Cardiac enzymes are proteins released into the bloodstream when the heart muscle is damaged. The main types discussed are troponin I and T, CK-MB, LDH, myoglobin, and BNP. Troponin I and T rise 3-4 and 4-6 hours respectively after injury and peak at 18-24 hours. CK-MB rises 4-6 hours after injury and peaks at 24 hours. LDH rises 48-72 hours after injury. Myoglobin rises very quickly within 1-4 hours and peaks at 6-12 hours. BNP is used to assess heart failure. Nurses must properly collect and label samples for cardiac enzyme tests and promptly inform doctors of results while closely monitoring patients.
