Cardiac enzymes are markers that are tested when myocardial infarction (MI) is suspected. While normally present, their levels significantly increase when there is damage to the heart muscle. Different enzymes peak at varying times after MI onset, from 3-4 hours for troponin T to 48-72 hours for lactic dehydrogenase. Drawing samples 6 hours apart can detect rising enzyme levels that help diagnose MI. Troponin I and Creatine Phosphokinase are highly specific for MI.
