The
Internet
 The internet is a worldwide system for
linking smaller computer network
together.
 Users can access any information,
regardless of the type of computers they
have, because of standard protocols that
allow computers to communicate with
each other .
 When you make a connection to the
internet you enlist the help of four
communication services: your computer,
the ISP, the server (host computer), and
the telecommunications network
(communication software and a modem
and phone or cable modem).
 Your computer the client) runs
communications software. your modem
and communications software provide an
open path between your computer and
your ISP. the ISP provides you a link to
the internet.
 Most information is shared without charge
except for whatever access fee is required
to maintain an account with an internet
service provider (ISP). such as America
Online and the local and community ISPs.
 Both telephone companies and television
cable companies provide high speed
access to the internet. Integrated services
digital network lines provide speed up to 5
times that of a regular analog phone lines.
 digital subscriber line (DSL) provide even
faster access.
 The internet connects thousand of
computers networks worldwide. it
provides users with several basic types of
connections services:
 Electronic mail (e-mail) for person to
person communication.
 A type of electronic, public bulletin board
enabling a person to connect with a group
interested in the same topic.
 Information search capabilities for
accessing libraries and data bases of
information throughout the world.
 “live” communication, allowing individuals
on the internet to “chat” or “talk” in real
time, as quickly as they can type their
massages.
 Audio and video based communication
through software such as iChat ,yahoo.
 Each individual internet user has a unique
address. an internet address contain three
parts: the persons name and or username
, the computer network where he or she
can be reached and type of organization
he or she is part of .
 gatep@seas.edu

. Public places to use thephones
Internet include libraries and
Internet cafes
 High-end mobile phones such as smart
phones generally come with Internet
access through the phone network. Web
browsers such as Opera are available on
these advanced handsets, which can also
run a wide variety of other Internet
software
Marketing
 The Internet has also become a large
market for companies; some of the
biggest companies today have grown by
taking advantage of the efficient nature of
low-cost advertising and commerce
through the Internet, also known as e-
commerce. It is the fastest way to spread
information to a vast number of people
simultaneously. The Internet has also
subsequently revolutionized shopping
Social impact
 The Internet has made possible entirely new
forms of social interaction, activities and
organizing, thanks to its basic features such as
widespread usability and access.
 Social networking websites such as Facebook
and My Space have created a new form of
socialization and interaction. Users of these sites
are able to add a wide variety of items to their
personal pages, to indicate common interests,
and to connect with others.
 WHAT IS THE INTERNET SOCIETY?
 The Internet Society is the international
organization for global cooperation and
coordination for the Internet and its
internetworking technologies and applications.
 WHO ARE ITS MEMBERS?
 Its members reflect the breadth of the entire
Internet community and consist of individuals,
corporations, non-profit organizations, and
government agencies.
WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?
 Its principal purpose is to maintain and extend
the development and availability of the Internet
and its associated technologies and applications
- both as an end in itself, and as a means of
enabling organizations, professions, and
individuals worldwide to more effectively
collaborate, cooperate, and innovate in their
respective fields and interests.
