The Declaration Of Independence
1. Thomas Jefferson was chosen to draft the Declaration of Independence due to his skills as a writer and to represent Virginia, though he was busy with many other tasks and wanted to be home with his ill wife. 2. Jefferson drafted the Declaration over two weeks in June 1776, drawing on his own writings and the ideas of the Enlightenment. He focused on condemning the King rather than Parliament. 3. Congress made some edits to Jefferson's draft, mostly toning down criticisms of the King. They adopted independence on July 2nd and approved the final Declaration on July 4th.
