Planning and early implementation of California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) Zero-Textbook-Cost Degrees (ZTCs) program shifted into full-scale implementation in January 2018, with a total of 23 colleges developing full degree and certificate pathways that have eliminate textbook costs for students. ZTCs include two-year associate degrees and career technical education (CTE) certificates that have been redesigned by faculty to use open educational resources or zero-cost materials.
Join us to hear from the leadership driving this program forward. The lead at the state Chancellor’s office will describe the vision of the program and plans for future innovation. Technical assistance providers from College of Canyons and West Hill College Lemoore will share details of the training and evaluation programs supporting the transformational work at the participating colleges. The chair of the statewide Academic Senate OER Task Force will describe the essential role of faculty adoptions in maximizing the impact of ZTC degrees throughout our state.

Students Creating and Submitting Digital Presentations Using PanoptoKonstantina Martzoukou
With the current shift experienced in Higher Education towards micro-learning, flipped and blended classrooms, class recordings may involve different types of activities in addition to lecture capture. For example, staff may use recordings for walk-through demonstrations, practical sessions, revision activities, and assessment overviews. In addition, recordings may be used for non-teaching purposes, such as course orientation, guest talks and resources designed to support students’ accessibility, widening participation, inclusivity, belongingness and study flexibility. However, there can also be student-led recorded presentations, which help students to develop a range of professional skills, such as effective presentation, team-work and digital literacy skills. The recording of student presentations may also help to simplify moderation and quality assurance processes.
This session focuses on how the AUA Behaviours Framework has been applied to the continuous personal and professional development of Library Services staff; enabling staff to understand and respond fully to the individual needs of an increasingly diverse student body. Students are supported wholeheartedly by staff on their journey from pre-university to alumni. The Library Service has involved students with innovative service developments and works closely with student representatives. Staff and students jointly play their part in the community through active engagement in valuable and mutually beneficial partnerships.

Last June, Achieving the Dream (ATD) announced the largest initiative of its kind to develop degree programs using high quality open educational resources (OER) at 38 community colleges in 13 states. The program is designed to help remove financial roadblocks that can derail students’ progress and to spur other changes in teaching and learning and course design that will increase the likelihood of degree and certificate completion.
Grantee colleges have been busy this summer and fall developing OER courses and planning the delivery of their OER Degree programs with cross-functional teams of stakeholders including faculty, librarians, administrators, and other staff.
Grant partners Lumen Learning, the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER), and SRI International are providing technical assistance, community of practice, and research support to grantees
Come and hear from a panel of four college leaders on their early successes, lesson learned, and challenges ahead in rolling out OER Degree programs to students over the next few years. Topics include fostering faculty and administrator engagement, effective professional development, creating awareness among students, measuring outcomes, and creating sustainable policies.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Flexible Learning Environment Competency-based Progression
Students will become confident learners and citizens. They
will:
▪ Develop self-awareness, social awareness, responsible
decision-making, and self-management in order to
establish positive relationships and capably handle
challenging situations.
▪ Learn to work collaboratively with others and self-direct
their own learning.
▪ Acquire an academic growth mindset in order to effectively
communicate, collaborate, persevere, respond to different
learning environments, and express creativity.
A flexible learning environment allows students to learn at
various times and places within and beyond a traditional school
day and building, through a blend of instructional methods
designed to meet individual academic needs. This includes:
▪ Flexible scheduling: Each student’s schedule may be
different based on interests, learning style, and pace. The
schedule changes as students progress in attaining
competencies.
▪ Anytime, Any Place Learning: With a flexible and self-
directed schedule and options for instructional settings,
each student is able to learn anytime and anywhere,
opening up possibilities for reimagining learning time and
space.
▪ New Staff and Student Roles: Teachers become
facilitators of learning, while students have greater choice
and ownership over their learning and work.
Competencies are targets for student learning representing key
concepts and skills applied within or across content domains.
Competencies enable flexibility in the way that credit can be
earned or awarded, and provide students with personalized
learning opportunities.
▪ Learning goals are the same for all students, but students
progress through material at different speeds according to
their learning needs.
▪ Teachers and school administrators use a data-driven,
digital approach to measure student progression and
provide support as needed to meet competencies.
▪ Academic supports are provided to students who struggle
to attain competencies.
The curriculum is organized around competencies, which are
Common Core Standards-aligned. Educators collaborate to
align, design, and analyze rich, engaging, and relevant projects
and performance tasks that measure the depth at which
students learn content and apply complex skills to create or
refine an original product and/or solution. These assessments
are used to:
▪ Enhance learning
▪ Assess students’ attainment of competencies
▪ Guide teachers’ daily instruction and larger revisions of
curriculum
▪ Make high-stakes decisions related to progression and
graduation.
Students engage in a variety of instructional methods,
including blended, project-based, and small group learning to
attain success in their personalized learning plans. Among
them are:
▪ Use of new technology, digital resources, and learning tools
▪ Small group instruction, assisted and independent from
the teacher
▪ Project-based learning in which students engage in in-
depth research to investigate a complex question or
problem
▪ University courses
▪ Community-based learning, including apprenticeships,
internships, and community service
An academic profile is created for each student. The profile:
▪ Describes the student’s learning style, strengths,
challenges, passions, and interests.
▪ Helps teachers evaluate the assets and needs of individual
students
A personal learning plan is derived from the profile, focused
on pursuing the student’s passions and interests, while also
addressing the student’s learning challenges. The plan
includes learning opportunities that match the student’s
learning style.
