• NEBULA
A nebula (from Latin: "mist"; pl. nebulae or nebulæ,
with ligature or nebulas) is an interstellar cloud of
dust, hydrogen gas and plasma. It is the first stage of
a star's cycle. Originally nebula was a general name
for any extended astronomical object, including
galaxies beyond the Milky Way (some examples of
the older usage survive; for example, the
Andromeda Galaxy was referred to as the
Andromeda Nebula before galaxies were discovered
by Edwin Hubble). Nebulae often form star-forming
regions, such as in the Eagle Nebula. This nebula is
depicted in one of NASA's most famous images, the
"Pillars of Creation". In these regions the formations
of gas, dust and other materials 'clump' together to
form larger masses, which attract further matter,
and eventually will become big enough to form
stars. The remaining materials are then believed to
form planets, and other solar system objects.

Depending on its mass, a star may live from about
a.1 million to 10 million years.

Write 476,000,000,000,000 km in
scientific notation
• It’s EASY! Just make the BIG number smaller by making
it a number between 1-9 (with decimals if needed) and
write down your power of 10 (the number of times you
moved the decimal)

Astronomers typically measure
distances to stars in units called
______________
• Light years
Cool Fact
A light nanosecond -- the distance light can
travel in a billionth of a second -- is about 1
foot (about 30 cm). Radar uses this fact to
measure how far away something like an
airplane is. A radar antenna sends out a short
radio pulse and then waits for it to echo off an
airplane or other target. While it's waiting, it
counts the number of nanoseconds that pass.
Radio waves travel at the speed of light, so the
number of nanoseconds divided by 2 tells the
radar unit how far away the object is!

A loose grouping of a few thousand

• OPEN CLUSTER
An open cluster is a group of up to a few thousand stars that were formed from the
same giant molecular cloud and have roughly the same age. More than 1,100 open
clusters have been discovered within the Milky Way Galaxy, and many more are
thought to exist.[1] They are loosely bound to each other by mutual gravitational
attraction and become disrupted by close encounters with other clusters and clouds of
gas as they orbit the galactic center, resulting in a migration to the main body of the
galaxy as well as a loss of cluster members through internal close encounters.[2] Open
clusters generally survive for a few hundred million years. In contrast, the more
massive globular clusters of stars exert a stronger gravitational attraction on their
members, and can survive for many billions of years. Open clusters have been found
only in spiral and irregular galaxies, in which active star formation is occurring.[3]
A light-year is ______________
• The distance light travels on one year.
• 1 light year = 5.87849981 × 1012 miles
• Let’s move that decimal and find out how
many miles it REALLY is…
• 5,878,499,810,000 miles

__________________.
• PULSAR
A neutron star is about 20 km in diameter and
has the mass of about 1.4 times that of our Sun.
This means that a neutron star is so dense that
on Earth, one teaspoonful would weigh a billion
tons! Because of its small size and high density,
a neutron star possesses a surface gravitational
field about 2 x 1011 times that of Earth. Neutron
stars can also have magnetic fields a million
times stronger than the strongest magnetic
fields produced on Earth.

  • 2. All stars begin as part of a large cloud of gas and dust called a(n) ____________________. • NEBULA A nebula (from Latin: "mist"; pl. nebulae or nebulæ, with ligature or nebulas) is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen gas and plasma. It is the first stage of a star's cycle. Originally nebula was a general name for any extended astronomical object, including galaxies beyond the Milky Way (some examples of the older usage survive; for example, the Andromeda Galaxy was referred to as the Andromeda Nebula before galaxies were discovered by Edwin Hubble). Nebulae often form star-forming regions, such as in the Eagle Nebula. This nebula is depicted in one of NASA's most famous images, the "Pillars of Creation". In these regions the formations of gas, dust and other materials 'clump' together to form larger masses, which attract further matter, and eventually will become big enough to form stars. The remaining materials are then believed to form planets, and other solar system objects.

  • 9. Astronomers typically measure distances to stars in units called ______________ • Light years Cool Fact A light nanosecond -- the distance light can travel in a billionth of a second -- is about 1 foot (about 30 cm). Radar uses this fact to measure how far away something like an airplane is. A radar antenna sends out a short radio pulse and then waits for it to echo off an airplane or other target. While it's waiting, it counts the number of nanoseconds that pass. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, so the number of nanoseconds divided by 2 tells the radar unit how far away the object is! click here for light year info

  • 18. A loose grouping of a few thousand stars is called a(n) • OPEN CLUSTER An open cluster is a group of up to a few thousand stars that were formed from the same giant molecular cloud and have roughly the same age. More than 1,100 open clusters have been discovered within the Milky Way Galaxy, and many more are thought to exist.[1] They are loosely bound to each other by mutual gravitational attraction and become disrupted by close encounters with other clusters and clouds of gas as they orbit the galactic center, resulting in a migration to the main body of the galaxy as well as a loss of cluster members through internal close encounters.[2] Open clusters generally survive for a few hundred million years. In contrast, the more massive globular clusters of stars exert a stronger gravitational attraction on their members, and can survive for many billions of years. Open clusters have been found only in spiral and irregular galaxies, in which active star formation is occurring.[3]

  • 20. A spinning neutron star is called a(n) __________________. • PULSAR A neutron star is about 20 km in diameter and has the mass of about 1.4 times that of our Sun. This means that a neutron star is so dense that on Earth, one teaspoonful would weigh a billion tons! Because of its small size and high density, a neutron star possesses a surface gravitational field about 2 x 1011 times that of Earth. Neutron stars can also have magnetic fields a million times stronger than the strongest magnetic fields produced on Earth. http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/know_l1/pulsars.html
