This document proposes a plan to implement wireless printing for 8th grade social studies students. It argues that allowing students to print wirelessly will increase engagement by giving them access to sources, improve classroom management by keeping students in class, and save instructional time by eliminating trips to the library. The district already provides laptops to all 3rd to 12th grade students and has expanded Wi-Fi access points in the community. Having individual devices allows for individual, group, and team-based work and assessments. Several free apps are recommended to support social studies standards on civics, geography, presidents, and other topics.

Implementing Wireless Printing for 8th Grade Social Studies

Platform: 4. Can Students Print Wirelessly from Multiple Platforms?
I have chosen platform four because of the lack of access for printing. My school district
is one to one, but one downfall is the lack of printing from students. Students should have access
to printing because they can print the sources they need, increase class time, and great for
managing behavior.
Students are engaged by accessing the work they have discovered. Many times in the
classroom, students lose motivation to do their work if they have to get up and walk all the way
to the library to print off one document. By having access to a printer, students can continue
working on the assignment the teacher has provided, rather than wandering in the hallways
during the whole class period.
2. Also, letting students have access to a printer can increase class time by keeping students
in the classroom. Currently, if students have to print a document they need to walk to the library,
which is in front of the school. Plus, since these are young teens, they will certainly take ample
time coming back from the library to say hi to their peers in the hallways, or in other classrooms.
Lastly, this helps the teacher manage his/her students. How many times have teachers
received a phone call from a librarian about a student misbehaving, and losing their privilege
going by them self again? This can be frustrating for teachers, especially if a student needs to use
the printer for an important assignment.
Accommodations: Currently in my school district, every student from third to twelfth grade is
given a laptop. If a student breaks, or loses their laptop they are given a loaner until their laptop
is fixed or returned. Also, since my school is a Title One school, the school district has worked
with the community on expanding Wi-Fi to the community in order to provide access for student
from low economic backgrounds. Wi-Fi is now accessible at the local community center,
recreational park, and certain restaurants.
Grouping: The benefit of having one to one devices is the convenience for students to work
individually, groups, or teams. Individually, students can take formal assessments in order to
prepare them for Georgia Milestones, which is done on laptops. Students can work in groups for
projects, and is done easier with their own laptop. By having their own laptop, accountability is
increased for each person within the project, which creates a higher level of engagement from
students who would not usually participate in a whole class setting. Lastly, students can play
review games within teams. Review games such as Kahoot, or Quizizz provide features for
students to play in teams through their laptop.
3. Apps:
1. Constitution- This application is a great way to scaffold or reteach standard SS8G1-5,
which are the government standards for 8th grade social studies.
2. Declaration of Independence- This application provides biographies of the signers of
the Declaration of Independence, which is part of the standards.
3. History: Maps of World- This application is great introductory lesson for learning
Georgia’s geography.
4. Fact Book- This application provides information on countries geography, population,
government, and military. This is a great activity for students to practice their compare
and contrasting skills.
5. Google Earth- A great way to provide virtual field trips, especially if school has a high
poverty rate.
6. iAmerica- Provides information on every U.S. president, especially when students need
to know which president was part of which war, and signed document.
*All of the listed applications are free, which will benefit all of my students.
