An attempt was made on Soviet leader Brezhnev's life by an unknown assailant, with the bullet hitting Brezhnev's forehead and killing the driver. Brezhnev came to believe in his own heroic role in World War II despite the need for few jokes about his mediocrity. Upon becoming leader, Brezhnev promoted an anti-reformist stance compared to Khrushchev's reformism. The communist system stagnated under Brezhnev as the party apparatus took on responsibilities from high officials, and the regime outwardly appeared active while internally becoming passive as it headed towards inevitable collapse.
