someone has
more words to use, more words can be generated. This proves the stigma around swearing is incorrect
because swearing shows that you have an extensive vocabulary instead of the limited vocabulary that
the stigmas says you have.
Swearing helps with both pain and stress tolerance. Richard Stephens, a senior lecturer in psychology
at Keele University, conducted an experiment to test if swearing increases pain tolerance. Stephens
asked subjects to come up with a list of words, including swears, they would yell out if their finger
was hit by a hammer. They were then asked to submerge their hand in ice water and repeat one word,
swear or normal. Subjects who repeated a swear word were able to keep their hand submerged for 50
percent longer than participants who repeated a normal word such as dog, for example. Participants
said repeating a swear word made the pain less intense. Researchers came to the conclusion that
swearing reduced both sensitivity and pain. The study also reported, swearing increases pain tolerance,
increased heart rate and decreased perceived pain compared with not swearing. This demonstrates the
fact that swearing is helpful in everyday life.

The Type Of Parenting Associated With The Tiger Mother
The type of parenting associated with the tiger mother has been a subject of intense controversy for a
very long time. Even though the term itself only became part of our understanding in 2011 thanks to
the very controversial book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, by Amy Chua, there were always
questions of how much discipline is healthy and necessary for a child.
In Chua s book, she contrasts the two sides of parenting styles: what she calls Chinese parenting and
Western parenting. Chinese parenting refers to the strict and intense style of upbringing in which the
parent has (or tries to exert) complete control over their child. The parent is wholeheartedly focused
on honing their child s skills in school, music, maybe a sport, or ... Show more content on

Western parents argue that children should be allowed to make mistakes and become better people by
learning from those errors. Thus, they say that the tiger mother doesn t love their child because it s
much harder to watch your child make mistakes in the hopes that they will learn from them than it is
to simply reprimand them (and correct and intervene, even before mistakes are made or it s too late to
be good at anything).
When Chua s book came out, the media received it with horror. Chua was called a horrible monster ,
the worst mom in the world , and many other unflattering names.. Chua shocked much of America
with her seemingly brutal parenting: many people were flabbergasted by the idea that a parent wouldn
t let their child attend a sleepover, or make them practice 4 hours of violin a day, or threaten to burn
their dolls if they didn t listen. The tiger mother had exploded onto the scene, and the onlookers were
horrified by the carnage they saw behind her. How could a mother be so tyrannical and abusive? Some
even called for Chua s arrest for child abuse. In her book, she talks about how a survey showed that
Chinese mothers thought that academic success reflected good parenting, whereas Western mothers
thought that stressing academic success is not good for children . This shows that what seemed
ordinary for Chua and Chinese mothers were strange and alien to Western mothers.

In Class, We Discussed Three Different Possibilities Of
In class, we discussed three different possibilities of the meaning of Gwendolyn Brooks s story The
Mother. The first and most probable interpretation of this story is that it is narrated by a mother who
has gone through a miscarriage and is trying to warn other mothers not to get abortions because they
will regret it. This interpretation contains the greatest amount of solid evidence and makes the most
sense. The other two, while less plausible, still have some argument for them. The second theory is
that the story is narrated by a mother who has undergone an abortion and is living through the
heartache of it, and is now trying to convince other mothers to not do this. The third, and least
plausible meaning, is that this is narrated by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It explains that the child was born, physically brought into this world, and yet it didn t live. This what
a stillborn child is. A stillborn falls under the category of a miscarriage; it is essentially a child that has
been born dead. Furthermore, Brooks writes If I poisoned the beginnings of your breaths, / Believe
that even in my deliberateness I was not deliberate, (lines 20 21). This evidence suggests that the
mother is blaming herself for the miscarriage. She may think it was something she did, or something
she didn t do, that caused the loss of her child. In pregnancy, there are things the mother can do that
may cause harm to the fetus, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, or any number of things. Also, if
necessary precautions aren t taken, it may have adverse effects on the child. When a mother goes
through a situation as traumatic as losing their child, it is normal for her to blame herself. Since
Brooks explicitly stated that the narrator was not deliberate, it leads us to believe that it was a
miscarriage because he/she had no intentions of hurting the child. Another example Brooks includes
is, ...I have eased / My dim dears at the breasts they could never suck. (lines 12 13). These lines are
telling us that after the child was born, she may have held it to her chest, but because the child had not
survived, it could not suck. This makes sense because typically after a child is

Rhetorical Analysis Of Attack Of The Zombies By Rodney Clapp
The Life of a Zombie
Rodney Clapp, writer, editor for Wipf and Stock Publishers and expert in topics such as theology and
culture, in the article, Attack of the Zombies , argues that many things in life are beginning to
resemble zombies. Clapp assumes that the audience also views zombies as lifeless creatures that go
around spreading their disease. The author s purpose is to persuade the audience to believe that many
things they see today are starting to resemble zombies. The author writes in a challenging tone for
people who question the similarity of zombies to every day life. Clapp supports his argument by
comparing and contrasting, and exemplification.
Clapp assumes that the audience sees zombies as creatures that serve no purpose, but to spread their
contagion. He refers to this in his article when asking the questions of what would you do if a loved
one was turned into a zombie. This scenario is hard to choose between because it makes the audience
feel challenged on what they would do in a situation like that. They aren t sure if they would save
someone they love by helping them or save themselves. This is significant to the argument because he
is trying to prove that we all see zombies are deathly and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

together. He does state the difference between emails and zombies by saying emails can be deleted

because it Clapp is showing the audience how there are similarities to being a zombie and living in a

Good Morning Every one, Welcome to the lecture this morning. I am Isfar Hassan, one of the

to our guest speaker Mr. William Bradford.
As a boy in England, he was caught up in the passion of the Protestant Reformation and when he was
only 12 became a dedicated member of one of the separatist churches that made up the left wing of
Puritanism. Seven years later he joined a group of nonconformists who migrated to Holland (1609) in
search of religious freedom. William Bradford was orphaned at a young age and reared by his

The Importance Of Voting In Congress
Topic Statement The public in America is disillusioned to believe that they run the government as they
are on the top in the hierarchy of democracy. However in practice the incidents suggests that the rich
are ruling the country while the general public is left with no choice but to follow the rules set in favor
of the few. Ironically, there is an indifference towards this attitude in the general public as it is seen as

Alexander The Great s Large Accomplishments
Alexander the Great s large accomplishments in the third century BC changed the landscape of Afro
Eurasia in ancient times, and arguably through modern day. With the growth of his empire came the
spread of Hellenistic culture throughout the lands he conquered. From the Mediterranean to Asia to
the Middle East he helped expand trade routes and most of all the spread of ideas in religion, politics,
and culture. One of the larger aspects of this spread of culture from Alexander was the expansion of
the Greeks language across Afro Eurasia. As he conquered the lands the Greek language quickly
became used by the people he took over, especially in trade systems and political structures that arose.
The newly grown Empire basked in the benefit of a common language, now allowing traders and
merchants to understand each other even through the mixed backgrounds. ADD SOMETHING
ABOUT THE POLITICAL SYSTEM BENIFITTING FROM THE LAUGUAGE. The common
language also introduced people to Greek art, drama, and philosophy. Schools were built all around to
teach the citizens of Greek philosophical ideas such as Epicureanism and Stoicism. The culture and
political environment created by Alexander s Empire made the competition of Greek city states almost
obsolete. This competition being gone helped to create a mentality more focused on being part of a
vast Empire, rather than being the citizen of a certain city state which had till this time been a
predominate part of Greek culture and politics.

An Inspirational Rite Of Passage
In the prime age of sixteen, I felt an inspirational rite of passage. My endurance through Drivers Ed
guaranteed me my license which I wanted desperately. Furthermore, my father had permitted me to
drive his white 2002 Dodge Ram truck; and after eleven years of its existence, its appearance was still
flawless and shattered anything in its way. While driving it, I felt invincible, so invincible I could
jump over any hurtle, obstacle, you name it. I intentionally found reasons to drive it like: going to the
store, the bank, visiting family members, and of course hanging out with my friends. In the early
spring of 2013, I was returning home from eating lunch with my hilarious friend, Wade, at Rupes, the
best burger joint in town. My foot all the way on the gas petal, my left hand out the window, and my
eyes on the road was my last good memory before it happened.
At the speed of 45 between the intersecting of Rich Lane and University Street, my eyes were flashed
by the bursting sunlight from my rearview mirror. My depth perception was rattled by my tainted
eyes, and I could not readjust them back in order before blinking. After a brief moment, I finally
attuned my eyes and I gathered that I drifted closer to the right side of the road. Likewise out of the
corner of my right eye, I notice a strange object fifteen feet headed to the right of the truck. I focused

Amygdala Case Study
Hi Nancy,
I really enjoyed your take on this week s discussion post and how you approached it primarily from
the emotional and biological perspective. As you mentioned, any damage to amygdala can cause a
variety of symptoms, but primarily, the individual will experience an impaired ability to practice
and/or identify both fear and negative emotions. Individuals with traumatic brain injuries involving
the amygdala react differently to various stimuli, mainly due the numerous factors involved in the way
that the amygdala responds based on both the location and the level of brain damage sustained. In
some, conditions like Kluver Bucy Syndrome can appear, where the individual has trouble
understanding visual information such as mood or facial expressions ... Show more content on

For instance, in one study where the brain functioning of 41 murderers were evaluated, researchers
found that the amygdala had weaker activity in the left hemisphere of their brain than they did on their
right. In other words, poor functioning in some areas indicates an inability to learn from experience, as
well as an emotional load that outweighs the ability of the left hemisphere to regulate it (Ramsland,
K.M., 2005, p. 70). Damage to this area of the brain can obviously create behavioral manifestations as
well, including anger, rage, and inability to react properly to the surrounding environment. Also, in
other research noted by Berry Dee (2007), the limbic system can either reward or punish the brain and
if areas of the limbic system are damaged, such as the amygdala itself, and these individuals can also
exhibit indiscriminate sexual behaviors. I think the biggest piece of information I gained from this
week topic is that a variety of responses can come from injury to the amygdala, and given its ability to
disrupt recognition of certain emotional behaviors, there is certainly a concern that individuals can
either be a danger to themselves (by not being able to detect danger or emotions of others in their
environment) or by being a danger to others (as is the case with the findings associated with amygdala
dysfunctions in serial

Theorising Identity and The Search for The Self among the sub continental Diaspora in Britain
Identity has always been a problematic area of interrogation epistemologically, existentially and
politically and it continues to propel our thought. Etymologically, the term is derived from Latin word
Idem meaning same (Oxford Online Dictionary) which means specific quality or condition of being a

The concept of Identity has been defined and studied in different fields of studies ranging from
Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology and Cultural Studies.
Recent trends in Psychology on Identity Theory: In the recent past identity is seen as a self narrative
which is held as the base for the construct of a person s identity. The behaviour in salience to the
social setting is the base of identity formation. The Identity Theory (Stryker 1968, 1980, 1989; Stryker
and Serpe 1982, Mc Calls and Simmons 1978, R.H. Turner 1978) explains social behaviour in terms
of the reciprocal relationship between the self and the society . The term is used to define the links
between a multifaceted notion of the self and wider social structure. (Burke 1980; Mc Call and
Simmons 1978; R.H. Turner 1978). It is an extension of the symbolic interactionist theory postulated
by Mead (1934) and Blumer (1969) that society influences social behaviour through its affects on the
self (Micheal A Hogg, et al.). However, the Identity theory rejects the symbolic interactionist theory as
relatively undifferentiated, co operative whole (Stryker 1980, 1987; Stryker and Serpe 1982) and
argues that society is complexly differentiated, but nevertheless organized (Stryker and Serpe
1982:206) and thus predicated the idea of the

Ideal happiness within a society varies greatly depending on the time period and trends that are found

current trends include newly advanced scientific research that Aldous Huxley heavily used throughout
the novel; Huxley is a humanist horrified by the theories and accomplishments of extremists of his

There is a good chance that we are all guilty of overworking. We often neglect our families, our diets,
our stress level, and most of all, our sanity. We are so tired that we do not have the energy to keep up
with our daily duties. Our laundry and dishes pile up, and we can t find that small amount of time to
take our kids to the park. We lost track of what a real vacation felt like, because if for some small
reason we actually took days off work, we spend them catching up on the areas we have fallen behind
in. The question is why? Why do we choose to over do ourselves for work? It s simple, we all want to
feel and show that we are

Essay on Vietnam
Weapons of the Vietnam War
In late 1961, America took physical force in the Vietnam War. War is a complex series of political
events that leads to physical involvement in the form of armed combat. Technology is a major
deciding factor in war, along with the battle tactics used, terrain, experience and professionalism of the
opposing forces. By 1961 both the United States and Vietnam had developed a broad array of guns
and weapons to fight off one another. Coupled with battle tactics this provides a deadly and extremely
hostile environment. In the beginning of the war the weapon of choice for the support troops was the
M1 Carbine. The carbine was half the weight and held a less powerful cartridge than its brother, the
M1 Garand. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The M 16 is infamous for its accuracy on the battlefield especially at longer ranges. Both assault rifles
share the same 5.56mm projectiles, which provides significant stopping power. The M 203 grenade
launcher was a muzzle loaded grenade that fit under the barrel of assault rifles such as the M 16. The
40mm grenade was used to provide additional fire support in a gunfight. The high explosive had a
range of 400m and a blast radius of 5m. Before the M 203, infantry used a weapon called the M 79
grenade launcher. Which largely resembled a sawn off shotgun. The M 79 was designed to take up the
gap between maximum hand grenade distance, and minimum mortar fire distance. It could fire an
array of projectiles which included darts, buck shots, smoke, gas and flares. The M 79 was ideal in
Vietnam terrain. Although the M 16 was very easy to use in the field, some of the U.S. Armies Special
Forces used a gun very similar to the M 16. The XM 177E2 or more commonly the colt commando or
the CAR 15, had telescoping stock for easy handling and could be used more like an SMG instead of
an assault rifle which made the CAR 15 a great choice for combat situations where fighting would be
extremely close. Although it was popular with Special Forces the CAR 15 saw very limited use with
normal battalion units. Infantry used the M 67 recoilless rifle to destroy bunkers. It was a breach
loaded single shot rifle (much like a bazooka and other

Analysis Of Harry Potter And The Philosopher s Stone By...
Feminism is misunderstood by many people; being a female and being brave or knowledgable does
not automatically make one a feminist. Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone
by J.K. Rowling is a prime example of this statement. Although Hermione is very smart and brave,
Rowling still portrays her as a typical girl throughout the book. It is shown that Hermione is overly
emotional at times, and although she is able, it seems that she cannot do things on her own without the
help of Harry and Ron. Hermione is every teacher s dream student. She listens in class, raises her hand
whenever she has an answer, and does her homework every day. She does not use her bravery and
knowledge for her own use, but to help Harry conquer his destiny. However, Hermione seems
perfectly content with her subordinate partnership with Ron and Harry (Heilman 145) Hermione is
known to be a know it all even though she really does seem to know it all. Regardless of her behaviour
and attitude, she is still a heroic and brave person, hence why she was sorted into Gryffindor but she is
not a feminist figure just because of this. Most people have trouble applying things they learn in class
to real life situations because either they were not listening or because they do not believe it will be
useful. Hermione listens in class and reads up on all of the things she should know. Because of her
knowledge in the magic they learn in class, she is the one to know what to do when Harry, Ron,

Essay On Circumcision
wikihow.com wikihow.com Circumcision is something that we consider very normal in our American
culture. Although we may consider ourselves familiar with the concept of this practice, there s still a
lot we don t know about it, and quite a bit of misinformation on the topic. You would be surprised at
how wrong some of the information you assume to be true actually is. Here are some of the most
common misconceptions about it. Number Eight: Circumcision Protects Against Medical Issues There
are NO proven medical benefits to circumcision, although many people believe there are. The
procedure is purely cosmetic. Number Seven: Having an Intact Male Baby Means More Cleaning This
is another myth. When a baby boy is born and is not circumsized, ... Show more content on

The head of the baby s penis is left raw and bloody and is a very painful and traumatic experience.
Number Three: The Medical Industry Doesn t Benefit from Circumcision A lot of people don t realize
that this is an extremely profitable industry, making $400 billion every year, which explains why it
still happens even without proven benefits to the child. Doctors sell the foreskins to medical research
agencies and they are quite expensive. Number Two: Uncircumcised Babies Might Have to Get the
Procedure Later This is a rumor that s passed around from person to person and has no basis in reality
whatsoever. A few men may choose to have the procedure done later in life for cosmetic reasons, but
the case of a boy needing it done for medical reasons is extremely rare and would only happen in
cases of frost bite, gangrene, or other conditions highly unlikely to reach the foreskin. Number One:
Male Circumcision is not as Bad as Female This is false. Male circumcision is equally damaging as
female genital mutilation, which many people find horrific. We hope that this article was informative
and helped teach you something. Thanks for

Benefits Of A Non Corporate Taxpayer
Expenses attributable to profit seeking farm activities are deductible as either business expenses under
IRC § 162 or production of income expenses under Section § 212. Under IRC § 162, ordinary and
necessary expenses paid or incurred in connection with a trade or business are allowable as business
expenses. Under IRC § 212, ordinary and necessary expenses paid or incurred in connection with the
production of income, or the management, conservation or maintenance of property held for the
production of income are allowable business expenses. Farm expenses that satisfy the requirements
under IRC § 162 or 212 are allowable without regard to the amount of income derived from farming
activity, subject to the risk rules, the passive activity loss rules and any other applicable limitations. If
a non corporate taxpayer engages in an activity without a profit motive, the activity is considered a
hobby subject to the hobby loss rules.
The hobby loss rules under IRC § 183 limit the deductibility of certain items with respect to an
activity that is not engaged in for profit. The history of IRC § 183 indicates that one of the primary
motivating factors behind its passage was Congress desire to create an objective standard to determine
whether a taxpayer was carrying on a business for the purpose of realizing a profit or was instead
merely attempting to create and utilize losses to offset other income (Nickerson vs Comm, 1983).
Congress recognized that wealthy individuals have invested

Atticus Pawn In To Kill A Mockingbird
When saying Atticus is like pawn in a game, it means he isn t the one who s playing the game; it s the
judge and jury who decides his fate. The author of this book, To kill a mockingbird, is Harper Lee.
Atticus is described as a pawn because in a game of chess the pawn is most likely go down and doesn
t really have a chance of winning. If it does win, the reward is reviving one of your pieces that have
been knocked out. In this case, it s Tom Robinson s freedom. Atticus knows he doesn t have a chance
of winning; but with what he can do, he tries to bring up the idea of ending discrimination. Atticus is
like a pawn in a game which he had no control over. Atticus uses all his power in trying to free Tom
Robinson.
Ever since Atticus got Tom Robinson s case Scout has been teased by people at school and called
Nigger lover . Scout doesn t know what a nigger lover is so she asks Atticus.
Scout, said Atticus, nigger lover is just one of those terms that don t mean anything like snot nose. It s
hard to explain ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody s favoring Negroes over and
above themselves. It s slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common,
ugly term to label somebody.

What is accountability by definition: (Department Of Defense) The obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds. The person having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property, documents, or funds. Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with custody, care, and safekeeping. Accountability is very important because it allows for your chain of command to know where you are at at the moment. Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that s why the team member should make sure that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or her equipment is at all times. The Army spends a lot of money on equipment and belongings for the soldiers, so the Army expects to know where its equipment is. No matter what someone is always responsible for equipment in the Army. Accountability is important because it assures someone that needs will be met. If someone is accountable, you can trust that they will do what they claimed. Without accountability you would not be able to put your trust in someone to complete a job for you and other members of the team, or even show up on time to an important event ,or formation. It is important because it holds each and everyone accountability for his or her actions.Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for ones actions. Now for the Army, it becomes an obligation more than willingness while you have to be willing to do it as well. Those that are unable to be accountable are the ones that jeopardize the combat readiness of any unit. Basically it is the understanding that from the bottom up. Moreover, since loose tea, which tastes bitterer than both Tang and Song styles of tea, was adopted by scholar officials and people from other classes, the original flavor/the sweet flavor of water was valued even more during the tea drinking in the late Ming era. The bitterness of tea was appreciated when other flavors, such as the taste of salty or the flavors of spices, were removed from the tea due to the popularity of loose tea consumption. • 4. Corruption Of Power And Polipulation In Animal Farm, By... Could you imagine a world where animals could read, write, work, and be able to take care of themselves without the use of humans. The book Animal Farm by George Orwell explains this whole new world where animals rule. There s bloodshed, leadership roles, corruption of power, and manipulation among the animals. Orwell bases these events on the Russian revolution and the Stalinist era. Napoleon being in relation to Stalin takes complete control over the animal farm and his morals become corrupt. Squealer one of the many pigs who chose to follow Napoleon s ruling, he serves as Napoleon s control over the animals by spreading his propaganda throughout animal farm. Through the propaganda and impressive rhetorical skills of squealer, reality is shaped by words of manipulation, for better or for worse. Furthermore to the Russian revolution and Stalinists era, Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union who would do absolutely anything as far as murder just to stay in control. Stalin had exiled Trotsky because he always disagreed with him. Similarly Napoleon murdered anyone that had leagued themselves with Snowball, who he had exiled. On to Vyacheslav Molotov who was a protege of Stalin, ordered death warrants during the Great Purge, and basically did almost anything Stalin told him to. Also the Newspaper, Pravda was used by Stalin to get the Russian citizens to join his political point of view. In the same way, Squealer tries to convince the animals that Life under Napoleon was better than any other scenario. Therefore Squealer has the main role of eliminating all oppositions towards Napoleon. For example, there was a new order in which all the windfalls were to be collected and brought to the pigs. When Squealer explains that the pigs need the milk and apples for their health and that they are the brains of the farm and without them Jones would come back. During his speech, Squealer skips back and forth while saying Surely there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back? This means the explanation is parallel because he doesn t directly say for certain the truth in the matter, he skips over specific words. Another example is when Squealer convinces the animals that Boxer was sent to a hospital when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Impact Of The Automobile On Society The automobile has contributed to the society of Americans in many different ways, for example in 1915 the car was invented and provided many new jobs for Americans across the country. The automobile created jobs like gas stations, auto repair shops, also rubber and steel companies skyrocketed. • 7. Analysis Of Aldous Huxley s Brave New World The identity of a person is often considered to be synonymous with his culture, whether it be to a distinct nation, race, or way of thought. However, one of the greatest conflicts a person can endure is one with himself, when he is caught between the innate desire to belong and a sense of self and difference from the society that he belongs to. In Aldous Huxley s Brave New World, such is the case with Bernard Marx. Marx faces the immense dilemma of not fitting in in the greatly socialized and cohesive civilization that he lives in, the Brave New World. Despite how much Bernard disdains this world, which he identifies as brainwashed and infantile, he cannot help desiring to belong. Huxley brilliantly contrasts Marx s hatred of his civilization with his eventual plea to remain a part of it after his exile is sealed in order to highlight the natural desire of man to belong, regardless of how different he may feel from his surroundings. While most people in Bernard s world belong to one of a handful of groups, and are mere copies of identical clones, Bernard is entirely unique. Despite belonging to the highest caste of Alphas in his society, Bernard lacks both the physical and psychological characteristics of any Alpha. Unlike everyone else in his caste, Bernard is very small, lacks the appreciation for trivial games like electromagnetic golf, and most seriously, believes there is more to an individual than pleasure seeking and his role as a component of ... Paine was one of the many men who experienced the harsh effects of the war. The war was deadly, more deadly than ever could be expressed through words. The extremes of the war were felt by all, although some felt the cruelty the war more than others. Men from many different walks of life and men from different sides of the war all had their souls tried by this war. Some of the men, who joined the Colonial Army, could not take these trials once the going got tough. When the war started in the summer of 1776, the Army was doing well with the victory of Boston behind them, and with the excitement of defending Manhattan in the future, many men joined the Colonial Army. When the Americans lost New York, started to retreat through New Jersey, and the weather turned rainy, the number of men in the Colonial Army started to drop significantly. Men were deserting or waiting until their enlistments were up and then would not re enlist (McCullough 249). These numbers dropped even farther once the weather turned poor when the rain and snow came (McCullough 81). This shows precisely what Paine meant by his second statement in The American Crisis, The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country... They never know when a seizure is coming or how long it will take to recover from one, so they have to alter their activities until they are aware of their surroundings again. Thalamic stimulation or deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an approach that helps to demonstrate a way to treat neurological disorders such as epilepsy by surgically implanting small electrodes into parts of the brain and stimulating that area with low to high electrical impulses. Decreasing Faculty Resistance to General Education Assessment The assessment of general education courses within the realm of higher education has been a topic of concern and some contention as external regulatory bodies, accrediting agencies, and donors have become increasingly interested in seeing quantifiable results from these courses. While universities strive to maintain effective assessment of their programs, one area that consistently falls by the wayside is the assessment of general education courses. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The anticipated outcome of the study will be a decrease in faculty resistance to assessment efforts in general education courses. Friedman Stone (2002) highlight an issue on this topic: that colleges and departments are receiving pressure, both externally, from regulatory and accrediting bodies, and internally, from board members and upper administration, to expand upon general education assessment efforts (Friedman Stone, 2002). This pressure is falling on the faculty who teach these courses. The faculty, in turn, are resistant to administrative efforts to dictate what, if any, assessments are being given in their classes. Although Friedman Stone address this resistance, more research must be done on how to effectively overcome it. In another article, Banta et Al. (1993), stated that, there is tension between the two principle purposes of assessment: demonstrating accountability and improving curricula, instruction, and student services. Governing and accrediting bodies are more concerned with demonstrating accountability since the stipulations of their investment in a university are measured through quantifiable program benchmarks. However, the teaching faculty value assessment in terms of curriculum improvement and as a way to refine instructional methodology. Banta et Al s quote highlights this disconnect. • 19. The Ethics Of Embryonic Stem Cells Problem The society is not at an agreeable point when it comes to the research of stem cells obtained from human embryos. The disagreement narrows down to a clash between the two fundamental principles of ethics: The duty to prevent and alleviate suffering, and the duty to respect the value of human life. In most situations, both principles can be satisfied. However, in the research of embryonic stem cells, it might not be inherently possible. Generally, the clash between the two principles is not created by a violation of the duty to prevent or alleviate suffering. In fact, it is the prime purpose of the research. On the other hand, depending on the consideration of the statues of the embryo, the research might violate the duty to respect the value of life. If the embryo is considered a person, its research would be a violation to human life; if the embryo is not considered a person, there would be no violation to human life. Such consideration of the human embryo is the factor responsible for the clash. What do the statues of the embryo and the ethical principle of life have to do with the research of embryonic stem cells? Well, in order to perform a research, a new line of stem cells has to be developed. When the cells are extracted from the blastocyst, the embryo is destroyed since it cannot persist without its inner cells. If the embryo is considered a person, we are then killing a person, as well as violating the ethical principle of respecting the value of life. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In order to gain their audience s support, most political leaders and public speakers use the practice of demagoguery to have useful influence held towards their argument. In Patricia Roberts Miller s article Democracy, Demagoguery, and Critical Rhetoric, analyzes what demagoguery is and how it affects the audience. Speakers or authoritative figures that engage with demagoguery use strategies such as scapegoating and polarization in order to establish a separation between in groups and out groups; in groups tend to form hateful discrimination on out groups and define them with negative features. An example of demagoguery that Roberts Miller uses is in Adolf Hitler s speech about how he wanted German people to change their views and beliefs on the Jewish. Her article however, also consists of several fallacies and may seem somewhat unethical. Throughout Wayne LaPierre s speech on the Newtown Tragedy in 2012, there is usage of what Roberts Miller claims to be demagoguery. • 21. Determinism And The Part It Plays With Free Will Determinism is an idea that states that everything can be explained because it has an adequate reason for being the way it is rather than a different way, meaning that the world has natural laws and everything happens for a reason. This is important as many philosophers have argued between the extent of determinism and the part it plays with free will, taking the claim that if our behavior is governed by natural causes, we are not morally free. Everything will happen due to reasons that have built upon themselves and bringing forth an effect, which then brings about more causes. This is taking the case of hard determinism. This issue is very significant when talking about ethics, as blame and morality surround free will, and if we do not have free will can we be held responsible for our actions? Before we blame a person we must decide if they could have refrained from what they did or if it was inevitable due to causal determinism. I believe that free will and fatalistic/ determinism both have an effect on our human lives and the way we make our choices, contributing to our moral freedom. Determinism does not necessarily mean we make no choices; simply put, it is that we make our own choices and decisions and they are part of the causal process whereby we create further effects in the world, leading to inevitable causes. Leucippus believed that nothing occurs randomly; everything has a specific reason. An argument for the claim is that determinism deprives us of the power ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the people that generated the longest lists of words incorporated swear words, the stigma that says swearing shows you have a poor vocabulary is proven wrong. When someone has more words to use, more words can be generated. This proves the stigma around swearing is incorrect because swearing shows that you have an extensive vocabulary instead of the limited vocabulary that the stigmas says you have. Swearing helps with both pain and stress tolerance. Richard Stephens, a senior lecturer in psychology at Keele University, conducted an experiment to test if swearing increases pain tolerance. Stephens asked subjects to come up with a list of words, including swears, they would yell out if their finger was hit by a hammer. They were then asked to submerge their hand in ice water and repeat one word, swear or normal. Subjects who repeated a swear word were able to keep their hand submerged for 50 percent longer than participants who repeated a normal word such as dog, for example. Participants said repeating a swear word made the pain less intense. Researchers came to the conclusion that swearing reduced both sensitivity and pain. Even though the term itself only became part of our understanding in 2011 thanks to the very controversial book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, by Amy Chua, there were always questions of how much discipline is healthy and necessary for a child. In Chua s book, she contrasts the two sides of parenting styles: what she calls Chinese parenting and Western parenting. When Chua s book came out, the media received it with horror. Chua was called a horrible monster , the worst mom in the world , and many other unflattering names.. Chua shocked much of America with her seemingly brutal parenting: many people were flabbergasted by the idea that a parent wouldn t let their child attend a sleepover, or make them practice 4 hours of violin a day, or threaten to burn their dolls if they didn t listen. The tiger mother had exploded onto the scene, and the onlookers were horrified by the carnage they saw behind her. How could a mother be so tyrannical and abusive? Some even called for Chua s arrest for child abuse. It explains that the child was born, physically brought into this world, and yet it didn t live. This what a stillborn child is. A stillborn falls under the category of a miscarriage; it is essentially a child that has been born dead. Furthermore, Brooks writes If I poisoned the beginnings of your breaths, / Believe that even in my deliberateness I was not deliberate, (lines 20 21). This evidence suggests that the mother is blaming herself for the miscarriage. She may think it was something she did, or something she didn t do, that caused the loss of her child. In pregnancy, there are things the mother can do that may cause harm to the fetus, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, or any number of things. Also, if necessary precautions aren t taken, it may have adverse effects on the child. When a mother goes through a situation as traumatic as losing their child, it is normal for her to blame herself. Since Brooks explicitly stated that the narrator was not deliberate, it leads us to believe that it was a miscarriage because he/she had no intentions of hurting the child. Another example Brooks includes is, ...I have eased / My dim dears at the breasts they could never suck. (lines 12 13). • 32. Alexander The Great s Large Accomplishments Alexander the Great s large accomplishments in the third century BC changed the landscape of Afro Eurasia in ancient times, and arguably through modern day. With the growth of his empire came the spread of Hellenistic culture throughout the lands he conquered. From the Mediterranean to Asia to the Middle East he helped expand trade routes and most of all the spread of ideas in religion, politics, and culture. One of the larger aspects of this spread of culture from Alexander was the expansion of the Greeks language across Afro Eurasia. As he conquered the lands the Greek language quickly became used by the people he took over, especially in trade systems and political structures that arose. The newly grown Empire basked in the benefit of a common language, now allowing traders and merchants to understand each other even through the mixed backgrounds. ADD SOMETHING ABOUT THE POLITICAL SYSTEM BENIFITTING FROM THE LAUGUAGE. The common language also introduced people to Greek art, drama, and philosophy. Schools were built all around to teach the citizens of Greek philosophical ideas such as Epicureanism and Stoicism. The culture and political environment created by Alexander s Empire made the competition of Greek city states almost obsolete. My foot all the way on the gas petal, my left hand out the window, and my eyes on the road was my last good memory before it happened. At the speed of 45 between the intersecting of Rich Lane and University Street, my eyes were flashed by the bursting sunlight from my rearview mirror. • 34. Amygdala Case Study Hi Nancy, I really enjoyed your take on this week s discussion post and how you approached it primarily from the emotional and biological perspective. As you mentioned, any damage to amygdala can cause a variety of symptoms, but primarily, the individual will experience an impaired ability to practice and/or identify both fear and negative emotions. Individuals with traumatic brain injuries involving the amygdala react differently to various stimuli, mainly due the numerous factors involved in the way that the amygdala responds based on both the location and the level of brain damage sustained. In some, conditions like Kluver Bucy Syndrome can appear, where the individual has trouble understanding visual information such as mood or facial expressions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, in one study where the brain functioning of 41 murderers were evaluated, researchers found that the amygdala had weaker activity in the left hemisphere of their brain than they did on their right. In other words, poor functioning in some areas indicates an inability to learn from experience, as well as an emotional load that outweighs the ability of the left hemisphere to regulate it (Ramsland, K.M., 2005, p. 70). Damage to this area of the brain can obviously create behavioral manifestations as well, including anger, rage, and inability to react properly to the surrounding environment. Also, in other research noted by Berry Dee (2007), the limbic system can either reward or punish the brain and if areas of the limbic system are damaged, such as the amygdala itself, and these individuals can also exhibit indiscriminate sexual behaviors. I think the biggest piece of information I gained from this week topic is that a variety of responses can come from injury to the amygdala, and given its ability to disrupt recognition of certain emotional behaviors, there is certainly a concern that individuals can either be a danger to themselves (by not being able to detect danger or emotions of others in their environment) or by being a danger to others (as is the case with the findings associated with amygdala dysfunctions in serial ... Recent trends in Psychology on Identity Theory: In the recent past identity is seen as a self narrative which is held as the base for the construct of a person s identity. The behaviour in salience to the social setting is the base of identity formation. The Identity Theory (Stryker 1968, 1980, 1989; Stryker and Serpe 1982, Mc Calls and Simmons 1978, R.H. Turner 1978) explains social behaviour in terms of the reciprocal relationship between the self and the society . The term is used to define the links between a multifaceted notion of the self and wider social structure. (Burke 1980; Mc Call and Simmons 1978; R.H. Turner 1978). It is an extension of the symbolic interactionist theory postulated by Mead (1934) and Blumer (1969) that society influences social behaviour through its affects on the self (Micheal A Hogg, et al.). However, the Identity theory rejects the symbolic interactionist theory as relatively undifferentiated, co operative whole (Stryker 1980, 1987; Stryker and Serpe 1982) and argues that society is complexly differentiated, but nevertheless organized (Stryker and Serpe 1982:206) and thus predicated the idea of the ... Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone by J.K. Rowling is a prime example of this statement. Although Hermione is very smart and brave, Rowling still portrays her as a typical girl throughout the book. It is shown that Hermione is overly emotional at times, and although she is able, it seems that she cannot do things on her own without the help of Harry and Ron. Hermione is every teacher s dream student. She listens in class, raises her hand whenever she has an answer, and does her homework every day.
