Our school's BYOT plan allows students to bring their own technology devices to class. Windows and Surface devices are most appropriate as the school provides Microsoft365 accounts for students and staff. While BYOT is encouraged, accommodations are made for students without devices, including six classroom laptops, a portable cart with 30 laptops, and an iPad cart with 30 devices and assessment locking features. Students work individually on online practice through USATestPrep for homework and feedback, but work in pairs for review games like Kahoot. 9th Grade Coordinate Algebra

What Platform Do We Use? With the growing need for technology in today’s culture, many
companies are producing new and innovative technology. In our classroom, the most appropriate
platform will be Windows or Surface. Our county provides a free Microsoft365 account for
every student and employee. Because Microsoft is a product of Windows, every email account,
document sharing and storing method, and app will be best supported by a Microsoft device.
Accommodations for Students without Devices: Although students are encouraged to bring
their devices to school, it is our promise that no device-less student will be left out of instruction.
For this reason, there are several accommodations in place for students without devices. First,
my classroom is equipped with six Microsoft laptops. I am fortunate to have six laptops that exist
for the sole purpose of providing technology for students in my classroom alone. While other
devices in the school are shared between hallways and departments, these six laptops are
specifically for the students in my room. Second, our hallway has access to portable cart with a
class set of laptops. This cart is beneficial because it provides an entire class set and includes a
wireless printer that is connected to every laptop in the cart. Finally, the math department has a
portable cart with 30 ipad minis. This cart is located next door to my classroom and provides
quick and easy access to several instructional apps. The ipads have a unique locking feature that
allows students to take assessments without being able to change screens or navigate the internet.
All of these devices are easily accessible for any student who requires the use of technology in
the classroom.
Grouping Students with Devices: The way students are grouped when we used technology in
the classroom depends on the activity. In Coordinate Algebra, homework is assigned through the
tool USATestPrep. On this website, we are able to assign practice problems that are linked
directly to the standards that we cover in class. This provides an opportunity for students to
practice math problems and receive immediate feedback. This online practice also prepares our
students for the End of Course Test that is also administered on the computer. For all
USATestPrep assignments, students are asked to work individually so that we can see feedback
for each student and track individual growth. All forms of review are typically done in pairs.
When we use review games such as Kahoot, students are encouraged to use the devices with a
partner. This type of partner practice allows students to rely on a peer to help answer questions
they may not know.
