Examples Of Culture Encounters In One Out Of Many
Culture Encounters in the Short Story one out of Many
By Naipaul s V.S
People actually need to interact effectively and socialize with other people from other cultures.
Nowadays, globalization has opened the doors for people to improve their inter cultural
communication skills. Culture is defined as the system of knowledge shared by a large group of
people and it also refers to behaviors, values and experiences that people learn and passed to
generations Merriam Webster (2010). On the other hand, culture encounters is a concept used in
modern societies as a result of globalization and immigration. signals our focus on the ways in which
cultures interact, overlap and are transformed by these encounters . Brown. (2008). Naipaul s portrays

He shows that culture encounters is very common in multicultural communities. In order for an
immigrant person like Santosh to fit in a multicultural community, he needs to widen his experiences
and cope with the new society. However, in his struggle to balance between his own culture and the
American culture, he becomes just a one out of many or a mixed character with mixed cultures in a
multicultural community. He belongs neither to the American culture nor to the culture of Bombay.
Consequently, he shuts himself out of the word and chooses to live a solitary life of isolation and
alienation.

Chronological Resumes
Resumes are important in telling a potential employees story in a condensed version of their
educational and employment history. Employers generally prefer single page resumes; however, often
a two page resume is acceptable (Cardon, 2013). Moreover, including too much information
contributes to confusion or jumbled messages and in contrast may actually take away from the
important qualifications and abilities that are displayed. According to Cardon (2013), chronological
resumes are the most common and are preferred 75% of the time. Accordingly, chronological resumes
are designed in reverse order with the most recent work history and education listed first (Gantner,
2010). Chronological resumes are beneficial in displaying a strong work history. Consequently, these
resumes are preferred when there are no gaps in one s work history. In addition, chronological
resumes are also best in displaying a young professional s education and skills (Cardon, 2013). Key

Importance is placed on drawing attention to key skills and qualifications that an employee possesses
(Gantner, 2010). Potential employees that have gaps in their work history use functional resumes to
showcase potential skills while relating experiences using those skills as an advantage in gaining
employment. According to Cardon (2013), professionals with more than 15 years of experience or
potential employees with little work experience benefit most by creating functional resumes.
Components of functional resumes are the name block, summary of qualifications or career summary,

employees with a vast amount of work experience, even individuals with key skills from school,
community, or volunteer activities may benefit from this resume

The Probability of Extraterrestrial Existence Essay
The Probability of Extraterrestrial Existence
Frank Drake, an American astronomer made an equation to find the probability of finding aliens in our
galaxy. The probability of humans finding extraterrestrial intelligence in our galaxy equals
Nfpnef1fifcfL, where N equals the number of stars in the Milky Way, fp equals the fraction of those
stars having planets, ne equals the number of those planets that can support life, f1 equals the number
of those planets on which life arises, fi equals the fraction of those planets on which intelligent life

Though we know a lot about radio astronomy, the problem that is stopping the Search for
ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (better known as SETI) from finding anyone is the vastness of space. The
chance of us pointing our telescopes at the right point in the universe at the right time is astronomical.
The chance of aliens finding us is just as bad. If life on Alpha Centauri, the closest star to our solar
system, found us and sent a message, traveling at the speed of light, we would not receive it for four
and one half years. Then, it would take another four and one half years for our reply to reach them.
The distances make communication while on our home worlds nearly impossible.
Even if aliens came to Earth, they could have ships that cannot be found with our tracking devices. If I
was an extraterrestrial, and saw the problems on Earth, I would take my ship and leave as soon as
possible. I would never go near a race still killing each other over stupid things. I do not think we can
start our search for extraterrestrial intelligence in earnest until we can live in harmony as humans.
Most people do not realize what we are sending to outer space. Every second, we send many
television signals everywhere, traveling at the speed of light, and they are strong enough to be found
anywhere in space. We send so many signals, humans are polluting outer space. The first message they
would receive would be of the 1936 Olympics, since that was the first television signal strong

Historical Events that Impacted Contact Improvisation...
Historical Events that Impacted Contact Improvisation
Dance has evolved greatly throughout the centuries. It began with ballet and has led up to contact
improvisation. This form of dance begun in the early 1970 s and was started by a man named Steve
Paxton and a group of postmodern dancers from New York City. Contact improvisation is a partnering
form of dance and known as the art of moving spontaneously with a group or another person. This
form of dance does not require the exact set of traditional skills of other dance form, it doesn t have a
technique that could be studied, and it is practiced in order to accomplish the highest potential.

Although the Watergate Scandal was an important event during this time period I don t think it greatly
affected contact improvisation.
Another important historical event that occurred during this time period was the end of the Cold War.
In 1975, under President Gerald Ford the US joined the USSR and thirty three other countries to sign
the Helsinki Accords that each member of nations vowed to respect human rights and boundaries. I
think the whole end of the Cold War greatly affected this dance. I think by using contact improvisation
it sort of represented people s feelings better by being able to interact with each other. So by using
contact improvisation I think the dancers were able to get their point across to the audience better.
Therefore, the end of the Cold War was probably very important for contact improvisation and
expressing yourself.
Finally, the Vietnam War was another important historical event going on in the 1970s. When Nixon
was president he sent American troop strength in Vietnam. He also set up a program of
Vietnamization, which was decreasing the number of U.S. troops, offering only advice and assistance.
The U.S. troops eventually returned from Vietnam but the U.S. did not stop with its involvement in
Vietnam. Nixon then extended the war into Laos and Cambodia, there is secretly authorized bombing

African American Military Strategy
INTRODUCTION
The Fabian strategy, also known as strategic defense, is a military strategy in which a weaker force
avoids decisive battles with the enemy and creates delay in a war of attrition until the right moment
arrives to deliver a decisive blow. General George Washington and his Continental Army,
supplemented by the militia, employed this strategy successfully against the British Army during the
War for American Independence. The Russian generals did not, however, employ a successful
strategic defense against Japanese expeditionary forces in the
Russo Japanese War. To understand why, this paper considers the elements of the Fabian strategy and

Dinner, or comida (although its literal translation means meal it is referred to as the evening meal in
Cuba) is a dressy affair in most Cuban homes, regardless of the social status of the family. Every day
when the adults return from work and the children from school and playing outside everyone comes
home to bathe and dress in fresh clothes for dinner, which is served at 7:00 or 8:00 P.M. Some ladies
dress in leisure yet fashionable clothes. In late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries women wore
batas, long white linen dresses, usually hand embroidered with ruffles and lace down to their ankles.
The food served for comida was generally lighter than that served for almuerzo, but was nevertheless
rather elaborate, consisting of three courses. Cubans living in America nowadays don t generally
distinguish much between dishes appropriate for lunch and dinner. Most have adopted the American
custom of having a single large meal in the evening, at which any dish can be served. Meat is very
popular in a Cuban s diet making beef a common main protein in most lunch and dinner dishes.

pharmacy is well managed globally specially in the developed countries. Since the pharmacists are the
only professionals who manufacture the medicines and have an in depth knowledge about the drugs,
they should be given treatment rights on par with the physicians. The careers of pharmacists are

The Ethics Of Under Armour

pursuit of innovation . The company produces apparel, footwear, and sporting equipment for men,
women, and children. The rapidly growing company is dedicated to providing high quality products
for consumers around the globe. Under Armour was founded by CEO Kevin Plank. The 23 year old
former University of Maryland special team s captain, dedicated his time to seek an innovative
material that would wick the moisture and sweat from his body like compression shorts. This
technology would support for a more comfortable and effective performance on the field. He found, in
his experience, that the traditional cotton shirts under his gear was holding all of the sweat, resulting in
Mr. Plank to change into a dry undershirt. Mr. Plank then developed the company with very limited
funding. He had about $20,000 in previous entrepreneurial savings from activities such as selling
flowers on Valentine s Day and selling T shirts at concerts. He also ended up using $40,000 in credit
spread across five cards with the addition of a $250,000 Small Business Loan. In his shop in his
grandmother s basement, he then established his first prototype, selling and marketing his product out
of his trunk across the East Coast. With the pressure of his personal debt, Mr. Plank received his first

Essay On Should Student Athletes Be Paid
Student Athletes Should be Compensated
Life isn t fair, but we all know that. Instead of the athletes sharing in the revenue they create, it s just
the fat cats who benefit. The NCAA has multiple billions of dollars in revenue every year. but the
athletes don t see a pretty penny of that. Lots of people believe that college athletes should not be
compensated monetarily. by the means of money. They think that a scholarship is enough
compensation for the athlete s work. However, But what people do not know is that not all athletes get
scholarships, and not all scholarships include things like food and clothes. So college athletes should
be paid extra money for three reasons: the players put in lots of work, the NCAA makes billions of
dollars every year, and the NCAA acts as an employer. Your topic sentence should reflect the words

That is why they should be compensated; so they could have a little extra spending money for food

the $771 million, which does not include all of the revenue from the schools, and the 460,000 athletes
(ncaa), that would only cost $690 million. That leaves about $80 million left to pay the executives.
Because the NCAA acts as an employer, makes a ton of money, and for all of the time and work the
athletes put in, they should be paid. That s only about $1000 for food and other costs for the semesters
that they are playing a sport. The players are unable to have any other income in those times, so it is

Break Down Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are one of the main types of macronutrients that move throughout the digestive system.
Starting inside of the mouth, the carbohydrate travels through the body until it gets broken down. The
mouth has two forms of digestion, mechanical or chemical. Mechanical digestion includes chewing
food, while chemical digestion uses saliva. The salivary glands belong to the accessory organs of the
digestive tract, but play a very important role in digestion. They produce amylase, which breaks down
the starch amylose and amylopectin into smaller portions. Breaking down starch, is an example of
where chemical digestion occurs in the mouth. When carbohydrates go through the esophagus,
mechanical digestion takes place by the use of peristalsis. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fiber is the only remaining carbohydrate that travels inside of the large intestine. The body eliminates
the leftover fiber in stool. Just like carbohydrates, fats also travel through the digestive tract. The only
organ not involved with fats is the large intestine. Beginning in the mouth, chemical digestion occurs
due to the lingual lipase melting some of the fat in the food. Once the food enters the esophagus,
chemical and mechanical digestion takes place. Like discussed earlier, peristalsis mixes the food, but
in this case it involves mixing the fat with gastric juices. Chemically, gastric lipase breaks down the
fats. Before the fat can move to the small intestine, a few important accessory organs play a role with
fat and bile. Bile is produced in the liver, and then sent to the gallbladder. Once in the gallbladder, the
bile gets released into the small intestine. The small intestine, helps the bile emulsify the fat into small
globules. Lastly, pancreatic lipase, from the pancreas breaks down the fats into monoglycerides,
glycerol, and free fatty

What Is The Theme Of Conflict In Lord Of The Flies
The book Lord of the Flies was written after the author William Golding came back from second
world war. William golding used his experiences from the conflict of the war to write a book that has
conflict as the core message. This is shown by the direct war between civiliation and savagary. It is
also shown by the underline descriptions of the children being opposite to each other. The first point in
the book is the conflict between civilation and savagary. The conflict between these two areas are
shown by the using imagery of the two characters who represent them. This is shown by the decription
of both ralph and jack, the protaganist and the antagonist. Ralph is shown within this book as The boy
with fair hair , the fair mentioned in this quote shows not only the colour of the boys hair but also has
a double meaning for the boy s nature. This shows that the boy is fair , kind, civilised. The colour of
the boy s hair also can symbolised that he is neutral or even kind because of the fair colour (i.e

US Consumer Culture
While the US consumer culture has many different goods that encapsulate its uniqueness, nothing
quite represents the US than its trash. You are probably asking yourself at this point how a country s
waste can have any importance at all in its consumer culture. Waste is one output every company, no
matter its size, must be concerned with. With the ever present climate problems our society faces,
proper disposal of waste is a necessity. Luckily for companies in the US, they have found a way to

Pitilessness In Frankenstein

English 3 In Mary Shelley s novel Frankenstein, there are many demonstrations of pitilessness that

malevolently plots to murder his creation. The creation, be that as it may, is not without his unfeeling

Thirty-Eight-Year-Old Hildegard s Role In The Reformation
In 1136, thirty eight year old Hildegard was passed the role of abbess after the death of Jutta in her
forty fifth year. It was during her year as an abbess that she decided to share her visions with the
world. Each time Hildegard had a vision she became more ill, therefore, she believed keeping these
visions to herself and not sharing them had made her more ill. As a young woman, she had a stormy

She painted it and set it to music, which is why she speaks about her paintings, visions, and mandalas
as illuminations. In Hildegard s teachings, she teaches about the Cosmic Christ and the image of God
in all things. She teaches about the workings of the physical environment as a hidden meaning of the
principles of God. Hildegard s role in the Reformation is one that is compared to the prophets of the
Old Testament. She speaks for God by transmitting only the words that she has received from he
himself. There are two central themes that continue to reoccur within Hildegard s visions, they are the
work (opus) and the word (verbum). Through her visions Hildegard structures the teachings of the
cosmos, which is the idea that nature mysteriously affects the course taken by the world, which is its
history. Through visions Hildegard saw and felt the divine qualities of everything in her natural
environment. She felt God s spiritual characteristics in fire and water, clouds and streams, the sun and
stars, winds and storms, the moon and the night, a spring, a meadow, and the flowers. To people today,
Hildegard s visions would be considered abnormal, but to those that lived through the Middle Ages,

Rejection And Desolation In Frankenstein
When it comes to the aspect of human nature, it can be concluded that as creatures of action, often
propelled by personal emotion, it is without a doubt that human beings have continued to shift away
from society s initial and original values, which in turn, results in society s formation of a biased
judgment as they are keeping away from what they consider to different or dissimilar. Over the course
of the past decades, it has become increasingly unchallenging for human beings to stray from
traditional beliefs. Furthermore, it has become apparent that humans have been very easily motivated
by and are often fueled by selfish desires. As human beings continue to be blinded by their overriding
emotions and allow themselves to be greatly affected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Over the course of the novels, it is revealed the ways in which dangerous tendencies can lead to
rejection and ultimately to physical and mental defeat. Put bluntly, these works illustrates the ways in
which rejection and desolation affects a certain character and the epiphany that ultimately comes to
light due to the tragic consequences they face. In Heart of Darkness, Kurtz highly dangerous instincts
ultimately causes him to be more susceptible to isolation, and consequently dies, possibly as his
punishment, with his final memorable words, The horror! The horror! (164). This phrase is significant
as it is almost a sense of realization, as Kurtz, the ultimately symbol of European colonialism,
recognizes the horror in his tendencies and the ways in which he has been blind to the ways in which
it has psychologically isolated him from the people in his life and more importantly, from humanity.
Furthermore, the nightmarish outcomes of rejection are completely depicted by the influence on
Frankenstein. Frankenstein, from the minute he is faced with the manifestation of his work, flees,
claiming that he felt mingled with the horror and the bitterness of disappointment (50). This illustrates
the ways in which he initially becomes destroyed psychologically, living in fear and seeking
vengeance, and then ultimately physically by his own creation. This event is highly significant in
terms of the consequences of rejection and the ways in which natural impulsivities can lead to down
fall, in that based on the superficial details, Frankenstein had abandoned his creation and lived in
anger and depression. And through this, it is clear to readers that he truly embodies monstrosity. Due
to his instinctive actions, he comes face to face with rejection that he had

The reading of the epic of Gilgamesh points out diverse types of relationship. The ones which kept our
attention is between Gilgamesh and Enkidu and between Gilgamesh and Ishtar.
Gilgamesh, described as two third divine and one third man (p.100) was a strong and oppressive king.
He won many battle by himself and created a fear between his opponents. His behavior wasn t

White Men Vs White Women Essay
Over the history of the United States, we have freed slaves, granted citizenship to people of color,
given women the right to vote, and made many other changes to improve civil rights. Unfortunately,
even today, we are belittling people of different races or genders. We have not abolished the race and
gender laws inside ourselves. Overall, our society has made it harder for some races and genders to
have better social mobility than white men, and sometimes, they never do rise up in wealth, all
because they are a certain race or gender. Most genders and races, because many people think they can
take advantage of other racial and gender groups than any white men, have less respect than white
men.
We may think that we now treat all people equally, but we are simply lying to ourselves. When we see
an attractive white woman, we assume ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This has everything to do with gender and race, because when applying for a job, even with a name

well be a polite but still black man. Because of that and the fact of, just in general, being black,
according to Drew Desilver, a senior writer at the Pew Research Center, the unemployment rate
among blacks is about double that among whites, as it has been for most of the past six decades
(Desilver 1). Also, the job they get would be a supermarket worker or other jobs. Even women are

James K. Polk And Manifest Destiny
James K. Polk was elected as president of the United States in 1848 and with him he brought a
determination to expand territory more than any other president had before. In his one term
administration he expanded the country by two thirds. Polks hunger for more land resulted in a war
with Mexico over Texas which evoked lots of opposition from the Whig party. The idea of Manifest
Destiny was germinating throughout Democrats everywhere, countering the Whig ideology of true
republicanism . They believed A nation cannot simultaneously devote its energies to the absorption of
others territories and the improvement of its own, (pg, 49). Polk ignored this belief and soon John C.
Fremont was declaring California independent and Stephen Watts Kearny was leading his army to
several victories south of the Rio Grande. Nicholas Trist was able to get Mexico to sign the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo, recognizing the Rio Grande boundary of Texas and ceding New Mexico and
upper Californian to the US. Now that this triumph of Manifest Destiny was complete, the question of
expanding slavery to the newly acquired territories arose. Polk assumed there would not be slavery
there because it would simply not work in the natural conditions of the lands but southerners strongly
disagreed. Northern congressmen tried to pass a resolution known as the Wilmot Proviso to exclude
slavery from the new territory, extremely infuriating southerners and dividing the parties into a
conflict of sections.

Cannibalism And Its Effects On Today s Modern Society
Cannibalism, also more formally known as anthropophagy, can be defined as the act of ingesting
human flesh, blood or internal organs by a human being. The reasons behind cannibalism vary from
being ritualistic to psychopathic and the practice manifests itself in many different forms. Often
profoundly fantasised by Western society as the man eating myth (Arens 1979, in King 2000, p.106),
cannibalism as a result has become subject to critical speculation and lingering doubt.
This essay argues that although cannibalism is often conceptualised in today s modern society as a
myth, there is much anthropophagical evidence to suggest otherwise; that cannibalism is indeed an
underlying reality. In support of this contention, this essay aims ... Show more content on

Typically associated with sacred beliefs and matters related to the spiritual regeneration of the
deceased, including respect and honour (Carbonell et al. 2010, p.539), endo cannibalism denotes an
affectionate form of anthropophagy in which the consumed individuals were members of the same
social or kinship group as those who consume them. In stark contrast, exo cannibalism, otherwise
known as warfare cannibalism, refers to the consumption of strangers, enemies, foreign individuals
beyond the tribe and usually signifies expressions of hostility, violence, and contempt and may
indicate a clear predator/prey relationship between the consumers and the consumed (Carbonell et al.
2010, p.539).
Up until sometime during the late 1960s, the Amazonian Wari ate specific parts of their late in laws
(affines ) bodies and they did so out of compassion for the deceased and their immediate family; to
gratify the former and console the latter. Endo cannibalism was a grieving mechanism through which
the bereaved came to terms with their loss and carried on living without being perpetually made sad
by the presence of a rotting body in the cold, desolate earth. Opposed to the pervasive,
functionalist/cultural materialistic perspective that cannibals eat human flesh solely for a scientific
nutritional purpose for the same reason as others eat domestic animal flesh (Harris 1977, in Sahlins
1978, p.45), Wari mortuary

The Individual in Judaism and Hinduism
Through the Bhagavad Gita and the Book of Job we see the similar ways that different religions affirm
that the individual can t have the same level of knowledge as the divine. We also, however, see that
while Hinduism offers an explanation for this knowledge disparity, and offers a path of empowerment
that allows the individual to strive for the knowledge level of the divine, Judaism simply deems that
we are insignificant beings when compared to God, and that we can t ever achieve nearly the same
amount of knowledge as God. The Book of Job tells those who consider the bible to be a holy text,
namely Jewish and Christian people, the story of Job. His story tells us that we, as individual human
beings, are lesser beings than God and can t know as much as God. At the end of the story, after
hearing God mention the greatness of his creations, Job finally breaks and admits that he was wrong to
question God, as Job, an individual human being, has a limited amount of knowledge compared to
God. While God is pleased with this response from the previously dubious Job, he is not happy with
Zophar, Eliphaz, and Bildad for claiming to know why God acted in the manner in which he did while
they were consoling Job. God relents however, and forgives them after Job prays for them. God is so
delighted with Job for withstanding all of the punishments Satan had put forth upon him that he
rewarded Job with two times more of everything he had lost, including his children. This ending to the

Relevance For The Post 2015 Mdgs Agenda
CONFLICT AND DEVELOPMENT
Relevance for the post 2015 MDGs agenda
Conflict is a relatively new concept in development, and the relation between the two is complex and
remains not entirely understood. However, and given that the correlation among insecurity and
development is clear, there is a general consensus in arguing that development cannot happen without
security. In 2015, end of the Millennium Development Goals cycle, fragile and conflict affected
countries are lagging far behind other developing countries in meeting these goals. Thus, the success
of the MDGs is threatened and it depends, to a great extent, in the way conflict is addressed. We do

This new approach of understanding development, known as human development, gives its due to
conflict in explaining development or the lack of it.
Although today related to negative outcomes, war has not always had the same impact. Indeed, many
authors such as Tilly (1985) and Bates (2010) have analyzed how conflict led to the creation of States
in Europe during the 14th and 15th century. According to them, the presence of wars and the need for
protection raised because rural areas became wealthier as their population density decreased. This
demographic change was mainly due to the progress of manufacturing and its consequent
urbanization. To be successful at war, monarchs needed new sources of capital that were obtained
through taxation, leading to the creation of a more complex bureaucratic system necessary to collect
these taxes. Of course, individuals resisted to taxation, so monarchs had to bargain with citizens and
concede some power in return for taxes. This way, monarchs gradually limited their own power,
igniting the state building process, and laying the groundwork for future democracy and growth.
However, Europe s conditions of state formation were not replicated in developing countries later, due
to a radically different context. Amid the Cold War, rulers in less developed countries could obtain
their resources through foreign aid,

Pressure Ulcer Prevention
Prevention of Pressure Ulcers
Pressure ulcer is a common geriatric syndrome seeing in patients suffering from acute and chronic
illness. Pressure ulcers can be acquired while in the hospital, long term care facilities or in the home.
Personal definition of Pressure ulcer is an injury to the skin and underlying tissue due unrelieved
pressure and other factors, including by not exclusive to decreased tissue perfusion, excess moisture,
and shear and friction. The NPUAP defines Pressure Ulcer as injury to the skin and/or underlying
tissue usually over a bony prominence, as a result of pressure, or pressure in combination with shear

Prevention interventions include risk assessment, repositioning, frequent skin inspections, pressure
relieving devices, nutrition and hydration, and caregiver education. Risk assessment should be on
admission to the home health services, as as often as needed such as whenever the patient condition
declines. Similar to hospital policies, the Braden Scale can be used in home settings along with nurse s
clinical judgment.
Additionally, patients can be the nurse s allies regarding their own health care. Patients should be
encouraged to turn and roll in bed as often as possible. When the patient is immobile and self turning
and repositioning is not possible, the nurse and caregivers should be repositioning at least every two
hours. However, strategies for pressure ulcer prevention are not always successful. Pressure ulcers are
an important problem in the home care (Paquay, et al., 2008, p. 628). Pressure ulcers can result in
hospital readmission and health decline. Frequent skin inspections are essential to find and treat
pressure ulcers at early stages. Pressure relieving devices such as heel and elbow protector, egg crate

Early Timurid Art
The early Timurid art displayed strong Chinese influences. T. Lentz and G. Lowry found that cursive
and poetic lines and contours in Persian manuscripts might be the outcome of Persians study of the
Chinese literati paintings. Some of the Chinese sketches on Buddhist monks or birds such as hawks
were reproduced in the Timurid Court. The admiration of the Chinese styles was more evident in the

Black History Month or African American History Month is celebrated every year to recognize the
vital role of African American in the United States History. Black History Month has been honor in
February. The main reasons to mark February as a History Month was because the birthday of
President Abraham Lincoln who abolished slavery is in February. Also, the birthday of Frederick

an African American gain the right to vote in February. Those ideas make February commemorate

George And Lennie Relationship Analysis
In the novella Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, the relationship between Lennie Small and
George Milton is complex. Lennie and George are two companions who look for work and brave the
hardships of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression together. Although Lennie and George are both
grown men, their relationship resembles more of a child and a single parent, or a boy and his dog.
Lennie is portrayed as animalistic and childish through his behavior and Steinbeck s comparisons.
This reveals the crucial power dynamic in George and Lennie s relationship. In the beginning of the
novella, Lennie is portrayed as innocent and dependent on George. When Lennie had a mouse and

Burns continues by saying that unpropitious events occur, even in the lives of the everyday man.
Burns implies that the mouse should consider himself lucky because it cannot think about the past; it
only focuses on the present and the future, while men dwell on the past. Lennie and the mouse have
similar characteristics; just like the mouse, Lennie cannot remember the past. In the novella, George
gets frustrated with Lennie for always forgetting things. When Lennie could not remember why they
had left Weed and why they were going somewhere new, George says ...[s]o you forgot already (4). In
Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men, Lennie is a metaphor for the mouse, and George a metaphor for men.
George can look back on the past, which is why he carries the responsibility of Lennie. Lennie is again
given animalistic character traits. Steinbeck does this to create a dynamic in Lennie and George s
relationship, that of a man and animal. In which George is the responsible one who looks out for
Lennie. The parallels between Lennie and George s relationship and the relationship that their
workmate, Candy had with his dog reaffirm the power dynamic between George and Lennie. In the
novella, Candy must kill his dog because it is old and weak. Candy felt such extreme regret when it
came time to kill his dog, that instead of doing

assaulted me. Sully, her colleague, responds Yes, he did. Dr.Temperance Brennan also argues on how
producers view women as objects as seen in figure 3. She is also very independent and makes it clear
she does not belong to anyone (see Figure 4). Temperance is an independent woman who makes it
clear on several occasions that she challenges the gender norms.
The second main character is Seeley Booth a typical FBI agent. Booth embodies all norms of
masculinity to which men strive and does not challenge the hegemonic male. He is depicted as a tough
guy. As James lull describes in hegemony is the power or dominance that one social group hold over
others (Lull,1995). Booth is male dominance over women, and his gut holds more valued than
Dr.Temperance Brennan countless degrees and years of schooling. In the show, he has saved the day

Brennan. The voice of reason is always Agent Booth, despite the fact Dr.Temperance Brennan is more

simulation, I mean board game. Nonetheless, Skirmish the board game, is a representation of what it
was like to command the American troops or British troops. Through this experience, we learned how
realistic it is, several factors that determine the outcome of the game, and about how best to command
your troops. The Skirmish board game is a very realistic depiction of the Revolution in several ways.
During the American Revolution, one of the characteristics of Washington s Army was its ability to
move troops much faster than the British. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Skirmish board game also reflects the advantage George Washington had over the British thanks
to the intelligence gained by American spies. This comes when the British player must declare which
unit they are moving before they move it. This is like how the Americans almost always knew what
the British were planning to do, before they did it. At the same time, the board game also incorporated
the vulnerability of American leaders by using special American unit pieces with black dots. These
pieces, representing the different heads of Washington s Army were to be protected at all costs, since
they would be the determining factor between a win or a loss. Another example of the realism of the
Skirmish board game was the fact that the British army was made up of five large blocks with the
number five (to indicate the number of troops in that block) on them as opposed to the American units
which were sixteen one piece units. This represents how tight knit the British army was during the
American Revolution, as opposed to how split up the American army was. The Americans were, in an
essence, one large army made up of small town militias. One of the smaller American militias was
Daniel Morgan and his mountain men. They are credited for being some of the best sharpshooters of

Overview of the WARN Act
For so many years, this nation has been creating policies and laws to protect the people and their way
of life. One particular law that was passed still creates a lot of confusion on whether this law pertains
to them or not. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act is a federal law to
protect workers, their families, and society from sudden or unforeseen job losses due to plant closings
and massive layoffs. The WARN Act was originally enacted on August 4, 1988, but it evidentially
became effective on February 4, 1989 (Department of Labor, 2013). Unlike other laws that are
enforced by certain government or federal agencies, the WARN Act in which an employee, their
representative, or a government official has the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Department of Energy (DOE) concluded there were not enough sufficient benefits being offered
to the taxpayers for them to extend the enrichment at the plant (USEC). With the increasing cost of
production resulting from power consumption and the decreasing prices in nuclear fuel, the USEC felt
that it was in their best interest to begin the process of layoffs in order to continue operations into the
next year while trying to manage inventory, meet customer orders, as well as meeting the turnover
requirements with the DOE on its lease (USEC, 2013). To prepare themselves, the USEC utilized the
provisions of the WARN Act to properly commence with their scheduled layoff while providing
proper notice to their employees despite the many years of excellent performance from its workforce.
While the act may provide some control of policy, it can cause quite of bit of confusion for certain
departments of the government. As discussed previously, the WARN Act provides businesses with a
safeguard measure to utilize in the event of a shutdown or mass layoffs, but for the federal
government, many questions came about in light of the recent furloughs and shutdowns. The WARN
Act states that businesses must provide their employees with proper notice, but the furloughs tested
that notion due to being unsure of when exactly the furloughs were going to take place. I am currently

Warpaint Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis
The Power Of The Unknown
In Lord Of The Flies, the power of the warpaint, and the beast give jack great command over the other
children Do you remember Halloween when you were little? I do. I remember putting on a mask and
feeling powerful and confident. I think the same thing happens with Jack and his war paint transition.
War paint gives Jack power. In the novel, as soon as Jack changes his face using war paint, many
members of Ralph s tribe step up to follow jack in his new tribe. Without war paint Ralph seems to
just be a figurehead of a leader. He is the shell of what was the chief. Jack is now the new leader
because of his new instilled confidence.Even though Jack may not actually have the job of leader but,
he is already the leader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you remember earlier in the book, Jack was told by Ralph to keep the signal fire burning. But instead
of thinking of the whole group like a good chief would, He only thought about himself and what he
wanted to do. Jack checked, vaguely irritated by this irrelevance but too happy to let it worry him.
(Golding 69). This quote helps show that Jack is not a good leader. He cares more about what he
wants than what the whole group wants making him the most irresponsible character in the book. With
Ralph actually being the most responsible character in the book ,He is definitely the rightful chief but
as we later learn, the right chief doesn t always get picked. Another example of Jack not being
responsible as a leader was when the circle chant took place. All at once, Robert was screaming and
struggling with the strength of frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing his knife. Behind
him was Roger, fighting to get close. The chant rose ritually, as at the last moment of a dance or a
hunt. (Golding 114). This quote explains that if Jack were a proper leader he would not have let poor
Robert almost get killed. Jack didn t even try to stop the feeding frenzy that was the hunters. In
conclusion, with Jack s new power He does not take responsibility and is not a proper leader and is a
great danger to many of the young people on the

There are six slaughterhouses in the world, to nourish a growing population companies have to
provide transportation of the meat. The meat is either being transported by airplane or large trucks.
The large trucks, airplanes, and even the factories practices, machinery and the disposing of animal
waste are contributing to pollution. The environment due to these aspects is getting worse. As a result,
the federal government should mandate a program and reduce farmer s subsidies to manage farmer s
chemical fertilizer and animal waste. Also, the federal government should regulate farmers to reduce
their tons of soil erosion and implement dietary strategies to reduce methane emission to the
atmosphere. The federal government should pass a law so farmers and companies can implement
dietary strategies to their cattle because it will reduce the carbon dioxide and methane gasses released
in the environment. According to Karen Beauchemin and Sean McGinn, members of the Agri Food

Research Paper On Wicca
Paganism is the oldest religion or form of worship that existed in the world. By general definition,
anyone who does not follow one of the mainstream religions is a Pagan (i.e. anyone who does not
believe in one God). Pagans look after the Mother Earth, usually worship a number of deities both
feminine and masculine.
Witchcraft is not a religion it is a craft practised by witches and wizards. It is often referred to as a
craft of the wise . This is because traditionally, the wise woman (or man) who lived closer to the
woods or nature, would know all the herbs growing nearby. They would use those herbs to heal others.

Unlike paganism and witchcraft, which do not have set of rules to follow Wicca is organised and has a
form of a doctrine that needs to be followed to call oneself a
Wiccan.
The three terms are often used interchangeably, but in reality they re not the same.
Every Wiccan is a Pagan. This is because Wicca falls into definition of Paganism. It does not follow
one God.
Having said that NOT every pagan is a Wiccan. There are many other paths such as Druidism, Native
American, Goddess Spirituality to name a few. Some pagans may follow an eclectic form meaning a
mix of various religions.
Finally, most Wiccans are witches. In fact in some sources I read that every Wiccan is a witch. I have

My Fairy Dream
I grew up in a world full of fairy tales and Disney characters. My parents who were trying to find a
way to distract my 5 years old mind turn on the tv, and there I was admittedly taken on a journey to a
magical place where I was safe in the knowledge that every ending is happy ever after. (this is an
extended metaphor where I compare Disney to the real world I used this to show the reader how I
thought the world was as happy and perfect as Disney and television makes them out to be). I soon
came to the realization that the world is not so happy after all.
I got out of the car and walk into the doors of my new school, I was like Nemo when he got taken
away from his home and got put into a completely new environment, (I use this simile to compare
how nervous and scared I was going to a new school.) I continue to be hopeful and started to

everyone was as welcoming as she was to me, I started to notice that people were being really distance

group of girls in my class, did you see the new girl she has the thickest accent ever, she must be really
stupid. Everything around me stops and my body was a statue (This is a metaphor explaining how I
felt when I found out that my accent was the thing limiting people from seeing my true capabilities).

A Clean, Well-Lighted Place
Out of the short stories that I wrote about, the one that best follows Faulkner s dictum would have to
be A Clean, Well Lighted Place . This story is about connecting with others, even if through
commiseration. Though the people wallowing about the bar are lonely and feel that they have nothing
to go home to, they have each other. Knowing that you are not alone, that is something. They endure
the hardships and loneliness of their everyday lives and end their day amongst people such as the older
waiter, who take pity on them because they have experienced the very same feelings. For me, this
story begged the question: if you have nothing, but share that feeling of nothingness with many others,
does it make it something? I felt that this story

Chronological Resumes Resumes areimportant in telling a potential employees story in a condensed version of their educational and employment history. Employers generally prefer single page resumes; however, often a two page resume is acceptable (Cardon, 2013). Moreover, including too much information contributes to confusion or jumbled messages and in contrast may actually take away from the important qualifications and abilities that are displayed. According to Cardon (2013), chronological resumes are the most common and are preferred 75% of the time. Accordingly, chronological resumes are designed in reverse order with the most recent work history and education listed first (Gantner, 2010). Chronological resumes are beneficial in displaying a strong work history. Consequently, these resumes are preferred when there are no gaps in one s work history. The chance of us pointing our telescopes at the right point in the universe at the right time is astronomical. The chance of aliens finding us is just as bad. If life on Alpha Centauri, the closest star to our solar system, found us and sent a message, traveling at the speed of light, we would not receive it for four and one half years. Then, it would take another four and one half years for our reply to reach them. The distances make communication while on our home worlds nearly impossible. If I was an extraterrestrial, and saw the problems on Earth, I would take my ship and leave as soon as possible. I would never go near a race still killing each other over stupid things. I do not think we can start our search for extraterrestrial intelligence in earnest until we can live in harmony as humans. Most people do not realize what we are sending to outer space. Every second, we send many television signals everywhere, traveling at the speed of light, and they are strong enough to be found anywhere in space. In 1975, under President Gerald Ford the US joined the USSR and thirty three other countries to sign the Helsinki Accords that each member of nations vowed to respect human rights and boundaries. I think the whole end of the Cold War greatly affected this dance. I think by using contact improvisation it sort of represented people s feelings better by being able to interact with each other. So by using contact improvisation I think the dancers were able to get their point across to the audience better. Therefore, the end of the Cold War was probably very important for contact improvisation and expressing yourself. Essay On ShouldStudent Athletes Be Paid Student Athletes Should be Compensated Life isn t fair, but we all know that. Instead of the athletes sharing in the revenue they create, it s just the fat cats who benefit. The NCAA has multiple billions of dollars in revenue every year. but the athletes don t see a pretty penny of that. Lots of people believe that college athletes should not be compensated monetarily. by the means of money. They think that a scholarship is enough compensation for the athlete s work. However, But what people do not know is that not all athletes get scholarships, and not all scholarships include things like food and clothes. So college athletes should be paid extra money for three reasons: the players put in lots of work, the NCAA makes billions of dollars every year, and the NCAA acts as an employer. Your topic sentence should reflect the words used in the thesis division. The average NCAA student athletes work about 43.3 hours ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is why they should be compensated; so they could have a little extra spending money for food and other things. The athletes should just get about $1000 $1500 per semester that they are active in a sport. That would give them a good amount to spend on food and whatever else they want. So out of the $771 million, which does not include all of the revenue from the schools, and the 460,000 athletes (ncaa), that would only cost $690 million. That leaves about $80 million left to pay the executives. Because the NCAA acts as an employer, makes a ton of money, and for all of the time and work the athletes put in, they should be paid. Break Down Carbohydrates Carbohydratesare one of the main types of macronutrients that move throughout the digestive system. Starting inside of the mouth, the carbohydrate travels through the body until it gets broken down. The mouth has two forms of digestion, mechanical or chemical. Mechanical digestion includes chewing food, while chemical digestion uses saliva. The salivary glands belong to the accessory organs of the digestive tract, but play a very important role in digestion. They produce amylase, which breaks down the starch amylose and amylopectin into smaller portions. Breaking down starch, is an example of where chemical digestion occurs in the mouth. When carbohydrates go through the esophagus, mechanical digestion takes place by the use of peristalsis. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fiber is the only remaining carbohydrate that travels inside of the large intestine. The body eliminates the leftover fiber in stool. Just like carbohydrates, fats also travel through the digestive tract. The only organ not involved with fats is the large intestine. Beginning in the mouth, chemical digestion occurs due to the lingual lipase melting some of the fat in the food. Once the food enters the esophagus, chemical and mechanical digestion takes place. Like discussed earlier, peristalsis mixes the food, but in this case it involves mixing the fat with gastric juices. Chemically, gastric lipase breaks down the fats. Before the fat can move to the small intestine, a few important accessory organs play a role with fat and bile. Bile is produced in the liver, and then sent to the gallbladder. Once in the gallbladder, the bile gets released into the small intestine. The small intestine, helps the bile emulsify the fat into small globules. Lastly, pancreatic lipase, from the pancreas breaks down the fats into monoglycerides, glycerol, and free fatty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Oral History OfOral History Paper Hua 1 Dang Hua Professor Mary Anderson American Studies 101 27 September 2015 Oral History Paper The subject of my interview is a 68 year elderly Vietnamese man named Minh Bi Ngo. Mr. Ngo has white long hair, a medium long white beard and a distinctive mole on the bottom of his left eye and a thick Vietnamese accent. He was born and raised in Vietnam on April 3rd, 1947. He is also a widow who is currently living with his daughter in Westminster, Orange County. Originally, Mr. Ngo was from the city of Buon Ma Thuot in the province of Dak Lak, Vietnam. He then immigrated to Falls Church, Virginia where he began his new life in the United States. At the time of the interview, Mr. Ngo looked very exhausted yet grateful at the same time. I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Ngo through his daughter, who is a friend of my cousin. I conducted the interview on the afternoon of September 24th, which lasted for two hours. During the interview Mr. Ngo shared with me his experiences during the Vietnam war, his times in the Vietnamese Reeducation camps, his immigration to the United States, and his involvement in the Vietnamese community today. As the interview continues on, I began to comprehend a little bit more on the way it was back then and how the common folks Hua 2 were affected by the Vietnam War. I learned that many South Vietnamese were persecuted for not supporting the idea of Communism. They were being executed, being placed in prison camps, or were being horribly ... What Is TheTheme Of Conflict In Lord Of The Flies The book Lord of the Flies was written after the author William Golding came back from second world war. William golding used his experiences from the conflict of the war to write a book that has conflict as the core message. This is shown by the direct war between civiliation and savagary. It is also shown by the underline descriptions of the children being opposite to each other. The first point in the book is the conflict between civilation and savagary. The conflict between these two areas are shown by the using imagery of the two characters who represent them. This is shown by the decription of both ralph and jack, the protaganist and the antagonist. Ralph is shown within this book as The boy with fair hair , the fair mentioned in this quote shows not only the colour of the boys hair but also has a double meaning for the boy s nature. This shows that the boy is fair , kind, civilised. The colour of the boy s hair also can symbolised that he is neutral or even kind because of the fair colour (i.e white/blond)is lacking darkness ... Both these words are veery negative showing that the island is much like hell but the children see it as paradise because there are no parents that is why it is show in both ways. The book The Lord of the Flies has the message of confict to the core. This in my opinion is used to give the user insight into a battlefield. US Consumer Culture Whilethe US consumer culture has many different goods that encapsulate its uniqueness, nothing quite represents the US than its trash. You are probably asking yourself at this point how a country s waste can have any importance at all in its consumer culture. Waste is one output every company, no matter its size, must be concerned with. With the ever present climate problems our society faces, proper disposal of waste is a necessity. Luckily for companies in the US, they have found a way to capitalize through strategic marketing and planned obsolescence. Consumers have the opportunity to make conscious decisions to help our environment, but the reality behind products is well hidden and needs to be brought to higher attention. Waste epitomizes the American consumer culture to continuously buy new products, and not think about the harm it is causing the environment. Recycling has evolved over time into a ploy to make consumers spend more money, and is causing more harm to the environment by increasing the amount of packaging used over product. The growing consumerist culture can be attributed to the increased greenwashing scheme. Is it morally right for companies to increase their waste in order to make more ... Pitilessness In Frankenstein CrisleidyRosario English 3 In Mary Shelley s novel Frankenstein, there are many demonstrations of pitilessness that happen. The demonstrations of cold bloodedness were submitted by Victor Frankenstein and his creation. A portion of the ways that Victor was unfeeling to his creation include: relinquishing his creation in the wake of giving it life, dishonestly claims to give him an existence accomplice, and malevolently plots to murder his creation. The creation, be that as it may, is not without his unfeeling activities. Thirty-Eight-Year-Old Hildegard sRole In The Reformation In 1136, thirty eight year old Hildegard was passed the role of abbess after the death of Jutta in her forty fifth year. It was during her year as an abbess that she decided to share her visions with the world. Each time Hildegard had a vision she became more ill, therefore, she believed keeping these visions to herself and not sharing them had made her more ill. As a young woman, she had a stormy prophetic vision, which she described as fiery light. I saw an extremely strong, sparkling, fiery light coming from the open heavens. It pierced my brain, my heart and my breasts through and through like a flame which did not burn; however, it warmed me. Hildegard s role in the Reformation is one that is compared to the prophets of the Old Testament. She speaks for God by transmitting only the words that she has received from he himself. There are two central themes that continue to reoccur within Hildegard s visions, they are the work (opus) and the word (verbum). Rejection And DesolationIn Frankenstein When it comes to the aspect of human nature, it can be concluded that as creatures of action, often propelled by personal emotion, it is without a doubt that human beings have continued to shift away from society s initial and original values, which in turn, results in society s formation of a biased judgment as they are keeping away from what they consider to different or dissimilar. Over the course of the past decades, it has become increasingly unchallenging for human beings to stray from traditional beliefs. Furthermore, it has become apparent that humans have been very easily motivated by and are often fueled by selfish desires. Over the course of the novels, it is revealed the ways in which dangerous tendencies can lead to rejection and ultimately to physical and mental defeat. Put bluntly, these works illustrates the ways in which rejection and desolation affects a certain character and the epiphany that ultimately comes to light due to the tragic consequences they face. In Heart of Darkness, Kurtz highly dangerous instincts ultimately causes him to be more susceptible to isolation, and consequently dies, possibly as his punishment, with his final memorable words, The horror! The horror! (164). This phrase is significant as it is almost a sense of realization, as Kurtz, the ultimately symbol of European colonialism, recognizes the horror in his tendencies and the ways in which he has been blind to the ways in which it has psychologically isolated him from the people in his life and more importantly, from humanity. Furthermore, the nightmarish outcomes of rejection are completely depicted by the influence on Frankenstein. Frankenstein, from the minute he is faced with the manifestation of his work, flees, claiming that he felt mingled with the horror and the bitterness of disappointment (50). This illustrates the ways in which he initially becomes destroyed psychologically, living in fear and seeking vengeance, and then ultimately physically by his own creation. This event is highly significant in terms of the consequences of rejection and the ways in which natural impulsivities can lead to down fall, in that based on the superficial details, Frankenstein had abandoned his creation and lived in anger and depression. And through this, it is clear to readers that he truly embodies monstrosity. Due to his instinctive actions, he comes face to face with rejection that he had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

White Men VsWhite Women Essay Over the history of the United States, we have freed slaves, granted citizenship to people of color, given women the right to vote, and made many other changes to improve civil rights. Unfortunately, even today, we are belittling people of different races or genders. We have not abolished the race and gender laws inside ourselves. Overall, our society has made it harder for some races and genders to have better social mobility than white men, and sometimes, they never do rise up in wealth, all because they are a certain race or gender. Most genders and races, because many people think they can take advantage of other racial and gender groups than any white men, have less respect than white men. James K. PolkAnd Manifest Destiny James K. Polk was elected as president of the United States in 1848 and with him he brought a determination to expand territory more than any other president had before. In his one term administration he expanded the country by two thirds. Polks hunger for more land resulted in a war with Mexico over Texas which evoked lots of opposition from the Whig party. The idea of Manifest Destiny was germinating throughout Democrats everywhere, countering the Whig ideology of true republicanism . They believed A nation cannot simultaneously devote its energies to the absorption of others territories and the improvement of its own, (pg, 49). Polk ignored this belief and soon John C. Fremont was declaring California independent and Stephen Watts Kearny was leading his army to several victories south of the Rio Grande. Nicholas Trist was able to get Mexico to sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, recognizing the Rio Grande boundary of Texas and ceding New Mexico and upper Californian to the US. Now that this triumph of Manifest Destiny was complete, the question of expanding slavery to the newly acquired territories arose. Polk assumed there would not be slavery there because it would simply not work in the natural conditions of the lands but southerners strongly disagreed. Northern congressmen tried to pass a resolution known as the Wilmot Proviso to exclude slavery from the new territory, extremely infuriating southerners and dividing the parties into a conflict of sections. ... Cannibalism And ItsEffects On Today s Modern Society Cannibalism, also more formally known as anthropophagy, can be defined as the act of ingesting human flesh, blood or internal organs by a human being. The reasons behind cannibalism vary from being ritualistic to psychopathic and the practice manifests itself in many different forms. Often profoundly fantasised by Western society as the man eating myth (Arens 1979, in King 2000, p.106), cannibalism as a result has become subject to critical speculation and lingering doubt. This essay argues that although cannibalism is often conceptualised in today s modern society as a myth, there is much anthropophagical evidence to suggest otherwise; that cannibalism is indeed an underlying reality. In stark contrast, exo cannibalism, otherwise known as warfare cannibalism, refers to the consumption of strangers, enemies, foreign individuals beyond the tribe and usually signifies expressions of hostility, violence, and contempt and may indicate a clear predator/prey relationship between the consumers and the consumed (Carbonell et al. 2010, p.539). Endo cannibalism was a grieving mechanism through which the bereaved came to terms with their loss and carried on living without being perpetually made sad by the presence of a rotting body in the cold, desolate earth. The Individual inJudaism and Hinduism Through the Bhagavad Gita and the Book of Job we see the similar ways that different religions affirm that the individual can t have the same level of knowledge as the divine. We also, however, see that while Hinduism offers an explanation for this knowledge disparity, and offers a path of empowerment that allows the individual to strive for the knowledge level of the divine, Judaism simply deems that we are insignificant beings when compared to God, and that we can t ever achieve nearly the same amount of knowledge as God. The Book of Job tells those who consider the bible to be a holy text, namely Jewish and Christian people, the story of Job. His story tells us that we, as individual human beings, are lesser beings than God and can t know as much as God. At the end of the story, after hearing God mention the greatness of his creations, Job finally breaks and admits that he was wrong to question God, as Job, an individual human being, has a limited amount of knowledge compared to God. While God is pleased with this response from the previously dubious Job, he is not happy with Zophar, Eliphaz, and Bildad for claiming to know why God acted in the manner in which he did while they were consoling Job. God relents however, and forgives them after Job prays for them. This new approach of understanding development, known as human development, gives its due to conflict in explaining development or the lack of it. Although today related to negative outcomes, war has not always had the same impact. Indeed, many authors such as Tilly (1985) and Bates (2010) have analyzed how conflict led to the creation of States in Europe during the 14th and 15th century. According to them, the presence of wars and the need for protection raised because rural areas became wealthier as their population density decreased. This demographic change was mainly due to the progress of manufacturing and its consequent urbanization. To be successful at war, monarchs needed new sources of capital that were obtained through taxation, leading to the creation of a more complex bureaucratic system necessary to collect these taxes. Of course, individuals resisted to taxation, so monarchs had to bargain with citizens and concede some power in return for taxes. This way, monarchs gradually limited their own power, igniting the state building process, and laying the groundwork for future democracy and growth. However, Europe s conditions of state formation were not replicated in developing countries later, due to a radically different context. Early Timurid Art Theearly Timurid art displayed strong Chinese influences. T. Lentz and G. Lowry found that cursive and poetic lines and contours in Persian manuscripts might be the outcome of Persians study of the Chinese literati paintings. Some of the Chinese sketches on Buddhist monks or birds such as hawks were reproduced in the Timurid Court. The admiration of the Chinese styles was more evident in the paintings by Kamal al Din Bihzad whose advocacy of Romanticism and Naturalism had their references to pre modern Chinese still life and landscape paintings. Besides paintings and manuscripts, the record of trade transactions in Turfan specifies that the major export from the Central Asia to China was horses, while the imports were robes, silk and paper money. Influence Of AmericanCulture On South Korea South Korea has had an incredible journey in the past sixty years. It had been burned to the ground in a vicious civil war, and is now a top fifteen world economy and is rapidly becoming world s plastic surgery leader. It is known that American culture has come to dominate South Korea s culture in more ways than one. But the area in which it made great inroads is Korean ageism. Since America has gained cultural dominance over South Korea following America s introduction of cosmetic surgery, they have become fixated on beauty enhancements, thus causing age discrimination to be rife. George And LennieRelationship Analysis In the novella Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, the relationship between Lennie Small and George Milton is complex. Lennie and George are two companions who look for work and brave the hardships of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression together. Although Lennie and George are both grown men, their relationship resembles more of a child and a single parent, or a boy and his dog. Lennie is portrayed as animalistic and childish through his behavior and Steinbeck s comparisons. This reveals the crucial power dynamic in George and Lennie s relationship. In the beginning of the novella, Lennie is portrayed as innocent and dependent on George. When Lennie had a mouse and George asked for it, Steinbeck describes Lennie s reaction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Burns continues by saying that unpropitious events occur, even in the lives of the everyday man. Burns implies that the mouse should consider himself lucky because it cannot think about the past; it only focuses on the present and the future, while men dwell on the past. Lennie and the mouse have similar characteristics; just like the mouse, Lennie cannot remember the past. In the novella, George gets frustrated with Lennie for always forgetting things. When Lennie could not remember why they had left Weed and why they were going somewhere new, George says ...[s]o you forgot already (4). In Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men, Lennie is a metaphor for the mouse, and George a metaphor for men. George can look back on the past, which is why he carries the responsibility of Lennie. Lennie is again given animalistic character traits. Steinbeck does this to create a dynamic in Lennie and George s relationship, that of a man and animal. In which George is the responsible one who looks out for Lennie. The parallels between Lennie and George s relationship and the relationship that their workmate, Candy had with his dog reaffirm the power dynamic between George and Lennie. In the novella, Candy must kill his dog because it is old and weak. Candy felt such extreme regret when it came time to kill his dog, that instead of doing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The As AProgressive Series Of Our Time Bones can be considered a progressive series of our time. It is a forensic anthropologist called Dr.Temperance Brennan. She is a woman that solves murders with her team at the Jeffersonian. Her partner is called Agent Booth from the FBI. The TV series can be described as being sexist yet Misogyny. In this paper, I will deconstruct each character with sociological lenses. It will analyze how each character reacts to others and events. Sully, her colleague, responds Yes, he did. Dr.Temperance Brennan also argues on how producers view women as objects as seen in figure 3. She is also very independent and makes it clear she does not belong to anyone (see Figure 4). Temperance is an independent woman who makes it clear on several occasions that she challenges the gender norms. The second main character is Seeley Booth a typical FBI agent. In this report, I will be discussing operating systems, management of information, security and application software within a school environment and personal use. The context of this report will be inclusive of my internal assessments of which I have completed at school, and at home. Operating software (OS) An operating system has the ability to manage both the hardware and software of a computer or device. It is the most important part of a computer and controls every action and task which is carried out. Computers and devices require both hardware and software for it to operate. Without one, you will not have a functioning machine. All desktops utilise operating systems, of which the software (or OS) is a collection of code installed onto the computer s hard drive and is intangible. It includes the computer programs, folders, files and documents. The internet browser, like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome that allows you to visit online web pages and the operating system that the browser is running on is considered software, while computer hardware is any physical device used in or with your computer or machine. Skirmish Board GameAnalysis Recently in class, we paired into groups of two to face off in an ultra realistic simulation as commanders of either the Americans or British during the American Revolution. By ultra realistic simulation, I mean board game. Nonetheless, Skirmish the board game, is a representation of what it was like to command the American troops or British troops. Through this experience, we learned how realistic it is, several factors that determine the outcome of the game, and about how best to command your troops. The Skirmish board game is a very realistic depiction of the Revolution in several ways. During the American Revolution, one of the characteristics of Washington s Army was its ability to move troops much faster than the British. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Skirmish board game also reflects the advantage George Washington had over the British thanks to the intelligence gained by American spies. This comes when the British player must declare which unit they are moving before they move it. This is like how the Americans almost always knew what the British were planning to do, before they did it. At the same time, the board game also incorporated the vulnerability of American leaders by using special American unit pieces with black dots. These pieces, representing the different heads of Washington s Army were to be protected at all costs, since they would be the determining factor between a win or a loss. Another example of the realism of the Skirmish board game was the fact that the British army was made up of five large blocks with the number five (to indicate the number of troops in that block) on them as opposed to the American units which were sixteen one piece units. This represents how tight knit the British army was during the American Revolution, as opposed to how split up the American army was. Overview of theWARN Act For so many years, this nation has been creating policies and laws to protect the people and their way of life. One particular law that was passed still creates a lot of confusion on whether this law pertains to them or not. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act is a federal law to protect workers, their families, and society from sudden or unforeseen job losses due to plant closings and massive layoffs. The WARN Act was originally enacted on August 4, 1988, but it evidentially became effective on February 4, 1989 (Department of Labor, 2013). The Department of Energy (DOE) concluded there were not enough sufficient benefits being offered to the taxpayers for them to extend the enrichment at the plant (USEC). With the increasing cost of production resulting from power consumption and the decreasing prices in nuclear fuel, the USEC felt that it was in their best interest to begin the process of layoffs in order to continue operations into the next year while trying to manage inventory, meet customer orders, as well as meeting the turnover requirements with the DOE on its lease (USEC, 2013). To prepare themselves, the USEC utilized the provisions of the WARN Act to properly commence with their scheduled layoff while providing proper notice to their employees despite the many years of excellent performance from its workforce. While the act may provide some control of policy, it can cause quite of bit of confusion for certain departments of the government. As discussed previously, the WARN Act provides businesses with a safeguard measure to utilize in the event of a shutdown or mass layoffs, but for the federal government, many questions came about in light of the recent furloughs and shutdowns. I do. I remember putting on a mask and feeling powerful and confident. I think the same thing happens with Jack and his war paint transition. War paint gives Jack power. In the novel, as soon as Jack changes his face using war paint, many members of Ralph s tribe step up to follow jack in his new tribe. Jack checked, vaguely irritated by this irrelevance but too happy to let it worry him. (Golding 69). This quote helps show that Jack is not a good leader. He cares more about what he wants than what the whole group wants making him the most irresponsible character in the book. With Ralph actually being the most responsible character in the book ,He is definitely the rightful chief but as we later learn, the right chief doesn t always get picked. Another example of Jack not being responsible as a leader was when the circle chant took place. All at once, Robert was screaming and struggling with the strength of frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing his knife. Behind him was Roger, fighting to get close. The chant rose ritually, as at the last moment of a dance or a hunt. (Golding 114). This quote explains that if Jack were a proper leader he would not have let poor Robert almost get killed. Jack didn t even try to stop the feeding frenzy that was the hunters. My parents who were trying to find a way to distract my 5 years old mind turn on the tv, and there I was admittedly taken on a journey to a magical place where I was safe in the knowledge that every ending is happy ever after. (this is an extended metaphor where I compare Disney to the real world I used this to show the reader how I thought the world was as happy and perfect as Disney and television makes them out to be). I soon came to the realization that the world is not so happy after all. I got out of the car and walk into the doors of my new school, I was like Nemo when he got taken away from his home and got put into a completely new environment, (I use this simile to compare how nervous and scared I was going to a new school.) I continue to be hopeful and started to introduced myself to everyone, I was lucky enough to find my best friend in that class, but not everyone was as welcoming as she was to me, I started to notice that people were being really distance from me, and I couldn t put my finger on it. Knowing that you are not alone, that is something. They endure the hardships and loneliness of their everyday lives and end their day amongst people such as the older waiter, who take pity on them because they have experienced the very same feelings.
