How Fragmentation Will Impact On Ecosystem Function
Introduction
Following the advance of civilization, large forests are completely degraded, eliminated and
converted to other types of land use on all continents. However, small pieces of forest are left on
areas that are of little use owning to their adverse topography or poor drainage, or other reasons.
When discussing the human impact on forests (Ledig 1992). Ledig and Kitzmiller (1992) listed
fragmentation of forest as next in line after complete destruction degradation and loss of genetic
diversity in forest area. Defined as an unbroken expanse of primary forest greater than 500 km2
without significant human activity, intact forest landscapes comprise only 29.9% of the world s
remaining tropical forests (Gibson et al., 2011). This surviving fraction is rapidly being broken up
and fragmented (Wright, 2005). This raises the urgent question of how fragmentation will impact
on ecosystem function, the essential set of processes which maintain tropical forest ecosystems
(Laurance et al., 2011).Ecosystem function can be defined as the processes that collectively
contribute to the self maintenance of an ecosystem
Owning to the species richness of genetic diversity particularly of tropical rain forest with a high
proportion of endemics (Vianaet al. 1997), the number of species being strongly affected or
becoming vulnerable and extinct is larger than in other biomes. Owning to local rarity or
pronounced clumping of species occurrence, many species may be missing from any

Plessy Vs Ferguson Analysis
1. Plessy v. Ferguson was decided after a period of time where African Americans were granted
more rights and freedoms under the law. During Reconstruction (1865 1877), African Americans
were allowed to hold public office and vote. Some areas of the South had African American
communities that were economically sufficient. After reconstruction ended, the white man s
government resumed upon the withdrawal of Northern troops and the assistance of the Freedmen s
Bureau. Jim Crow laws were passed that placed African Americans in a second class citizenship.
This flip flop between no rights (slavery), Reconstruction era rights, and no rights again (Jim Crow)
is justifiably frustrating.
The frustration with separate but equal 1896 continued until 1954 when the Brown v. BOE. 1954
marks the beginning of the contemporary Civil Rights Movement. During this time conditions in
the South had come to the point of separate but equal was blatantly not equal and social justice
organizations like the NAACP were pushing harder for justice not only with segregation but all
aspects of injustice in American life. There hadn t been a legitimate enforcement of the equal
protection clause of the 14th amendment in the South for over 77 ... Show more content on

Law and the implication of justice are not out of the reach of everchanging societal conditions. The
changing racial climate of both years did affect the court s decisions. Both cases have an argument
grounded in the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment. Is the required use of separate
facilities by members of different races in violation of the 14th amendment of the US Constitution?
African Americans in 1896 were not seen as full citizens but as second class citizens whose
facilities should reflect their second class status. Simply put, the court rationalized the
constitutionality of separate but equal by saying that legislation cannot change public perception
and that the state had power to do what is best for public

Stalin Famine Of 1932 Research Paper
Treatment of the peasantry worsened under Stalin, the famine of 1932 could have been averted
or at least intercepted at an early stage to lessen its impact but food shortages reappeared and
from 1932 1934, it had caused around six million deaths. Conquest claims when it came to the
terror famine of 1932 1933, he denied that it even existed so how could intervention have been
possible. Stalin s process of dekulakization followed while he pretended there really was a class
of affluent peasants which led to the death of millions through execution and starvation, quality of
life was not a concern. Borrero even goes as far as to say the famine of 1932 1933, was purposely
exacerbated by the authorities to break the resistance of peasants to the

Domestic Violence Effects On Children Essay
Domestic violence affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men (NCADV, 2015). Although the devastating
effects that domestic violence has on women are well known, there is a population of domestic
violence victims that we tend to overlook. These are the children of the women and men who are
in domestic violence situations. Children are the invisible victims when it comes to domestic
violence. There are many statistics being thrown around when it comes to the number of children
who are exposed to domestic violence; they range from as little as 200,000 to even 3 18 million
(Sousa et. al., 2011). A 2001 study discovered that in 75% of the cases in their study, children were
present in the home during the assaults (Hutchison Hirschel, 2001). Until recently, there have been
limited studies focused on the effects of exposure to domestic violence on children. This paper will
review various literatures that identify the effects of domestic violence exposure on children. There
were many trends in the literatures that were studied but there were two common trends worth
mentioning. The first trend was the participants that were used in the studies. Many of the
literatures mention that previous studies mainly gathered information from women and children
who resided in battered women shelters. The second trend was the methods used for the studies.
Many of the studies used surveys and interviews where women and children self reported on their
experiences. There were many common conflicts in the

Summary Of Alzheimer s Disease By Elizabeth Cohen
Daddy had Alzheimer s disease. Mother couldn t take care of him, her sister couldn t, obviously
she had to take him in... Wouldn t you? In 1998, Elizabeth Cohen s father had come down with a
sever case of Alzheimer s. Her mother would call and conference with her and her sister, telling
them of his rapid degeneration. The way she describes her parents love story was almost fairytale
like. They ate together, laughed together, and so on. Everything was perfect except for one thing;
her mother hated kids. Elizabeth had, what she describes to be, a vexing and confusing childhood.
Her mother kept her at bay from her father, and mother seemed to merely put up with her kids
rather than take motherly care of them. Elizabeth s dad or Daddy had been... Show more content on

She spent so much time taking care of Daddy that Ava s time with her was somewhat neglected.
Ava would find things, she would fall on the stairs, Daddy found some scissors and dropped
them on his foot (Cohen 37). Daddy accidentally lights a fire in the trash can in his room (Cohen
74). No one could say that this was a safe arrangement. She was running ragged, barely having
time to take care of herself. It s hard to find more positives in this scene. Shane eventually comes
back, but would he have stayed if Daddy had not come. Did he sign up to take care of a mindless
old man, and his daughter at the same time? How much say did Shane really have? She was in
fact, a little ambiguous as to whether the decision was discussed in detail. And not only was Ava
slightly neglected, but there were several instances where Daddy might lose control of his bowels
or wander the house; not very good situation for a single mother and

Acute Appendix Pain
The most likely diagnosis for this severe abdominal pain located within her right lower quadrant
and amongst her right side would be an acute appendicitis due to inflammation of the appendix.
The appendix is located within the right lower quadrant (RLQ) of the abdomen, and finds itself
within the right iliac (inguinal) region. It is a subdivision of the large intestine and is a blind ended
tube attached to the posteromedial surface of the cecum (Marieb, Hoehn, Human Anatomy
Physiology, 2016). The appendix is approximately four inches long and roughly a quarter of an
inch in diameter in which resembles a worm; therefore, the alternate name vermiform (worm like)
appendix was allocated. The wall of the appendix consists of an inner circular, ... Show more

Computed tomography images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels provide
greater detail than the average x ray (Marieb, Hoehn, Human Anatomy Physiology, 2016). To
diagnose an appendicitis, it can be seen after a CT scan that an inflamed appendix can be larger
than 6mm in diameter and has appendiceal wall thickening and enhancement after contrast media
infusion (Wijesuriva, 2007). Ct scans can also reveal further periappendiceal inflammatory changes

If the absent parent does not comply I will make sure they suffer the consequences, and

they will see how I was growing up and how its important to be there for your child. A child

two parents to make it work. Just because the parents are divorced or they broke up does not mean
that the absent parent has to stop coming around or even stop paying to help with the child. That
child is still your responsibility.
The career path I have chosen can bring me fulfilment by being able to get families back on
track. The more I m successful in my job the more motivated I will be to contiune and grow and
get better. I will be the one who defends the child or teen, and I want them to have the best care
from there absent parent. I also want to get the parent to pay the child support, and be apart of his or
her life. Its not all about the money the child likes to know that they are loved by there parent. This
is important because it will show how much I care about the people in my community, and about

Government And Societal Ideas From The 19th Century
Government and Societal Ideas from the 19th Century During the 19th Century, three prominent
thinkers John Stuart Mill, Giuseppe Mazzini, and Karl Marx had their own ideas of an ideal
society. These individuals had their own unique view of the perfect society. However, they all
have something in common with their visions: all of these excerpts discussed an oppressive
entity. In all of the three ideal societies concocted by these men, tyrannical governments or
oppressive societies are obstacles to their visions. In the excerpt from John Stuart Mill s On
Liberty, he discusses the imperfection of democracy. He states that democracy was only a perfect
system when it was still a dream and not a reality. His reason for this imperfection is... Show more

Essentially, it is citizen s duty to protect their rights from the oppressive shadow of the opinions
of the majority. In the second excerpt, taken from his essay, The Duties of Man, Mazzini
discusses the means for an ideal society. He says that for an ideal society to exist the people
living in said society must work towards unification and nationalism. Mazzini states that man s
primary duty should be towards humanity and his their country. He said that this is what God
originally intended as a part of his Divine Design . He also says that this design God intended
was corrupted by greedy and oppressive Monarchies. Evidence of this can be taken from The
Duties of Man, They have disfigured it by their conquests, their greed, and their jealousy even of
the righteous power of others; disfigured it so far that, if we except England and France, there is
not perhaps a single country whose present boundaries correspond to that design (Mazzini 1860).
He later says the countries of unified people, defined by the vote of free men, will rise from the
ruins of traditional monarchies and that there will be harmony between this nations. For Mazzini s
ideal society to exist people must make it their duty to follow God s Divine Plan. He expresses
this in The Duties of Man, Our Country is our common workshop, whence the products of our
activity are sent forth for the benefit of the whole world; wherein the

Battle Of The Bulge Essay
The Battle of the Bulge
The battle of the bulge was Hitler s last chance to win the war or at least make the allies go for a
treaty. He did this because his forces were being pushed back into Germany and soon they would
run out of supplies and other resources for war. Hitler thought of this bold plan when he recalled
how a German hero Frederick the great was facing defeat, Frederick went on a offensive attack at
his foe who had superior numbers but the bold moved worked and Hitler thought he could do the
same thing.
The Battle of the bulge took place on December sixteenth 1944. More than a million men
participated in this battle including some 600,000 Germans, 500,000 Americans, and 55,000 British
which made it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was the place were they had great success against the French people in the beginning of the war.
The Germans also selected it because it was easy to hide troops in the hills which they did at the
first major offensive. Hitler code named this attack as the watch am Rein The Americans the area
were in a thin line because they wanted to give support to the flank were the attack was expected so
they thought.
During the War Eisenhower and his staff felt this spot was the least likely to be attacked. The
thought the Germans would not try any thing through the narrow passageway. The Germans
wanted the opposite of what the Americans wanted to do. As stated above the Allied troops were
resting and reforming; they consisted of General Simpson s 9th Army and General Hodges 1st US
Army in the north and General Patton s 3rd Army to the south. The Ardennes was held by General
Middleton who had the 8th US Army Corps, 106th and 26th Infantry Divisions and 4th and 9th
Armored Divisions.
The object of the German offensive was to push through the Belgian Ardennes, cross the Mousse,
retake Antwerp and its harbor facilities, thrust to the north and reach the sea which they almost
succeed in doing. This would cut off the Allied troops in Holland and Belgium, making it
impossible for them to withdraw. The success of the operation depended on three important

Introduction
Throughout everyday life, American s suffer a number of frustrations and delays; from waiting in a
doctor s office to standing in line at the grocery store. Historically, trafficcongestion is a common
annoyance throughout the United State and with the increase in population, overtime has gotten
much worse. In 2000, the average American driver endured 27 hours of traffic delays each week,
more than tripling the average of 7 hours spent in traffic delays in 1980 (Arnott). The need for
solutions and plans to construct highways and efficiencies has been a debate since the highway
construction began in the late 1920 s (Garber). Throughout history, engineers and politicians have
evolved the plans and solutions to help alleviate highway congestion throughout America.
Congestion
It is important to first comprehend what congestion is, the causes, how it is measured, and the
consequences of congestion in order to understand how overtime different solutions have been
successful in diminishing highway congestion.

Health Care Industry Analysis
Achieving the goal of providing safer, quality, improved, proportionate, and greater cost efficiency
to the entire population is the biggest challenge in the health care field today. Quality and safety are
the two most formidable issues that are compromising health care outcomes to the populace today.
To prevent harm to patients during their treatment, or from adverse events occurring; about 1% of
all hospitalizations, delivery of the best possible result, the knowledge of quality and safety patient
care should be at the forefront of the healthcare industry.

Adverse outcomes are not normal in nuclear power and aviation because the managing of risk is
so good, but in health care, they are prevalent. Several adverse events are often hidden, either on
purpose, or from the lack of informing the appropriate personnel. Whereas, some mistakes are not
obvious due to the poor health of the patient and are not uncovered until an investigation has taken
place, which is not a typical incidence. Due to the ordinary attainment of disease, it makes it
difficult to determine if the safety outcomes were due to negligent care or the natural course of the
disease.
Aviation and the making of nuclear power differ dramatically from the health care industry as in
how to maintain or repair a failed system. As Dr. Gaba (2013) noted, We do not design or
construct the units we work on: human beings nor are we given an instruction manual for them.
Another difference is there is only a temporary shutdown in aviation and nuclear power if an
adverse event happens, but in health care it can take up to ten years for professional practice
guidelines to be implemented and the introduction of lifesaving drugs and medical devices can be
delayed pending approval from the

Sexism in Television Commercials
Sexism in Television Commercials Many of us have seen a commercial and felt offended by the
sexist attitudes represented. It appears that on every channel, there is another television
commercial trying to sell its product with beautiful women. These commercials can range from
selling beer to selling cars (Sadiq). From sports to personal hygiene and home improvement
products. Almost every commercial has someone missing proper attire, or insinuating the other is
dumb or not as intelligent. These commercials make men and women feel degraded and ashamed.

But, some people see it as a joke and laugh it off. That s the thing about this advertising
campaign: The ads can offend and entertain in equal measures (McManis). Though on the
outside looking in, we would think something would be done about it. Many of the commercials
we see for home improvement products have the routine stay at home mom trying to figure out
a way to make her job easier. These include Glade, Scrubbing Bubbles, Clorox, and Swiffer. The
list could go on. In these commercials, the women are seen in the old fashioned way of they re
only good enough to clean and take care of kids. What about fathers who stay at home? Or the
working single mother or father who have the same responsibilities and more? These commercials
fail to show the reality of everyday life. No men are shown with these responsibilities, making it
seem as if they are incapable of such tedious duties.
Watching a football game, we can usually find an attractive young lady being swept off her feet
by a less attractive man after he opens his beer of choice. Or, if we re lucky, we can witness several
young women on a desert island with the male drinker after, of course he opens his can of beer.
These advertisements present women as a goal, a trophy if you will, that can only be attained with
the proper beverage. These women seldom have anything to say besides Yes making them seem like
unintelligent objects (Sadiq). This

Similarities Between Ancient Egypt And Ancient Athens
A Comparison of Societies in Ancient Egypt and Periclean Athens
Midterm Essay Maureen Cairns
In comparing and contrasting the societies of Periclean Athens and ancient Egypt, we must first
mention some of the characteristics of an actual society: a society has a stable food supply, social
levels and classes, specialization of labor, a system of government, and a highly developed culture.
Both the societies of ancient Athens and Egypt fit into these parameters. In this essay we will
explore social classes, gender relations, social inequality, and hierarchy as they apply to these
societies. Both ancient Athens and Egypt adhered to a strict hierarchical framework, ranking
people as superiors or inferiors. Old Kingdom Egyptian hierarchy is described as having the king
and queen at the top, with priests, administrators, governors and army commanders coming
second, then the commoners who worked mostly in agriculture, and finally, slaves, who had
been captured in war. (Hunt, pg. 22). According to Esolen, (pg. 35), Egyptian society was
structured as such: the Pharaoh came first, and was believed to be God on earth. Next came the
Vizier , who was the pharaohs chief advisor. Nobles were next in the hierarchy, responsible for
making local laws. Priests came next, and were responsible for performing rituals and
ceremonies. Scribes were a very important group, as they were the only ones who could read or
write, so they were the record keepers. A small percentage

The Resurrection Research Paper
It s not enough that the tomb is empty. It s not enough to proclaim, Christ is risen! It s not enough
to believe in the resurrection. At some point we must move from the event of the resurrection to
experiencing the resurrection. Experiencing resurrected life begins with recognizing the risen
Christ among us. That is the gift of Easter and it is also the difficulty and challenge described in
today s gospel.
The Gospel authors (especially Luke and John) go to great lengths to show that there s something
different about the resurrected Christ. Something so different that Mary Magdalene doesn t
recognize Jesus, and in fact mistakes him for the gardener, on Easter morning. And then the
disciples on the road to Emmaus talk about Jesus all afternoon ... Show more content on

The Gospels don t tell us what exactly was different about Jesus. Just that he is unrecognizable.
Until Jesus calls Mary by name, or until he breaks bread with the disciples. Then they came to
know that he is Jesus.
Very quietly, gently, the evangelists communicate something very important to us: something
happens in the resurrection which makes Jesus new. They are coy about the details. But, we don t
need the details to know that something is going on here.
But, one of the other things that the Gospel authors are also clearly intent on showing us, is that it
s really Jesus who rose from the dead. It s not a ghost. Not a spirit. Not a vision. Not a hallucination.
You can t reach out and touch a hallucination. Visions don t eat broiled fish. That new reality
begins with touching and seeing, flesh and bones, hands and feet, and broiled fish. Jesus said to
his disciples, Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost
does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have. Then he showed them his hands and his feet.
After this he ate a piece of broiled fish in their presence. After the resurrection of Lord Jesus A

What Is George Berkeley s Argument Against The View Of...
George Berkeley is a philosopher against the views of materialism. He presents his argument against
materialism using dialogues between two characters. The first character is Philonous, who is meant
to represent George Berkeley and his viewpoints that humans see nothing more than ideas. The
second character is named Hylas. Hylas is meant to represent the views of a materialist. A
materialist believes everything has a foundation in matter, and therefore humans see objects as they
are. In the first dialogue between Philonous and Hylas, they discuss their understanding of the
senses as related to matter. More specifically, they are in a debate about whether the senses are a
necessary part of matter. Hylas believes matter is a substance that exists without someone needing
to perceive it. Philonous believes matter cannot exist without someone having some mental
understanding of it, and in the event that no physical being is present to perceive... Show more

In their discussion, Philonous states that an object cannot be two colors at once and therefore
the color seen is based the viewer s perception. Hylas replies by stating that under ideal
conditions the object will be seen as one color, because that is the object s true color. Hylas
presents his objection to Philonous point that an object cannot be two things at once by getting
to the root of what causes beings to see color. Hylas argues that light is a material that interacts
with the mind to give a perception of some color. More clearly, the mind can only perceive
objects who possess qualities that can be understood through the senses. Hylas is arguing that
matter in itself has qualities that can be seen in different ways depending on the person, however
even if people have conflicting perceptions, the object will always possess its quality. For
example, in the case of the chair being seen as white or yellow depending on the person, under a
microscope the chair will always be one

Boston from 1850 to 1900 Essay
Brandee Meyer
Boston from 1850 1900 There was no time in Boston that was most emphasized, than the 1850 s to
1900 s. In the city of Boston there were a lot of changes that had occurred between the second half
of the 19th century, not only with the city but also with the people living in Boston. Boston has
always been changing and in transition.
Boston had changed majorly from being the merchant city to the industrial metropolis. The
population of people went up about Вѕ in 50 years of its physical change. When Boston was a

It was the same with the omnibus that was created in 1826, because it moved slowly and didn t
hold many people. The steam railroad was another form of transportation that was introduced in
1835 and it was a better form of transportation because it moved quicker and could hold many
more passengers, but it was also expensive and didn t always take the people to where they wanted
to go because it didn t stop very often, and only went one route.
There were land changes that occurred during the second half of the 19th century such as the South
End and the Back Bay. The South End was almost entirely taken up by houses in 1880 and then
went to the Back Bay that was almost completely taken up by houses in 1900. Only the rich could
afford to live on these pieces of land, because they were so expensive. Street railways were created
and they were the most aggressive expansion in the 19th century. From the 1880 s to the 1890 s
street railways took up at least six miles from City Hall in Boston. The service of the first railway
began in 1852. The first street railway in Boston would go between Harvard Square, Cambridge,
Summerville, and Union Square. The increase in the street railway brought excitement for the
entrepreneur s as well in other cities in America. Eventually the street railways replaced the

Pep Rally Argumentative Essay
Based on the criteria we set as a class, I determined that the Pep Rally went successful. A Pep
Rally is where we compete against other grade levels in order to win a prize. The prizes are
homework free for a week and having a week to listen to music during lunch. Although, in order
to receive this prize you must win the break down. A break down is when we stomp on the floor
to make sick beats. Each grade level gets a turn to participate the break down in other words,
who ever stomps the loudest wins! The criteria that I used to evaluate the SGMS Pep Rally was
Energy, Loud, Good Music, Games, and Performances/Visitors. One reason why the Pep Rally
went successful is Energy. Although, teachers didn t seem to have that much energy at the Pep
Rally. But, the whole students had a lot of energy they just wanna go KABOOM. During, the Pep
Rally students were jumping on the bleachers cheering for their Team. Also, teachers and students
were screaming saying their favorite quote THIS IS OUR HOUSE !!!. Lastly, students were
stomping as Loud as thunder where they can make their team better than any other grade levels.
Another, reason that the Pep Rally went successful is Performances or Visitors. Now we didn t
have any Performances or Visitors that came to SGMS because in my opinion I think maybe their

Beverage Choices Of Bottled Water Essay
We are a 24/7 on the go society who wants convenience in our beverage choices . Kim E. Jeffery,
CEO of Nestle Waters North company, made this comment in representation of the largest leader in
the bottled water industry. It is no wonder how bottled water became so popular in our society.
Healthier than soda, bottled wateris conveniently stored in a lightweight, disposable, plastic
bottle. Bottled water sales started when Perrier glass bottled water came overseas to America in
the late 1970 s and in 1989, water was available in PET plastic bottles (Tapped). Now everywhere,
bottled water can even be found in high school cafeterias while there are water fountains located in
nearly every hall. However, there is an opposing view to the product with names such as Ice
Mountain, Aquafina, Dasani, Sam s Choice, and Acadia. Through research, bottled water is known
to carry human pollutants, exceed other natural resource costs, and take part in a large portion of
plastic waste, all in a sixteen ounce plastic bottle. Although bottled water is convenient in only a
few cases, public education and legislation are necessary because of the human pollutants, costs,
and waste.
Bottled water is becoming such a growing industry because it does show to be convenient in
some cases. As Kim E. Jeffery states, Bottled water provides a healthy alternative at a time when
obesity is a growing problem ( Success ). With companies like Coca Cola, Pepsi, and Nestle, bottled

Jorge Research Paper
Jorge has to be my most favorite person in the world. I met him in July of the year 2000. Jorge is
the total package; he is handsome, charming, funny and smart. Did I mention how handsome he
is? Those gorgeous golden brown eyes, his beard with a mixture of black and red hair, and those
plump lips are just to die for. Jorge continues to amaze after all these year. He continues to be
everything he was when we met and so much more. He truly is a man like no other; heaven sent,
superman, a super dad and a super husband. Have you ever felt like God sent you your own
personal Angel? Jorge came into my life when I needed him the most. I was young and dumb,
making bad life choices and he was mature and ready to settle down. He never judged me for my
past mistakes but instead encouraged me to want better for myself. His acceptance showed me
what a big heart he had and allowed me to trust him. He helped me get my life back on track and
stuck by my side through the good and the bad. There s not a day that goes by that I don t thank
God for putting Jorge in my life. Jorge works twelve hour shifts, anywhere from four to six days a
week. His job is both mentally and physically demanding. It amazes me that with all the hours of
hard labor he puts in at work that he still manages to get things done around the house. From tiling

The Objectivity Of Science And Science
The objectivity of science would be contingent on our trust in the scientists who are feeding us
knowledge. We often believe these scientists, but is there actually a reason for us to trust what they
are passing on to us? What would science be if they had not been telling the truth? There is no
denying the existence of public trust in the words of scientists, but it should be noted that
everything that we understand as scientific fact today would be in question if we lost trust in our
scientists. Teachers of science, doers of science, and scientific writers are most definitely the source
of the majority of our scientific knowledge. We have to trust these people though because if we do
not trust them, who do we trust?
The main point I am ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And if so, is being virtuous and moral enough of a reason for us to confirm our trust in the
reliability and authority of science? Could it not be the case that scientists are seen as ordinary
people possessing extraordinary knowledge as a result of their job title or description? The fact
that we have this widespread trust of science proves that we must believe to have an understanding
of what scientists are like.
There has been a long going development of a public image of scientists, one that has recently
begun to change. Due to factors such as the internet and the media, science is something that is able
to been seen and looked into simultaneously by numerous people. When a scientist intentionally
fudges their data, it is not small news. Problems of this sort have birthed various concerns about
science, and about science s authority and reliability in specific. This speculation of dishonest
scientists not only will effect the reliability of science in the eyes of the public, but also the realm
in which scientists are producing truly credible knowledge. Our technical knowledge is only as
secure as the moral economy in which it is produced (Shapin, ?). As of now, the way in which
scientists come to agree or settle disputes, is an issue that we cannot fully grasp.
This skepticism of scientific objectivity appears to be the cause of a number of our fundamental
contemporary dilemmas regarding the morality and authority of science. As long as scientists

Essay on Campaign Finance Issues
GENERAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION
We are not a democracy, yet we do have a voice in our own government. Elections are the choice
microphones for many citizens. There on Election Day, they have the right of making their voices
heard; however, many interest groups and a few individuals seem to have a louder voice due to
campaign financing:
No U.S. official should be beholden to one or a few groups. And no group or individual should
have a greater claim on our elected leaders than any other. That s the way it should work. But it is
growing clear to more and more Americans that it doesn t (McCarthy 24).
Recently, it has been the trend to try to make sure the opinions and concerns of minorities are duly

Money is the most degrading, corrupting force in American politics today (McCarthy xi).
The idea behind fundraising for elections was a success at first, giving donors another way to
voice their opinions and open up the doors for communication once the elected officials fully
realized who they owed their position to. However, this went too far. Those whose candidate did
not win were left with an official who will accept the ideas of a past donor before any others. This
favoritism, while beneficial to certain donors, proves damaging to others. Also, when before, all
donated and spoke their mind, now only certain groups and people donate and not even all of them
speak their mind. The individual doesn t count anymore (McCarthy 25).
THE HYPOTHESIS
Now that I have given about three pages of background information on the political processes, now
would be a good time to introduce my Representative. Ken Bentsen represents the 25TH District
of Texas. He is a democrat and has served as representative since 1991. I actually have a few
theories regarding the reasons he voted the way he did and why certain groups financially
supported his campaign. Scholars for thousands of years have pondered the question of whether it
was the chicken or the egg, which came first. In the case of campaigning and finance, such seems to
be the question. Because voters had the opportunity of watching his career before 1996, it s
practically impossible to be able to tell

The Cry Of The Children
The Cry Of The Children and The Art of Incitation
Veering from the egocentric poems of the Romantic era, Victorian poets began to write poetry not
only to express the feelings of an I, but also to inspire change in the collective we. Being from a
historical period with a dramatic class divide, Victorian poets wrote with the intention of crafting
beautiful lasting poetry as well as articulating a need for cultural reform in their now. One of the
most renowned Victorian poets, Elizabeth Barrett Browning possessed the expert skill of
integrating not only imagery and precise rhyme scheme into her poetry, but afflicting her readers
with a sense of pity so paramount they had no choice but to make a change.
After having read a government report exposing the heinous working conditions of child laborers in
mines and factories, Browing began an impassioned campaign of awareness using her best medium
of expression: the written word (Norton 421). Utilizing an uncomfortable and confrontational
rhythm never before used by either her Romantic predecessors or Victorian contemporaries,
Browning creates a vehement emotional plea in The Cry of The Children so powerful that it is
credited with pushing the British parliament to pass new laws regulating child labor.
The speaker in the poem does not hold accusations back for even a moment igniting the thirteen
stanza imploration with the lines, Do ye hear the children weeping, O my brothers, / Ere the
sorrow comes with years? (1 2).

Earth And Venus Similarities
There are a total of eight known planets in our solar system which consist of four inner and four
outer planets; the four inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are known as the terrestrial
planets because not only are they the closest to the sun, but they are also Earth like, meaning that
they are similar to Earths composition and structure ( What is a Terrestrial Planet? ). While these
three planets bare close similarities, the planet that closely resembles Earth is Venus. Known as
the Sister Planets, or the Twins, Earth and Venus are said to share close similarities in relation to
their size, mass, density, composition, and distance from the sun ( Venus Compared to Earth
and Venus Information and Facts ). However, as Matt Williams (2016) suggests, while these two
planets may have been very similar early in their existence, just as with most siblings, as time
progressed, they began to change essentially transforming into two distinct, individual planets,
with very little in common. After the creation of the solar system, 4.5 years ago, Venus, just as
Earth, was said to have formed as gravity drew in a whirlwind of dust and gas ( Earth In Depth;
Venus In Depth ). Venus is the second planet from the sun (67,237,910 miles away), and the only
planet said to be named after a female the Roman goddess of love and beauty ( Planet Venus Facts
). On the other hand, as the only planet in the solar system not named after Greek and Roman gods

Magic Realism in Como Agua Para Chocolate
Magic realism
Magic realism (or magical realism) is a literary genre in which magical elements appear in an
otherwise realistic setting. As used today the term is broadly descriptive rather than critically
rigorous. The term was initially used by German art critic Franz Roh to describe painting which
demonstrated an altered reality, but was later used by Venezuelan Arturo Uslar Pietri to describe the
work of certain Latin American writers. The Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier(a friend of Uslar Pietri)
used the term lo real maravilloso (roughly marvelous reality ) in the prologue to his novel The
Kingdom of this World (1949). Carpentier s conception was of a kind of heightened reality in
which elements of the miraculous could appear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is controversy regarding the term magical realism because it is seen as a too limiting term
imposed on a post colonial nation by its previous rulers. Some also feel that what is considered
magic by the outside Anglo American or western critic is not viewed the same way by the native
writers.
This way of writing is based on the rational view of reality versus the acceptance of the
supernatural (Moore). Magical realism is usually associated with contemporary Latin American
fiction but it is also seen in the writings of authors from different countries (Lodge 114). The
unexplained fantasy in these works is used to depict historical convulsions and ... wrenching
personal upheavals that can not be otherwise described adequately in a realistic fashion (Lodge

Years of Solitude. The best known magical realism short story author however, is Jorge Luis
Borges. Although Latin American literature was predominantly written by males in the past, it is
becoming more diverse now with the voices of females, homosexuals, and Jews.
One such voice is that of Mexican writer Laura Esquivel who wrote Como Agua Para Chocolate.
First published in 1990, this novel has since been translated into thirty languages, won the

Choice Theory Vs Trait Theory Criminology Essay
Theories are a significant part of developing a body of knowledge within an academic discipline.
Within the domain of criminology, many theories have provided a foundation to stimulate the
growth of this area of study. The beginning of criminology began with individual level theories;
they focus on the perpetrator s individualistic features to answer the question of why crimeoccurs.
Two major theories that divide the individual level theories are choice theoryand trait theory. Both
contain various principles within their unit. Choice theory involves classical criminologywhile trait
theory relates to biological, psychological, and sociological determinism. These theories use
different approaches to explain why individuals commit crime. Before legal policies and penal
codes were developed, crime and punishment could be described as barbaric. The accused were
treated unfairly, cruel and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The majority of the crimes during this time were gruesomely reprimanded, and many times,
individuals had no knowledge that certain acts were illegal. Judges obtained far more discretion
than should have been allowed. Criminal acts were suggested to be caused by supernatural
happenings like Satan and demonic possessions. The first step away from such harsh system and
irrational crime provoking causes was with the development of classical criminology. In 1764, a
man soon to be named the father of modern criminology, Cesare Beccaria developed a criminal
justice system proposal which focused on aiding the people instead of the crown (Adler et al.,
2007). The views of crime and punishment drastically changed into the idea that crime should be
punishable to the extent of the crime committed. Classical criminology revolves around the idea

not to hurt them and give the economic support as well as the emotional support to grow up, in a
romantic relationship a women should be able to trust the man she is with as well as man should be
able to trust the women she is with. One thing that breaks trust in these relationships is abuse.
Abuse
Abuse varies in every relationship. Abuse can be physical, such as slapping, punching, using

Some abusers are uncomfortable with feelings such as, being lonely, sadness, embarrassment, or
even love. Abusers often get violent when they start to feel these emotions or when they start
running out of words to keep arguing verbally. Alcohol is proven to contribute to abuse. When a
person is drunk or had been drinking they tend to not be fully capable of thinking straight.
Drinking tends to make people lose their temper easier. When a parent is drunk it is best to leave
the house if possible, when a partner is drunk it is best not to argue especially if they tend to get
angry fairly easy.
Domestic Violence Each year, an estimated 30 percent of women who become homicide victims
die at the hands of men with whom they have a family (Thomson Gale, 2005, p. 21). People
blame the murdered women for not leaving the relationship. Unfortunately people do not realize
that most women that leave the relationship have a higher risk of being murdered at the time of
separation. They have a 75% higher risk of being murdered if they leave than the women that
stay. Men also are victims of domestic violence. In domestic violence men make up five percent
of the victims it has. A need of control leads abusers to act out violence. Every year, at least one
million women are physically, sexually, psychologically abused by their husbands, or common law
partners, two women are murdered by their male partners every week (Thomson Gale, 2005, p.26).

I have read 100% of the book in the past and 75% this time (some skimming).
What I enjoy most/least about the text. This is the second time I have read The Ragamuffin
Gospel by Brennan Manning (2005), and I still feel like it is a must read for any Christian. The
first time I read this book I remember being awed by God s Grace for ragamuffins and how that
relates to my interactions with people; when I showed God s grace, and when I did not. I still
remember specific times when God reminded me how much he loved the broken and how I could
be his hand outreached by being Jesus with skin on . I also remember specific times when I knew
God was directing me to love on someone, and I for one reason or another, I did not. The first
time I read Manning s book, I fell more in love with people because it helped get a glimpse of
how much God loved a ragamuffin. Now that I am older and life has been harder, I read
Manning s book in a different light. Unlike the first time, where I was reminded how much God
loves others; this time it reminds me how much God loves me! Even though my faith has faltered,
and I have had series of doubts and struggles with trust, God sill loves me. While reading the same
words I did several years ago I am seeing things differently.

Persuasive Essay On Bitter Fruit
It is not unknown the discrimination towards the black race, especially African Americans during

two African Americans were arrested after being suspects in a robbery, murder and rape case.
Nowadays Lawrence Bittler s photography has become an iconic image of lynching. Although it

Enlightenment And The French Revolution
Anarchy and poor leadership of the late 1700 s in France lead to the French Revolution. King Louis
XVI of France s reign lasted from 1774 to 1791, reflecting the ideas of monarchy and the divine
right. France s struggling economy forced the citizens to panic and increasingly urge to revolt
against the King. The citizens would not be influenced to revolt against their king without the
Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was a movement to protest against and question groups like
the Catholic Church and absolute monarchs because of their beliefs and control in society.
Philosophes such as Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Rousseau highlighted equality and the rights of man
helping create the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, ultimately leading to the ideas of
change during the French Revolution. The Enlightenment period had a vast impact on the
movements of the French Revolution through philosophes like Montesquieu, Voltaire, and
Rousseau.
Charles de Montesquieu was a nobleman and a member of the parlement of Bordeaux.
Montesquieu s ideas during the Enlightenment left a great impact on the French Revolution. He
protested against absolute power and monarchy. He also believed that there should be different

Cause Slower Heart Rates On Diabetes
cause slower heart rates [95]. We cannot rely solely on reduced heart rates only to diagnose
CAN because with advanced nerve dysfunction, heart rates can be normal [95] but it persists in
higher rates than patients without any diseases [96]. As a result, heart rate cannot be a reliable
factor to determine CAN; however, decreased heart rate is the primary manifestation of CAN
[95]. CAN is considered as a common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus that threatens
life of patients with diabetes [97]. Its worldwide prevalence varies from 1.6% to 90% [98].
Dysfunction of autonomic nerve fibers that regulate heart rate, cardiac output, myocardial
contractility, cardiac electrophysiology, blood vessel constriction and dilatation can be defined as
CAN [97, 99]. There are many cardiac disorders that are associated with CAN such as resting
tachycardia, intraoperative cardiovascular instability, arrhythmias, asymptomatic myocardial
infarction and ischemia and increased rate of mortality after myocardial infarction [97, 99]. CAN
is diagnosed by several clinical symptoms, such as postural hypotension, dizziness, light
headedness, presyncope, syncope and early fatigue and exhaustion during exercise; all of these
are demonstrated in later stages [98]. The first finding of CAN is, decreased heart rate variability
(HRV), which is a subclinical finding and can be diagnosed through deep respiration [100]. It can

overall, most airlines do not approve nail polish in the sky. Some other illegal polish uses are

Review Of Reconstruction And The Ride
Reconstruction and The Ride Media Journal by Nicholas Janković 8/10/14
In March 2008 and April 2012, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) released robust
television advertisements which investigated the welfare of motorcyclists on Australian roads.
The directors of these advertisements are stressing for motorcyclists to ride at the appropriate
speed limit in order to decrease the risks of a collision and to be aware of their vulnerability and the
risks they face every time they ride on the road. The directors also express the concern at the fact
that some riders aren t wearing the protective clothing while riding. The TAC addresses it perfectly
fair that motorcyclists are permitted to obey the speed limit. TAC also make it... Show more content

This numerical data shows that 17% of the road toll in 2013 were caused by motorcycle collisions.
As promoted in the television advertisements, motorcycles are urged to decrease their speed. In
2013, 43% of motorcycle deaths occurred due to the driver exceeding the legal speed limit.
Motorcyclists are encouraged to reduce their travel speed by 5km per hour in order to reduce road
trauma. Speeding over a minor amount of speed of 5km per hour, can still determine the difference
between a close call and a serious accident.
These advertisement adopt a cautious and fearful tone when outlining the welfare of
motorcyclists on our roads. The aim of the advertisement is to increase the welfare of
motorcyclists. The strong opinion enforced by the directors, convinces a broad number of
Australian motorcyclists that lowering their travel speed can be the difference between life and
death. Motorcyclists become aware of the fact that obeying the legal speed limit is absolutely
essential for their own welfare. In the advertisement The Ride , riders aren t wearing the
appropriate clothing needed when operating a motorcycle. Motorcycle clothing manufactures will
want to act immediately and decisively in order to advertise their products to encourage those
customers to purchase appropriate protective gear. The demand for motorcycle clothing is a benefit
for those manufactures as sales for protective gear are likely to increase.
The Reconstruction advertisement has placed a

The Fallen Hero Essay
The Fallen Hero Wake up, Riku, wake up. Who are you? Riku yawns while he slowly gets up.
Wake up, young hero, it is time for you to stand up to darkness once more. You have been in deep
slumber in this shrine for a hundred years. Walk out of the shrine to fulfill your destiny, said the
mysterious voice.
After the voice stopped, Riku got out of the sleeping chamber he was in. He walked out of the shrine
, and the first thing he saw after a hundred years amazed him. The shrine he came out of was part
of cliff covered with fresh, earthy grass, swaying back and forth as the wind blows. Then, Riku
started to look around the area and below the cliff there was big green oak tree forest. The sky was
clear, and the sun gave the sky Far away, he could also see that there was a volcano covered by
dark gray clouds.
Riku took a stroll down the path to the forest, and on the way he met an old man. The old man
walked towards him and he offered Riku to sit with him for a meal. Riku sat down, and the old
man handed him a grilled fish on a stick. Then, the old man started to talk to him. Young man, I
haven t seen you around here. It looks beautiful in this area doesn t it? This land isn t what it used
to be. There used to be people around here, and you see that teared down building over there? That
used to be a temple, said the old man. You should go check the torn down temple, you will find the
answer you seek, but be careful, there are monsters everywhere . After the man told

Exothermic Salts Lab Report
Analysis: The endothermic salts would not even function as hand warmers at all because they take
in energy from their energy in the form of heat. This means it will take heat away from whatever is
near it. That means, any hands near the endothermic salts will become colder, not warmer. The
exothermic salts, which are the salts give off energy, are LiCl, Na2CO3 and CaCl2.
The next important consideration is whether they give off enough heat to make sufficient hand
warmers. For 10 grams of the salt in 40 milliliters of water, the minimum temperature change must
at least 20 degrees celsius. As calculated above, only LiCl and CaCl2 meet the requirements.
After checking the sufficiency of the hand warmers, checking their safety is the next important ...

It is very difficult to get an exact amount measured for whatever substances is being used, in
particular the water. Measuring exactly 100 mL is difficult as seeing where the water is in the
graduated cylinder can be hard. Also, there is a possibility the magnetic stir bar could not have
stirred the solution fully or equally, causing a dissonance in temperatures and how the energy is
distributed throughout the solution. Finally, the mass we recorded could have slight
inaccuracies due to there being a chance grains of whatever salt we were using falling onto the
scale itself and not the weighting boat, causing the balance to show a heavier mass than what
there actual is. In the calculations, rounding and sig fig errors can be prevalent, though keeping
them as precise as possible is something I tried my best in doing. By using google sheets for the
calculations, there were less rounding errors, as the program will be able to keep as many values

Senior Year Of High School
Senior year of high school, while filled with excitement and anticipation, can be a stressful time
for those applying to college. Deciding on a college is not like buying a new pair of shoes; shoes
can be bought, taken home, and, if necessary, returned for something else. In this respect, colleges
are not so forgiving. While the option to transfer exists in theory, the expense of transferring and the
complicated logistics of transferring from one universityto another leave students with limited
options. High school seniors applying to colleges must think carefully about where they will be for
the next four years. There are countless factors that each must consider in evaluating a prospective
college, but each school s academics and social life are two important factors that must be
considered paramount. The University of Virginia(UVA) is one institution that offers top tier
academics and a vibrant social scene.
Academics are no doubt a major consideration when weighing universities; UVA is nationally
recognized for its academics, and it has long been competitive as the premier university in
public higher education. Any accredited university can award a degree, with varying levels of
prestige to be sure, but perhaps most pertinent in evaluating a college is the quality of the
education it has to offer. UVA has long been committed to investing in the quality of its
academics. Professors at major universities are notorious for caring almost exclusively about their
research and academic prestige, but at UVA, while undoubtedly committed to publishing first rate
research, professors are viewed as mentors. The value of this academic relationship cannot be
overstated; PhDs guarantee intellectual brilliance, but they do not always translate into good
professors. Professors at UVA regularly undergo formal instruction on pedagogy, meaning they
receive formal training to ensure that each professor is teaching for the sake of learning and not
just lecturing for the sake of fulfilling a job requirement. Not to be overlooked are the various
study abroad opportunities that UVA has to offer. In today s global economy, study abroad
opportunities offer unbeatable, invaluable experience. The UVA Class of 2017 had 1,378

What Is The Difference Between David And Dumas
When there is two well known books and in these stories there are two men that are placed to

chapters 16 through 18 not only wanted his success to be given to him by God. With those major
differences, they both share some qualities like their youth and many others. Alexander Dumas and

Old Courthouse Research Paper
Before the red sandstone building came to life, there was a county jail that opened in 1897.
Initially, the County of Orange bought land in 1893 from Santa Ana s founder, William Spurgeon,
with the intention to build a courthouse (ocparks). Originally, Orange Courthouse had no
courthouse. So, by July 1900, construction began through the use of architect Charles Strange s
drawings. They were selected specifically by the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
Successfully, the 1903 deadline was met considering it got completed by 1901 at a cost of
$117,000. This site is historical since it s the oldest surviving courthouse of Southern California,
and because of the significant cases that got decided at this courthouse such as: establishing laws,...

The Henry Ford McCracken case was heard in 1952, and became historically the longest trial in
the Old Courthouse (first floor of courthouse). He was convicted of kidnapping 12 year old
Patricia Jean Hull from a movie theater and into his cottage in Buena Park. Not only did he
sexually assault her, but killed her. For three years, the media was drawn to his escape of the gas
chamber, and was put to death on Feb. 19, 1954 at the age of 36 (ocregister). Agriculture is an
important California symbol so it is no surprise that there was a case held at the Old Courthouse
about agriculture known as The State of California Vs. The Irvine Company in the 1940s. The
Irvine Ranch considered its hundreds of employees as agricultural workers due to the fact that
they worked on a ranch. They really did mean all of their workers, even the bookkeepers, cooks,
and the rest of the office staff. The State of California sued in 1941 for back taxes after they
demanded the company to pay unemployment taxes on all their non agricultural workers.
However, the court ruled that majority of the Irvine s employees were agricultural workers by
1942. Aside from cases, the Old Courthouse has appeared in a variety of movies and TV shows.
The earliest movie and TV shows that were shot in or around the courthouse include: The File on

Jains Do Not Harm All Living Things
Jains believe that is no true god in the world. They believe if a perfect god created the world, why
would he have created an imperfect world? That isn t to say that the universe isn t consistently
changing. Jains believe that everything is eternal, but throughout time everything constantly
changes. They believe that two basic substances are mixed together that create the world: the jiva
and ajiva. Jiva is the soul and spirit, it senses and feels everything. Then there is the ajiva which
encompasses the other materials in the universethat doesn t have feeling or consciousness. It is the
belief of Jains that you should not harm anything or anyone because everything has a soul and can
feel. Jains do not eat meat or harm anything living.
Furthermore, their reason for not harming anything is that Jains believe that your soul will be
recycled through time and space for all of eternity; unless, you reach perfection which can be

Examples of Bias Aporach to History
Ever since the beginning of civilization starting with the beginnings of even Mesopotamia,
history has not only been biased but written by one type of people: the winners. Rarely in history
do the winners of a war or battle not write what had happened in their single point of view. The
losers are nearly always left out; they re side is almost never heard or even known to exist. The
three greatest examples of this bias approach to history are the actions of HernГЎn Cortes and the
destruction of the Azteccivilization and Tenochticlan, Ramses the second and his rule of Egypt and
conquest of the Middle East, and lastly Julius Caesarand his domination of both Rome and the
Mediterranean Sea. These three men and their actions are prime examples of the writing of history
only being done by those who victor and succeed. They went and defeated their enemies allowing
no other perspective but their own to be written in history; whether it was the Aztecs, the Hittites or
the German barbarians, no other mindset was heard other than the winners. From the beginning of
civilization to end of civilization, only the winners of a conflict will write history and will
determine what the future knows. One of the greatest examples of history being written by the
winners is by the Spanish conquistador HernГЎn Cortes. HernГЎn Cortes and his small army of
men are held in history for not only defeating the large and expansive Aztec empire but also
destroying their city of

Ralph Ellison and Stereotypes Essay
Stereotyping is a normal part of every one s life. Humans, by nature, classify things. We name
animals and classify them by common characteristics but stereotyping can have negative
repercussions, and everyone does it. In a recent study it was proven that everyone has an
unconscious need to stereotype (Paul). In Junteenth and The Invisible man, Ralph Ellison argues
that stereotyping can cause mayhem by making the people become something they are not.
People are forced to by society s views to be something they are not. The Invisible man is forced by
society to be a well mannered boy, even after they treated him like black trash calling him things
like nigger and made him undress, with other boys around his age, in front of them. Then when ...

People become what society wants them to be. In Juneteenth Bliss conforms for this older, and
in his eyes wiser, man who has raised him as his own. He even becomes a preacher under
Hickman, and assists hickman in church services, if he wants to or not. There are things that
Bliss wants to do but he doesn t because Hickman has taught him not to. For an example, he
wants to go to the movies but Hickmans theory is that when people watch movies they lose
touch with who they are supposed to be, Bliss. (Juneteenth p.223) The ironic part of this line is
that Hickman is telling Bliss he is going to lose himself if he doesn t listen, and conform to what
he is saying, which makes him lose himself entirely. Bliss even becomes so brainwashed by
Hickman that he preached about how the white man has stopped them, and him from doing things
and taking away their rights making them feel Eyeless, tongueless, drumless, danceless, hornless,
songless (Juneteenth p.123), while he is/will be a white man. Hickman makes Bliss into what he
believes to be the perfect person but he makes Bliss into something he did not want to be. In The
Invisible Man, the invisible man conforms to society all throughout the book he had been
conforming to society from the very beginning, he goes to college because he is told that that is
where he should be, his grandfather s words haunted him, following him everywhere he went and
everything he did he knew that he had to kill them with kindness. He

The Myth Of Endometriosis In The Human Body
If one breaks down endometriosis, one will find that it means an abnormal condition of the lining
inside a uterus. Specifically, the tissue that is inside the uterus will form on an external structure.
This has unpleasant consequences when a tissue made for a certain region of the body is acting
elsewhere. This condition will mainly affect women and young ladies during their most
reproductive years and can affect them both physically and mentally (Reich et al., 2016). Even
though most cases are, it is a myth that endometriosisoccurs exclusively in women over twenty
years of age. This disease can begin in a body as soon as the female obtains her first menstrual cycle
and will unfortunately persist over a lifetime in the body unless an act of... Show more content on

The basal layer of the endometrium produces the external functional layer, and if the basal layer
is not removed, then the disease will continue to grow back. This is why laparoscopic excision
surgery is the optimal treatment for endometriosis. This procedure will act to remove the
deepest layer of the endometrium like tissue. Reich et al. (2016) mentions that receiving a
hysterectomy is not the best way to get rid of this condition, even though a large majority of
people have come to believe this is true. As previously discussed, endometriosis can spread to
areas other than reproductive organs, so pain will persist even after removal of the entire uterus.
Pain killers, oral contraceptives and IUDs are common methods for pain treatment and slowing
the disease. However, as soon as one is eligible for the diagnosis of endometriosis, laparoscopic
surgery to remove all layers of disease should be amongst the top considerations to rid the body of
this abnormality, for it has proven to be the most

Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress Summary
The novel, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai SiJie is about two boys, the narrator
and his friend Luo. Along with other with other youths of China, they were both sent down to the
country side during the Cultural Revolution of China to be re educated. At the time anyone that had
high school education were considered intellectuals and were considered as a threat to the cultural
movement. However, the narrator or Luo only had middle school education and were considered
intellectuals. One big reason why they were sent down was because their parents were considered
intellectuals and they were paying the price for it. During their time in the country side, Luo falls in
love with a seamstress and throughout the novelshe is referred... Show more content on

Since love was a very foreign idea to them, it influenced them to become more interested in
western book, which did not include any propaganda. When the narrator reads Jean Christophe a
book by Romain Rolland, he talks about the main character fondly Without him I would never
have understood the splendor of taking free and independent action as an individual. Up until
this stolen encounter with Romain Rolland s hero, my poor educated and re educated brains had
been incapable of gasping the notion of one man standing up against the whole world (110).
This is the main reason why Mao didn t want people reading any kind of literature that was not
connected to the party or scientific. Books such as the one the narrator read inspired people
which can motivate then to rise up against his dictatorship and lead to his loss of power. When
talking about the main character from the Balzac Ursule Mirouet novel, the narrater sates I
longed to be like her: to be able, while I lay asleep on my bed, to see what my mother was doing
in our apartment five hundred kilometers away, to watch my parents having supper, to observe
their gestures...better still, like Ursele, I would visit, in my dreams, places I had never set eyes on
before... (58 59). From this passage it can be seen how disillusioned the youth of China were due to
the re education process. Another key reason why Luo and the narrator were so interested in the
books was because they could relate to the stories. They were able to picture it happening to
themselves which in a way gave them an escape from their reality and the fact that they might

  • 2. How Fragmentation Will Impact On Ecosystem Function Introduction Following the advance of civilization, large forests are completely degraded, eliminated and converted to other types of land use on all continents. However, small pieces of forest are left on areas that are of little use owning to their adverse topography or poor drainage, or other reasons. When discussing the human impact on forests (Ledig 1992). Ledig and Kitzmiller (1992) listed fragmentation of forest as next in line after complete destruction degradation and loss of genetic diversity in forest area. Defined as an unbroken expanse of primary forest greater than 500 km2 without significant human activity, intact forest landscapes comprise only 29.9% of the world s remaining tropical forests (Gibson et al., 2011). This surviving fraction is rapidly being broken up and fragmented (Wright, 2005). This raises the urgent question of how fragmentation will impact on ecosystem function, the essential set of processes which maintain tropical forest ecosystems (Laurance et al., 2011).Ecosystem function can be defined as the processes that collectively contribute to the self maintenance of an ecosystem Owning to the species richness of genetic diversity particularly of tropical rain forest with a high proportion of endemics (Vianaet al. 1997), the number of species being strongly affected or becoming vulnerable and extinct is larger than in other biomes. Owning to local rarity or pronounced clumping of species occurrence, many species may be missing from any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Plessy Vs Ferguson Analysis 1. Plessy v. Ferguson was decided after a period of time where African Americans were granted more rights and freedoms under the law. During Reconstruction (1865 1877), African Americans were allowed to hold public office and vote. Some areas of the South had African American communities that were economically sufficient. After reconstruction ended, the white man s government resumed upon the withdrawal of Northern troops and the assistance of the Freedmen s Bureau. Jim Crow laws were passed that placed African Americans in a second class citizenship. This flip flop between no rights (slavery), Reconstruction era rights, and no rights again (Jim Crow) is justifiably frustrating. The frustration with separate but equal 1896 continued until 1954 when the Brown v. BOE. 1954 marks the beginning of the contemporary Civil Rights Movement. During this time conditions in the South had come to the point of separate but equal was blatantly not equal and social justice organizations like the NAACP were pushing harder for justice not only with segregation but all aspects of injustice in American life. There hadn t been a legitimate enforcement of the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment in the South for over 77 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Law and the implication of justice are not out of the reach of everchanging societal conditions. The changing racial climate of both years did affect the court s decisions. Both cases have an argument grounded in the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment. Is the required use of separate facilities by members of different races in violation of the 14th amendment of the US Constitution? African Americans in 1896 were not seen as full citizens but as second class citizens whose facilities should reflect their second class status. Simply put, the court rationalized the constitutionality of separate but equal by saying that legislation cannot change public perception and that the state had power to do what is best for public ... Stalin Famine Of 1932 Research Paper Treatment of the peasantry worsened under Stalin, the famine of 1932 could have been averted or at least intercepted at an early stage to lessen its impact but food shortages reappeared and from 1932 1934, it had caused around six million deaths. Conquest claims when it came to the terror famine of 1932 1933, he denied that it even existed so how could intervention have been possible. Stalin s process of dekulakization followed while he pretended there really was a class of affluent peasants which led to the death of millions through execution and starvation, quality of life was not a concern. Borrero even goes as far as to say the famine of 1932 1933, was purposely exacerbated by the authorities to break the resistance of peasants to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Domestic Violence Effects On Children Essay Domestic violence affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men (NCADV, 2015). Although the devastating effects that domestic violence has on women are well known, there is a population of domestic violence victims that we tend to overlook. These are the children of the women and men who are in domestic violence situations. Children are the invisible victims when it comes to domestic violence. There are many statistics being thrown around when it comes to the number of children who are exposed to domestic violence; they range from as little as 200,000 to even 3 18 million (Sousa et. al., 2011). A 2001 study discovered that in 75% of the cases in their study, children were present in the home during the assaults (Hutchison Hirschel, 2001). Until recently, there have been limited studies focused on the effects of exposure to domestic violence on children. This paper will review various literatures that identify the effects of domestic violence exposure on children. There were many trends in the literatures that were studied but there were two common trends worth mentioning. The first trend was the participants that were used in the studies. Many of the literatures mention that previous studies mainly gathered information from women and children who resided in battered women shelters. The second trend was the methods used for the studies. Many of the studies used surveys and interviews where women and children self reported on their experiences. There were many common conflicts in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Summary Of Alzheimer s Disease By Elizabeth Cohen Daddy had Alzheimer s disease. Mother couldn t take care of him, her sister couldn t, obviously she had to take him in... Wouldn t you? In 1998, Elizabeth Cohen s father had come down with a sever case of Alzheimer s. Her mother would call and conference with her and her sister, telling them of his rapid degeneration. The way she describes her parents love story was almost fairytale like. They ate together, laughed together, and so on. Everything was perfect except for one thing; her mother hated kids. Elizabeth had, what she describes to be, a vexing and confusing childhood. Her mother kept her at bay from her father, and mother seemed to merely put up with her kids rather than take motherly care of them. Elizabeth s dad or Daddy had been... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She spent so much time taking care of Daddy that Ava s time with her was somewhat neglected. Ava would find things, she would fall on the stairs, Daddy found some scissors and dropped them on his foot (Cohen 37). Daddy accidentally lights a fire in the trash can in his room (Cohen 74). No one could say that this was a safe arrangement. She was running ragged, barely having time to take care of herself. It s hard to find more positives in this scene. Shane eventually comes back, but would he have stayed if Daddy had not come. Did he sign up to take care of a mindless old man, and his daughter at the same time? How much say did Shane really have? She was in fact, a little ambiguous as to whether the decision was discussed in detail. And not only was Ava slightly neglected, but there were several instances where Daddy might lose control of his bowels or wander the house; not very good situation for a single mother and ... • 7. Acute Appendix Pain The most likely diagnosis for this severe abdominal pain located within her right lower quadrant and amongst her right side would be an acute appendicitis due to inflammation of the appendix. The appendix is located within the right lower quadrant (RLQ) of the abdomen, and finds itself within the right iliac (inguinal) region. It is a subdivision of the large intestine and is a blind ended tube attached to the posteromedial surface of the cecum (Marieb, Hoehn, Human Anatomy Physiology, 2016). The appendix is approximately four inches long and roughly a quarter of an inch in diameter in which resembles a worm; therefore, the alternate name vermiform (worm like) appendix was allocated. • 9. Government And Societal Ideas From The 19th Century Government and Societal Ideas from the 19th Century During the 19th Century, three prominent thinkers John Stuart Mill, Giuseppe Mazzini, and Karl Marx had their own ideas of an ideal society. These individuals had their own unique view of the perfect society. However, they all have something in common with their visions: all of these excerpts discussed an oppressive entity. In all of the three ideal societies concocted by these men, tyrannical governments or oppressive societies are obstacles to their visions. In the excerpt from John Stuart Mill s On Liberty, he discusses the imperfection of democracy. He states that democracy was only a perfect system when it was still a dream and not a reality. In the second excerpt, taken from his essay, The Duties of Man, Mazzini discusses the means for an ideal society. He says that for an ideal society to exist the people living in said society must work towards unification and nationalism. Mazzini states that man s primary duty should be towards humanity and his their country. He said that this is what God originally intended as a part of his Divine Design . He also says that this design God intended was corrupted by greedy and oppressive Monarchies. Evidence of this can be taken from The Duties of Man, They have disfigured it by their conquests, their greed, and their jealousy even of the righteous power of others; disfigured it so far that, if we except England and France, there is not perhaps a single country whose present boundaries correspond to that design (Mazzini 1860). He later says the countries of unified people, defined by the vote of free men, will rise from the ruins of traditional monarchies and that there will be harmony between this nations. For Mazzini s ideal society to exist people must make it their duty to follow God s Divine Plan. He expresses this in The Duties of Man, Our Country is our common workshop, whence the products of our activity are sent forth for the benefit of the whole world; wherein the ... Falling hard on the ground and scraping my knee, noticed a good number of roly polies(woodlice), and remembering my cute little hedgehog grabbed a bag from my pack and grabbed a handful of them. At that moment something jumped from the tree and landed on my head. Caught completely off guard I fell over with it on my face. Hitler thought of this bold plan when he recalled how a German hero Frederick the great was facing defeat, Frederick went on a offensive attack at his foe who had superior numbers but the bold moved worked and Hitler thought he could do the same thing. In 2000, the average American driver endured 27 hours of traffic delays each week, more than tripling the average of 7 hours spent in traffic delays in 1980 (Arnott). • 19. Similarities Between Ancient Egypt And Ancient Athens A Comparison of Societies in Ancient Egypt and Periclean Athens Midterm Essay Maureen Cairns In comparing and contrasting the societies of Periclean Athens and ancient Egypt, we must first mention some of the characteristics of an actual society: a society has a stable food supply, social levels and classes, specialization of labor, a system of government, and a highly developed culture. Both the societies of ancient Athens and Egypt fit into these parameters. In this essay we will explore social classes, gender relations, social inequality, and hierarchy as they apply to these societies. Both ancient Athens and Egypt adhered to a strict hierarchical framework, ranking people as superiors or inferiors. Old Kingdom Egyptian hierarchy is described as having the king and queen at the top, with priests, administrators, governors and army commanders coming second, then the commoners who worked mostly in agriculture, and finally, slaves, who had been captured in war. (Hunt, pg. 22). According to Esolen, (pg. 35), Egyptian society was structured as such: the Pharaoh came first, and was believed to be God on earth. Next came the Vizier , who was the pharaohs chief advisor. Nobles were next in the hierarchy, responsible for making local laws. Priests came next, and were responsible for performing rituals and ceremonies. At some point we must move from the event of the resurrection to experiencing the resurrection. Experiencing resurrected life begins with recognizing the risen Christ among us. That is the gift of Easter and it is also the difficulty and challenge described in today s gospel. The Gospel authors (especially Luke and John) go to great lengths to show that there s something different about the resurrected Christ. But, we don t need the details to know that something is going on here. But, one of the other things that the Gospel authors are also clearly intent on showing us, is that it s really Jesus who rose from the dead. It s not a ghost. Not a spirit. Not a vision. Not a hallucination. You can t reach out and touch a hallucination. Visions don t eat broiled fish. That new reality begins with touching and seeing, flesh and bones, hands and feet, and broiled fish. Jesus said to his disciples, Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. He presents his argument against materialism using dialogues between two characters. The first character is Philonous, who is meant to represent George Berkeley and his viewpoints that humans see nothing more than ideas. The second character is named Hylas. Hylas is meant to represent the views of a materialist. A materialist believes everything has a foundation in matter, and therefore humans see objects as they are. In the first dialogue between Philonous and Hylas, they discuss their understanding of the senses as related to matter. More specifically, they are in a debate about whether the senses are a necessary part of matter. Hylas believes matter is a substance that exists without someone needing to perceive it. Hylas argues that light is a material that interacts with the mind to give a perception of some color. More clearly, the mind can only perceive objects who possess qualities that can be understood through the senses. Hylas is arguing that matter in itself has qualities that can be seen in different ways depending on the person, however even if people have conflicting perceptions, the object will always possess its quality. It is no wonder how bottled water became so popular in our society. Healthier than soda, bottled wateris conveniently stored in a lightweight, disposable, plastic bottle. Bottled water sales started when Perrier glass bottled water came overseas to America in the late 1970 s and in 1989, water was available in PET plastic bottles (Tapped). Now everywhere, bottled water can even be found in high school cafeterias while there are water fountains located in nearly every hall. However, there is an opposing view to the product with names such as Ice Mountain, Aquafina, Dasani, Sam s Choice, and Acadia. Through research, bottled water is known to carry human pollutants, exceed other natural resource costs, and take part in a large portion of plastic waste, all in a sixteen ounce plastic bottle. Although bottled water is convenient in only a few cases, public education and legislation are necessary because of the human pollutants, costs, and waste. Bottled water is becoming such a growing industry because it does show to be convenient in some cases. As Kim E. The Cry Of The Children The Cry Of The Children and The Art of Incitation Veering from the egocentric poems of the Romantic era, Victorian poets began to write poetry not only to express the feelings of an I, but also to inspire change in the collective we. One of the most renowned Victorian poets, Elizabeth Barrett Browning possessed the expert skill of integrating not only imagery and precise rhyme scheme into her poetry, but afflicting her readers with a sense of pity so paramount they had no choice but to make a change. • 33. Choice Theory Vs Trait Theory Criminology Essay Theories are a significant part of developing a body of knowledge within an academic discipline. Within the domain of criminology, many theories have provided a foundation to stimulate the growth of this area of study. The beginning of criminology began with individual level theories; they focus on the perpetrator s individualistic features to answer the question of why crimeoccurs. Two major theories that divide the individual level theories are choice theoryand trait theory. Both contain various principles within their unit. We cannot rely solely on reduced heart rates only to diagnose CAN because with advanced nerve dysfunction, heart rates can be normal [95] but it persists in higher rates than patients without any diseases [96]. Deciding on a college is not like buying a new pair of shoes; shoes can be bought, taken home, and, if necessary, returned for something else. In this respect, colleges are not so forgiving. While the option to transfer exists in theory, the expense of transferring and the complicated logistics of transferring from one universityto another leave students with limited options. High school seniors applying to colleges must think carefully about where they will be for the next four years. There are countless factors that each must consider in evaluating a prospective college, but each school s academics and social life are two important factors that must be considered paramount. The University of Virginia(UVA) is one institution that offers top tier academics and a vibrant social scene. Academics are no doubt a major consideration when weighing universities; UVA is nationally recognized for its academics, and it has long been competitive as the premier university in public higher education. Any accredited university can award a degree, with varying levels of prestige to be sure, but perhaps most pertinent in evaluating a college is the quality of the education it has to offer. UVA has long been committed to investing in the quality of its academics. Professors at major universities are notorious for caring almost exclusively about their research and academic prestige, but at UVA, while undoubtedly committed to publishing first rate research, professors are viewed as mentors. The value of this academic relationship cannot be overstated; PhDs guarantee intellectual brilliance, but they do not always translate into good professors. Professors at UVA regularly undergo formal instruction on pedagogy, meaning they receive formal training to ensure that each professor is teaching for the sake of learning and not just lecturing for the sake of fulfilling a job requirement. Examples of Bias Aporach to History Ever since the beginning of civilization starting with the beginnings of even Mesopotamia, history has not only been biased but written by one type of people: the winners. Rarely in history do the winners of a war or battle not write what had happened in their single point of view. The losers are nearly always left out; they re side is almost never heard or even known to exist. The three greatest examples of this bias approach to history are the actions of HernГЎn Cortes and the destruction of the Azteccivilization and Tenochticlan, Ramses the second and his rule of Egypt and conquest of the Middle East, and lastly Julius Caesarand his domination of both Rome and the Mediterranean Sea. These three men and their actions are prime examples of the writing of history only being done by those who victor and succeed. They went and defeated their enemies allowing no other perspective but their own to be written in history; whether it was the Aztecs, the Hittites or the German barbarians, no other mindset was heard other than the winners. From the beginning of civilization to end of civilization, only the winners of a conflict will write history and will determine what the future knows. One of the greatest examples of history being written by the winners is by the Spanish conquistador HernГЎn Cortes. HernГЎn Cortes and his small army of men are held in history for not only defeating the large and expansive Aztec empire but also destroying their city of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Ralph Ellison and Stereotypes Essay Stereotyping is a normal part of every one s life. Humans, by nature, classify things. We name animals and classify them by common characteristics but stereotyping can have negative repercussions, and everyone does it. In a recent study it was proven that everyone has an unconscious need to stereotype (Paul). In Junteenth and The Invisible man, Ralph Ellison argues that stereotyping can cause mayhem by making the people become something they are not. People are forced to by society s views to be something they are not. The Invisible man is forced by society to be a well mannered boy, even after they treated him like black trash calling him things like nigger and made him undress, with other boys around his age, in front of them. Then when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People become what society wants them to be. In Juneteenth Bliss conforms for this older, and in his eyes wiser, man who has raised him as his own. He even becomes a preacher under Hickman, and assists hickman in church services, if he wants to or not. There are things that Bliss wants to do but he doesn t because Hickman has taught him not to. For an example, he wants to go to the movies but Hickmans theory is that when people watch movies they lose touch with who they are supposed to be, Bliss. (Juneteenth p.223) The ironic part of this line is that Hickman is telling Bliss he is going to lose himself if he doesn t listen, and conform to what he is saying, which makes him lose himself entirely. Bliss even becomes so brainwashed by Hickman that he preached about how the white man has stopped them, and him from doing things and taking away their rights making them feel Eyeless, tongueless, drumless, danceless, hornless, songless (Juneteenth p.123), while he is/will be a white man. Hickman makes Bliss into what he believes to be the perfect person but he makes Bliss into something he did not want to be. In The Invisible Man, the invisible man conforms to society all throughout the book he had been conforming to society from the very beginning, he goes to college because he is told that that is where he should be, his grandfather s words haunted him, following him everywhere he went and everything he did he knew that he had to kill them with kindness. • 54. The Myth Of Endometriosis In The Human Body If one breaks down endometriosis, one will find that it means an abnormal condition of the lining inside a uterus. Specifically, the tissue that is inside the uterus will form on an external structure. This has unpleasant consequences when a tissue made for a certain region of the body is acting elsewhere. This condition will mainly affect women and young ladies during their most reproductive years and can affect them both physically and mentally (Reich et al., 2016). Even though most cases are, it is a myth that endometriosisoccurs exclusively in women over twenty years of age. This disease can begin in a body as soon as the female obtains her first menstrual cycle and will unfortunately persist over a lifetime in the body unless an act of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The basal layer of the endometrium produces the external functional layer, and if the basal layer is not removed, then the disease will continue to grow back. This is why laparoscopic excision surgery is the optimal treatment for endometriosis. This procedure will act to remove the deepest layer of the endometrium like tissue. Reich et al. (2016) mentions that receiving a hysterectomy is not the best way to get rid of this condition, even though a large majority of people have come to believe this is true. As previously discussed, endometriosis can spread to areas other than reproductive organs, so pain will persist even after removal of the entire uterus. Pain killers, oral contraceptives and IUDs are common methods for pain treatment and slowing the disease. However, as soon as one is eligible for the diagnosis of endometriosis, laparoscopic surgery to remove all layers of disease should be amongst the top considerations to rid the body of this abnormality, for it has proven to be the most ... • 57. Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress Summary The novel, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai SiJie is about two boys, the narrator and his friend Luo. Along with other with other youths of China, they were both sent down to the country side during the Cultural Revolution of China to be re educated. At the time anyone that had high school education were considered intellectuals and were considered as a threat to the cultural movement. However, the narrator or Luo only had middle school education and were considered intellectuals. One big reason why they were sent down was because their parents were considered intellectuals and they were paying the price for it. During their time in the country side, Luo falls in love with a seamstress and throughout the novelshe is referred... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since love was a very foreign idea to them, it influenced them to become more interested in western book, which did not include any propaganda. When the narrator reads Jean Christophe a book by Romain Rolland, he talks about the main character fondly Without him I would never have understood the splendor of taking free and independent action as an individual. Up until this stolen encounter with Romain Rolland s hero, my poor educated and re educated brains had been incapable of gasping the notion of one man standing up against the whole world (110). This is the main reason why Mao didn t want people reading any kind of literature that was not connected to the party or scientific. Books such as the one the narrator read inspired people which can motivate then to rise up against his dictatorship and lead to his loss of power. When talking about the main character from the Balzac Ursule Mirouet novel, the narrater sates I longed to be like her: to be able, while I lay asleep on my bed, to see what my mother was doing in our apartment five hundred kilometers away, to watch my parents having supper, to observe their gestures...better still, like Ursele, I would visit, in my dreams, places I had never set eyes on before... (58 59). From this passage it can be seen how disillusioned the youth of China were due to the re education process. Another key reason why Luo and the narrator were so interested in the books was because they could relate to the stories. They were able to picture it happening to themselves which in a way gave them an escape from their reality and the fact that they might never be able to move ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
