Puritans were English Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries who sought to purify the Church of England from its "Catholic doctrines and rites" and they later migrated to America in search of religious freedom. William Bradford came aboard the Mayflower and wrote Of Plymouth Plantation, a history of the Plymouth Colony. John Winthrop delivered the sermon "A Model of Christian Charity" aboard the Arbella, influencing the idea of America as a "city upon a hill." Anne Bradstreet was the first female poet published in America, her work appearing in The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America in 1650.
