Rhythm and Blues
R&B also known as rhythm & Blues originated in the early 1940’s from
urban African Americans. This genre consist of a combination of rock ,
jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat. During 1995 RNB featured
drum machine-backed rhythms and a saxophone-laced beat for a jazz feel
whereas now artist incorporate electronic , machine made sounds and
instruments. Most of these song lyrics base around the topics of love ,
relationships, aspirations and freedom.
Modern RnB artist include The Weeknd , John Legend , Frank ocean ,
Drake and many more.
Branding and Marketing
Branding and marketing is an important part to an artist and their music , in
order to attract their targeted audience.
Branding defines the artist and defines what their target market think they
are. Incorporating elements of your personality, beliefs or attitudes is always a
way to create a unique brand for yourself. Artist can do this through a
remarkable logo, Fashion statement, Vinyl release, website layout or a cool
merchandise.
Marketing is simply to reach the artists target audience with advertising,
promotions and public relations.
The Weeknd- Abel Tesfaye
Social media is the most important technique of marketing as it’s the easiest
strategy to promote globally.
Through out his career he has remained anonymous until recently. Using mystery
marketing all around social media gained him success both in his music and as an
artist. Abel quotes "We live in an era when everything is so excessive, I think it's
refreshing for everybody to be like, 'Who the f*** is this guy?'"
Since then , Tesfaye has used social media as a major platform to engage his fan
base of ‘XO’. He has used twitter to post several lyrics from his upcoming songs as
well as Facebook and Instagram to promote his recent album ‘STARBOY’.
Advertising
Abel continues to use traditional marketing techniques alongside new media such
as advertising. He uses advertising as an advantage to promote his song and gain
recognition. His song ‘High for this’ was featured in a Hugo Boss TV commercial.

Branding- logo
Abel has his own slogan to symbolize his
fans as well as a part of him. This logo
conveys a meaning of ‘hugs and kisses’
towards his fans. Some also say that this
logo addresses his love for drugs as the
letters ‘XO’ stand for Ecstasy and Oxycontin.
Selling merchandises of your own is a particular
promotion strategy all music artists use. This will
further promote the artist as well as their music.
Abel has his own merchandise, all Featured with
his signature ‘XO’. Using this slogan on his
merchandises will make fans eager to buy it as its
something that clearly represents ‘The Weeknd ’
Chosen Artist – Nathan Morgan
Our chosen artist is an Independent artist named Nathan Morgan. He
promotes his music through his YouTube account ‘NaMo official’’. This way
many people can easily notice him and access his music, as YouTube is a major
platform used by everyone.
Now that Snapchat is extremely popular and used by various different
demographics, Nathan has used this as an opportunity to promote his music
through videos and images on Snapchat. He has also used Instagram to post
screenshots of his YouTube videos, to gain more recognition.
Branding-Logo
This is Nathan Morgons stage name ‘NAMO’ representing the first
two lessons of his name and surname. It’s a graphic mark to represent
his music and him as an artist. This makes him unique and stand out
from the rest.
