28. Dear Audience: If you have an Internet connected device,
please go to this website.

I will give you more directions soon!
29. Within 5 years, allowing
students to
“Bring Their Own Device”
will be common!
I want to begin by saying thank you very much for this opportunity to talk with you all. I look out at the audience and I think about myself 17 years ago. I think a lot about the excitement and trepidation that is intermingled. I think about student teaching and ramen noodles! \n\nI have to say, that you are my favorite group of people to talk with! You are the foundation of change in our profession!\n\nAdditionally, I have to start by saying that many of my former teachers are probably flabbergasted right now! I would love to see there face when someone tells them that I am giving keynote addresses at education conferences! \n\nSpeaking of keynote addresses, whenever I attend education conferences, I often feel like I am on this old game show! Have you seen this?\n
\nYou just don’t know what the keynote speaker or the rest of the presenters are going to give you. Is it going to be a whammy?\n
Well, I love to tell stories. My wife will be the first to tell you that I share way too much. I am sure she is right!. Here is our setup for the story. \n
Stories of going into teaching and getting shot down.\n\n1. Mediocre Student\n2. Father said I wouldn’t make any money so it was a waste of his money. Refused to pay for college.\n3. Student Teaching - Told me to think about a new career choice.\n4. First day at new teacher meetings, I was told to start with the previous teacher’s overhead transparencies.\n5. First year I put my kids grades online, colleague on the 7th grade team told me I couldn’t because she would be expected to do that now.\n

Currently, I am the Director of Technology for Downers Grove District #58. I have been in this job all of two days!\n
I am the former “Technology Coordinator / Facilitator” of Kenilworth District #38. \nWe had 97% meeting or exceeding state standards. \nWe have kids blogging from 3rd to 8th grade.\nWe have student email, Google accounts for all 3rd to 8th grade.\nWe have been very innovative in so many ways and I am really proud of the work that we did there. \nI am leaving the legacy of a BYOD device program for 8th grade and a 1-1 iPod program for 3rd graders.\n
The newest project I have helped launch is EdReach.us which is an Education Media Network. We want you to go to our network and pick your channel for learning. We want to be the Huffington Post, Twit Network, Tech Learning Magazine, and Tech Facilitators for the World!\n\nWe have seven podcasts with three additional in the works. \nWe have 20 amazing contributors who are some of the best in the field!\n\nOne of our main focuses is “New Teachers”. Come learn with us ... \n
I founded the I Education Apps Review website with the understanding that this is a site for teachers by teachers. \nWe have almost a 1000 members in the NING and many teacher reviewers!\n
I am the Illinois Conference chair.\n
I helped expand the Students in Technology Conference into two additional sites in Illinois. We have almost 2000 students 3rd through 12 who participate in this conference every year now. \n
Additionally, I am a Google Certified Teacher and an Apple Distinguished Educator. \nWhat do I equate a lot of my success to? I avoided the whammies! \n
\n\n
\n
I think this game show is actually a great metaphor for school in general!\nKids walk into their homerooms to see who is in their class. No Whammies!\nStudents check their schedule to see what teachers they have. No Whammies!\nTeachers check their class rosters to see what students they have. No Whammies!\nGo to a conference ... Hope for good sessions. No Whammies!\n\nI can sit here and show you some cool Tech Ed stuff .. here are some examples!\n

think about what your school WON’T have to buy by purchasing these devices...or maybe having your kids bring the devices?\n

This past year, I have seen record numbers of applicants for jobs in teaching. What are you going to do to stand out? Are you going to look better because you know of a few gadgets and gizmos? \n
\n
Stop getting whammies! Find a pattern ... break the code ... \n\n
That is exactly what happened on this game show. Michael beat the system ... \n
... He didn’t end up with a happy life as the story turns very badly, but he did become famous for busting the whammy! ... \n
Can we find our own pattern? What tools will we need in our tool belt to build our own pattern?\n
