This study evaluated the effects of instructor engagement with an online course management system (CMS) on student usage of the CMS and academic performance. Participants were undergraduate students enrolled in two intact courses taught by the same instructor during different academic terms. Both courses used the CMS for course materials, but the instructor more actively participated in the online discussion forums and posted lecture notes in the high-support course. Google analytics page views were compared between the courses. While no significant correlation existed between CMS use and academic performance in the low-support course, CMS use in the high-support course demonstrated a positive correlation with final grades. Overall, when the instructor actively used the CMS features, student use related to course grades.
