3. Operating Model
Small independent production company in the UK, they have many ways of being funded to make the
money for their films. Some of these ways are:
• Initial Capitalisation
This is where companies get a set amount of money to fund their film production. They get this money
from, bank loans, personal finance and credit cards for film makers. They could also get funding from
film finding body like, Screen West Midlands, Lottery and many more.
• Project Capitalisation
Instead of being set up with a production fund, companies may attract finance from those same sources
for certain projects. Companies may also reinvest money from previous projects if there are any funds
left to spend.
• Co-funding and partners
Companies will work with other companies to co-fund a project, many small independent UK
companies do this to get a films in production when they can’t fund it by themselves.
• Distribution fees
Companies may sell their films to distributors before they have even finished the film, the distributor is
then guaranteed a final product, some companies like Film4 Production and BBC films will use matching
funding, this acts like the distributors paying up front, then retaining the distribution rights to the
product.
• Licensing
Small companies will do deals with big production companies, in return for a small some of money the
small companies will give the big companies first refusal to develop or distribute their projects.

5. Market Position
The marketing is all about advertising the film, getting it out there, then it
leads to a good first few week in sales. This helps to overcome the other rival
TV and Film companies, good sales means more popularity, so more people
will watch what this company makes in time to come.

6. Competitors
Celador films production is successful even though it has only made 7 films in a 10 year period.
It’s competitors are:
DNA Films- A British production company founded by Duncan Kenworthy and Andrew Macdonald
Film4 Productions- A British film production company owned by Cannel Four Television
Corporation.
Sony pictures entertainment- A television and film production company owned by the Japanese.
Celador are very big in the UK, which is a big achievement, however compared to some of the big
Hollywood film companies they are nothing. They don’t have the millions of pounds like
Hollywood, so this is why when a big film is going to be produced, they would rather go to a
company which can fund a lot more for their film than having a quarter of what they would
possibly need to make the next big film. But Celador can fund some what a decent amount of
money to the a big film, for example Slumdog Millionaire a film which won lots of awards and
was the must watch film of they year in 2009.
