Aperson’s course or progress through life. 
It also pertains to his occupational or profession that usually involves special 
training or formal education and is considered to be a person’s lifework. 
Career: Herbert Simon defines career as “an honourable occupation with one 
normally takes up during his/her youth with the expectation of advancement and 
pursues it until retirement 
WHAT IS CAREER DEVELOPMENT ? 
Career development is an ongoing process of gaining knowledge and improving 
skills that will help an individual to establish a career plan.
DEFINITIONS 
Career management consists of the process of career planning & career 
succession. Career planning shapes the progression of individuals within an 
organization in accordance with assessments of organizational needs & the 
performance, potential and preferences of individual members of the 
enterprise. 
According to Sonnenfeld, Peiperl and Kotter (1992), 
It is the set of policies & practices an organization uses to provide for its 
human resource requirements. 
Management succession planning takes place to ensure that, as far as 
possible, the organization has the managers it requires to meet future 
business needs.
OVERALL AIMS 
1. To ensure that the organization’s needs for management 
succession are satisfied. 
2. To provide men and women of promise with a sequence of 
training and experience that will equip them for whatever 
level of responsibility they have the ability to reach. 
3. To give individuals with potential the guidance and
