Sample: ‘Making Meaning: Oral Communication & Interactive Reading & Writing Theme: Local Tragic Events Instructional Aims • Connecting background knowledge with new information • Connecting learner experience to reading and writing • Building comprehension strategies (predicting from context) Activity • Students watch video clips / look at posters • Small group discussions (polls/votes?) • Student watch video clips (no sound) and predict language used

Sample: ‘Making Meaning: Oral Communication & Interactive Reading & Writing Theme: Local Tragic Events Instructional Aims • Developing effective reading strategies • Strengthening communication skills and interaction strategies • Linking everyday events with problem solving and literacy Activity • Students can look at pictures and build a story of tragic event • Students discuss verbal and non-verbal interaction using prepared video clips • Students role play (perhaps emergency & rescue) and fill in forms

Sample: ‘Making Meaning: Oral Communication & Interactive Reading & Writing Theme: Local Tragic Events Instructional Aims • Learner experience to develop graphic literacy • Linking problem solving and communication skills • Creating meaning through writing and role playing • Building background knowledge Activity • Students interview each other to find out who has similar experiences • Students watch critical video and decide how problem could be handled choosing options • Students create their own videos in class (extending role playing) • Guest speaker invited

Oral Communication – 15 mins Theme: Local tragic events (developing the learning story) Instructional aim: Connecting learner experience to reading and writing • What activity would lead to the aim? • What technology/digital medium would you use? • How will you measure whether the aim has been achieved?
