High-Impact Projects at a Glance: Displays from the 2014 Institute

During the summer High-Impact Institutes, teams spend about half of the time working collaboratively to create their strategies and plans for making civic engagement and community engaged learning deeper, more pervasive, and more integrated. This includes identifying new or existing high-impact educational practices (like First Year Experience or Internships) to connect with community engagement. It also includes finding ways to create, deepen and enhance community partnerships so that they integrate high-impact community engagement practices (like Place, Voice, Reciprocity, Sequence, Teams, and Inquiry). Towards the end of the Institute, teams present their plans for feedback from other teams (peers) and coaches, reinforcing the learning community. In 2014, teams from Cohorts 1 and 2 presented their plans visually, on display boards, and networked with others to explain them in a charette session. Teams from Cohort 3, which began in 2014, then presented the next day verbally (not pictured). These slides and photos capture some of the teams' plans and displays.

2017 Bonner Program - The Road Ahead

The Bonner Program provides intensive community service opportunities for students with financial need who are committed to social justice. Bonner students serve 8-10 hours per week and have meaningful summer internships. They receive training and reflection to develop as citizens and leaders. USU launched a program in 2016 to connect researchers seeking federal funding with librarians to assist them with data management. This program assisted over 100 researchers, but was it successful? Our presentation will discuss how we evaluated the success of this program using online asynchronous focus groups (OAFG) in conjunction with a traditional survey. Our cross-institutional research team will share our findings as well as the challenges and successes of using OAFGs to assess library services.

The presentation explored the intersection of student focused social justice interests, civic engagement goals, and community partnership opportunities. The underlying premise was that when students connect with community issues that they are passionately interested in they become more deeply involved with learning objectives and have the opportunity to learn from experts in social justice issues. The end result is an opportunity to immerse students in opportunities to become catalysts and leaders of social transformation. This presentation focused on a student learning and advocacy program at the Thomas Merton Center, located in Pittsburgh, PA. The program engaged over 100 student interns from universities and community colleges located across the country. Students connected with the center as a result of their involvement in their colleges’ service learning and civic engagement programs. Students learned leadership skills that could be applied in their ongoing peace and justice activism. At the workshop, attendees learned how to implement the center’s strategies, while combining student learning outcomes with civic work in the community. Emphasis was placed on creating a values- based framework that links student learning with student passion which manifested in diverse civic engagement opportunities.
