Chikungunya is a virus transmitted to humans by infected Aedes albopictus mosquitoes that causes high fever, joint pain, and headaches. It was first isolated in mosquitoes and humans in Tanzania in 1952 and has since caused large epidemics in parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Laboratory tests can detect antibodies to the virus or presence of viral RNA to confirm suspected cases. Reducing exposure to mosquitoes and treating symptoms are the main approaches for dealing with chikungunya.
