Oceania consists of islands east of the Philippines and south of Japan. The islands fall into two types - high islands formed from volcanoes that are better suited for agriculture, and low islands that are drier and more vulnerable to tropical storms. The islands are divided into three geographic groups: Melanesia whose inhabitants have dark skin, Micronesia consisting of small islands, and Polynesia comprising many islands.
