This document discusses whether user experience can be designed. It presents arguments that experience cannot fully be controlled but can be influenced and shaped through iterative design and optimization based on metrics and goals. User experience design aims to plan factors that will guide most users' behavioral and emotional reactions in a particular way, rather than trying to control all outcomes. The results of design are a hypothesis, not something fixed, and should be measured and improved through testing.

Basics in User Experience Design, Information Architecture & UsabilitySebastian Waters
Presentation for my talk about the "Basics in User Experience Design, Information Architecture & Usability" at General Assembly Berlin, January 9th, 2013
Effective UI’s Tony Hillerson and Juan Sanchez presented “Designing an App: From Idea to Market” at Android Open in October 2011. They cover best practices for desiging an Android app that offers a good user experience.
Opening keynote presentation from the UX Indonesia 2014 conference.
In this talk I take a 50-foot view of the phrase “User Experience” and dissect what it really means to be user-centred. We then examine some of the techniques, philosophies and skills used by the best designers, and explore how you can apply them to our own designs—and to your career.
This was a presentation done for a basics of UI/UX for basecode.

Content-first UX Design: What video games teach us about UXSteph Hay
Great UX design influences one video game becoming a cultural icon while another lands in the $5 bin at GameStop. So what cues can we take from these popular games—and from this technology-driven industry that so closely parallels our own?
Steph is going to teach us about two: Content-first UX Design and Contextual Learning.
See popular video games whose character stories form the backbone of design, and whose flow teaches players to use the game while they’re playing it.
Then hear how Steph translated these two concepts to her work with Ben & Jerry’s, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and FastCustomer.com—which resulted in fewer design iterations, more cohesive content, and higher levels of user engagement.

Tapworthy: Designing iPhone Interfaces for Delight and UsabilityJosh Clark
This SXSW presentation covers: the elusive ingredients of "tapworthy" apps; why building iPhone apps is like designing a physical gadget; usability gotchas on handheld devices; and how the best iPhone designers turn constraints — limited screen space and fleeting user attention — into advantages for their apps. Along the way, Josh shares behind-the-scenes glimpses into the design process of popular apps including Facebook, Twitterrific, USA Today, Things, and others.
The presentation is by designer, developer, and author Josh Clark, previewing ideas from his upcoming book, "Tap Happy: Designing Great iPhone Apps" from O'Reilly Media.

Design Thinking Dallas by Chris BernardChris Bernard

What are user experiences and how can we design them optimally? Why does UX matter and how does it interface with software development? And what does a unified design approach mean for front-end development at Semantico?
What makes UX so interestingly vast and a debatable topic for those who have narrow perspective on this or are just beginning to explore the realms? Examples and simple graphs showing the important aspects to consider while designing and misconceptions about UX. Methodologies in a nutshell to help understand the design process.

Understanding the User Centred Design process and how UX is an integral part of every piece of digital work that is produced.

User Experience Design: The Past, The Present, The FutureCharbel Zeaiter
In our mostly true exploration of the history of UX and the current space we're in, we look to how UX Designers will be called upon in the future to create experiences that matter.
Breaking down what UX means and just how it's measured, what is UX Debt, and how to iteratively improve UX in a way that Product People will find both insightful and relevant
UX principles at Marketing Week Live London 2014Cyber-Duck
User Experience (UX) principles for marketing team as presented by Danny Bluestone at Marketing Week Live 2014 in London. The presentation touches on the importance of UX and how it has to be engrained into an organisation's culture as opposed to being a bolt-on.
This is the slidedeck I used for my talk about UX for the 2016 cohort of Venture for Canada at Queen's University, Kingston, ON. In it, I go over what I've learned about UX over the past 3 years, including a brief history of UX, a look at the design landscape today, and a glimpse into what we can expect in the future. I followed this talk up with a quick hands-on workshop on UX design.

8. COUPLE OF ANSWERS...
• Why User Experience Cannot Be Designed
• Can Experience be Designed?
• “Can experience be designed?” Yes. No. Wait, yes. But
• Thoughts on “Can Experience be Designed?”
• Why the User Experience Can or Cannot be
Designed?

11. Antagonists of User Experience
Design argue that designers can’t
design experience, because they
cannot control all the factors that
influence experience.

If I design a chair and
one person uses it as
a table, does my
design fail? No! Maybe
this one particular
person doesn’t have
better table at home,
or just loves to use
chairs as tables.

14. I CAN’T CONTROL IT
In the world of scientific research we call such people „deviants”. Deviants
don’t count when it comes to assessment of certain research hypothesis.

17. User Experience Design is all about planning
factors that should be able to shape behavioral and

User Experience Design is not about control.

20. Desired behavioral and emotional reaction
should be characterized by measurable metrics.
Metrics form goals. Design that is unable to
achieve goals, equals design that doesn’t shape
an experience in a planned way, equals design
that requires optimization.
21. Do we plan to get
100% conversion rate?
No. Why? Because it
would be extremely
stupid. We can’t
control all the factors
and influence every
person.

22. We, User Experience Designers, care for
overall users’ experience, because we
are metrics and goals driven. We care for
specific, planned by us, behavioral and
emotional reaction.
