The Burke View Court Sewer Emergency project addresses a broken 16-inch sanitary asbestos cement sewer pipe

Project Overview:
• Approximately 340-feet of 16-inch asbestos cement sewer pipe was replaced with PVC and encased with 32-inch
steel pipe in the segment that crosses under the stream.
• A new manhole was installed at the upstream location to allow bypass pumping of the existing manhole so the
new line segment could be completed.
• Rip rap bank stabilization was installed at the location of the newly installed line to protect the pipe from erosion.

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services conducted an emergency repair project at Graham Park Plaza to replace approximately 60 feet of broken 8-inch wastewater sewer pipe and retrieve a CCTV camera that was stuck in the pipe during routine maintenance. The project involved communicating with business owners, excavating to retrieve the camera, removing the broken pipe and installing new PVC pipe and laterals, and restoring the work site. The project was completed on May 14, 2021.

Historic Jail Roof Replacement

Fairfax County

This project consisted of replacement of the North wing roof and repair to the load bearing South wall. Deteriorating structural conditions resulted in visible sagging in the roof, bowing, undulating and cracking of the South wall. With a goal to preserve and reuse to the extent possible, the project consisted of removing the roof, reconstructing the south wall with salvaged bricks and matching mortar, and replacing/reusing rafters and slate roof tiles. The historic ornamental ridge crest was stripped of lead paint, repaired, repainted, and re-mounted.

Crisis Care Facility

The project consists primarily of the interior renovation and reconfiguration of an existing one story institutional residential care facility with minor site improvements. The building is approximately 9,500 square feet (SF) previously housing a Boys Probation House. The renovation will provide for a Crisis Care Program providing adult crisis stabilization treatment services through the Fairfax County Community Services Board (CSB). The key elements of the overall project scope include: Interior renovation with selective demolition and floor plan changes Interior finish upgrades New toilet rooms and existing bathroom ADA update Building system upgrades for MEP, fire protection and security Roofing and dormer improvements Parking lot re-striping, new fencing and concrete pads

Little Hunting Creek Pump Station Rehabilitation

This project included rehabilitation of the 21 MGD Little Hunting Creek Pump Station (LHCPS). Located at 8600 Stockton Parkway, Alexandria, Virginia, this pump station is the third largest pump station in the Fairfax County System. LHCPS is constructed on a 10-acre parcel that was previously utilized as the Little Hunting Creek Sewer Treatment Plant 44B. LHCPS was constructed and placed into service in 1983. Flow from LHCPS is pumped through a 30-inch force main across Little Hunting Creek to a receiving structure approximately 4,500 feet away on Surrey Court. This project was substantially complete on June 25, 2021.

Accotink Creek at Wakefield Park Stream Restoration Project

Accotink Creek at Wakefield Park Stream Restoration project was substantially completed on November 23, 2021. This project consists of restoring, enhancing, and stabilizing of approximately 4,900 linear feet of stream channel through the installation of four Newbury Riffles within the main channel of Accotink Creek and one Newbury Riffle within a side channel to provide aquatic benefits, grade control, improve water quality and prevent further erosion.

Little Hunting Creek Sewer Replacement Community Meeting: 12-11-2017

Peppercorn Drive Outfall Restoration

Old Colchester Road Stream Stabilization Project January 2021

This project stabilized an eroding stream along Old Colchester Road near the Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant in Fairfax County, Virginia. The erosion undermined an existing fence and created a security concern. Crews stabilized approximately 255 linear feet of the stream channel using layers of rip rap and reinforced soil mix. They also removed the undermined fence and reinstalled it to restore the secure perimeter. The emergency project was substantially completed in December 2020.

Fort Hunt Road Emergency Gravity Sewer Project

The Fort Hunt Road Service Road sewer services 21 homes and was constructed as an 8-inch diameter clay pipe. The Wastewater Collection Division inspected the pipe and identified a break that appeared to have been caused by a utility cross bore from a utility pole which was visible on the pipe inspection video. The Wastewater Design and Construction Division kicked off an expedited design and construction project to address this damaged sewer pipe. The project included the installation of roughly 350-feet of 8-inch diameter gravity sewer, 4 new manholes, 2 sewer reconnections, and abandonment-in-place of roughly 350-feet of old 8-inch diameter clay pipe. This project was substantially complete on June 4, 2021.

The Belle View Pump Station Rehabilitation project involved upgrading an existing sanitary sewer pump station in Fairfax County, VA to ensure it remains operational for the next 30 years. Work included replacing pumping equipment and valves based on a new 30-year flow projection, adding an emergency bypass system, rehabilitating the facade and installing a new roof, upgrading electrical and HVAC equipment, landscaping, and a new odor control system. The work on this project included investigation and repair to an 8-inch sewer line in Waterway Drive which had been previously lined with a plastic liner system. The project location was in Waterway Drive from Cavalier Court to the vicinity of Half Moon Circle. The project involved setting up a bypass system to remove sewage from the line so the pipe could be properly cleaned and inspected. Following this process, it was determined the plastic liner was causing capacity issues. It was determined that the liner could be repaired using internal methods and no excavation was needed. In addition, the five manholes associated with the segments of pipe in the project area were also rehabilitated. This project was substantially complete on June 25, 2021.

The Golden Woods Pond Retrofit project in Fairfax County, Virginia involved upgrading an existing stormwater management pond to reduce pollution and improve water quality. The project included removing a concrete ditch, constructing stone pools and a bioswale, upgrading the pond and control structure, replacing a culvert, and restoring the surrounding area. The project was completed on time and on budget in August 2016. It is estimated to reduce nitrogen, phosphorus and suspended solids pollution in the nearby Pond Branch Watershed by over 129 pounds, 10 pounds, and 7,500 pounds respectively each year.

The Green Hill Estates Sewer Emergency project addressed a broken 8-inch sewer pipe and the erosion of the adjacent stream. The emergency was discovered during routine sewer cleaning and inspection. A break, along with several other defects, were noted in the sewer. In addition, the creek had eroded and had partially exposed the pipe. As digital technology becomes more deeply embedded in power systems, protecting the communication networks of Smart Grids (SG) has emerged as a critical concern. Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3) represents a multi-tiered application layer protocol extensively utilized in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)-based smart grids to facilitate real-time data gathering and control functionalities. Robust Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are necessary for early threat detection and mitigation because of the interconnection of these networks, which makes them vulnerable to a variety of cyberattacks. To solve this issue, this paper develops a hybrid Deep Learning (DL) model specifically designed for intrusion detection in smart grids. The proposed approach is a combination of the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and the Long-Short-Term Memory algorithms (LSTM). We employed a recent intrusion detection dataset (DNP3), which focuses on unauthorized commands and Denial of Service (DoS) cyberattacks, to train and test our model. The results of our experiments show that our CNN-LSTM method is much better at finding smart grid intrusions than other deep learning algorithms used for classification. In addition, our proposed approach improves accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, achieving a high detection accuracy rate of 99.50%.

Robot manipulators have become important equipment in production lines, medical fields, and transportation. Improving the quality of trajectory tracking for robot hands is always an attractive topic in the research community. This is a challenging problem because robot manipulators are complex nonlinear systems and are often subject to fluctuations in loads and external disturbances. This article proposes an adaptive synchronous sliding control scheme to improve trajectory tracking performance for a robot manipulator. The proposed controller ensures that the positions of the joints track the desired trajectory, synchronize the errors, and significantly reduces chattering. First, the synchronous tracking errors and synchronous sliding surfaces are presented. Second, the synchronous tracking error dynamics are determined. Third, a robust adaptive control law is designed,the unknown components of the model are estimated online by the neural network, and the parameters of the switching elements are selected by fuzzy logic. The built algorithm ensures that the tracking and approximation errors are ultimately uniformly bounded (UUB). Finally, the effectiveness of the constructed algorithm is demonstrated through simulation and experimental results. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed controller is effective with small synchronous tracking errors, and the chattering phenomenon is significantly reduced.

This paper describes a speed control device for generating electrical energy on an electricity network based on the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) used for wind power conversion systems. At first, a double-fed induction generator model was constructed. A control law is formulated to govern the flow of energy between the stator of a DFIG and the energy network using three types of controllers: proportional integral (PI), sliding mode controller (SMC) and second order sliding mode controller (SOSMC). Their different results in terms of power reference tracking, reaction to unexpected speed fluctuations, sensitivity to perturbations, and resilience against machine parameter alterations are compared. MATLAB/Simulink was used to conduct the simulations for the preceding study. Multiple simulations have shown very satisfying results, and the investigations demonstrate the efficacy and power-enhancing capabilities of the suggested control system.

Project Details Burke View Court Emergency Sewer Repair Capital Facilities/Wastewater Design and Construction Division/Collections Branch Description: The Burke View Court Sewer Emergency project addresses a broken 16-inch sanitary asbestos cement sewer pipe crossing a stream tributary to Pohick Creek. The break was found when Wastewater Collection Division investigated a report of a sanitary sewer overflow. It was determined that the line had been broken during a private dredging operation in the forebay of a pond. The pipe that was broken was under the stream and did not have casement around the pipe. The broken pipe segment was replaced and upgraded with a steel casing pipe to mitigate future damage. The project was substantially completed February 2, 2021. Project Overview: • Approximately 340-feet of 16-inch asbestos cement sewer pipe was replaced with PVC and encased with 32-inch steel pipe in the segment that crosses under the stream. • A new manhole was installed at the upstream location to allow bypass pumping of the existing manhole so the new line segment could be completed. • Rip rap bank stabilization was installed at the location of the newly installed line to protect the pipe from erosion.
