Jane Addams and the Successful Hull House Essay
Jane Addams and her colleague, Ellen Gates Starr, founded the most successful settlement house in
the United States otherwise known as the Hull House ( Settlement 1). It was located in a city overrun
by poverty, filth and gangsters, and it could not have come at a better time (Lundblad 663). The main
purpose of settlement houses was to ease the transition into the American culture and labor force, and
The Hull House offered its residents an opportunity to help the community, was a safe haven for the
city, and led the way through social reform for women and children.
Laura Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois on September 6, 1860. Addams lost her mother to
childbirth at the age of two, and her father, John Addams, was a prominent ... Show more content on

At first, Addams and Starr were only offering readings and painting slides, but the Hull House took a
turn when they realized the need for a safe child environment. A kindergarten was added to the house
with 24 enrolled children and 70 on the waiting list, and a day nursery followed soon after. But the
Hull House was not only for mothers and children. Starr offered sewing and cooking lessons for girls,
while Addams ran a boy s club. Lectures and classes on a wide range of subjects including English,
citizenship and art were offered for free by social reformers, students and university teachers like
Susan B. Anthony and Frank Lloyd Wright ( Hull House 1).Soon after, Addams and Starr were joined
by Julia Lathrop, a college friend and lawyer, and Florence Kelley, a member of the Socialist Labor
Party. It was because of Kelley that the Hull House became a center for social reform. She, along with
Alzina Stevens and Mary Kenney, spear headed the research of the sweating trade in Chicago which
lead to the passing of the Illinois Factory Act of 1893. As a result, Kelley, Stevens and Kenney were
recruited by Senator John Altgeld as factory inspectors. Other working class women interested in
social reform also educated the middle class of the Hull House ( Hull House 1). By 1907, the Hull
House had expanded to include 12 additional buildings, a gymnasium, a boarding school for

National Alliance On Mental Illnesses
There are many organizations that have a huge impact on society, the one I chose to write about is the
National Alliance on Mental Illness, also referred to as NAMI. NAMI is the most popular mental
health organization. Members of this organization work hard to better the lives of those affected by
mental illnesses. The National Alliance on Mental Health has four priorities, those are educating,
advocating, listening, and leading. Mental health is a growing topic that is hard to ignore, this is
because organizations like the NAMI have offered many educational tools in hopes of teaching society
what mental illnesses are and how to help people struggling with mental illnesses. This organization
advocates for others suffering mental illnesses, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The NAMI has shown society how serious mental illnesses are, if one of these many illnesses is left
untreated it can lead to even more serious things. Anxiety and Depression are a deadly combination
and unfortunately, 20% of the teen population experiences and over 25 million Americans experience
it every year. Both of these mental illnesses are hard to handle and often end in suicide, 90% of people
who commit suicide have a mental disorder and 50% of these suicides are caused by depression.
Every day around 121 people kill themselves and with society s help, we can end this. Also, both of
these mental illnesses can lead to eating disorders and other serious health issues. Once everyone
realizes how serious mental illnesses are, the more help these people will

Disadvantages Of Dehumidifier
Today, we are living an aura where the quality of air is excessively low due to pollution and other
human made causes. Even in homes, the surroundings are also not appreciable. It is hard to change the
atmosphere for outside, but people can make it better in their homes by using a high quality
dehumidifier. It is an appliance that significantly decrease the excess level of moisture or humidity in a
room and make it better. There are different types of dehumidifiers in the market, so you can make the
selection accordingly. A small sized dehumidifier is used to maintain the humidity level of a single
room, while a whole home dehumidifier regulates the amount of humidity in the air of an entire
building.
A high level of humidity can cause various health issues including asthma and allergic reactions.
Things can become even worse if you have small ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A noise free dehumidifier is important to have a comfortable sleep even after the proper installation.
There are several models that offer automatic shut off facility when the collection tank is full. This
additional feature helps the dehumidifier to prevent water overflow.
Tips to Keep in Mind While Buying a Dehumidifier:
Presently there are number of companies that offer a high quality and top rated dehumidifiers range.
Every company has its ins and outs. Therefore, it is quite difficult to pick the one that is reliable and
good in performance. To reduce your headache, here are some useful tips to get the best dehumidifier.
Brand: In the market, you will find numerous well known brands. However, it is true that not every
company offers a great value of your money. So, it is suggested to give priority to the performance and
not to the brand. Household dehumidifiers are an example of simple electrical mechanism. There are
no complicated technologies involved. This is the reason why you can buy a low cost as well as a

Poetry Bleeding Coursework
On a brisk night of November the 7th Viento y Agua was host to Poetry Bleeding. This was the fifth
installment of the monthly poetry readings. The readers for this month seemed to have extensive
knowledge of poetry, which was nice because the poetry readings I have seen in the past have not had
this amount of star power. Overall I enjoyed my experience at Viento y Agua and appreciated the
complex poetry. My journey begun as I starred into my mirror wondering if I should wear a sweater or
a jacket. I came to the conclusion that the jacket would be a better choice, due to the fact I can tie it
around my neck like a gay flight attendant if needed. The drive there was the most memorable part of
my evening. I took PCH, with my windows down and

Bitch Better Have My Money
Barbadian singer and songwriter, Rihanna, song titled Bitch Better Have My Money was released in
the year 2015. The popular song had previously landed as number four in Pitchfork s, Best of 2015
list. Just as the title of the music video proposes, the main concept is, Bitch Better Have My Money ; a
concept in which Rihanna is indicating how someone owes her money and needs to pay it forward.
This is not the only notion an individual could get from the song lyrics. The song could be referring to
demanding respect from someone, gaining ethnic dominance, instigation to violence, or even females
being used as objects. Set in a secluded area that includes vehicles driven only by Rihanna herself, a
motel room, the Bitch living room, a gas station just to name a few, Bitch Better Have My Money tells
a sequenced story about how an accountant owes her money and does not pay up his dues when
needed. The strong theme of the song is pay up what you owe or there will be consequences involved.
Music directors, Megaforce and the star Rihanna herself demonstrated several of angles, vibrant
colors, and even slow pans to make the video as popular as it is now.
At the beginning of the video, we first see an unidentified individual sitting in a box. I have used the
word unidentified because only a pair of legs are shown and it does not give enough information in the
beginning yet for us to know who is it. The pair of legs also appear to have spots of red on them¬

Modern Day Sir Thomas More (Script Essay)
Wilshire Boulevard
Two friends are driving in a late model Toyota Corolla across Los Angeles on Wilshire Boulevard.
ROBERT: Where are we going?
DAVE: I don t know. I thought we would just drive along Wilshire.
ROBERT: Why?
DAVE: I don t know. I thought it would be fun. Have you ever driven along Wilshire before? Except
to go from point A to point B?
ROBERT: No.
The two friends drive along in silence. ROBERT gazes at the sidewalk, interested in the activities that
he passes by.
ROBERT: You know what?
DAVE: What?
ROBERT: This city is really sad. There is no one around. No one walks on the streets.

ROBERT: I m glad I don t live here.

ROBERT: It is just so poor (a beat) and nasty.
DAVE: I don t think I follow.
ROBERT: Well, look, there is so much graffiti, and it looks like the street hasn t been cleaned in over a
year. So many potholes. I bet there is a lot of crime.
DAVE: You don t know that.
ROBERT: Well, I can assume. This is a poor neighborhood.
DAVE: Don t you think that that is a bit of a rash decision? Just because someone is poor doesn t
mean that they commit crime. A lot of the problems that we have here in society are because of the
social dichotomy in the United States. Look, we just drove through Beverly Hills, past the Pretty
Woman hotel, and have now entered a poorer neighborhood within 15 minutes. The rich and the poor
live right next to one another. Unfortunately, with the way that society has pushed down the poor in
this country, these people that are driving by will most likely never be able to move up the social
totem pole. The quality of education that these people have is lower than the general society, they do
not have access to quality health care for themselves or their children, and look, I don t happen to see
much food stores or quality restaurants. Instead, I see a lot of fast food chains look, there are three at
that intersection
DAVE points and ROBERT looks.

Price is an important factor that consumers take into consideration before buy a car. We must to
maintain our prices in the same line of our competitors. Our most important target in the next years
will be young people who are having more income. We need to show our products in places where
young people usually attend, like universities, young and fashion neighborhoods and in streets where
youth used to frequent. Another important factor to succeed with our Start from Zero strategy is the
promotion. Considering our target will be young people, is necessary to promote in the most popular
TV shows that young people used to watch. Also we can advertise in fashion magazines and billboards
in fashionable areas. Our recommendation to address this new strategy is: * Decrease our structure
costs. We need to renegotiate with our suppliers. They need to understand that if we do not reduce our
costs we are not going to increase our sales. This is important for them to maintain our commercial
relationship. * Hire new creative and capable people to design the new cars. They need to work in
team with SAIC because they know more the culture of the country. We also need to train in design
issues our current employees that are working in manufacturing. * We recommend launch new models
of cars, especially for young people. We need to design new, young and fashion models for our target

Shin Splints Research Paper
What is the injury?
Shin splints is a term for pain in the front or inner part of the lower leg. Shin splints are common in
athletes. Shin splints are formed when constant stress is placed on the bones, muscles, and joints of the
lower leg. This muscle injury is a type of cumulative stress disorder.
What are the Causes and Risk Factors?
Shin splints are caused by stress that is repetitive on the shinbone and the connective tissues that
attach your muscles to the bone. Running down hill, old shoes, and exercising on hard or inclined
surfaces are all factors that can cause shin splints. Too much pressure on your shins can be bad, and
can be long term if not treated correctly.
What are symptoms and Signs? When shin splints occur, pain is felt in the shins. Tenderness and
soreness of the shins are also signs of shin splints. Swelling of the lower leg is possible. The pain may
occur while exercising, and stop when you quit, but the pain can continue and could form into a stress
reaction or stress fracture if not treated correctly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first thing to do if you think you may have shin splints is to rest. Take some time off exercising.
Ice your shins 3 5 times a day. Over the counter pain relievers might help to ease the pain as well. If
rest, ice, or pain relievers do not work, then consulting a doctor may be necessary to see if the injury
has formed into something worse. A doctor may help ease the pain quicker if you are an athlete and

The Demise Of The Tragedy Of Romeo And Juliet
Relationships are hard to maintain, are they not? The couple will run into problems, that they need to

they re gonna be together forever. The Tragedy Of Romeo And Juliet two people from rivaling houses

problem that lead to their deaths. The strongest point that led to the demise of Romeo and Juliet s is
the fact that juliet fakes her death. There are easier things to do than that idea. Juliet thought of most of
the things that could and did go wrong with the friar s plan in her soliloquy right before she was gonna

Friar s plan. She still goes with it, cause she believes she will end up with Romeo.

The Negative Effects Of Violence In Video Games
Think about it. Does violence in violent video games or role playing games increase violence and
aggression in the real world? Undoubtedly, violent role playing games nowadays are more intense
than ever. These role playing games with simulated violence are perilous for the kids. Surprisingly, In
a simulated role playing game called Killer , students play by shooting each other with water guns to
win money. Author Guy Martin write High Jinks: Shoot Out and tells us about this vehement game.
Games like Killer and other violent video games encourage violence. Not only do they encourage
violence, but they can actually harm the individual playing and distract teens from more important
things like school. Video games can be an opposing factor for many reasons.
According to the text High Jinks: Shoot Out by Guy Martin, the game Killer has a poor effect on the
kids playing and encourages violence. In the text, Martin explains how Killer is a last man standing

she assures that the behavior of individuals can change over time after constantly playing video games
with violence and they can become more aggressive. In the end of the article, Martin states, The game

Imagery Used In Macbeth
The highly acclaimed play called Macbeth often uses many literary devices and imagery to come to a
conclusion about a topic. One of the frequent uses of imagery in this play is the imagery of sleep and
death. Shakespeare often uses the sleep and death imagery to set a tense and eerie tone in the play.
This is seen in the actions of Lady Macbeth in act 5 of the play, the actions of the character Macbeth,
and the scene of and following Duncan s death. First of all, Shakespeare uses the sleep and death
imagery to set an eerie and tense tone within the actions of Lady Macbeth in act 5. It is first used when
she is sleepwalking. In the play, Lady Macbeth is shown sleepwalking at night, speaking during her
sleepwalk, and also having her eyes open, during the dialogue between the gentlewoman and the
doctor saying, GENTLEWOMAN Lo you, here she comes. This is her very guise; and, / upon my life,
fast asleep. Observe her, stand close / [...] DOCTOR You see her eyes are open. / GENTLEWOMAN
Ay, but their sense is shut / [...] DOCTOR Hark! She speaks (Shakespeare V.I.21 22, 26 27,34). She is
completely unresponsive to anything which sets an eerie mood. It does so as the state that she is in is
paradoxical which makes not only bewilders and weirds out the doctor in the scene, but the audience
as well by contradicting the norms. Not only is she sleeping but walking, she is also speaking but
cannot hear, and also has open eyes and a light but cannot see. The scene then proceeds

An article in the New York Times recently mentioned a promising new treatment for JEB. After losing
⅔ of his epidermis due to a bacterial infection, a 7 year old boy with JEB was sent to a burn unit in
Germany, as burn units typically have treatments for people that lose a majority of their skin. The boy
was put in a medically induced coma and doctors attempted to treat him with antibiotics, bandages,
special nutritional measures and a skin transplant from the boy s father. None of the treatments worked
and the boy was expected to live for only an additional two months.
Doctors at the hospital reached out to Dr. Michele De Luca, the director of the Center for Regenerative
Medicine Stefano Ferrari at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy. Dr. De Luca had
previous experience with smaller skin grafts for JEB, larger skin grafts for burn victims and corneal
grafts for eye injuries. His team removed ½ in2 of the boy s skin in an area where his skin was not yet
affected and genetically engineered his cells with a retroviral vector to the full version of the LAMB3
complementary DNA, which was a precursor to the normal version of his mutated gene. The cells
were grown into sheets totaling 9 ft2 and grafted back onto his body. 80% of the patient s skin was
replaced and the treatment was successful. The boy remains recovered two years after the treatment

A Study On Low Back Pain Patients With Associated Leg Pain...
Abstract
Background: Low back pain patients with associated leg pain symptoms generally have a poorer
prognostic outcome compared to those with localised low back pain. Therefore, this study will
investigate the difference in clinical outcomes associated with low back pain patients with and without
self reported leg pain symptoms. This study will also address if additional co factors such as age, sex,
and occupation have an effect on the severity of these clinical outcomes. The clinical outcomes which
will be considered are pain rating, interference with active daily living (ADL) rating, anxiety rating,
depression rating and control of pain rating.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study compares adult low back pain patients with localised pain (n
= 58) to low back pain patients with self reported leg pain symptoms (n = 54) who presented for
chiropractic treatment. Patients completed the WIOC patient outcomes questionnaire as baseline
which consisted of the Bournemouth Questionnaire, recording responses from an 11 point numerical
scale (NRS). Demographic information was also collected. Differences between the two groups using
the data collected from this questionnaire were calculated using the Mann Whitney U test. Differences
between age and sex were also calculated using the test used.

interest for me to study how the economic policies affect the whole country s development.
Also, both Stalin and Mao were famous and controversial leaders in the 20th century. They brought
success to their countries but also caused harms to it. This topic actually provides a great chance to
have an sight into two valuable leaders and quest their ups and downs in USSR and China

The Flu is an Imminent Pandemic Essay
Flu: The Imminent Pandemic
Influenza is an everyday disease that affects thousands worldwide. Despite its reputation as a mundane
sickness, the flu (especially the avian flu) is widely touted by experts as the propagator of the next
deadly pandemic. The secret to this virus lethality is its antigenic shifting, leading to increased
virulence and transmission factors. If one strain of a super flu begins circulating, millions of lives and
billions of dollars will be lost. Only by preparing a national and worldwide response to this threat will
we be able to combat this imminent pandemic.
Deadlier than the Black Death, more lethal than nuclear warfare this is the modus operandi of the
pathogenic virus alphainfluenzavirus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet the flu is still a threat to humans, even in countries with access to excellent medical care. Why?
Although yearly vaccines prevent many people from succumbing the disease, the flu virus can go
through what is called an antigenic shift one strain of the flu can jump between two different species,
go through an intermediate host to another species, or genetically mix when two strains meet in the
same cell (CNN 2). To give one example, let s say a common human strain (H3N2) finds a human cell
and uses its hemagglutinin proteins to infiltrate it. Another strain that infects birds, such as H5N1,
enters the same cell. These two sets of genetic material mix to yield a new strain, which may inherit
the transmission and severity factors from both parent strains to produce a new virulent virus in
humans (CNN 3). This is how zoonotic strains of pathogens enter the human pool of diseases. If we
see this happen with a strain of avian flu, the consequences will be overwhelming.
The impact of seasonal influenza is already severely underestimated, killing between a quarter to a
half a million people each year and costing billions of dollars in productivity (Wilschut 17). With one
strain of the super flu, we could be facing a worldwide catastrophe. A typical pandemic occurs in multi
year waves, beginning with a mutation in the original virus and spreading into subsequent milder
cycles of disease,

Hae Min Lee Case Study
Facts about Hae Min Lee s Murder Case Hae Min Lee was reported to have lost on January 13, 1999.
Her lifeless body was discovered by law enforcement agencies on February 9 in Leaking Park. After
being treated as a possible homicide, investigations began to identify the killer. Adnan Syed was
convicted of the murder as a result of follow ups that led to many dormant leads, recheck alibis and
even question assumptions supporting the murder. Since it is evident that Adnan had a previous
relationship with Hae Min Lee, it is obvious that after they had broken up, there were suspicions that
Adnan hatched a plan to kill her. Jay s story supported the account that Adnan had killed her and
buried her. Although Adnan s story contains many layers of contradictions, misleading information,
and fascinating characters, it demonstrates a fog of ambiguity to what happened to Hae Min Lee. I
believe that Adnan killed Hea with an aim of revenging after the break up. Adnan seems to have killed
her to ensure that she had felt the pain that he had. I arrived at this conclusion because after they broke
up, the phone call details that Adnan was bitter after Hea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although there are many contradictions related to Adnan s alibi, the evidence and the fact that they
had a previous relationship with Hae point to him in many ways. If I were a judge in the jury, I would
still convict Adnan since he does not provide sufficient evidence beyond proof to demonstrate that he
did not have the motive to kill her. Although there are unresolved discrepancies, it is evident that life
was lost in the case. Since neither Adnan s story nor that of Jay aligns with evidence, it is evident that
the circumstantial evidence points to Adnan. The doubts should be cleared by conducting an analysis
of the evidence brought in the story and all the possible accounts to put a rest to this

ECCO is a well developed company. Each step they take they try to improve every stage in the value
chain. They are very efficient and you can see this in their increasing sales. They got companies all
over the world and one main objective is minimizing their costs. They do this by example having
companies all over world instead of exporting their goods. This will help ECCO reduce taxes on
export goods. They can do this in Turkey by creating their own factory and have local employees.

Ecco controls the entire value chain from cow to customer. One of Ecco s most important raw

The Pros And Cons Of Classifications In Biology
Classification is a matter of categorizing various living things into different groups and therefore we
can distinguish diverse species. It is absolutely crucial and takes a huge role in our lives of human

gradually led to a massive development of Science, especially Biology and eventually resulted in the
creation of new classification systems which we are pretty much aware of in the 21st century. If there
were no classifications towards the uncountable living things, the entire world would be in a definite

Jeremiah Project Analysis
During the summer before my senior year, I applied to be in a performance group called the Jeremiah
Project during the Montreat Youth Conference. I was selected along with seventeen other people to be
in the group, which is called the Jeremiah Project. Throughout the week long conference, I worked to
lead the worship sessions by writing and performing in interpretations of biblical stories, reading
liturgy, and sharing personal stories. The stories shared adhered to the daily theme. The themes ranged
from bodily insecurity, to feeling exiled, to a time when we saw God s light in our lives. I made the
decision not to share my story with the conference as a whole that week. Even before the testimonies

Literary Analysis Of Ross Capicchioni By Joyner Lucas
The song Ross Capicchioni by Joyner Lucas can be a prime example of a literary piece because of its
plot, multi perspectives, and tone throughout the song. Manipulating words so that it could fit into
different rhyming schemes to set a specific tone has added a dramatic and poetic effect on literary
writings. A good plot is one of, if not the most critical part of a literary piece because it keeps a reader,
viewer or listener interested in the piece. Lastly, the multi perspectives of the piece makes it literary
because of the ability to imagine and bring to life both points of views are rare in writings, songs and
poems.
Ross Capicchioni is based on a true story, which is about a 10th grade transfer student (Ross
Capicchioni) that is greeted and welcomed by another student at his high school. While Ross was
enjoying his time at school and building his friendship with one of his peers, the so called friend was
plotting to kill Ross but could not find a good time to do it. The song finally gets to a point where
Ross is offered a car by his uncle and is asked by his friend to be dropped off on a side of town that is
known to be gang affiliated. Regardless of the countless signs Ross notice s, he refuses to follow his
gut but he continues to help his friend . When they arrived at the destination Ross is stripped out of the
car and is shot with a shot gun 3 times (chest, head, and arm). Once he realizes that he has been shot
and tries to fight through the pain, the writer switches perspective from the victim to the perpetrator.
When the Joyner starts to rap, he first sets the tone of the song. Woke up at 7, my day seemed more
than I prayed for, Got dressed to head out and ride to school on my skateboard while the line seems to
be very basic to others, Joyner tells the listener this to give a sense of innocents to the character
throughout the story. Right after Joyner shows innocents of the high school kid, he follows the two
lines with New kid in class I sat alone takin notes while the hoodlums were makin jokes at the clothes
that my momma paid for . By now Joyner has also told us what type of neighborhood and kids that the
innocent kid is dealing with in his school. Using the term hoodlums tells

The Emotional Impacts Of War
The emotional impacts of war are experienced differently and can generate a negative outlook on
fighting for your country. War can either make you or break you. Emotionally it can be very
complicated, many soldiers end disabled, diseased and die. As we have read in the previous units,
there will always emotional attachment that can not be measured. The emotional impact that war has
causes a positive and negative outcome. Society would wonder why one would want to devote
themselves to battle their life for the life of others, while their own families would be wondering if
their loved one is still breathing and well. On the positive side their loved one is fighting for the
country and that is a very proud thing. While on the negative side, ... Show more content on

because Mansfield explained what the ones back home go through once someone of their own dies in
suffrage. The symbolism that between the fly and his son is what Mansfield is portraying to the
readers. She wants us to see the pain a father undergoes when his son is no more and to add to that, his

Sonnet 18 By William Shakespeare
SONNET 18 BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
William Shakespeare wrote Sonnet 18 as part of a sequence of 154 sonnets. Also known as Shall I
Compare Thee? Sonnet 18 has become one of his most well loved poems. Shakespeare includes
symbols of time, decay and eternity within this work. The speaker explicates his unending love for his
beloved and how it will live on after death. The first quatrain introduces the personification of
summer.
The speaker begins the sonnet by asking if he can compare his friend to a warm, summer day. A brief
statement stating how lovely and temperate thee is follows this rhetorical question. Rough winds do
shake the darling buds of May, Shakespeare s first example of personification, says that strong winds
can hurt the new flower buds and summer s lease hath all too short a date, explains that the season
does not last long. The mention of a lease refers to the fact that summer must end.
The personification of nature is even more evident in the second quatrain. This time the sun is named
the eye of heaven. The speaker also suggests that the sun is sometimes hidden. Additionally, it is said
that everything that has beauty will fade. This may be by chance or by inevitable time. Shakespeare
uses the word untrimm d to refer to these fair things as losing their decorations, or trimmings.
However, the speaker has changed the overall tone at the beginning of the third quatrain. Moving
away from the beautiful description of summer, the speaker explains

Response To Failure
Failure is really just a part of life. From god, to love, to our own academic studies, we have all failed
at something before, and it sure made us feel upset, or some other negative feelings, but along comes
Angel Perez and Mandy Oaklander to help save the day from the sheer destruction of our guilt to tell
us to bounce back , and that it is okay to fail. Something quite often unheard of would be positive
responses to failure, making it look like it is no big deal, but a rather out of proportion. Given both
articles it is not hard to see that Perez does not expect perfection, not the brightest light in the dark
sky, but rather a lesson learned from failure, rather than punishment. Oaklander on the other hand talks
of building up resilience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What Oaklander believes is that resilience can be built, and that all it takes is simply for a failure as a
trigger event to get us going, putting up our natural mental defenses that act as a coping mechanism,
and of course with some resilience it can determine how well you will bounce back from a triggering
event considering it does not take much to trigger stress as Oaklander himself says. It does not take a
predator to trigger a stress response in modern humans (Oaklander). Oaklander like Perez can see that
we as humans are not the most durable of people and that certain things can impact our lives a lot
more than they should. From failing one simple assignment to not being acknowledged by others it
can lead to a recognized stress trigger creating any residual feeling from the original stress event to
have the same effect on the individual as the first time it happened. To ever think that a simple thought
makes people cower and mentally impairs them is simply highly illogical when one thinks about it,
but it shows how much resilience an individual might lack. Of course, Oaklander believes that
resilience can be built up like someone would a fine tuned body with the most desirable human traits,
meaning peak athletic condition, and a mentality like a rock. Within the article, Oaklander states In an
interesting twist, scientists have learned that working the body s muscles makes people s minds more
resilient as well. ( Oaklander). Allowing the body to enter a prime condition gives for a harder
mentality as stated before as things no longer seem to become overwhelming, but obstacles in a path,
and of course with that level of confidence an obstacle may seem easier than breathing. Resiliency is
finally shown when the body is properly exercised. Resiliency from that point now is finally no longer
just a mental thing, but a physical one

Black Music In The 1920 s
Unfortunately, the history of black music has been a continuous one of whites lucrative expropriation
of black cultural forms (Kelley). Black music has become a part of a structure of stealing (Kelley) on
the part of a white dominated music industry. This structure began primarily during the jazz era of the
1920 s. Black jazz artists were exploited for their talent, without being given the full credit or
compensation for their work that they deserved. Furthermore, their music and style was copied and
credited to white artists, and the few black artists who were able to succeed in the industry were
submitted to a form of musical segregation via race records.

Due to the lucrative business of black jazz music, in the 1920 s record labels developed race records,
or race music; the name given to recordings by black artists that were marketed [specifically] to the
black buying public (Zolten). This process segregated the musical community, creating race based
binaries and a glass ceiling for black artists that was nearly impossible to break through. These race
records limited their audience appeal and made it impossible for their music to reach the entire
population. It was a means of separating the black artists from the rest of the music industry.
Furthermore, at its zenith, race music was a hugely profitable venture, selling upwards of 100 million
records each year (Chatard). While the industry was attempting to target black audiences, it was the
whites who were making all the money in a patronizing form of control over the music s distribution
that exploited black artists and black audiences. Race music was a means of capitalizing on black
America s rising sense of cultural solidarity, and did so by objectifying the jazz sound and jazz
musicians as a means of profiting on their musical expression. Black music was being marginalized as
made for only black audiences, while white jazz musicians were capitalizing on the black sound.
Furthermore, black artists continued to often be kept anonymous, and were never given credit for their
music. Although race records did become a means of popularizing and celebrating African American
artists, it was a primarily pejorative form of segregating the music industry by race that limited the
black artists potential for monetary and celebratory

What Type Of Pet Adopt First Time Owners
When deciding on what type of pet to adopt first time owners have plenty of choices, each one
presenting owners with their own unique set of pros and cons to consider along with personal needs.
For example, if training and frequent walks aren t ideal for the first time owners, then they might want
to explore options other than dogs, such as cats, reptiles, or fish. Due to lack of research, some owners
end up with the wrong type of animal for them, which can lead to increased levels of stress and
anxiety for not only the owners, but the pets as well.
For those who either already go on regular walks, or who are willing to implement a walk into their
daily routine, adopting a dog might be an option. Dogs are a great idea for those with a large yard and
plenty of room for the dogs to run around and play, who spend plenty of time at home and can provide
the dog with plenty of love and attention, and especially anyone suffering from anxiety and/or
depression. Studies have shown that simply petting a dog can lower a person s heart rate and regulate
their respiration, making them a beneficial companion for people with high anxiety and stress levels.
Dog owners also benefit from lower levels of depression than their non pet owning counterparts.

principles essential to rocket flight was a wooden bird. Escaping steam propelled the birdwas

Social Justice Issue Of Suicide Prevention Essay
For this online assignment, I am going to be focusing on the social justice issue of suicide prevention.
This is a social justice issue because it affects the community as a whole, not just the person who is
experiencing suicidal ideation. Looking at the issue from the bigger picture can help to establish more

Question #1 I would give myself a rating of 9 with how willing I am to allow the issue of suicide
prevention to be questioned and refuted by scientific evidence. Through my experience, which I will

Literature often seems tedious and a chore to read. Students often dread reading mandatory literature

oppressed. Slavery, in all aspects, is wrong. Just the idea of one human owning another human is
sickening. I do not think I would be able to have such a strong opinion without reading literature.
Literature, specifically Beloved, has taught me how abusive slave labor is on the body, and how
psychologically straining it is being constantly dehumanized. In the last paragraph of Beloved,
Morrison writes, It was not a story to pass on. So they forgot her. Like an unpleasant dream during a
troubling sleep...This is not a story to pass on (Morrison 324). Morrison is making note that this story
of a mother s plan to save her children by murdering them would not have been passed down in
society. The people in these stories, like Margaret Garner, are forgotten in society. Morrison gives
these disremembered people a voice. The horrific events and all the other mentions of abuse are not
talked about or written about because it makes America and its slave owning history look bad, but this
is the truth. We should read literature to educate us on the past, to sympathize with those suffering in
modern day slavery, and to take action that such events never repeat

Analyses of Race and Gender Issues in Othello
The discussion of race in Shakespeare s Othello has received a great deal of critical attention. Virginia
Mason Vaughn, in her book Othello: A Contextual History, surveys this critical history, beginning with
Marvin Rosenberg s 1961 book The Masks of Othello (a book documenting the nineteenth century
tendency toward representing Othello as light skinned), and continuing through to Jack D Amico s
1991 book The Moor in English Renaissance Drama. According to Vaughan herself, The effect of
Othello depends . . . on the essential fact of the hero s darkness, the visual signifier of his Otherness

The discourses of Renaissance misogyny can be seen clearly in such pamphlets as Joseph Swetnam s
The Araignment of Lewd, Idle, Froward, and Vnconstatnt Women (1616): For women have a thousand
ways to entise thee, and ten thousand waies to deceiue thee (15); they lay out the foldes of their haire,
to entangle men into their loue; betwixt their brests is the vale of destruction, in their beds there is hell,
sorrow repentance (16); Eagles eat not men till they are dead, but women deuoure them aliue: for a
woman will pick thy pocket, and empty thy purse, laugh in thy face and cut thy throat (16); They will
play the horse leach to suck away thy wealth, but in the winter of thy misery shee will flie away from
thee (16). Women are here figured as deceiving, dishonest, and dangerous creatures concerned solely
with the entrapment and destruction of men. They are portrayed as uncontrollable. The concern over
the sexual fidelity of women in reality a concern for masculine control over feminine sexuality is
reflected in John Raynolds A Defence of the Ivdgement of the Reformed Churches (1610): the truth
deliverd by our Saviour Christ alloweth hime whose wife commiteth fornication, to put her away, and
to marrie another (2); it is lawfull for him who hath put away his wife for whoredome to marrie
another (3).
I do not mean to imply that Renaissance discourses concerning women are exclusively misogynistic;

Symbolism In The Film The Others
In his classic film The Others, Alejandro Amenábar questions the nature of religion, life and death,
and reality in a shockingly beautiful way. He handles symbolism masterfully, using classic motifs such
as light and dark and haunted houses to get his point across further. Ignorant of their death at first, the
children, who were in their lifetime allergic to light, avoided it at all costs. Light, often, is used as a
symbol for truth: a guiding light for those who fumble about in the darkness. This is the same case in
The Others. They fought to stay in the darkness and remain ignorant, but after discovering that they
were dead all along, the light becomes good to them, even beautiful, and they welcome it. This
obviously represents the truth

The Metaphysics Of Morals By Immanuel Kant
In The Metaphysics of Morals, Section I focuses on the process of instilling the concept of virtue into
those who have not yet developed their own sense of pure practical reason. The author insists that this
should be done methodically and through a system of dialogue. Through a series of questions and
answers between a pupil and his instructor.
In Section I of The Metaphysics of Morals, Immanuel Kant states that moral catechism needs to
precede any religious catechisms. Kant goes on to say that professions of religion cannot be made
until a mature moral conscience exists as it can make religion impure. I disagree with this sentiment,
as I believe that my own moral conscience is based on Christian beliefs, and not the other way around.

  • 2. Jane Addams and the Successful Hull House Essay Jane Addams and her colleague, Ellen Gates Starr, founded the most successful settlement house in the United States otherwise known as the Hull House ( Settlement 1). It was located in a city overrun by poverty, filth and gangsters, and it could not have come at a better time (Lundblad 663). The main purpose of settlement houses was to ease the transition into the American culture and labor force, and The Hull House offered its residents an opportunity to help the community, was a safe haven for the city, and led the way through social reform for women and children. Laura Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois on September 6, 1860. Addams lost her mother to childbirth at the age of two, and her father, John Addams, was a prominent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At first, Addams and Starr were only offering readings and painting slides, but the Hull House took a turn when they realized the need for a safe child environment. A kindergarten was added to the house with 24 enrolled children and 70 on the waiting list, and a day nursery followed soon after. But the Hull House was not only for mothers and children. Starr offered sewing and cooking lessons for girls, while Addams ran a boy s club. Lectures and classes on a wide range of subjects including English, citizenship and art were offered for free by social reformers, students and university teachers like Susan B. Anthony and Frank Lloyd Wright ( Hull House 1).Soon after, Addams and Starr were joined by Julia Lathrop, a college friend and lawyer, and Florence Kelley, a member of the Socialist Labor Party. It was because of Kelley that the Hull House became a center for social reform. She, along with Alzina Stevens and Mary Kenney, spear headed the research of the sweating trade in Chicago which lead to the passing of the Illinois Factory Act of 1893. As a result, Kelley, Stevens and Kenney were recruited by Senator John Altgeld as factory inspectors. Other working class women interested in social reform also educated the middle class of the Hull House ( Hull House 1). By 1907, the Hull House had expanded to include 12 additional buildings, a gymnasium, a boarding school for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. National Alliance On Mental Illnesses There are many organizations that have a huge impact on society, the one I chose to write about is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also referred to as NAMI. NAMI is the most popular mental health organization. Members of this organization work hard to better the lives of those affected by mental illnesses. The National Alliance on Mental Health has four priorities, those are educating, advocating, listening, and leading. Mental health is a growing topic that is hard to ignore, this is because organizations like the NAMI have offered many educational tools in hopes of teaching society what mental illnesses are and how to help people struggling with mental illnesses. This organization advocates for others suffering mental illnesses, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The NAMI has shown society how serious mental illnesses are, if one of these many illnesses is left untreated it can lead to even more serious things. • 7. Bitch Better Have My Money Barbadian singer and songwriter, Rihanna, song titled Bitch Better Have My Money was released in the year 2015. The popular song had previously landed as number four in Pitchfork s, Best of 2015 list. Just as the title of the music video proposes, the main concept is, Bitch Better Have My Money ; a concept in which Rihanna is indicating how someone owes her money and needs to pay it forward. This is not the only notion an individual could get from the song lyrics. The song could be referring to demanding respect from someone, gaining ethnic dominance, instigation to violence, or even females being used as objects. Set in a secluded area that includes vehicles driven only by Rihanna herself, a motel room, the Bitch living room, a gas station just to name a few, Bitch Better Have My Money tells a sequenced story about how an accountant owes her money and does not pay up his dues when needed. The strong theme of the song is pay up what you owe or there will be consequences involved. Music directors, Megaforce and the star Rihanna herself demonstrated several of angles, vibrant colors, and even slow pans to make the video as popular as it is now. At the beginning of the video, we first see an unidentified individual sitting in a box. Although yearly vaccines prevent many people from succumbing the disease, the flu virus can go through what is called an antigenic shift one strain of the flu can jump between two different species, go through an intermediate host to another species, or genetically mix when two strains meet in the same cell (CNN 2). To give one example, let s say a common human strain (H3N2) finds a human cell and uses its hemagglutinin proteins to infiltrate it. Another strain that infects birds, such as H5N1, enters the same cell. These two sets of genetic material mix to yield a new strain, which may inherit the transmission and severity factors from both parent strains to produce a new virulent virus in humans (CNN 3). • 31. Literary Analysis Of Ross Capicchioni By Joyner Lucas The song Ross Capicchioni by Joyner Lucas can be a prime example of a literary piece because of its plot, multi perspectives, and tone throughout the song. Manipulating words so that it could fit into different rhyming schemes to set a specific tone has added a dramatic and poetic effect on literary writings. A good plot is one of, if not the most critical part of a literary piece because it keeps a reader, viewer or listener interested in the piece. Lastly, the multi perspectives of the piece makes it literary because of the ability to imagine and bring to life both points of views are rare in writings, songs and poems. Ross Capicchioni is based on a true story, which is about a 10th grade transfer student (Ross Capicchioni) that is greeted and welcomed by another student at his high school. While Ross was enjoying his time at school and building his friendship with one of his peers, the so called friend was plotting to kill Ross but could not find a good time to do it. The song finally gets to a point where Ross is offered a car by his uncle and is asked by his friend to be dropped off on a side of town that is known to be gang affiliated. Regardless of the countless signs Ross notice s, he refuses to follow his gut but he continues to help his friend . When they arrived at the destination Ross is stripped out of the car and is shot with a shot gun 3 times (chest, head, and arm). Once he realizes that he has been shot and tries to fight through the pain, the writer switches perspective from the victim to the perpetrator. When the Joyner starts to rap, he first sets the tone of the song. Woke up at 7, my day seemed more than I prayed for, Got dressed to head out and ride to school on my skateboard while the line seems to be very basic to others, Joyner tells the listener this to give a sense of innocents to the character throughout the story. Right after Joyner shows innocents of the high school kid, he follows the two lines with New kid in class I sat alone takin notes while the hoodlums were makin jokes at the clothes that my momma paid for . • 34. Sonnet 18 By William Shakespeare SONNET 18 BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE William Shakespeare wrote Sonnet 18 as part of a sequence of 154 sonnets. Also known as Shall I Compare Thee? Sonnet 18 has become one of his most well loved poems. Shakespeare includes symbols of time, decay and eternity within this work. The speaker explicates his unending love for his beloved and how it will live on after death. The first quatrain introduces the personification of summer. The speaker begins the sonnet by asking if he can compare his friend to a warm, summer day. A brief statement stating how lovely and temperate thee is follows this rhetorical question. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, Shakespeare s first example of personification, says that strong winds can hurt the new flower buds and summer s lease hath all too short a date, explains that the season does not last long. The mention of a lease refers to the fact that summer must end. The personification of nature is even more evident in the second quatrain. This time the sun is named the eye of heaven. The speaker also suggests that the sun is sometimes hidden. Additionally, it is said that everything that has beauty will fade. This may be by chance or by inevitable time. Shakespeare uses the word untrimm d to refer to these fair things as losing their decorations, or trimmings. However, the speaker has changed the overall tone at the beginning of the third quatrain. From god, to love, to our own academic studies, we have all failed at something before, and it sure made us feel upset, or some other negative feelings, but along comes Angel Perez and Mandy Oaklander to help save the day from the sheer destruction of our guilt to tell us to bounce back , and that it is okay to fail. Something quite often unheard of would be positive responses to failure, making it look like it is no big deal, but a rather out of proportion. Oaklander on the other hand talks of building up resilience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What Oaklander believes is that resilience can be built, and that all it takes is simply for a failure as a trigger event to get us going, putting up our natural mental defenses that act as a coping mechanism, and of course with some resilience it can determine how well you will bounce back from a triggering event considering it does not take much to trigger stress as Oaklander himself says. It does not take a predator to trigger a stress response in modern humans (Oaklander). Oaklander like Perez can see that we as humans are not the most durable of people and that certain things can impact our lives a lot more than they should. From failing one simple assignment to not being acknowledged by others it can lead to a recognized stress trigger creating any residual feeling from the original stress event to have the same effect on the individual as the first time it happened. To ever think that a simple thought makes people cower and mentally impairs them is simply highly illogical when one thinks about it, but it shows how much resilience an individual might lack. Of course, Oaklander believes that resilience can be built up like someone would a fine tuned body with the most desirable human traits, meaning peak athletic condition, and a mentality like a rock. Within the article, Oaklander states In an interesting twist, scientists have learned that working the body s muscles makes people s minds more resilient as well. ( Oaklander). Allowing the body to enter a prime condition gives for a harder mentality as stated before as things no longer seem to become overwhelming, but obstacles in a path, and of course with that level of confidence an obstacle may seem easier than breathing. Black music has become a part of a structure of stealing (Kelley) on the part of a white dominated music industry. This structure began primarily during the jazz era of the 1920 s. Black jazz artists were exploited for their talent, without being given the full credit or compensation for their work that they deserved. Due to the lucrative business of black jazz music, in the 1920 s record labels developed race records, or race music; the name given to recordings by black artists that were marketed [specifically] to the black buying public (Zolten). This process segregated the musical community, creating race based binaries and a glass ceiling for black artists that was nearly impossible to break through. These race records limited their audience appeal and made it impossible for their music to reach the entire population. It was a means of separating the black artists from the rest of the music industry. Furthermore, at its zenith, race music was a hugely profitable venture, selling upwards of 100 million records each year (Chatard). While the industry was attempting to target black audiences, it was the whites who were making all the money in a patronizing form of control over the music s distribution that exploited black artists and black audiences. Race music was a means of capitalizing on black America s rising sense of cultural solidarity, and did so by objectifying the jazz sound and jazz musicians as a means of profiting on their musical expression. Black music was being marginalized as made for only black audiences, while white jazz musicians were capitalizing on the black sound. Furthermore, black artists continued to often be kept anonymous, and were never given credit for their music.
