Brigada Skwela is a nationwide voluntary effort in the Philippines where teachers, parents, students, and community members conduct minor repairs and cleanups at schools before the start of the school year. This event began in 2003 as part of the Department of Education's back to school program and encourages volunteers to donate their time and materials like paint and lumber. Through donations from local businesses, over 12,000 schools benefited in 2003 with savings of 392 million pesos for maintenance expenses. By 2005, over 26,000 schools participated, saving over 1 billion pesos for school upkeep.

Volunteerism, Extension, and Community Outreach in SBM
I. Rationale
The report is written to give clear, concise, and reflective information about volunteerism, extension, and community outreach that may be utilized by the teachers in their respective schools under the Department of Education.
Instruction to the Users
This report will have three components which are volunteerism, extension, and community outreach. Definitions along with brief explanation, importance, and examples will be given for each of the components.
II. Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, the teachers will be able to:
a. Know the difference between volunteerism, extension, and community outreach.
b. Appreciate the importance of these programs to schools.
c. Make a proposal about these programs that is unique and effective.
III. Content
A. Preparatory Activities
Since these programs are aligned and connected to SBM, let’s revisit the definition of SBM.
“What is SBM?” SBM refers to a process where school leaders, teachers, parents, and community members work together to ensure that schools meet the educational needs of their students.
Volunteerism, extension, and community outreach are three different concepts in school-based management that have distinct characteristics and objectives. These activities bring the school closer to the community, strengthening relationships and building trust among stakeholders. As such, they are effective strategies for improving student outcomes and promoting the well-being of the school community.
“What is the importance of this topic to SBM?” The importance of this topic to SBM are the following: First, they promote a collaborative and inclusive approach to education, which is essential for the development of successful students. Second, schools can ultimately achieve their goals of academic excellence and social development for students by involving different stakeholders in the educational process and fostering a supportive environment.
B. Developmental Activities
VOLUNTEERISM IN SBM
“What is volunteerism in SBM?” Volunteerism refers to the practice of offering one's services or time for the betterment of society without a financial reward. It includes activities such as mentoring students, participating in extracurricular activities, assisting teachers, and supporting school fundraising events.
Volunteerism is a key component of school-based management. Through volunteering, parents, community members, and other stakeholders can actively participate in the school's activities and contribute to the school's success. Volunteers bring a wide range of skills, expertise, and experience that can assist in various school-based projects, from organizing school events to providing academic support to students.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. BRIGADA SKWELA
Also known as the Bayanihan Para sa Paaralan.
Is a nationwide voluntary effort of
teachers,parents,students,community members, and other
organizations to do minor repairs and clean-ups on their
schools in preparation for the start of the school year.
This event started in 2003 as part of the Oplan Balik Skwela
Program and national maintenance Week of the Department
of Education (DepED). It encourage volunteers give out their
time,effort,and even donate materials such as
paint,cement,lumber and other lumber and other materials,
which could be used for minor repairs and building.
Donations from local corporations and businesses are given
in kind.
3. CONTENT
ACTIVITIES
Minor repairs are usually done before the opening of
the classes. Maintenance work such as the repainting of the
roof and exterior walls, repair of leaking water pipes, ceiling
boards, broken furniture and windows, cleaning of toilets,
and gardening are done by volunteers with the help of
donations is kind from non-government organizations and
corporations.
As early as February, school heads recruit volunteers
who would participate in the brigade,by March,they would
approach local business for donations,then orgamize work
groups by April. It is usally held two weeks prior to every
year’s opening classes.
4. BENEFITS
Aside from promoting the spirit of volunteerism ,since
its lunch public schools have benefited in terms of their
community maintenance and operating Expenses (MOOE).
► 2003: 12,000 public schools (30% of all schools)
392 million of community MOOE
► 2004: 16,000 schools (38% of all schools.)
717.1 million community MOOE.
► 2005: 26,000 schools (62% of all schools)
Over 1 billion community MOOE
This brigade has save the government the amount of 153.16
million in donations, services, and volunteer hours and in
2008,it save the government about 2.9 billion.
