This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

7. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
īRead the working plan.
īInterpret working plan.
īAppreciate the importance of interpreting
technical drawings and plans.
8. Guide Question
īHow do we read and interpret simple technical
drawing signs and symbols based on standard
specification?
īHow do we interpret technical drawings and
plans?
īWhy is it important to read and interpret
technical drawings and plans?
9. 1. What comes into your mind when you hear
technical drawings and plans in carpentry?
Introductory Questions
10.
11. 2. What does the drawing show? Why do you
think carpenters have to interpret drawings and
plans?
Introductory Questions
12. BLUEPRINT READING
īŧ a design plan or other technical drawing.
īŧ draw up (a plan or model).
Building plans and specification form part of the
working drawings needed in any construction
project.
Read and interpret working plans.
13. 1. Site plan- essentially shows the location of a building or
house site. It includes the following:
ī Lot number
ī Distance of the house from the site boundaries
ī Name of the road on which the site is located
ī Actual size of the site
ī Compass direction
ī Position and size of the casement
ī Scale of the drawing
A working drawing should include
the following:
14.
15. 2. Elevation is a scaled drawing of the front rear
or side of a building. It includes dimensions that
cannot be shown on a floor plan such as the
height dimension.
16.
17. 3. Details. Most working drawings are drawn to
the scale of 1:100 which is rather small. It is not
always possible to show important shapes,
positions for assembly, and dimensions of specific
parts of a building. A separate drawing is made
using the larger scales of 1:5 or 1:10.
18.
19. 4. Specification is a written document prepared
by an architect which serves as a set of
instructions or guidelines that accompanies a
working drawing. It describes how certain aspects
of building construction are to be done and which
materials are to be used. It also describes their
desired quality and the expected standard of
work.
20. Reading / Interpreting Elevation Drawing
1. Study the drawing.
2. Identify the parts of the drawing.
3. Understand the details of the drawing.
EXAMPLE 1:
21.
22. ī The drawing is about a house plan. The data
given are the following;
ī Elevation of the floor from the ground which is
0.175 m.
ī Height of the post and walls from finish floor line
which is 3.0 m.
ī Width of the gutter which is 0.30 m.
ī Height of the roof which is 2.75 m.
ī Length of the roof which is 9.50 meters having a
1.50 meters extension from the wall.
Interpretation:
23. Directions: Based on the building plan below,
interpret every data given and then write your
answer in a clean sheet of paper.
EXAMPLE 2:
24.
25. Interpretation:
The drawing is about a house plan. The data
given are the following;
īŧ Elevation of the floor from the ground which is
0.60 m.
īŧ Height of the post and walls from finish floor
line which is 2.7 m.
īŧ Width of the Tie beam which is 0.30 m.
īŧ Height of the roof from the Tie beam which is
1.46 m.
26. Directions: Based on the given situation answer
the following questions and then write your
answer on your activity sheet.
1. If you were a carpenter and I hired you to
renovate my house truss with the given design
below.
Analytical Problem
27. a) How do you interpret technical drawings
and plans?
b) Why is it important to read and interpret
technical drawings and plans?
c) What is your interpretation technical
drawings and plans? Enumerate the parts
and give your interpretation to technical
drawings and plans.
Analytical Problem
28.
29. Interpretation:
a) How do you interpret technical drawings
and plans?
īŧ through data given from the drawing. First you
must know what the given plan was, second
you must be aware of the data given example
the height, length, width.
30. Interpretation:
b) Why is it important to read and
interpret technical drawings and plans?
īŧ because knowing how to read and interpret a
working drawing saves time, money and effort
in the construction of building.
31. Interpretation:
c) What is your interpretation technical
drawings and plans? Enumerate the parts and
give your interpretation to technical drawings
and plans.
The drawing is about the house truss. The
data given are the following;
īŧ Base of the truss which is 6.00 meters long.
īŧ Height of the roof which is 1.28 meters tall.
īŧ Length of the roof which is 7.50 meters long.
32.
33. Interpretation:
c) What is your interpretation technical
drawings and plans? Enumerate the parts and
give your interpretation to technical drawings
and plans.
The drawing is about the house truss. The
data given are the following;
īŧ Base of the truss which is 5.00 meters long.
īŧ Height of the roof which is 1.00 meters tall.
īŧ Length of the roof which is 6.50 meters long.
34. Drawings are important because they are used to
communicate the technical details of a project in a
common format. The drawings also become the
foundation for future projects and cost savings for
customers. Knowing how to read and interpret a
working drawing saves time, money and effort in
the construction of building.
