John Smith was a captain in the early years of the Jamestown colony. He helped the struggling colony by exploring and mapping Virginia territory, making friends with local Indian tribes to prevent attacks, and establishing order with the rule that colonists must work or not eat. After being injured in a gunpowder accident, Smith returned to England and made his living writing books about his adventures in the colony.
