The document discusses ceramic-faced aramid laminated composites for ballistic protection. Zirconia toughened alumina ceramic is used on the impact face with aramid fiber composites as backing. Ballistic testing was conducted with 7.62mm armor piercing projectiles. The ballistic limit increased for composites with ceramic faces compared to standalone composites, due to energy absorption from ceramic fracture and projectile deformation. Composites with thermoplastic polypropylene matrix backing performed better than epoxy matrix backing, absorbing more energy through higher flexibility and delamination. High-speed video showed the interaction sequences.
