Introduction to quantitative and qualitative research
This presentation, delivered in an Open University CALRG Building Knowledge session, gives a preliminary introduction to both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. There has been widespread debate when considering the relative merits of quantitative and qualitative strategies for research. Positions taken by individual researchers vary considerably, from those who see the two strategies as entirely separate, polar opposites that are based upon alternative views of the world, to those who are happy to mix these strategies within their research projects. We consider the different strengths, weaknesses and suitability of different approaches and draw upon some examples to highlight their use within educational technology.

It allows researchers to gain a deeper understanding of a phenomenon by using the strengths of both quantitative and qualitative research. There are three main types of mixed methods designs: qualitative-quantitative, quantitative-qualitative, and concurrent quantitative-qualitative. Mixed methods research provides an opportunity for quantitative and qualitative data to inform and enhance each other.

However, it also presented challenges, such as subjects experiencing drug withdrawal during interviews, becoming malicious without warning. The researchers had to take precautions and balance overt and covert roles with different levels of relationships within the group to overcome issues.

Mixed methods research combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis in a single study. It allows researchers to gain a deeper understanding of a phenomenon by using the strengths of both quantitative and qualitative research. There are three main types of mixed methods designs: qualitative-quantitative, quantitative-qualitative, and concurrent quantitative-qualitative. Mixed methods research provides an opportunity for quantitative and qualitative data to inform and enhance each other.
Descriptive research

There are different forms of ethnography like realist, which objectively reports realities from a third-person perspective, and critical ethnography, which advocates for marginalized groups and challenges existing power structures.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 2. Using These Slides These PowerPoint slides have been designed for use by students and instructors using the Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity textbook by Conrad Kottak. These files contain short outlines of the content of the chapters, as well as selected photographs, maps, and tables. Students may find these outlines useful as a study guide or a tool for review. Instructors may find these files useful as a basis for building their own lecture slides or as handouts. Both audiences will notice that many of the slides contain more text than one would use in a typical oral presentation, but it was felt that it would be better to err on the side of a more complete outline in order to accomplish the goals above. Both audiences should feel free to edit, delete, rearrange, and rework these files to build the best personalized outline, review, lecture, or handout for their needs.
