Cells are the basic unit of life and come in two main types - eukaryotic cells with a nucleus like plant and animal cells, and prokaryotic cells without a nucleus like bacteria. All cells contain organelles that carry out specific functions to keep the cell alive. Animal cells are usually round and contain organelles like the nucleus, mitochondria, and endoplasmic reticulum. Plant cells are usually square shaped and contain everything in animal cells plus chloroplasts and a cell wall. Bacterial cells are smaller and simpler than plant or animal cells, lacking a nucleus but containing DNA, a cell membrane, and ribosomes.
