Hunter Mill Road and Sunset Hills Road StudyFairfax County
Hunter Mill Road and Sunset Hills Road Study
Kick Off Meeting Dec. 8, 2014
There is recurring congestion Hunter Mill Road from Sunrise Valley Drive to the Colvin Run Bridge during the morning and evening peak hours. The congestion is heavily concentrated at the intersections of Sunset Hills Road and the west bound Dulles Toll Road ramps at Hunter Mill Road. These two intersections are closely spaced and constrained by the existing bridge. The number of vehicles using Hunter Mill Road is forecasted to increase in the future. The opening of the Wiehle Avenue-Reston East Metrorail station in 2014, new development anticipated in Reston, and an increase in background traffic associated with development elsewhere in the region are likely to increase vehicular traffic in this area. This study will look at alternatives to mitigate the existing conditions and future conditions to ensure traffic can move efficiently through the intersections.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Burke Road Corridor
Speed Study
Vanessa Holt, FCDOT Traffic Engineering
Department of Transportation
5. County of Fairfax, Virginia
Study Purpose and Scope
• Reviewed speeding and
safety concerns along the
Burke Road corridor
• Collected 48-hour speed
and peak hour traffic
volume data in October
2017
• Conducted traffic signal
and stop sign warrants
• Investigated other potential
tools to address
community concerns
Department of Transportation
6. County of Fairfax, Virginia
Study Results
• Posted Speed = 35 mph
• Speed limits are based on an engineering study that
considers factors that affect the safe and
appropriate speed
– Free-flowing speed of vehicles on the roadway is a
primary consideration
– Many people assume that reducing a speed limit will
cause speeding motorists to slow down, but studies
have shown that motorists tend to drive at the speed
they perceive appropriate for the conditions of the
roadway, rather than the posted speed limit
Department of Transportation
7. County of Fairfax, Virginia
Study Results
• Average Observed Speeds
– Northbound Burke Road = 35 mph
– Southbound Burke Road = 37 mph
• 85th Percentile Observed Speeds
– Northbound Burke Road = 39 mph
– Southbound Burke Road = 42 mph
Department of Transportation
8. County of Fairfax, Virginia
Study Results
• Traffic Signal and Stop Sign Warrants
– Federal guidelines that establish minimum conditions under
which signal or stop sign installation should be considered
– Criteria considered include traffic volumes, crash frequency
– Warrants are only the first step in determining appropriate
intersection control. Further engineering study helps to
determine measures appropriate for a particular location.
• Burke Road intersections at Old Burke Lake Road, Aplomado Drive,
and Ridge Ford Drive did not meet any applicable signal or multi-
way stop warrants, due to low traffic volumes and low crash
frequency
Department of Transportation
9. County of Fairfax, Virginia
Next Steps
• Mini roundabouts can be
used in place of stop-
controlled or signalized
intersections to help
improve safety problems,
and to slow vehicular
speeds on the
approaches
Department of Transportation
10. County of Fairfax, Virginia
Next Steps
• Study feasibility of a mini
roundabout at Burke Road
and Aplomado Drive
– Mini roundabout, combined with
grass median on Burke Road
approaches, may reduce speeds
on this segment of the corridor
– Considerations for direct
residential access on Burke
Road
– Roundabout study to be added
to FCDOT list of unfunded
projects

• Improvements will primarily occur within the parcel owned by Fairfax County
• The parking lot expansion will likely require a grading agreement and
temporary construction easement from the parcel owned by Norfolk Southern
Railway
• Improvement to the outfall drainage on the east side of Burke Road may
require an easement from Burke Station Citizens Association, Inc.

Department of Transportation
• No major impact on existing day-to-day use of VRE. Construction
could be limited to weekends when VRE is not operating.
• Maintenance of traffic will be required for the expansion of the
existing parking lot as well as for grading and installation of curb
and gutter along Burke Road
• Dominion Virginia Power generally requires 25 feet clear of
improvements. A retaining wall will most likely to be required to
provide a 25-foot radius around the tower.
• There are three utility poles which may require relocation, due to
the proximity to the proposed parking expansion.
