  • Animal and Plant Cells

    1. 1. Plant and Animal Cells “A Closer Look”
    2. 2. What is a cell? All plants and animals are made up of cells. Cells are the basic unit of all living things.
    3. 3. Cell Parts
    4. 4. Cell Membrane- Holds the cell together and lets substances pass in an d out of the cell.
    5. 5. Cell Wall- Found mainly in plant cells but not in animal cells. It gives a stiff and rigid shape to the cell.
    6. 6. Chloroplasts- Are organelles found mainly in plant cells. They contain chlorophyll, a chemical the allows plants to store solar energy.
    7. 7. Chromosomes- Are structures inside the cell nucleus that are made up of genes. Genes carry the code for a cell’s traits and activities.
    8. 8. Cytoplasm- Watery gel inside of a cell. Many materials are dissolved or suspended in the cytoplasm. Various organelles are found in the cytoplasm.
    9. 9. Mitochondria- Are organelles in which energy is released in the form of food.
    10. 10. Nuclear Membrane- Allows substances to pass in and out of the nucleus.
    11. 11. Nucleus- Controls the cells activities
    12. 12. Vacuoles- Are spaces in the cytoplasm where food and chemicals are stored.
