I read The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, a 250 page novel published on October 1,
1996. This book can be classified as realistic fiction, but is considered to be a
romance novel due to the heart pulling plot line of two star crossed lovers. My
attention was caught quickly when I saw this book, because I had watched the
movie with my girlfriend which motivated me to read it. It took me about three
days to read behind Mrs. Kosters desk, each day during the same week; it was a quick
and easy read. This work was completely fiction; however, Sparks was inspired by
his wife s beloved grandparents. They had spent over sixty years together, with their
story being shared with Sparks and his wife, inspiration from their lovemade its way
into the book. Noah comes back, after fighting in World War ll, to his home in New
Bern, Carolina. Where he spends his days building a house to distract himself from

Mexico was one of the main points of the conquistadors conquest. Mexico was home
to two of the biggest Pre Colombian civilizations, the Aztecs and the Mayans. The
Mayans and Aztecs both faced the wrath of the conquistadors, as they were both
conquered very easily due to the Spanish s advanced weaponry. After conquering the
natives, the Spanish would rule over that land for anout 300 years. This new ruling
came with new foods, races, animals, and changes that effected the natives.
One of things that was brought to Mexico during the Colombian Exchange, although
unintentonally, was disease. The Spanish brought diseases such as smallpox, measles,
tuberculosis, and mumps. These were diseases that the natives had not been exposed

advanced weaponry than the natives, it was the diseases that wiped out most of the

detail, and tone to show the changes Estrella s character goes through to figure out
how beneficial it is to know what the letters in the alphabet looked like in order to
be able to read and to be interested in wanting to read.
Viramontes uses figurative language like similes and metaphors to show Estrella s
frustration with her lack of understanding of the world around her her teachers and

themes, but one that really stands out above others is the effects of ignorance. One
would disagree with my choice of theme, but one must not be so rash with their
disagreement, first you must look at the writing techniques and the choiceof words
that Lahiri uses in the excerpt. The ignorancein which I talk about circulates around
Bibi s family. If Lahiri describes her events in chronological order, which I believe
