Captain John Smith was an English explorer, colonial leader, and author who played an important role in establishing the Jamestown colony in Virginia as its third president. He was born in 1580 in England and left home at age 16 after his father died. In 1606, he was one of the 100 men who traveled to establish the first permanent English settlement in the New World at Jamestown. While serving as Jamestown's president from September 1608 to August 1609, Smith established order and law, ensuring the colony's survival through difficult early years.
