Throughout the years, literature has often been used as a means to spread social
critique. When it unfavorable or even dangerous to publicly speak out against the
society of the time, the written word can act as a shield. Adding a mask of fiction
to these novels allows the author to get their message out to the public who
otherwise would not take the time for such issues. Two novels that exemplify this
social critique behind a thin layer of fiction are Looking Backward by Edward
Bellamy and Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Both of these novels offer a
critique to certain aspects of American society during the time period, and do so in
very similar ways. Each of these novels, Looking Backward and Herland, depict
utopian societies in order to fully illustrate the issues that the authors see in their
current society. Although the issues being addressed may be different, the way
Bellamy and Gilman discuss them contain numerous parallels. Ranging from the
cause of these utopian societies, to the mindset of the individuals living in them, both
novels are very similar in their approach to social critique of America. Even the
differences between the two are caused by common reasons. These parallels show the
underlying format used by both Bellamy and Gilman that allowed them to identify
the flaws in American society and offer solutions to them. One such parallel found

language and literary devices. Emily Dickinson uses many different poetic devices
in her works to help convey her themes. In her poem My Life Closed Twice Before
Its Close, Dickinson discusses that fact that her life has already metaphorically
closed twice before. This is most likely a reference to the two past lovers that she
had. Her experience with unrequited love inspired her to write this poem, and we
can infer the theme through her use of different literary devices and figurative
language that she uses in her poem. Adding to the theme of unrequited love,
Dickinson also wrote her poem If You were Coming In The Fall to discuss the fact

the fact that she lost both of the people that she cared about most. Most likely this
poem is in reference to her lover that was married and then died. Through the use of
poetic elements, we can draw conclusions like these to understand her goal in writing

The Upside Down Kingdom by Donald B. Kraybill is a book filled with confusing,
upside down stories and views. His book repeats many things about Jesus and how
maybe he turned things upside down. This book added new things for me to think
about when reading the Bible and how confusing it was for the people listening to
Jesus.
The main point or thesis of The Upside Down Kingdom is that there are social and
political views that are confusing for many people back when Jesus taught the
people, but even now when we read the Bible and Jesus stories. A major sub point to
this is that Jesus did things that were upside down and that many did not
understand. For example, Donald B. Kraybill uses the story of the women using
her expensive perfume on Jesus in chapter seven. He says All writers (except Luke)
report that the onlookers condemned this waste of a year s wages (pg. 124). They
wondered why she was not selling it for money, but Jesus tells them that there will
always be poor people around them. Yet He will not always be with them. Jesus turns

Donald B. Kraybill repeats this a lot in the book. He talks about many ways of
how Jesus broke rules or maybe just what people thought were the right things.
One example Donald repeats a lot is the issue on the poor and rich. The people
back then and even people today would say congrats to the rich for working hard
and then say the poor need to work harder. Yet the book tells us Jesus, in upside
down fashion, awards the poor and spanks the comfortable (109). Another topic
that is brought up is Jesus telling his disciples to sell their clothes and buy swords
at the Last Supper. Along those lines, in Matthew 10:34 when Jesus said Do not
suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace,
but a sword . This can be upside down because Jesus is supposed to be loving and
caring yet he wants

In the mid nineteenth century, many new poets were writing and publishing their
works. Poets were influenced when Romanticism was the trend of the day in
America. Emily Dickinson differed, her poetry was heavily influenced by the
Metaphysical poets of the seventeenth century England. Dickinson suffered from
depression. Her poems not only reflected her feelings, but everyday subjects such as
her dreams. Dickinson draws large amount of inspiration from aspects of her life such
as the people she met.
Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. The people
that were part of her life were an enormous impact on her poetry. Her parents were
Edward Dickinson and Emily Norcross. Her mother suffered a long term illness and
needed constant care from her daughters. Dickinson s father attended Yale College
until Junior year, which he went to Amherst College. Edward became Amherst s
chief citizen and a successful lawyer, this gave his children the opportunity to meet
many prominent visitors. Dickinson s older brother was William Austin and she
also had a younger amicable sister named Lavinia Norcross, she was her longtime
companion and advocate of her work after her death, ( Dickinson, Emily ). Leonard
Humphrey, her principal at Amherst Academy, was a mentor and a friend to
Dickinson. Humphrey influenced her poetry. When Humphrey died, Dickinson was
