2. What we did…
On the 27th of October, me and my classmates took a trip
down to the British film institute on the Southbank in
London for an enterprise looking into the ins and outs of
making a music video. For the first part of the day we
looked at the history of the music video ranging all the
way back to the 1940’s when a range of colours was used
as a music video all the way through to nowadays. The
most notable eras for music videos was apparent in the
60’s when bands such as the Beatles became icons for the
nation and there was a larger desire for the icons
themselves. This itself highlights how bands or singers
became more of a brand itself and how the music videos
have been used as a way to advertise the brand that the
artists represent.

4. What I have learnt from this…
Looking at the history of the music video gave me
insight to how the development of music has
changed along with the style. We could say that the
type of song changes the style of video and we can
see how the development of new editing skills has
been implemented into the way in which we make
a music video and the style it takes on. I also believe
that through looking at how music videos have
been presented we can see the way the artist
becomes much more involved with an image and
we can see how this image is being used to try and
advertise the artist.

5. 2nd Part…
In the second part of the day we got a real insight
into the industry and got to have a Q & A time with
a music video director that has made videos for
many artists. We were also given a song and had to
pitch an idea to her about Imelda Hills song ‘its
good to be alive’. Our idea itself was to have a social
experiment and see how people would react in a
room with the song on in the background and film
it to make a music video. The director then went on
to show her own version of the music video, which
took on a much different form to our idea as it was
in the style of an old school horror.

6. My overall experience…
Speaking with the Director really gave me an insight into her
industry and the thought process behind her ideas. We got to
see how she constructed each of her videos and how she used
a portfolio before hand to plan out the video using google
images to make a sequence plan. This also showed the scenes
that she constructed and gave an order to the sequence she
was making similar to the storyboards that we were making.
She also showed us the studio layout which is important for
planning where each shot is going to take place and the
appropriate set that is going to be swapped and set up with
each coming usage. We also watched a few of her home made
videos and that helped highlight some of the key features that
made her music videos stand out.
