WHAT IS CHEMICAL
ENGINEERING? Chemical engineering is a discipline influencing numerous areas of technology. In
broad terms, chemical engineers conceive and design processes to produce,
transform and transport materials — beginning with experimentation in the
laboratory followed by implementation of the technology in full-scale production.
Chemical engineers are in great demand because of the large number of industries
that depend on the synthesis and processing of chemicals and materials. In addition
to traditional careers in the chemical, energy and oil industries, chemical engineers
enjoy increasing opportunities in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, electronic device
fabrication and environmental engineering. The unique training of the chemical
engineer becomes essential in these areas when processes involve the chemical or
physical transformation of matter.

• Prof. Krishna Deo Prasad Nigam is the First
Chemical Engineer from India to get the
prestigious Humboldt Research Award in a
ceremony held on March 15,2013.
• The award is granted in Recognition of a
researcher’s entire achievements to date to
academics whose fundamental discoveries,
new theories, or insights have had a
significant impact on their own discipline and
who are expected to continue producing
cutting-edge achievements in the future.
• The award was instituted initially in the year
1972 for USA scientist only latter in 1982, it
was open world wide. The first award came
to India in the year 1994 i.e., after 12 years of
its inception.
• Prof. Nigam is very actively involved in the
research activities for energy conservation
and development of cleaner and greener
technology for environmental safety. Ha has
developed an innovative design of Heat
exchanger called as “ Coiled Flow
inverter ” based on novel concept of flow
inversion, which has potential foe multi-
disciplinary applications in the process
industry such as, inline mixer, chemical
reactors, separation process, and mass
transfer applications.
• Mukesh Ambani is one of the richest
people in India, and it's all thanks to his
studies in chemical engineering and
tenacity. He began his career in at his
father's company Reliance Industries in
the 1980s after dropping out of his MBA
program, helped build the company
from the ground up and even headed
the construction of a plant for
petrochemicals. Ambani eventually took
over its operations and helped expand
its product offerings.
• The face of new emerging India,
Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani is the
chairman and managing director (CMD)
of Reliance Industries which has earned
the reputation of being one of the
largest private sector enterprises in
India, a Fortune 500 company, and one
of the largest private sector
conglomerates in the world. He is the
• Raghunath Anant Mashelkar, also known
as Ramesh Mashelkar, (born 1 January 1943) is
an Indian Chemical Engineer, born in a village
Mashel in Goa and brought up in Maharashtra.
He is a former Director General of the Council
of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He
was also the President of Indian National
Science Academy (2004-2006), President
of Institution of Chemical Engineers (2007) as
also the President of Global Research
Alliance (2007-2018). He was also first
Chairperson of Academy of Scientific and
Innovative Research (AcSIR). He is a Fellow of
the Royal Society, Fellow of the Royal Academy
of Engineering (FREng), Foreign associate of
US National Academy of Engineering and the
US National Academy of Scinces.
• Dr. Mashelkar has received several awards and
is a member of numerous scientific bodies and
committees.
• Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award
(1991).
• Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian
award (2000).
• Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest

  • 16. • Prof. Krishna Deo Prasad Nigam is the First Chemical Engineer from India to get the prestigious Humboldt Research Award in a ceremony held on March 15,2013. • The award is granted in Recognition of a researcher’s entire achievements to date to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future. • The award was instituted initially in the year 1972 for USA scientist only latter in 1982, it was open world wide. The first award came to India in the year 1994 i.e., after 12 years of its inception. • Prof. Nigam is very actively involved in the research activities for energy conservation and development of cleaner and greener technology for environmental safety. Ha has developed an innovative design of Heat exchanger called as “ Coiled Flow inverter ” based on novel concept of flow inversion, which has potential foe multi- disciplinary applications in the process industry such as, inline mixer, chemical reactors, separation process, and mass transfer applications.
  • 17. • Mukesh Ambani is one of the richest people in India, and it's all thanks to his studies in chemical engineering and tenacity. He began his career in at his father's company Reliance Industries in the 1980s after dropping out of his MBA program, helped build the company from the ground up and even headed the construction of a plant for petrochemicals. Ambani eventually took over its operations and helped expand its product offerings. • The face of new emerging India, Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani is the chairman and managing director (CMD) of Reliance Industries which has earned the reputation of being one of the largest private sector enterprises in India, a Fortune 500 company, and one of the largest private sector conglomerates in the world. He is the
  • 18. • Raghunath Anant Mashelkar, also known as Ramesh Mashelkar, (born 1 January 1943) is an Indian Chemical Engineer, born in a village Mashel in Goa and brought up in Maharashtra. He is a former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He was also the President of Indian National Science Academy (2004-2006), President of Institution of Chemical Engineers (2007) as also the President of Global Research Alliance (2007-2018). He was also first Chairperson of Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), Foreign associate of US National Academy of Engineering and the US National Academy of Scinces. • Dr. Mashelkar has received several awards and is a member of numerous scientific bodies and committees. • Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award (1991). • Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award (2000). • Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award (2014).
