An OER EcosystemWhere people can take and adapt contentWork in harmony with others to grow new and vibrant content And continue the cycle of growth and expansion and increased sharingCreating new and interesting ideas
OER Enablers such as technologies like the internet allow forvirtually unlimited storage in databases Nearly Ubiquitous accessEasy ways to shareANDNew IP licenses through Creative Commons make it legal to do so.
Allow people to cooperatively construct resources and put them in places where others can freely use, remix and repurpose them for their needs. This is exactly what Connexions has been doing for the past 14 years
Non-profit open-education authoring platformfounded in 1999 at Rice University1300 open textbooks/collections21000 Lego modulesA module is small knowledge chunk, like a section in a bookfrom contributors worldwidein 40+ languagesmillions of users per monthfrom 190 countries90 million uses of STEM contentAll content is free for anybody to accessThere is no login or password to access the content. All content is CC-By and which means that anyone can take this content and modify it to meet their needs, and Connexions provides a simple system to make these derivatives.
People are choosing to use Connexions because of the flexibility that the system offers.-It gives people an editing interface where you can import word docs, open office and even LaTeX files…And we are working in partnership with Google to make the import even easier.. New tools will allow people to import Google docs and even blogs.Content in Connexions is automatically available in many formats… PDF
Web
iPad, android and other mobile devices It is even available on low-tech feature phones via a mobile web server. You can even purchase print on demand bound printed copies of the book through one of our POD partners.Case Study with Collaborative Statistics.Written by Barbara Illowsky and Susan Dean and foothills-de anza community college in California, The Maxfield Foundation bought the copyright from the author and gave it to Connexions. It was converted in 2008 and since then it has received over4 million Uses to date on the webLike all content on Connexions the book is available on ipad/iphone/android PDF and websiteIn-print for about $26.
How do we get here?Well to be honest it hasn’t been incredibly easy up until now,It required using very techie tools and dealing with code.
Thanks to a partnership with Google and the Shuttleworth Foundation as well as additional funding from the Hewlett Foundation and Open Society FoundationsWe are building an new and improved version of ConnexionsMuch of our focus was take Connexions current proof-of-concept repository, automatic output formats and authoring tools and elevate that experience to new extremely user-friendly, cloud-based, OER authoring platform
Where you can write something once, and share it everywhere through many different formats.
And going back to the theme of unlocking the power of OER, the connexions library now comes pre-populated…Using these new tools you can create customized version of OpenStax College’s professionally developed texts for your courses.Eventually there will be OSC books for 25 texts for the most popular college course, You have the freedom to create adapted version of these books.
