· Length (7-8 pages).
· Make sure that when you turn in your paper, you have read through it in its final form. This may prove difficult to do after the many editing sessions that you have already enjoyed with it. It is often very helpful to have a friend read it through as well as this lends a fresh perspective.
Format
· Please double-space all your text. That way it is much easier for the instructor to annotate your work.
· Use 1” margins all round. Use 12 pt font. (or 14 font with 1.5 space).Number your pages.
· The final copy should be clean and neat.
Style
· Try to write in the third person whenever possible. For the most part you will be presenting facts. Although, for debate papers you will be arguing a certain point of view and it may therefore be appropriate to use “I” now and then, avoid repeated use of the first person.
· Avoid clichés. (“the bottom line”, “at the end of the day”, “all in all” etc.)
· Avoid slang and informal terms of expression. (“Well, …”, “It was like, we went…”)
· Avoid rhetoric. (“How should I interpret these results?”, “I asked myself - What do people think about global warming?”)
· When you use equations in your paper, make sure that every symbol in the equation is explained. Number equations sequentially for easy referencing.
Grammar and spelling
· Don’t rely on the spelling checker to find all your spelling errors. You must also read through you document to check that “their”, “there” and “they’re”, for example, are correctly used.
· Read and re-read your manuscript. Edit it more than once or twice. Avoid the repetitious use of the same word in a sentence or a paragraph. Edit away all redundancies. I do not want to read the same information over and over again, simply expressed in a slightly different way each time. Remove unnecessary words. Be clear and succinct.
References
· Cite articles by author(s) and year within your text. If there is a single author, the last name and year will suffice – e.g. (Hutchinson, 1995). If there are two authors, include both names and the year of the publication – e.g. (Hutchinson and Osborne, 1978). For more than two authors, use the first author with et al. – e.g. (Hutchinson et al., 1984).
· Include the list of references at the end of your paper. Do not include references you have read but not cited. List the references alphabetically by the first author’s last name.

The Assignment: Write a six-to-ten page argument paper that addresses a current issue that will address our theme of the impact of technology on communication on ourselves, on our world and on what it means to be human (Barrios, 583). The topic and the issue for this paper is the same as your exploratory paper assignment. The purpose of this paper is to present your position on the issue and then argue why by presenting your own reasons and evidence to support your thesis statement.
Locating Sources for Research. The purpose of the exploratory paper was to explore different writers and their position, their perspective, and the types of evidence they used in order to form your own position and perspective. You have three sources that you may use in your paper. For this paper, you must include a variety of sources; they cannot all come from Web sites. Search SMC’s library online catalog, search for a book, search online databases, find newspaper articles, use the search engine Google scholar at www.google.com, or www.yahoo.com . In addition, observations or experience from your personal life are not allowable. Refer to the following handouts: “Research Guide for Papers,” “Sources Acceptable for Academic Papers.” Both of these handouts are on eCompanion. If you include an article from a Website, there must be a date and a sponsor/publisher. If this is not available you cannot use this source.
Thesis Statement and Claim: Does your thesis clearly include a claim? Is it arguable? Does it take a perspective on an issue? Is it narrow and specific enough for the length of this assignment? Is it focused on one subject? Is it a claim of policy where you argue that certainpolicies should be changed? Is it a claim of value where you argue that some action, belief, or policy is morally wrong, good, or bad? Once your claim is clear, you must develop reasons that match and correspond to the type of claim being made.
Audience/Point of View: An effective argument is tailored to its audience. The reasons and the types of evidence you offer, the needs and values to which you appeal, terms defined, all depend on your audience and the type of claim. Ask: What does your audience know or not know about your topic? The audience is your instructor and classmates. Never assume that the audience is familiar with your topic or terms. You may need to include definitions and relevant details to help the audience understand your position in the first body paragraph. For this argument essay, you will use only the third-person point of view. No, “I” “We” or “You.”
Content/Body Paragraphs. For the length of this assignment, you should have at least three-to-four distinct and relevant reasons to support your thesis. Follow the guidelines for writing the argument paper when developing your reasons. Use the “because” clause approach.

Writing a Research Essay in International Relations and Political Science
This is some basic advice on writing an essay in International Relations. The advice is generic, and obviously particular assignments, topics, questions have their own requirements – but this general advice should apply most of the time.
Be aware of what a criteria grading sheet looks like, as this sets out the way in which the essay will be graded. The standard grading sheet looks like this, and you will notice that there are four separate criteria. We will deal with each in turn.
1. Structure/Organization: Have you answered the question? Do you have a clear argument that you defend throughout? Is it well organized with appropriate use of paragraphs?
2. Research: Are you demonstrating research skills? Have you used a range of sources? Is it thoroughly referenced, using an appropriate system, with a bibliography?
3. Content: Do you set out clear arguments/evidence to support your position? Have you considered counter-arguments/evidence? Is their evidence of critical thinking?
4. Presentation: Is the paper well-written? Is it proof-read for grammar and spelling errors?
1. Structure/Organisation
Essays need a clear and concise introduction, which sets out a position: the thesis or argument that the essay will defend. If a question has been set, the introduction needs to clearly answer this question. It does not provide a broad introduction to the topic (avoid waffle or ‘flowery’ introductions), but rather, specifies the particular position that the essay will pursue. The essay then defends this position clearly throughout! I strongly suggest beginning the essay with the line “This essay argues…”. If you can clearly set out your position at the start, it will solve a lot of the structural problems that many essays have. You can then use the rest of the introduction to expand on your argument, detail the case material you are using to support your position, explain how your position allows you to propose an answer to the question(if one is set), and outline the structure of the essay. When outlining the structure of the essay, using first, second, third can be a clear and informative approach for the reader.
The main body of the essay is organised in short, sharp, concise paragraphs. It is important to consistently link the material, ideas, theories, concepts, debates, arguments, evidence, and case studies that you evaluate in the main body of the essay back to the question, and to your argument. Though different courses and different types of written assignments have different objectives, normally it is a good idea to have a balance between theoretical/conceptual debates and discussion, and empirical evidence. Important Reminders
Do not write a personal narrative about yourself or someone you know. The focus of this essay should be on the term, concepts, and characteristics.
Reference and cite at least three secondary sources in your essay. One of your sources should come from the TCC database. You may reference and cite a dictionary, but you should count a dictionary as a fourth source. Also, do not cite Wikipedia as a source.
Do not write in second person (e.g., you, your, yourself, or imperative sentence).

You will be creating an AP Exam Synthesis Question. The Synthesis Question gives you several sources and asks you to combine (synthesize) them with your own thoughts to create a cohesive essay. When gas prices climb, auto makers want to highlight how many miles per gallon the car can travel. Therefore, a car advertised as getting 40 mpg would appeal to a consumer who travels a distance of 40 miles to and from work. If the reader finds the evidence given “logical” it will appeal to the reader.

6. How Do I Reference Quotes? When you include a quote in your work you need to explain to the reader where the quote is from. The best way of doing this is by putting the information in brackets after the quote, for example: “ An eminently artificial thing" (Mill, J.S. 1869 p.238) When you want to refer to a passage in a book or article, write the author's name, date of the book, and page number, in brackets - For example (Mill, J.S. 1869 p.238) This is the reference. The reference does not contain the title or the publisher. The reader finds these out by looking in the bibliography.
7. How Do I Write a Bibliography? In the bibliography, you write the name of the author, date of publication, title of the publication, publisher of edition used and date of edition used, and place of publication. In the case of our example: Mill, J.S. 1869 The Subjection of Women , Dent/Everyman edition 1985, London. In the bibliography, entries are arranged in alphabetical order of author, and different works by the same author are arranged in date order.
